20071025 Profile Emote

Jon Pyre 23:32, 25 October 2007 (BST)

Suggestion type
Roleplaying, Fun

Suggestion scope
Survivors/Zombies

Suggestion description
Emotes are conspicuously missing from Urban Dead, and I can see why. Who really wants spam from "Bill is laughing" and "A zombie is barfing"? Kinda funny if one person does it, pretty annoying if there are fifty emotes to ignore. But there's a way to do it without spam.

Let people set their emote in their profile, just like they can their clothing. There would be a drop down menu with a wide list of options "sneezing", "barfing", "grinning evilly", etc.

So why do this instead of just typing it in your profile? Because players would be able to see emotes all at once, instead of just one at a time, like profiles. There would be a "examine others" link, next to your buy skills, profile, etc. links on the left side of the screen. That link takes you to a window summarizing the emotes of everyone at your current location. So you might see:

  • Phil runs in place.
  • Sandy is checking their watch.
  • Duncan tosses a knife to themself.

If multiple people do something then you see...

Sandy, Larry, and Betty are checking their watches.

So this lets a group perform the same action to express solidarity:

Ben, Mandy, Jeff, and Erin are cleaning their guns.

Zombies wouldn't be left out either:

A zombie slobbers profusely. (this would not give the zombie's profile link)

Ten zombies grin with happy rotten smiles.

So your profile is your personal in depth description, your emote is what you want people to see on a quick scan of the emote page. Your emote is also listed with your profile, beneath the list of clothing.

Changing your emote or checking emotes would not cost any AP. And because you have to choose to look at emotes this is 100% spam free!

Humans and zombies would have different available emotes.

Optionally, have certain skills provide additional emotes. For example maybe a zombie emote like "drools endlessly" would require Digestion. And perhaps solve the excess xp problem by letting people purchase additional emotes, and add a new number on people's profiles "Emotes Purchased: X". If there were a few hundred emotes to buy and they each costed something that would be a nice place to sink your experience. "Smiles" could be free, but "juggles ten knives" might deserve a price.

I think this would be a fun way of improving group gameplay in UD.

