Talk:Building Types
All Buildings
We should add some typical flavor text to the individual building pages, if they're ever implemented. Just because there wouldn't be much else to put on them. From memory: cinema "a foreign film still playing silently on the screen". Hospital: "its gleaming corridors abandoned during the evacuation". Cemetary:"the grass between its headstones peaceful and undisturbed"--Milo 05:14, 13 Sep 2005 (BST)
Excellent thought! And certainly relevant to the individual locations we already have! --otherlleft 11:31, 13 Sep 2005 (BST)
I've begun doing this on the individual Mall's pages. Since I intend to do a full Mall Crawl, I'll get to each Mall in time, though people are welcome to fill in the ones I haven't got to yet -- Odd Starter 06:22, 21 Sep 2005 (BST)
Also, we might want to list the type of items typically found in each building under the type. -- Kwil 16:51 15, Sep 2005 (MST)
I think "2x2 buildings" and "Large Buildings" should be spun off into their own page like "buildings" is instead of listed here. --dayfat 08:13, 16 Sep 2005 (BST)
The information on where to find which items is widely contradictory, or at least incomplete; which is more accurate, the Building Types section or the Items section? I think maybe there should be a page just for searching info; for (a poor) example, is there a greater chance of finding a pistol in a PD or Gun Store? --LouisB3 21:11, 20 Sep 2005 (BST)
- I think that's a great idea. I'll go start on that now, with what little I know. Should be quite helpful to those trying to figure out where to look for stuff. --Raelin 21:20, 20 Sep 2005 (BST)
I've been thinking - There are more than enough Malls that having them as their own category makes sense. Should we make a Category for the other building types (like Mansions or Cathedrals)? I made the Mall category because heck, most malls are going to be reasonably important places (since they attract low-level players like flies), but I'm divided as to whether the Mansions and Cathedrals are in a similar situation. Anyone want to comment? -- Odd Starter 06:22, 21 Sep 2005 (BST)
- Yeah, I would say they deserve their own categories. I would also suggest making them subcategories of a "Large Buildings" category. --Raelin 06:35, 21 Sep 2005 (BST)
- I'm not too sure about that one, actually - Buildings and Large Building are still just buildings, there's no meaningful reason to differentiate them, apart from the fact that they occupy more than one space on the map. Different building types, I can see, but a large building categories doesn't seem quite kosher. Keeping the distinction on this page, I think, makes the distinction clear enough for anyone needing to know the difference between, say, a church and a cathedral (which is the only time the distinction is clear and meaningful). -- Odd Starter 07:02, 21 Sep 2005 (BST)
- Yeah, I see your point. Mainly suggested it simply for organizational purposes. Though, since only the large buildings have their own per-building pages, I can see why it wouldn't make much sense. --Raelin 07:20, 21 Sep 2005 (BST)
- Some Police Stations and such have singular pages too, but you're right - only the larger buildings have individual pages, probably because there's few enough of them. Perhaps we should give all pages about locations categories, but only for larger buildings keep a comprehensive listing (After all, there are plenty of police stations, but not all of them are at all interesting enough to support an entire wiki page). -- Odd Starter 07:35, 21 Sep 2005 (BST)
Find Averages
Perhaps the find averages for each building could be added.
- added data on guns and ammo for Malls and PDs which I got from Blue Emu who claims to have logged 2000+ search attempts. Must confess I'm not willing to fully test the search precentages for mobile phones.--Markus 06:26, 29 Sep 2005 (BST)
Toolboxes?
Toolboxes do not yet seem to be listed as findable items on this page. I'd add them myself, but last I checked there seems to be some debate as to where one can find them.... I know they can be found in Auto Shops, cuz I got one there, but otherwise -- ??? So if someone who knows better could add tookboxes to this page, that'd be a great help! Thanks. --WanYao 14:35, 22 August 2007 (BST)
Large Buildings
Malls
Tompson Hat Store, etc.
