Thank you for the warm welcome. My name is Tank and I've been playing Urban Dead since 2006 but I just so recently found out how to work my way around this site. Now that I've finally gotten the hang of things, I'll be able to update information and be as helpful as I can. I can't really think of anything else to say so stay in touch, good buddy! {{unsigned|Tank1777}}

Thanks for the welcome Bob, I actually played UD a while back and me and my friends are just getting back into it. We're thinking about scoping out Fort Creedy and working on it slowly but surely. We're not sure if we'll base ourselves out of Pegton or Edgecombe but I figured I have AP so I'd update the Danger Map as much as possible while I'm at it. Thanks for the welcome Bob, I am a newbie. I was a bit busy finding NT facilities and updating Danger Status. Can you tell me whether the resources regenerate when it is taken away by a survivor from its original location? And anything from my side, just ask. Hey Bob. I noticed you reverted the changes I made to the group listings in some of the suburbs I frequent due to me not being a member of said groups. How are we supposed to keep that section up to date in light of the fact there hasn't been an accounting of active and inactive groups on the wiki since 2013? Thanks -[[User:JAZED|JAZED]] ([[User talk:JAZED|talk]]) 20:48, 22 January 2019 (UTC)
:I would suggest asking said groups on their talk page and if they don't reply in a few weeks, I wouldn't have a problem taking them off. {{User:DanceDanceRevolution/sig5}} 22:31, 22 January 2019 (UTC)
:Hi Jazed! The short answer is to second what DDR said above — a group in question needs to be clearly inactive, not just visible in-game, to be de-listed. If the group puts an inactivity template on their page, then it's fine to de-list them; otherwise, you should leave a message on their talk page specifically regarding their listings, and if they fail to respond in, I'd say a month, you can remove the listings.
:The longer answer is that the original impetus for the existence of the GSGMs wasn't how out-of-date group listings were, but because the listings on each suburb page were becoming untenably long. That's definitely not the case on [[User:Bob_Moncrief/Groupmap|the current lists]]. The goal of having an up-to-date set of listings has always been secondary, but, that being said, we are definitely overdue for another [[GSGM]]. Are you interested in helping out? Please leave your signature [[The Great Suburb Group Massacre/2019/Volunteer Organization#Volunteers|here]] and we'll let you know when we get started. if you feel it's a major problem please make sure to get involved, and get those you know involved, in the GSGM. Seeing more volunteers listed there would definitely give the Massacre a kick in the pants. {{User:Bob Moncrief/Sig}} 22:41, 22 January 2019 (UTC)

I'm only back to the game since a few weeks, and wasn't aware RR was even active anymore. All but one of my old contacts have their names crossed out. I saw one other member at my old NT building, but it otherwise seemed to be operating on the strength of tradition. Kind of makes sense because honestly what was the point? Well I left out of boredom, and I'm up in Houldenbank tagging along with some folks who like to repair phone masts, and I run into this joker.

==THANKS MAN==
Half a decade seems an awfully long time to hold a grudge against a mostly inactive group. The Greatorex clinic is powered but barricaded, and I see no indication of anyone trying to bring it back. Their group page hasn't been updated in 4 years. Was this person even a member, or do you think he was just looking to start trouble in the suburb? What the hell are they even using for a PKer database anymore?

:Wow! Haven't heard of RR=PR being active in ages. That said, I've never run a survivor in the southeast. It's possible Michael is maintaining a personal bounty list — the most recently-active major bounty board was on NecroConnect, which is still up but hasn't been updated in at least a year. {{User:Bob Moncrief/Sig}} 05:06, 10 February 2019 (UTC)
::Thanks for the response and info. I haven't used the wiki in a long time and forgot how to check. I left some graffiti in Houldenbank declaring RR defunct, which I rather thought it was at the time, and it's certainly defunct in Houldenbank. I wouldn't have left except I didn't want to get the people with me killed. I'll be damned if I'm removing the group tag though. I was thinking of going back to the Mad Craskers but not now! ===sorry man===
Thank you for the greeting, Mr. Moncrief. There's a lot to learn in Malton and I really appreciate having someone I can ask for a word of advice.
I do have one question: I've noticed some people have a really nice little page set up for their character and I was wondering if there was a link that perhaps had a template for making up such a page. It would be nice if it had instructions or recipes for making those jolly little -?buttons? I don't know the real name- rectangular boxes that have a few words explaining the owner believes in this or that policy or supports a particular group.  Do you know the little label-thingees I mean?