Keep Votes

  1. Jon Pyre points enthusiastically at the suggestion (23:36, 25 October 2007) (BST)
  2. Keep Interesting, I had a half hearted look for dupes in the PR category and couldn't find one, And I like it. --SeventythreeTalk 23:41, 25 October 2007 (BST)
  3. Keep - There was a thing like this, but not it. So I vote keep. doc crook 23:43, 25 October 2007 (BST)
  4. Keep - Great way to spend XP! I like it. --Uncle Bill 23:45, 25 October 2007 (BST)
  5. Keep - could have fun with this.--Pavluk A! E! 23:46, 25 October 2007 (BST)
  6. Keep - Anything that has something to do with profiles is + in my books.--  AHLGTG THE END IS NIGH! 23:47, 25 October 2007 (BST) GAAAH! Double edit conflict!!!!
  7. Beep - Nice idea, except in Creedy where everybody is constantly polishing guns and wearing trenchcoats.Studoku 00:20, 26 October 2007 (BST)
  8. Keep - SuperDeathKillGoku is giggling like a schoolgirl. --Steakfish 02:03, 26 October 2007 (BST)
  9. Very Weak Keep - I agree that it is pretty pointless, but it serves a point... I guess... --WOOT 03:34, 26 October 2007 (BST)
  10. Hell, why not? - i.e., Weak Keep. Frankly, we do not in any way, shape, or form need this. But it could be fun. Except I am confused: can I enter my own "staus/emote" a la FaceMyBookSpace (you don't like those sites? tough), or are they preset? It seems like the latter... it'd kinda have to be the latter, with some the WEIRDOS and social misfits we get here... you know, like me... And, uhm, call me lame or whatnot, but I check out profiles frequently, hmph... --WanYao 03:49, 26 October 2007 (BST)
  11. Weak Keep/Change - I really couldn't give a rats' ass what people are doing, but voting kill or spam is just fucking stupid. He specifically said there'd be a separate summary page you could choose to view, or not, in order to see this. Not in any way would it be shoved in your face all the damned time so those who despise it are free to ignore it, while those non-metagamers who get ingame use out of it can benefit, soloist survivor and feral zombie alike. --Slightly Lions 09:34, 26 October 2007 (BST)
    • Uurgh, forgot to include the change idea I originally intended to throw in: If we do the custom emote, might make that more expensive, 20xp, to buy, and...should it have an xp cost per each custom emote set, just to discourage overuse? Also, what about emotes based on your inventory or surroundings? "A zombie snarls and strains at the barricades..." "DrMcNinja takes inventory of his medical supplies and syringes." Just a few ideas. --Slightly Lions 09:45, 26 October 2007 (BST)
  12. Not Enthusiastic Keep- Why not? Just ignore it and there should be no problem. BoboTalkClown 21:01, 26 October 2007 (BST)
  13. Keep I'm there, man. I happen to like wasting my time on pointless crap. Kill voters should quit trying to ruin the fun for me. --MrCoolantSpray 23:59, 26 October 2007 (BST)
  14. Keep- Let's make the game more FUNFUN! --VkkhamulT! A! FU! U 01:06, 27 October 2007 (BST)
  15. Keep - But don't make the buyable ones cost >50 XP apiece. --Howard Bentley 04:39, 27 October 2007 (BST)
  16. Keep - Sounds awesome. --Sonofagun18 05:22, 27 October 2007 (BST)
  17. Keep - Why not? --O'Sheehy 17:54, 27 October 2007 (BST)
  18. Keep - Yay! Now I can grin "With a mad glint in my eye" Captain Winters 05:57, 29 October 2007 (UTC)
  19. Keep - UD is starting to get freakin' boring. A suggestion like this could make it more interesting. --Hhal 01:20, 30 October 2007 (UTC)
  20. Keep - I like it because of the ability to spend excess XP. Otherwise, it's not described the way i see it happening. It sounds good, but in implication it might look kinda silly. Like the idea though. --Kikashie ELT 03:57, 31 October 2007 (UTC)
  21. Keep - I don't normally vote but I love the idea that it could reflect your superficial mood or actions. Also a worthwhile spending of accumulated XP. --Conan2 16:09, 31 October 2007 (UTC)
  22. Keep - Sounds good to me--Zach016 12:05, 7 November 2007 (UTC)
  23. Keep - Being able to block emotes, and emotes costing xp to use is a good idea. --Ducis DuxSlothTalk 22:23, 8 November 2007 (UTC)