Says I can search it!? What would I find, a whole whack 'o nothin? Also, isn't there a kilt store, too? If it can be searched, too... then both of stores ought to be listed on this page, for completeness' sake. Or, if it's sorta to be kept a "secret", how about something like: "A few mall contain speciality stores, usually offering the chance to add unique types of clothing for flavour purposes. Although you are able to search them if you have the Shopping skill, nothing of value can be found inside." Assuming, of course, that's the case. --WanYao 05:21, 4 September 2007 (BST)
- If you search Hat Store in Tompson you get such a message: The shop has nothing but hats. (To wear one, click the 'Settings' button in the sidebar.). This doesn't use AP. I don't think more than just "A few malls contain clothes stores..." should be listed --~~~~ [Talk] 11:01, 4 September 2007 (BST)
Mall power
Query for you all folks. If the elevators are now working and allowing anyone to wander around the malls, then what would happen if there isn't a working generator in the mall? Elevators aren't run by clockwork - they need a power supply. If the generators were allowed to run out of fuel would things go back to how they had been before? And if not... why not? --Andrew Baxter 13:43, 5 Jan 2006 (GMT)
- Corridores and hallways, If the there is a stairway who needs an elevator, heck the zombie would not know how to use an elevator it if it tryed. It is stairs and hallways which also connect buildings
Other Large Buildings
After finding St. Telesphorus's Church by chance, I added it to the Large Buildings section, and made a program to search for other buildings named the same next to each other. Apart from St. Irenaeus's Church (Raines Hills) I only found Junkyards, Factories and Warehouses next to each other - no other named buildings. I've now tried one of each - Junkyards [63, 7]-[64, 7], Factories [72, 3]-[72, 4] and Warehouses [73, 10]-[73, 11] - with none of them being connected. It seems that only adjacent named buildings are Large Buildings --xensyriaT 15:34, 17 December 2007 (UTC)
Complexes
Fort
Fort update
We'll need to get some numbers for the new fort buildings. -Certified=Insane☭ 01:44, 21 November 2006 (UTC)
- Numbers meaning, what, exactly? GPS? Daniel Hicken 18:14, 21 November 2006 (UTC)
- Search rates. That and items we can find in them (obviously). -Certified=Insane☭ 01:43, 22 November 2006 (UTC)
Should Forts now be considered large buildings as opposed to complexes, given the bottleneck entrance/exits through the Gatehouse? Daniel Hicken 02:19, 22 November 2006 (UTC)
Leaving Forts
I know this goes against something we have to drill into UD newbies time and time again, but, if the gatehouse is heavily barricaded, you cannot leave a fort. You can free run out of the Gatehouse - but only to a square inside the fort walls.
I've just added this to the page. Try it out for yourselves if you think I am wrong.

Normal Buildings
Arms
Question: "Arms" is IMHO misleading and should be changed to ((Pubs)). Any objections, ideas why it is the way it is?--Markus 07:58, 15 Sep 2005 (BST)
- Among other things, it's what they're named as in the game. And it's not actually all that confusing if you're familiar with British pub names :) I say keep them as Arms -- Odd Starter 08:51, 16 Sep 2005 (BST)
- I'm American. When I first saw the "Arms" place, I thought it was somewhere I could get ammo. Sure, that one dude from Shaun of the Dead kept a shotgun in his pub, but it definitely isn't the arsenal I was expecting. --Radoteur 08:45, 29 Sep 2005 (BST)
- I think Shaun of the Dead is why you can find shotguns in pubs. --Kamikaze14 02:40, 29 November 2008 (UTC)
Junkyards
I just found a heavily barricaded junkyard with the following description:
- You are standing outside a junkyard, a patch of wasteland surrounded by a tall wire fence. The building has been very heavily barricaded. Somebody has spraypainted DON'T CUT THE FENCE FREE RUN IN onto a wall.