Hi, please excuse a sort of dopey question, but I just noticed that my signature has the word "Talk" in parentheses behind my main character's username. What did I do to make that happen? Other people rarely seem to have that; it's usually just their usernames. I'm not sure how to alter it to plain "Catherine Cushing". Would you happen to have a link about fixing this, or...(should I stop thinking about this)? Thanks for your time.--[[User:Catherine Cushing|Catherine Cushing]] ([[User talk:Catherine Cushing|talk]]) 10:08, 27 February 2019 (UTC)
:I know I'm not Bob, but I'm going to answer anyway :P All generic signatures will have it looking like yours, so it's nothing you've done. You can create an alternate one if you like, which changes the way your signature appears. If you want to do that, and need a hand, we're more than happy to help :) {{User:Stelar/sig}} 11:04, 27 February 2019 (UTC)
:Yep! The default appearance is "Username (talk)", where "talk" links to [[User talk:Catherine Cushing|your talk page]]. On my custom signature, for example, the word "Moncrief" links to my talk page instead. The basic instructions on how to change your signature are [[Help:Signatures|here]] — but as Stelar said, if you have any questions, just let us know! {{User:Bob Moncrief/Sig}} 12:21, 27 February 2019 (UTC)

==Revive Tool Confusion==

I could certainly use some help on my group page i'm editing, having some problems.
Hello, Bob. One of my characters ("Constance Claremont") is still on the DEM Revivification Tool request list thingee (http://tiny.cc/reviv). She got a revive a week ago. Was I supposed to edit her off the list? (And leave a thank-you note lower down the page?) I'm confused by this. Where exactly do I go to do this? There's no "editing" tab. Yes, I am the Samhain Sam also & yes, I am the creator of WMU and wishing to blank out the page. It was a failed group that never caught on. == A gift! Oh my gosh! ==
First of all, thanks for the kind welcome, but could you possibly remove my account here? I won't be coming back here.
As with the rest of the internet (which I've been both fortunate and unfortunate enough to see rise from it's earliest beginnings to it's current form) there are some good people here, capable discussion, debate and decency, however there are also those that find enjoyment in being as rude and obnoxious as possible in conveying their point. I have to admit, the more I see of society changing as it becomes connected, the more I am solidly convinced that we could improve the world by identifying and allowing homicidal sociopaths to sate their desires in a controlled manner on those without any modicum of restraint or courtesy.

== Don't see where I'm supposed to choose category ==

Happy hunting!
Hi, Bob. Sorry to bother you again, but I am confused by labeling the images I upload to the UD site. I feel badly that you always end up finishing up for me. I should know how to do this.
I know I'm supposed to designate a category, but I'm not sure of all the possible choices (I mean, is there a set list someplace of the 20 possible designation labels, for example, something really concrete like that?)
And besides choosing the best category to sort the image into, I don't understand where I'm supposed to post the label I choose - just in the "Descriptions" box?
Sorry to be so thick.  Thanks for your time. [[User:Catherine Cushing|<span style="font-family:Goudy Old Style;color:#008080;font-size:small">Catherine Cushing</span>]] [[User talk:Catherine Cushing|<span style="color:#F74A4A;font-size:small;font-family:Goudy Old Style">(talk)</span>]] 19:36, 29 March 2019 (UTC)
:Hi Catherine! All the highest-level subcategories can be seen in [[:Category:Images]]; I generally just file the image into one of those, unless it's of a building/location in which case I try to add it to the relevant category in [[:Category:Location Images]].
:When you upload a file, you can just type <nowiki>[[Category:ZZZ]]</nowiki> (where "ZZZ" is the relevant category name) in the description box.

== What is the wiki protocol? ==

==Thanks for the screencap Bob!==
Hi, Bob. I am writing about the McMurtrie Building page. http://wiki.urbandead.com/index.php/The_McMurtrie_Building

That was most excellent of you.  I hope you enjoyed meeting Triumph. I certainly enjoyed reading it and posting it at the [[Late Night TV Crue|Late Night TV Crue's]] page!--[[Image:SarahSig.png|90px|link=User:Sarah Silverman]] 20:26, 8 March 2013 (UTC)
What is the protocol for updating a common page like this? I haven't been able to find a reference to that procedure in the UD wiki. I'm terrified of doing a technical wiki-vandalism or some other offense out of ignorance.
:It was my pleasure! I always love when my in-game and wiki lives intersect, especially in such an entertaining fashion. Cheers! {{User:Bob Moncrief/Sig}} 03:06, 9 March 2013 (UTC)

==Thanks==
I would like to correct a piece of inaccurate information. Specifically, in the fifth paragraph: "...with the building currently serving as the Black Ops HQ for the Souless Survivors."
cheers mate, thanks for the welcome [[User:Sigga]] 11:26, 9 March 2013 (UTC)

== Don't think... ==
They are now based out of Rhodenbank. While it doesn't mention the Souless [sic] Survivors on the Rhodenbank page (for some reason) there is a userbox for the Souless on their own page that mentions Rhodenbank specifically. http://wiki.urbandead.com/index.php/Souless_Survivors    So, it should say: "...with the building formerly serving as the Black Ops HQ for Souless Survivors, now based in Rhodenbank."

