20080127 Throwing Knives

Uncle Bill 18:26, 27 January 2008 (UTC)

Suggestion type
weapon

Suggestion scope
A new way to use an old weapon

Suggestion description
Summary

Players with the Knife Combat skill now have the option to throw knives at their opponents. This attack, if sucessful, would do double damage (4 HP instead of 2) but the knife would be lost. The hit rate and search rates for knives would be unaffected. Thrown knives would ignore flak jackets, just like they do now.

Please note: I am not adding a new weapon, just a new option for an existing one.

Details and some fuzzy math

Because a thrown knife would do the same amount of damage against a flak jacketed person as a pistol, I think it would be helpful to compare the two. You could technically kill two people a day with throwing knives, but the amount of inventory space it would eat up would probably prevent that from happening very often. Pistols will remain far more efficient, but this attack would make a nice alternative.

Search Rates

Knife - Mall Hardware Stores (3%/7%), Junkyards (1%), Fort Infirmaries (?%), Schools (1%?), Pubs (1%?), Motels (?%), Mall Sports Stores(?%)
Pistol - Mall Gun Stores (4%/6%), Armories (3%), Police Departments (2%), Streets (1%?), Junkyards (1%?)
Clip - Mall Gun Stores (8%/11%), Armories (8%), Police Departments (7%), Junkyards (1%?), Gatehouses (?%)

Combat Stats

Knife (normal) - Average 1 damage per AP = 50 attacks to kill a 50 HP enemy.
Knife (thrown) - Average 2 damage per AP = 25 attacks to kill a 50 HP enemy (and an average of 25 knives lost, with a minimum of 13 to do the job)

One final note... I took the liberty of copying some earlier discussions on throwing knives to the talk page for this suggestion. If you've got any questions, they might have already been addressed. Also, there's a link there to a knife throwing video which will help demonstrate that this suggestion is indeed feasible.

Keep Votes

  1. Keep - Author vote. --Uncle Bill 18:27, 27 January 2008 (UTC)
  2. I want to be a knifecoater - I don't understand how throwing something makes it hurt twice as much, but this would be pretty cool. --  AHLGTG THE END IS NIGH! 18:29, 27 January 2008 (UTC)
  3. Keep - Makes knives more useful--Zach016 18:31, 27 January 2008 (UTC)
  4. Keep - great suggestion(dangit, twice now someone voted while I was submitting my vote)--CorndogheroT-S-Z 18:32, 27 January 2008 (UTC)
  5. Keep - Would make Knife Combat less useless. --Themanwhocares4 18:37, 27 January 2008 (UTC)
  6. Keep - Coz throwing knives are cool. And it is pretty well balanced. If you wanted to kill someone with it, you'd need to carry a huge number of knives which would take up a lot of space and take a long time to find. -- Cheeseman W!RandomTalk 18:38, 27 January 2008 (UTC)
  7. Keep - Ordinarily I would hate this, but I can't help but like it. It's kind of silly and would add some interesting flavor. No one has said Kill yet, so hey... --Vandurn 18:55, 27 January 2008 (UTC)
  8. Keep - Sounds good, but can you explain how throwing a knife would make it do more damage? --Private Mark 19:07, 27 January 2008 (UTC)
RE: I like to think of it this way... you can probably do more damage the traditional way, but it would take you longer. I could take a couple swipes at someone (who is trying to avoid getting hit) and hope I hit something vital, or I could throw the knife and maybe it will hit a little bit harder and before they can block it. --Uncle Bill 19:18, 27 January 2008 (UTC)
  9. Keep - Interesting idea that would allow for a some variation in character development. -- Kormosch 19:12, 27 January 2008 (UTC)
  10. Keep Sounds good, but there should be a description of why throwing damages more. --ChupaCalvin 19:34, 27 January 2008 (UTC)
  11. Keep The whole losing the knife thing is what won me over. A signature move, or a desperate use of your last AP. Does it kill the zed or leave you weaponless the next day? Find out next time on --RosslessnessWant a Location Image? 19:37, 27 January 2008 (UTC)
  12. Keep- I like it.Studoku 20:00, 27 January 2008 (UTC)
  13. Keep- Let's say you stab not to hard to get it out easyly, while you throw with all your might...Or someting like this. :P Anyway it gives the game much flavour and it's balanced. Jim Bim 21:19, 27 January 2008 (GTM)
  14. Not a dupe, as the other required a new skill while this only grants a new option. W 20:35, 27 January 2008 (UTC)
  15. Keep - I like weapon flexibility. --Heretic144 20:53, 27 January 2008 (UTC)
  16. Keep - Why not? doc crook 20:59, 27 January 2008 (UTC)
  17. Keep - Why Not? ----Secruss|Yak|Brahnz!|CGR|PKA|800px-Flag of the United States.svg.png|EMLN|Templates|RRF|RFTM|Crap|WHOZ|Evil3.gif|MU|GN|C2008|Chippy.gif|22:06, 27 January 2008 (UTC)
  18. keep - of course it's a keep. I liked it when it appeared in Talk pages, so why not here. I'll again repeat my argument that the military class players should be trained to use knives this way, and there's a lot of this class in UD,so maybe even some civilians would learn from them.--James beckerson 22:13, 27 January 2008 (UTC)

Kill Votes

  1. Kill - I'm not entirely happy with the fact that 1) the knives do so much damage 2) you appear to be able to throw penknives, cooking knives or scalpels with equal skill and accuracy (I'm guessing that only the very best kife throwers would have a chance of doing this) and 3) The flavour is out for a zombie game. Possible solutions: Drop damage done to 3, have knives found in groups of 3 in, police stations, mall gun stores ect. and have them specificly labeled throwing knives. Even then, I don't know.--SeventythreeTalk 22:16, 27 January 2008 (UTC)

Spam/Dupe Votes

  1. Dupe i don't care about percentage/damage difference. anyway if implemented they are changed. --~~~~ [talk] 20:17, 27 January 2008 (UTC)
  2. Dupe - as Duke. --PdeqTalk* 20:20, 27 January 2008 (UTC)
  3. Dupe - And also insanely overpowered, a vote for keep is a vote for breaking the game. The skill isn't a significant difference.--Karekmaps?! 21:22, 27 January 2008 (UTC)
  4. Dupe - and, from a role-playing perspective, carrying around 30 or so knives is just stupid. Plus, throwing knives are specially balanced - and the knives in this game are generic knives from any old place - a kitchen knife here, a scalpel there. And, why would a thrown knife do more damage? If this wasn't a Dupe, it'd be Spam. --Funt Solo QT Scotland flag.JPG 21:34, 27 January 2008 (UTC)