Wow - have I found an uncut junkyard? --LouisB3 21:43, 14 Dec 2005 (GMT)
There is one in Roachtown which is an uncut junkyard. It seems that they are not as rare as we first though. Perhaps people quickly caught on to how valueable they are. --Arajex Khlrx 13:40, 22 Jan 2006 (GMT)
It seems that Kevan added some flavor to junkyards too, I found a "Rusty" Knife there... --Lord Evans 21:38, 18 November 2006 (UTC)
- Or rather to knives. I found a "pocket knife" in a mall hardware store... -Certified=Insane☭ 21:59, 18 November 2006 (UTC)
Museums
I was searching a museum that housed a collection of European art (according to the building description). All I could find was European paintings, with a few torn or burned paintings. Do different museums enable you to find different items?--Koppie 17:42, 21 March 2007 (UTC)
Police Department
I personally have noticed when searching Police Stations repeatedly for ammo that radios can occasionally be found, but they aren't listed under items that can be found at Police Stations on this page. Should we consider a revision? - Sergei Stephanovich
Anyone else had really bad search rates at PDs lately? Is it possible they've been reduced?--Nallan (Talk) 03:27, 13 May 2010 (BST)
I know this is ages after everything else (or I think so anyway), but I just spent all my AP searching a police station, and found 1 pistol clip, two shotguns (both loaded with a single shell each), and no less than FOUR radios. Perhaps the percentage change for radios is wrong? -- Shokking79
Warehouse
There's a glaring contradiction in the Warehouse section: "it's not believed that they ever contain anything useful. Items to find: fire axe, fuel can, length of pipe"
Can anybody resolve this? --Alicia Jennings 10:39, 5 Oct 2005 (BST)
General Page Editing
Mere Words cannot contain my anger
There are a lot of spaces after the graveyard. Editing it i found freaking ads. - Quote "Also, ideal for making a last stand against the undead swarms.
I showed this so I can then delete it. Look it up in the page history. Whoever is responsible for smuggling in adverts shall swing. -- Andrew McM 22:00, 14 Dec 2005 (GMT)
- Deleted the part that didn't show up, hope you don't mind. --Matthew-Stewart 08:27, 17 Dec 2005 (GMT)
- Re - I'm also getting a terrible felling of Deja-vu. I think something like this happened before... -- Andrew McM 22:05, 14 Dec 2005 (GMT)
I don't think filling the talk page up with the spam that's been fended off ofr the last few days is going to help. --LouisB3 22:19, 14 Dec 2005 (GMT)
Sorry, i'm pretty pissed off. There, shortened. -- Andrew McM 22:29, 14 Dec 2005 (GMT)
Heh. Ativan is an anti-anxiety agent. A lot of survivors could probably do with some. --Hendrik Casimir 09:15, 15 Dec 2005 (GMT)
Structure Type Breakdown
I've compiled a list of the structure breakdown for all of Malton (no, I didn't count it manually, I made my computer do it for me), and I was wondering if anyone had thoughts on how to incorporate this into the existing building pages? --Burgan 23:30, 14 July 2006 (BST)
- There was something wrong with most of the totals, so I re-calculated them and have added them to each individual block type. --Funt Solo QT 09:58, 16 February 2008 (UTC)
Images
Eh... i like some of added images and not really some other. Also i like a lot (but also not all) these images by Mobius187 (that are used on many location pages) (oh, and they're all >= year old): Image:MaltonHospital.jpg, Image:MaltonNecroTech.jpg, Image:MaltonCemetery.jpg, Image:MaltonCarpark.jpg, Image:MaltonPoliceStation.jpg, Image:MaltonFireStation.jpg, Image:MaltonPark.jpg, Image:MaltonWasteland.jpg --~~~~ [talk] 21:15, 13 February 2008 (UTC)
- ...and Image labelled as Curton Mansion significally differs from image on Curton Mansion... You really should have used as much as possible existing images, Funt, instead of uploading all brand new --~~~~ [talk] 21:19, 13 February 2008 (UTC)
- Just a small thing, but I figured the Forts where more like the ugly squat WW2 concrete monstrosoties, not Medievil ones. Having said that, I guess they could have just taken the old forts over. --SeventythreeTalk 21:54, 13 February 2008 (UTC)