...that I didn't see [http://wiki.urbandead.com/index.php?title=User:Bob_Moncrief&diff=2059832&oldid=2059830 this]. It's what prompted me to [[UDWiki:Administration/Sysop_Archives|start on it]]. Feel free to chip in. There's a to-do section at the bottom of the main page. Even the to-do section needs work at this point. {{User:Aichon/Signature}} 04:42, 9 March 2013 (UTC)
(Appropos of nothing, it drives me nuts that they spelled "soulless" incorrectly.)
:I thought that was a little coincidental... I may jump on this tomorrow morning - just checking in and out right now while I write a paper. Great job so far! {{User:Bob Moncrief/Sig}} 05:08, 9 March 2013 (UTC)

I've noticed spam gets replaced with the bp template before being deleted. Since I'm rapidly becoming a Recent Changes Stalker anyway, I wanted to ask if I should replace spam with the template, as well as reporting to the adbots page. You seemed the expert on that. --{{User:foxlion/Sig}} 07:58, 9 March 2013 (UTC)
:Hi Catherine!
:Yes, you should. I've been doing the replacing when I notice you've missed it. It's mostly just a convenience anyway - since all the bots ever seem to create is their own user page - but occasionally one will make a talk page, or something like that, so having the {{tl|bp}} template makes it easier for the sops to spot which page needs deletion. {{User:Bob Moncrief/Sig}} 16:39, 9 March 2013 (UTC)
:For location pages, you're totally welcome to make edits like the above, since they're intended to be updated by the community at large. The places to tread carefully are the group pages themselves — a group is considered to control its own group page, so any edits by outsiders there can be questionable. But location pages, you can edit freely. (The group members may come and undo the update, of course, but that means that they have some other information and may also update their group page to reflect it.)
:: All right, thank you for clarifying. I wanted to make sure it was not a syops duty before replacing uploads that were not mine. --{{User:foxlion/Sig}} 05:24, 10 March 2013 (UTC)
:So the edit you mentioned above should be a-ok! {{User:Bob Moncrief/Sig}} 00:56, 3 April 2019 (UTC)

I would've figured out the danger report editing's eventually, but thank you for the tip! I'm still learning how to drive this thing, ha. (Now let's see if I somehow manage to damage your entire talk page...) --[[User:Galaxina11|Galaxina11]] 21:34, 9 March 2013 (UTC)

== Question ==
Hi, what is the etiquette when nominating an unused image for deletion?  I want one gone especially because its gross. --{{User:Gardenator/sig}} 06:08, 5 April 2019 (UTC)
Thanks for the welcome. Anyway, I was wondering how I could spend my skill points. Do I have to wait until I have enough points to use? Also, this may be far-fetched but have you heard of any activity within MDK? Thanks a lot. --[[User:sfdrk|sfdrk]] 15:43, 14 March 2013 (EST)
:Just post a link to it on [[A/SD]], as long as it's been truly unused for at least two weeks. (Same is true if it's a prior revision of an image in use.) {{User:Bob Moncrief/Sig}} 11:10, 5 April 2019 (UTC)
:Certainly! Regarding skill points, you will have to wait until you have enough to buy a skill, which depends on your class (some classes get certain skills more cheaply or more expensively). A "Buy Skills" button should appear on the left-hand side of the game page, near the other buttons. For more, check out the [[Skills]] and [[Experience Points]] articles. Regarding MDK, I'm almost certain they're still active, but I don't think they check the wiki very often. Hope that helps! {{User:Bob Moncrief/Sig}} 15:05, 15 March 2013 (UTC)
:You don't even technically need to go through A/SD for unused images that are more than 2 weeks old because they are [[A/G#Scheduled_Deletions|scheduled deletions]]. In theory you could just let a sysop know on our talk page or discord and we can do it without red tape. {{User:DanceDanceRevolution/sig5}} 17:49, 5 April 2019 (UTC)
::That works too — I suggested A/SD because that way multiple sops are more likely to see it. If somebody DMs me individually, there's always a chance I won't notice for a day or two. {{User:Bob Moncrief/Sig}} 17:51, 5 April 2019 (UTC)

