improvement.

Suggestion scope

Survivors, Game Stats.

Suggestion description

It is taken as granted that the power plants of Malton are no longer operational in terms of producing electricity, whether through deliberate sabotage, decay and disrepair or simply the fact that there's no fuel that could be used to power them in significant quantities in the City. However, the terminals that monitor power consumption throughout the city are still in operation. Malton, a city on the forefront of technical and scientific development developed an extensive power grid that automatically recorded the amount of power being used by each suburb in Malton once every twelve hours and adjusted the power output accordingly.

Basically, I am suggesting that the top square of both the power station is turned into Power station - control centre. Or something like that. If a survivor is in that area, and that area is powered and not ransacked they can, for one AP check the power levels of a particular suburb. This would appear as a drop-down menu with a list of suburbs. Selecting a particular suburb would get the message

Warning. Suburb XXX is only XX% powered.

The percentage of the suburb that is powered is, of course gained by counting how many of the powerable buildings are powered.

The percentages are updated once every twelve hours. Don't ask me how this would be coded for.

The interior description for the power station control room would now be something like

Powered: You are standing in XXX power station control room. Cables and lights blink and hum. One of the computer banks still seems to be functioning.

Unpowered: You are standing in XXX power station control room. The lights and dials lining the wall are dead.

Essentially I would like to create a reason for power stations to be defended. At the moment they serve little purpose, but I can think of several groups dedicated to powering buildings to help survivors who would love something like this, you could even have a separate radio station set up for requesting checks on power levels in a certain suburb. Of course, where a building provides an advantage for survivors, Zombies and PK'ers are not far behind!

Edit

  • Thanks a lot to everybody on the talkpage for their contributions.
  • As far as I am aware, there is no technology around at present that could do this, if this is implemeted, It will be based on the same suspension of disbelief that allows for necrotech syrynges and the like.--Seventythree 17:02, 20 July 2007 (BST)

  2. Interesting- I stroke fluffy white cats to this suggestion.--Karekmaps?! 14:36, 20 July 2007 (BST)
  3. Keep - Well written, and brings some meta-game info inside Malton. I like the justification for making Power Stations useful to keep - you've overcome my cynicism. 'arm. 16:46, 20 July 2007 (BST)
  4. Weak Keep The idea is one of the better power station ideas I've seen, but I think its a dupe of something...If someone gets a link, you can delete my vote.--Wooty 16:48, 20 July 2007 (BST)
  5. Keep - It's good but in reality you wouldn't be able to check power levels in a suburbs powered by generators. --Sonny Corleone RRF CoL DORIS CRF pr0n 16:50, 20 July 2007 (BST)
  6. Keep - To quote a homemaking expert turned white-collar criminal, "It's a good thing." --Ryiis 17:04, 20 July 2007 (BST)
  7. Keep - Interesting... it's far superior to the majority of powerplant suggestions... --Charley C. 17:13, 20 July 2007 (BST)
  8. Keep - I was just thinking what Sonny was saying while I was reading. Maybe they're magic wires. I still like it though. --Druuuuu 19:09, 20 July 2007 (BST)
  9. Keep - Saying this technology doesn't exist would be invalid in my opinion, as there are no zombies either, or necrotech syringes... --  AHLGTG THE END IS NIGH! 19:19, 20 July 2007 (BST)
  10. Keep - Getting info in-game is always better than meta-game. --Midianian 19:31, 20 July 2007 (BST)

  14. keep - Nice. Maybe at the larger one have the ability to check the percentage of the city (xx.xx%) and the smaller one specific suburbs (xx%)? --Ducis DuxSlothTalk 23:12, 20 July 2007 (BST)
  15. keep - love it! we need more ideas like this.--'BPTmz 00:16, 21 July 2007 (BST)
  16. Keep - I could actually see zombies having a use for keeping the power plant running with this suggestion. --Gateking 01:31, 21 July 2007 (BST)
  17. I like it.IMPLEMENT IT ALREADY!!XD!!Chill 04:04, 21 July 2007 (BST)

  20. Keep - I never thought I would ever vote for a powerplant change. --Coco1993 19:34, 1 August 2007 (BST)

Kill Votes

  1. Kill - I like my one better.... http://wiki.urbandead.com/index.php/PR_Buildings:_Specific_Types#Power_Network_Monitoring_Board --Gene Splicer 02:19, 21 July 2007 (BST) I put this in "Kill" as opposed to "Dupe" on purpose, and as the author of the PR'd suggestion, I feel I am more qualified to decide which it is than anyone :P. I feel his idea is different enough from mine to be voted on, I just honestly like my one better in certain aspects. Mine brings up an NT style map and gives flat numbers as opposed to a percentage(these I feel are superior in terms of balance, and are easier to code/use existing code). 73's has one square being alloted as the control centre, with the data only being viewable from there (which I think is actually better than the "anywhere powered in the building" of my suggestion, flavour and ease of understandingwise). Mine is realtime, his is stored (not sure which is better). As Swiers said, I think an amalgamation of the two would be good... but on a one to one, I think mine is better, and some things addressed in mine are not addressed here. --Gene Splicer 12:55, 21 July 2007 (BST)
  2. Change -It should use numbers instead of percentages (maybe like "warning: only XX of the XX buildings in suburb X have power") and use current numbers to make it need less recording space.--AlexanderRM 00:03, 22 July 2007 (BST)
  3. Kill - I'm all for suspension of disbelief... but meh. It's a zombie apocalypse... no central control/oversight -- boxy T Nuts block it! DA 14:20, 25 July 2007 (BST)

Spam/Dupe Votes

  1. Dupe' Damn, had to change my vote. I like Gene Splicers version better as well, although I could see mixing elements of the two (only one Monitoring Board location per PP, use %'s instead of raw #s or at least also give the total number of structures as a denominator). Oh well, no shame in coming up with a well-written, well considered dupe- lord knows I've done it! . . . swiers BigEYEwitnessLOGO.png 02:34, 21 July 2007 (BST) Sure, I'm up for some overhauling. Its not like my dupe vote is gonna sink this thing now though. I could change to kill, but I like my dupe votes will likely amount to an abstain, which is more accurate. . . . swiers BigEYEwitnessLOGO.png 19:57, 21 July 2007 (BST)
RE Ok, Gene splicer has convinced me it's not a dupe. If he feels like working on a combined idea, That would be cool. Swiers, If you're interested as well? I know you're Interested in this sort of thing, and you might well ahve some insight into some of the potential problems that I don't know about like codes and the like. --Seventythree 12:15, 21 July 2007 (BST)