Kill Votes

  1. Kill pointless, you can just put it in your description, that's what it is for. --Pvt De 00:13, 26 October 2007 (BST)
    • Re It would be pointless, if it only showed up on your profile page. However the purpose of this suggestion is to allow people to display their emotes along with everyone else's on a single page. And I use my description as a physical description. I don't want to retype it every day. This would let me set a quick attitude. Heck, people could even use this to vote, 15 people are giving thumbs up, 5 people are giving thumbs down--Jon Pyre 04:16, 26 October 2007 (BST)
  2. Kill - Agreed with above. It's better to strain one's own creative juices than to have Kevan do it for them. --Private Mark 03:13, 26 October 2007 (BST)
  3. Kill - Flavour that encourages UD to look like MySpace is bad flavour. --Pgunn 03:27, 26 October 2007 (BST)
  4. Kill - Static emotes? Hell no. --Midianian|T|T:S|C:RCS| 08:46, 26 October 2007 (BST)
    • Re I think a persisting emote makes sense considering UD is turn based. Time is kind of wonky here. It makes sense to pick what you're more or less doing until you next log in, and then stick with it. The same way a zombie breaks in and it takes four hours for anyone to react, spending a day "sleeping soundly" or "humming a quiet tune" also makes sense. I think it'd be interesting from an RP perspective to see what people think their characters are doing during the day. That makes it a reflection of the character's personality. "Bill is meticulously cleaning out their guns". If you see that emote it isn't that Bill cleaned out some guns. It means they're the type of person that cleans out guns. --Jon Pyre 14:25, 26 October 2007 (BST)
Yeah, it might be interesting to see what people think they're doing, but the thing is that most wouldn't bother to change it more often than maybe once a month. If I'm interested in what type of a person someone is, I'll look in their description box. And UD isn't turn based, it's AP-based. --Midianian|T|T:S|C:RCS| 16:38, 26 October 2007 (BST)
  5. - It's a nice try, but emotes really need to have a timestamp to let people know when you did what. - Whitehouse 15:02, 26 October 2007 (BST)
  6. Kill - As Pgunn. --ZombieSlay3rSig.pngT 15:41, 26 October 2007 (BST)
  7. kill - has promise but would need a list of available emotes which would need to be in genre. looking around a room and seeing a dozen folk "cleaning guns" a few more "caring for the injured" while others might simply be "resting" would be good... watching them all "dancing" or "playing tag" would not! While you could put these things in your profile making them all list anonymously on a separate page could be vaguely interesting (for about 3 days) --Honestmistake 17:14, 26 October 2007 (BST)
    • Re I didn't list the avaiable emotes because ideally, there would be dozens, or perhaps no limit, like clothing. There could be a section of the suggestions page to suggest new emotes. However I agree that they would need to be in genre. Something like "gently strums a ukulele while feeding bananas to a bonobo monkey" wouldn't be added. --Jon Pyre 23:10, 26 October 2007 (BST)
  8. Kill- This is a pointless addition. First off there is a little box called descriptions in the UD profile, this is already an appropriate place to add an "emote" expression (since an expression would be a description). What is the point of having yet another option on the settings page when there already is an option that covers this suggestion? And secondly I, for one, like to make up my own expressions, instead of some stupid predetermined emote. Where is the creativity, and how exactly would that enrich the role-playing aspect of UD? Answer: There is no creativity, and this only detracts from the whole UD experience.-- BKM 17:46, 29 October 2007 (UTC)
  9. Kill - I don't like this, especially since there is already a box for this. --Druuuuu 19:35, 29 October 2007 (UTC)
  10. Kill I have yet to find a MMORPG that does ALL of the RPing for you. Don't make this the first. If you really want emotes, try geeting the ole /me or /em in... ~A`Blue`JellyTME*V*I*L*? 01:30, 30 October 2007 (UTC)
  11. Kill - I honestly do not give a shit if Sally is checking her watch, and I don't want it to spam my screen, please. -J. A. 23:44, 31 October 2007 (UTC)

Spam/Dupe Votes

  1. Spam - Utterly ridiculous, we don't need a bunch of people in mirrored glasses with high visibility jackets constaly cleaning their guns or people in kilts grinning 24/7. It's dumb and just another thing to distract from the real reasons people view profiles, groups and skills.--Karekmaps?! 23:57, 25 October 2007 (BST)
What have you been taking man? People don't check profiles, if they did death cultists would not be so successful. - Pardus 03:04, 26 October 2007 (BST) Non-author RE, and also just plain wrong.--Karekmaps?! 04:12, 26 October 2007 (BST)
Re This would allow groups of people to rp better, improving group dynamics. Imagine seeing 100 people observing a moment of silence. Or a dozen people "on high alert". Or ten zombies "hunting in packs".--Jon Pyre 04:13, 26 October 2007 (BST)
You have, quite possibly, found the only way for me to hate this suggestion more. --Karekmaps?! 04:23, 26 October 2007 (BST)
  2. Spam - It's silly.-- dǝǝɥs ɯɐds: sʎɐʍ1ɐ! 00:05, 26 October 2007 (BST)
  3. Spam - I don't know that zombies can take a bite out of you while grinning.--Perne 01:09, 26 October 2007 (BST)
  4. Spam - Sockem takes a headshot and dies. Sockem is running in place. See anything stupid in there? Sockem 06:31, 26 October 2007 (BST)
    • Re Simple. Just exclude the emotes of dead bodies. --Jon Pyre 13:26, 26 October 2007 (BST)
  5. Spam - Funt Solo Scotland flag.JPG hates this suggestion -- 08:59, 26 October 2007 (BST)
  6. Spam - Jesus, why. People would set their emotes, and just forget them, so even if the zombies had been harrying them for days on end, it'd be "Harry is smiling"... blah -- boxytalk • 10:54 27 October 2007 (BST)
  7. Spam - The Grimch jumps on the bandwagon and yells "Giddyap!" 12:13, 7 November 2007 (UTC)