== Re: Welcome! ==
== Wrong category again ==
Howdy and thanks for the warm welcome Bob! I have high hopes for my participation in Urban Dead and on the Wiki. I do have a few questions though. First, how do I get the nifty content box on my talk page? Second, can users have multiple wiki accounts for multiple characters? Thanks for welcoming me! --[[User:BeatMyAces|BeatMyAces]] 22:08, 14 March 2013 (UTC)
:I know I'm not Bob, but would you by chance be referring to {{tl|Character}} when you're talking about the content box? As for accounts, yes, you can have more than one. That said, the practice is mildly discouraged since it's easy to abuse and has been in the past (e.g. voting multiple times, making it appear that there's a consensus on a topic by agreeing with yourself, creating artificial drama by arguing or edit warring with yourself, etc.). So long as you use your accounts for roleplaying and don't abuse them, I doubt anyone would mind. {{User:Aichon/Signature}} 23:06, 14 March 2013 (UTC)
::Thanks Aichon! I definitely won't be abusing anything, not my style. As for the Character box, that doesn't look like what I was looking for as I tried it on [[The Herd]] talk page. What I am looking for is the table of contents that lists the different topics on a page. I think Bob has it at the very top of this page. --[[User:BeatMyAces|BeatMyAces]] 14:15, 15 March 2013 (UTC)
:::Oh, you mean like the one at the very top of this page? If so, then that will show up automatically once you have more than, I believe, three headers on your page, without you having to do anything else. You can force it to show up on the page prior to that by putting <nowiki>"__TOC__"</nowiki> wherever you want to force it to appear, or you can use {{tl|TOCright}} if you'd like to force it to show up and make it aligned on the right side of the page instead of the left. {{User:Aichon/Signature}} 14:26, 15 March 2013 (UTC)
:::: Awesome! Thanks again Aichon! --[[User:BeatMyAces|BeatMyAces]] 15:24, 15 March 2013 (UTC)

Bob, I'm working on a draft page for the Mad Craskers Godson Arms pub. So I think what I'll do is sort that kind of thing (pub fare) into both categories <nowiki>[[Category:Food]] and [[Category:Pub Images]]</nowiki>.
:Yes, I definitely can! To update the content of a page, simply go to that page, click the "edit" button and change what you'd like. If you want to update a building's DangerReport status, then in the box at the top of a building page, click "update" in the upper left corner, and follow the instructions on the page. For more detailed instructions, you may want to check out [[Guides:Danger Reports Guide]]. And one other note - to sign on a talk page, simply type <nowiki>~~~~</nowiki> or click the [[File:Sign.png]] button at the top of the edit box, which will insert your signature. If you have any other questions, feel free to ask! {{User:Bob Moncrief/Sig}} 15:14, 15 March 2013 (UTC)

Hi Bob! Thank you for the welcome message. Actually, I do have a question:
== Discord ==

During the signup process I first received the captcha question on which organization that had scientific laboratories in the city. Obviously this should be "NecroTech", right? But it wouldn't accept it as an answer, strangely. Do you know why? {{unsigned|Nextor}}
Either you or some other sysop banned me on the discord server. Please cite a rule I broke there that legitimates a ban. You can't, because I didn't break any. Your rules don't have any value, as you simply ban people because you don't like them. :Hi there! Please familiarize yourself with the following from #resources-rules on the server:
{{quote|Bob Moncrief|2. Off-topic discussion, especially discussion that disrupts the use of the server for on-topic purposes, may lead to the following consequences:
* "timeout", in which the server becomes read-only for that user<br/>
* permaban<br/>There is no specific scale of escalations. Users should assume that violations will lead to permaban every time; timeouts and temporary bans are at my discression.<br/>3. Familiarize yourself with the Discord TOS. If you violate it, you're out and your messages will be reported.}}
:Posting recipes for illicit drug manufacturing is illegal in the jurisdiction of the owner of the server (me) and thereby violates Discord's TOS against illegal activity. In addition, what you posted is both off-topic and blatantly disruptive, and therefore violates the above. {{User:Bob Moncrief/Sig}} 17:09, 9 April 2019 (UTC)
::Also I can't believe I misspelled "discretion". I've corrected the error on the server, but I leave my shame here for posterity. {{User:Bob Moncrief/Sig}} 17:11, 9 April 2019 (UTC)
:::I googled that recipe in under 1 minute, dumped it in google translate and posted it on discord. And there are numerous off topic messages on the discord that didn't result in bans which brings me back to my first point "your rules don't have any value, you simply ban people because you don't like them." [[User:WHITE POWDER SKINHEAD|WHITE POWDER SKINHEAD]] ([[User talk:WHITE POWDER SKINHEAD|talk]]) 17:29, 9 April 2019 (UTC)
::::Just because something's widely available doesn't mean it's legal. And different sites and platforms have different policies towards acceptable content.
::::Quite a few people have received warnings (by private message) or temporary timeouts for off-topic posting. I am a capricious discord dictator, yes, and decide upon my own whim when something deserves outright banning. If you have a problem with that, you should have left the server as soon as you joined it. {{User:Bob Moncrief/Sig}} 18:45, 9 April 2019 (UTC)

::::::You're talking to a fascist, man. A neo-nazi. The most notorious one out there. Did you really think I was going to have a problem with dictatorship..? Non-aryan guys are even dumber than they look.
::::::Now that I've established the fact you aren't able to form a semi-comprehensive thought, I think it's useless to elaborate on the contradiction in your stream of thoughts by mentioning that you wouldn't have banned any other Discord member for posting said recipe or any few offline messages whatsoever. I suppose I should probably say something since I've been changing TONS of your edits. I've been updating year+ old stuff to "unknown", with the intention of shortening that down to 10>8>6 months if I ever get caught up.  Still not sure I've caught all the 2018 stuff yet tho (is there a way to search that?) :Unfortunately there's no way to manually search it. Back when the [[MDU]] was active I would check every status and mark it unknown on a five-month cycle, but that meant manually opening every building page in the city — a time-consuming process, as I'm sure you've found out. There used to be a bot run by The Rooster that marked statuses unknown automatically, but he hasn't been active since 2011 (it may be possible to code a new one, but I am not tech-savvy enough). {{User:Bob Moncrief/Sig}} 16:51, 3 February 2020 (UTC)