- Well, as I added them, anyone is free to alter them - this being a wiki and all. I had no idea those other ones existed. As it is, I wanted all colour pics, so those existing ones aren't much use for what I had planned. Also, I had a specific size in mind to keep them uniform. As for the mansion - I know it's different, but of all the mansion pics, the existing one was the most obscure, so if you squint a bit, they are the same. I don't know - you can't please all the people all of the time - but I thought it was a fun project that nobody else had bothered to do for, what, years. (With the forts, I agree with you, 73, but couldn't find any on a quick google - feel free to replace it. I'm not that bothered. Most of the heavy lifting is done.) --Funt Solo QT 21:57, 13 February 2008 (UTC)
- Oh, one technical point - I was careful to save all the images as actual size gifs (160*120), optimised for the web (using Photoshop), so as not to overload the page. --Funt Solo QT 21:59, 13 February 2008 (UTC)
- Cool! If I find anything decent, I'll do that. Or leave it. Depends. I've been creating individual building description pages for a week or so, and to be honest I've been stuck trying to find a decent fort pic. Closest I got was a screenshot from one of those WW2 games, medal of honour I think. I might just get on with the project and use this pic, for now at least. Feel free to chip in if you want, by the way!--SeventythreeTalk 22:01, 13 February 2008 (UTC)
- I've googled out this, but it's too much of a bird-view and this is metal gate with damn fitting spray, but too weak and then a lot of other not-fitting stuff... it all makes me think more and more that nobody really cares these days to build military compounds with giant walls and such stuff. Just for a note, when i decided to switch in google image search with thew string i was on at the moment ("military compound gatehouse") to the web serach - i got "Building Types - The Urban Dead Wiki" as the first result (!) --~~~~ [talk] 23:03, 13 February 2008 (UTC)

Got to say, I'll probably use those black and whites for when I do the open land page. (I hate the police station one - it's got a perfectly intact car on it, and US flags all over the place. I was careful to choose images that left the question of Malton's exact location up in the air.) --Funt Solo QT 22:18, 13 February 2008 (UTC)
- i don't like us flags on it and fire station one too <_< --~~~~ [talk] 22:31, 13 February 2008 (UTC)
- I couldn't upload these when I tried, may be something to do with my PC. But here is the link to a photo of a firestation without any flags or such. http://www.northampton.org.uk/photographs/wdf_gallery/northampton_upper_mounts_fire_station_1.jpg
Can't find a PD at the moment.... I'll keep my eye out though.--SeventythreeTalk 23:10, 13 February 2008 (UTC)
Monroeville
Do we really need to update this page now so that it fits in with Monroeville? Especially, given that Monroeville may be temporary, does it make sense to add stuff here that refers to it? --Funt Solo QT 13:21, 5 March 2008 (UTC)
- even Kevan doesn't know the future of Monroevlle, so you cannot say confidently that it is temporary and reason your action based on this. Right now this article is in state i'ld like it to be: it describes Malton building types and clearly, unequivocally states that it is about Malton. Unlike Malton, Monroeville has more buildings types and open land types and there'll be a separate page about them. --~~~~ [talk] 19:17, 5 March 2008 (UTC)
- I agree: it was more the edit I removed that I was concerned about, where the guy had updated the page to say "but that's not how it works in Monroeville". I suppose for this page, it's not such a big issue, as long as we don't start adding barns and whatnot. Monroeville info. needs to be separate, somehow. I think. Maybe I'm just a stick in the mud. --Funt Solo QT 22:56, 5 March 2008 (UTC)
Borehamwood
What's the equivalent of malls, the Supermarket? Will shopping let you search sections of the market? If so, I'll just work my way towards Shopping and find a knife there. Apocalyptic doom 20:04, 7 November 2008 (UTC)
- No, Borehamwood supermarkets aren't equal to malls. actually they don't even have any stores that would appear visible with shopping skill, consider them to be a giant Liquor Stores (beer and wine). Shopping Centers might be different, there is one in East BHW and one in Elstree. --~~~~ [talk] 20:20, 7 November 2008 (UTC)