:::Yeah, maybe something like that is workable. It would be great if the template could default to unknown if the report is past a certain age. A [[Help:Magic Words|magic word]]? We got things like <nowiki>{{REVISIONDAY}}</nowiki> to work with, for example. But we don't have things like if functions / conditionals... so I'm not sure. We'd need parser functions. Perhaps there's a way to sorta "override" the templates semi-manually. '''ROOTPAGENAME''' will defend against any transclusions of UpdateDR in places other than User:DangerReport, as while they will still get categorised, the category will be named differently due to the differing root page name. --[[User:OrangeTHIEF|OrangeTHIEF]] ([[User talk:OrangeTHIEF|talk]]) 12:15, 6 February 2020 (UTC)

:The HGV system is used very infrequently, and as far as I can tell, successful nominations tend to be blowouts (or have been since 2010 or so). The only circumstance I can see a contention occurring is if a group gets 2/3 of the first 15 or so votes and then ends up failing - correct me if I'm misunderstanding. If the situation ever came up, I would consider the consensus on how to interpret the rule which was developed in the discussion you linked above to be somewhat equivalent to precedent, and declare that the rule is clear enough and that, because every other place on the wiki operates on the "closes at the time-limit end of voting/discussion" model (with the exception of [[FA|featured articles]]), HGV should be interpreted as doing so as well.

TBH I'm with ALHG. Sorta disappointing to see Aichon of all the ops asking for him to point to a rule that people know is there and have referenced themselves within the last 24 hours, doing this I assume just to make it hard for him to make a right point. Should be struck. Don't get me wrong, I'm loving the drama too as Harrison is, but fun or righteous, generally drama can actually be worth it if the right result is gained, ie a striking. {{User:DanceDanceRevolution/a}} 15:13, 8 April 2013 (BST)
== Reporting Characters ==
:I wasn't trying to ''make'' it hard for Lpha. Rather, it ''is'' gonna be hard for him, since I'm opposed to using a rule that clearly flies in the face of everything else on the wiki (and especially so when it simply doesn't matter, even more so since you know very well that I prefer to let users work things out among themselves instead of involving sysops in every little squabble). That said, I'm open to being convinced otherwise, and asking him to provide more info is my way of trying to give him a way to convince me, but I'll need more than just the stuff on the Suggestions page rules, since I believe that that rule is in contradiction with everything else that describes the role of sysops. {{User:Aichon/Signature}} 16:05, 8 April 2013 (BST)

In fact, I'm even more shocked after looking at the fallout (more people abusing the rules just to make a mockery of the whole situation). While I do indeed find the situation funny at face value, I can't say I'm a fan of the principle that people are now laughing in the face of a new user who put one foot wrong by a seasoned user, or moreso, that people are laughing at the sysop's team's choice to defend SH and not help out a new user who has the rules on his side. We must be looking pretty fucking swell to the small amount of new users coming in. {{User:DanceDanceRevolution/a}} 15:24, 8 April 2013 (BST)
Hey Bob, a quick question, a survivor just destroyed my generator is there any way to report him? And I have no idea about his whereabouts.
:If I gave you the impression of "laughing in the face of a new user" or of "defend[ing] SH and not help[ing] out a new user," then you are very mistaken in my intentions. My desire in the response above was to make clear the ''de facto'' operations of the wiki, and SH's status as a long-time user had no effect on it. Part of being a new user is not just learning the mechanical operations of the wiki, but its culture, which frequently includes conversations like this one. {{User:Bob Moncrief/Sig}} 16:44, 8 April 2013 (BST)

::I wasn't singling you out, by laughing in faces I was talking about people seeing this situation and responding with making invalid votes themselves to make a joke of this situation that's getting more and more ridiculous. It went from a pretty simple issue to a really embarrassing thing to watch as AHLG said. {{User:DanceDanceRevolution/a}} 22:31, 8 April 2013 (BST)
:Destroying generators isn't against the game rules, hope this helps. --{{User:Dragonshardz/dragonshardz}} {{Goonsig|Dragonshardz}} 06:43, 21 March 2021 (UTC)
One thing I just noticed: There is a contradiction in the rules. "Advice to Voters (5)" says "It is '''strongly recommended''' that voters (especially in the kill/spam sections) justify their vote to help others understand the reason they disagree." However, under "Invalid Votes" it says "Votes that do not have reasoning behind them are invalid. '''You MUST justify your vote.'''" (The relevant rule in the Comments section we are discussing above reads, in part, "'''Note''' is used by System Operators to invalidate trolling-based votes. Only Sysops may remove troll-based votes and they do so with a strikeout <nowiki><s></s></nowiki> in order to preserve the trolling removal for posterity.")
:Also replying further on your talk page. {{User:Bob Moncrief/Sig}} 18:26, 24 March 2021 (UTC)
<br/>Because the lines between trolling, inanity (which is not in the rules), lack of process understanding, lack of justification, and justification are very, very fuzzy, I am personally unlikely to remove a vote like Harrison's that is arguably "justified" by the conversation held on his talk page between him and Lpha. I also don't agree with the "You MUST justify your vote" rule, because that's not how we operate on any other part of the wiki, although I would go with it if there wasn't a contradictory statement just above it. {{User:Bob Moncrief/Sig}} 16:44, 8 April 2013 (BST)
:Nothing new, sadly. Those contradictions have always been there and we've never really been able to make any changes to the rules (suggestions usually divide the community to the point where no change gets made). Sadly, we didn't have the grace of decent writers back then who knew that every little thing would be abused at one point or another, but that doesn't mean we haven't since figured out the way to deal with each part of the rule to minimise abuse like this. There really isn't much fuzziness in this situation IMO, but I wouldn't expect you to take the front seat as a new op, it's the older ones I'm surprised by.
:Anyhoo, I'm out, no point banging on the same logical points where people don't want to listen. Have a nice community, you dickheads, you've earned it. {{User:DanceDanceRevolution/a}} 22:31, 8 April 2013 (BST)

I'm late to the party here, but something DDR said I agree with greatly.  Not to pick on Aichon, since all the sysops tend to do it, but the "you find the rule" thing comes off as a "get lost" (or more likely a "fuck off").  If the sysops can't find the rule; how could normal users?  I'm not saying in situations where the rule legitimately can't be found or the sysop asking a user to explain what part of the rule justifies "x."  But in this case, Aichon was aware of the rule and disagreed with it; so why ask the user to find it?  Just say, I don't think it applied in this case (or ever), tell me why you think it does.  I personally would prefer that sysop striking the vote only be used for personal attacks, obvious trolling (racial/sexual insults), but don't make the user feel like there is something they didn't do when that isn't the case. --[[User:Kirsty_cotton|<span style="color: lightgrey">K</span>]] 22:45, 8 April 2013 (BST)

Really? No sysops are not "not moderators", sysops are whatever is needed to run this resource in the best possible way. That includes cleaning up shit content. Frankly, '''how the fuck dare you''' ban a user for doing something you don't like ''in game'' and then claim you aren't being arbiters of what is and isn't acceptable. you don't get to be moderators some of the time and not others. If you want to ban users without any rules for something you don't like but won't protect new users against abuse when there is a rule in place about you, no offence, but you're a fucking idiot. Big surprise that the people who get screwed in both situations are new users who aren't part of the clique.--{{User:Yonnua Koponen/signature}} 20:23, 9 April 2013 (BST)

&nbsp;&nbsp;1. Sysops are not moderators applies to us not setting tone, directing commentary, and censoring all content. <br />
&nbsp;&nbsp;2. In Suggestions Sysops ARE Moderators by design. <br />
&nbsp;&nbsp;3. Stop reacting like a bunch of halfwit whiny five year olds, THIS is exactly why Sysops are not moderators was codified as policy because we don't want to deal with this stupid arguments over stupid nonsense and all of these stupid overreactions to a Sysop asking for clarity of desired action. <br />

:Having now read through all of this, I have a few comments. 1) I'm sticking by my original position that the "unjustified" and "inane" vote requirements are extremely fuzzy, and it's not clear they apply in this case, so I'm not going to strike Harrison's vote. 2) I do think that Aichon acted incorrectly in asking Lpha to cite a rule, as he was already familiar with the set of rules surrounding Suggestion voting, but that it's not so bad to be worthy of some of the criticism he's gotten. 3) The issue at hand has at this point split in two; the actual vote is an (effectively moot, because of how the vote is going) issue between Harrison and Lpha, while the issue of rules is one which concerns the sysop team & larger wiki community, but is unlikely to have any change occur. 4) I'm still not understanding why exactly people are quitting the wiki, even temporarily, or even why this has blown up as an issue, other than as a venting point for (seemingly unrelated) grievances some have against the sysop team. 5) I've been trying to take this a bit lightheartedly, because I definitely hear Sarah's point that the issue shouldn't be as serious as it's being made out to be. 6) Thanks to Rev for upping {{tl|DramaLevel}}. {{User:Bob Moncrief/Sig}} 16:50, 10 April 2013 (BST)

Mother fuck. This is the precise reason why you bastards need to LIGHTEN THE SHIT RIGHT UP. Suggestions are entirely useless and any votes on them are basically moot regardless--Lpha, if you concern yourself too closely with the system as though it matters, you will only frustrate yourself. The voting system really only matters if it's a landslide one way or another, otherwise there is an omnipotent (and fuck useless) designer who will make his own judgement anyway (if I recall correctly, the last content update featured a rejection suggestion). As for argument about rules and precedents, this is a vidya game website, not a court of law. == Spambot blocks ==

Hey, I was just reviewing the block log, and I noticed that you weren't quite being as thorough as you probably meant to be when you're banning spambots, since you're not autoblocking them or setting up an IP ban at all. The easiest way to do both is to use the links from the {{tl|bot}} template. Just follow the link to block them, leave the checkboxes alone since that link sets them to what you should be using, and block them. For the IP ban, follow the link to check their IP, checkuser each of those IPs to make sure no one else is using them, then paste them one at a time into the form to ban them using the same checkboxes as you used for their username. If you don't get their IP address, they have a tendency to keep coming back under different usernames. {{User:Aichon/Signature}} 04:09, 30 April 2013 (BST)
:Sure! When I block a user via {{tl|bot}}, the boxes that are automatically checked are "Prevent account creation" and "Automatically block the last IP address used by this user, and any subsequent IP addresses they try to edit from". Should I carry out the ban and then checkuser the account, unbanning the IP if it's shared by someone? {{User:Bob Moncrief/Sig}} 05:10, 30 April 2013 (BST)
::My typical pattern is to ban the username using the checkboxes that are checked by default, checkuser the account, and then ban the IP addresses. I've actually never seen the IP addresses in use by another account that wasn't also a spambot account, but if you do, then you'd just not ban that particular IP address for that user, though I'd leave the auto-block in place, since it only actually applies a 24 hour ban, not a permanent one. It's useful for making things harder for them if they try to log into that account again from a different IP address (since it then prevents them from using that IP address with a new account for the next day), but it also means that we need to do separate permanent IP bans, since the auto ban isn't sufficient. {{User:Aichon/Signature}} 14:09, 30 April 2013 (BST)
:::The checkbox only prevents account creation with that IP. It doesn't prevent editing. And it is only temporary. So bots can get around it easily. I was always of the opinion that IP Banning had minimal effect as well but everyone seems to think it helps and there's no real way of knowing for sure. Range blocks and tighter prevention methods are the way to go I've always thought. But. Its not my place to say how it should be handled nowadays. ~[[Image:Vsig.png|link=User:Vapor]] 15:51, 30 April 2013 (UTC)
::::I used to see over five spambots on the same IP address from time to time, so IP blocks can definitely be effective, but range blocks definitely are better, though they must be very carefully applied. Also, if you look at the [http://wiki.urbandead.com/index.php?title=Special%3ALog&type=newusers&user=&page=&year=&month=-1 user creation logs], there's a MASSIVE drop off around March 20th, and I'm not seeing any overly-broad range blocks that were applied around that time, which means it must be something Kevan did or else it's just a drop-off by the spammers. Either way, it's been rather nice. {{User:Aichon/Signature}} 16:56, 30 April 2013 (BST)
:::::Very true. I've definitely noticed the drop-off, and wondered myself if Kevan had done something. {{User:Bob Moncrief/Sig}} 17:46, 30 April 2013 (BST)
:::::Yeah the IPs are used to send bulk spam to multiple wikis using multiple accounts and then discarded. So it would not be uncommon to see multiple bots using the same IP because its the same bot. It may prevent other bots from using it in the future but it isn't even that hard for them to switch IPs and run the program again. There really is no easy solution. It might be different with an active wiki owner but since we don't have one, just carry on what your doing and hope for the best. ~[[Image:Vsig.png|link=User:Vapor]] 20:27, 30 April 2013 (UTC)

Suburb Groups

Hey Bob. I noticed you reverted the changes I made to the group listings in some of the suburbs I frequent due to me not being a member of said groups. How are we supposed to keep that section up to date in light of the fact there hasn't been an accounting of active and inactive groups on the wiki since 2013? Thanks -JAZED (talk) 20:48, 22 January 2019 (UTC)

I would suggest asking said groups on their talk page and if they don't reply in a few weeks, I wouldn't have a problem taking them off. DANCEDANCEREVOLUTION 22:31, 22 January 2019 (UTC)
Hi Jazed!
The longer answer is that the original impetus for the existence of the GSGMs wasn't how out-of-date group listings were, but because the listings on each suburb page were becoming untenably long. That's definitely not the case on the current lists. The goal of having an up-to-date set of listings has always been secondary, but, that being said, we are definitely overdue for another GSGM. Are you interested in helping out? Please leave your signature here and we'll let you know when we get started. if you feel it's a major problem please make sure to get involved, and get those you know involved, in the GSGM. Seeing more volunteers listed there would definitely give the Massacre a kick in the pants. Bob Moncrief EBDW! 22:41, 22 January 2019 (UTC)

Apparently we are at war?

I'm only back to the game since a few weeks, and wasn't aware RR was even active anymore. All but one of my old contacts have their names crossed out. I saw one other member at my old NT building, but it otherwise seemed to be operating on the strength of tradition. Kind of makes sense because honestly what was the point? Well I left out of boredom, and I'm up in Houldenbank tagging along with some folks who like to repair phone masts, and I run into this joker.

MichaeI Jacks0n id=1564806

Half a decade seems an awfully long time to hold a grudge against a mostly inactive group. The Greatorex clinic is powered but barricaded, and I see no indication of anyone trying to bring it back. Their group page hasn't been updated in 4 years. Was this person even a member, or do you think he was just looking to start trouble in the suburb? What the hell are they even using for a PKer database anymore?

. . . einexile (talk) 17:57, 9 February 2019 (UTC)

Wow! Haven't heard of RR=PR being active in ages. That said, I've never run a survivor in the southeast. It's possible Michael is maintaining a personal bounty list — the most recently-active major bounty board was on NecroConnect, which is still up but hasn't been updated in at least a year. Bob Moncrief EBDW! 05:06, 10 February 2019 (UTC)
Thanks for the response and info. I was thinking of going back to the Mad Craskers but not now! . . . einexile (talk) 19:01, 22 February 2019 (UTC)

Grateful

Thank you for the greeting, Mr. Moncrief. There's a lot to learn in Malton and I really appreciate having someone I can ask for a word of advice.

I do have one question: I've noticed some people have a really nice little page set up for their character and I was wondering if there was a link that perhaps had a template for making up such a page. It would be nice if it had instructions or recipes for making those jolly little -?buttons? I don't know the real name- rectangular boxes that have a few words explaining the owner believes in this or that policy or supports a particular group. Do you know the little label-thingees I mean?

Once again, thank you for your kind greeting. Malton can be a bit intimidating!--Catherine Cushing (talk) 04:43, 19 February 2019 (UTC)

My signature is not right

Hi, please excuse a sort of dopey question, but I just noticed that my signature has the word "Talk" in parentheses behind my main character's username. What did I do to make that happen? Other people rarely seem to have that; it's usually just their usernames. I'm not sure how to alter it to plain "Catherine Cushing". Would you happen to have a link about fixing this, or...(should I stop thinking about this)? Thanks for your time.--Catherine Cushing (talk) 10:08, 27 February 2019 (UTC)

I know I'm not Bob, but I'm going to answer anyway :P All generic signatures will have it looking like yours, so it's nothing you've done. You can create an alternate one if you like, which changes the way your signature appears. If you want to do that, and need a hand, we're more than happy to help :) stelar Talk|MCM|EBD|Scourge 11:04, 27 February 2019 (UTC)
Yep! The default appearance is "Username (talk)", where "talk" links to your talk page. On my custom signature, for example, the word "Moncrief" links to my talk page instead. Hi, Bob. Have you heard anything about whether there will be a supply crate drop for us this Easter? I found a crowbar, so I'm all ready to go. It sure would be great if there were. Thank you for your time. Catherine Cushing (talk) 08:42, 22 March 2019 (UTC)

Unless you have some insider info, I doubt it. The last supply crate drops were more than ten years ago, in 2009. Bob Moncrief EBDW! 11:44, 22 March 2019 (UTC)
Can confirm. Sys-ops and even bureaucrats receive no special advance notice of any changes or features to the game. Only very rarely on wiki-related business (the last time in 2014 when a wiki update corrupted text on wiki pages on a large scale), and even then this is generally publicly handled on the wiki. - As there hasn't been a crate drop in 9 years, don't hold your breath for the 10th year being the charm. -- Spiderzed 21:53, 22 March 2019 (UTC)
Well, that sure is disappointing news. Do we still get any Christmas trees and decorations? Or even just snow? Catherine Cushing (talk) 08:43, 23 March 2019 (UTC)
Christmas trees (plastic ones found in malls, real trees cut down in parks), Christmas lights and tinsel are all still available during December. No snow or fog anymore unfortunately. I think masks are also available around Halloween in certain corners of certain malls (or it might be all malls, I'm not sure). stelar Talk|MCM|EBD|Scourge 09:03, 23 March 2019 (UTC)

A gift! Oh my gosh!

Wow, that is exactly what I was trying to describe. All I had been able to find was columns of raw code. This looks to be so organized already, that even I could manage to construct my idea! Thank you, Bob. That is incredibly kind. Catherine Cushing (talk) 23:56, 24 March 2019 (UTC)

It worked like a charm. And I even spelled your name properly this time! Thank you, thank you, thank you! Catherine Cushing (talk) 00:52, 25 March 2019 (UTC)
Great! I had a few minutes between my daily AP-spending and going to work, so I thought I'd whip something together. Looks like you figured out all the parameters (border color, etc) right away. Let me know if there's something else I can help with! Bob Moncrief EBDW! 02:14, 25 March 2019 (UTC)

Don't see where I'm supposed to choose category

Hi, Bob. Sorry to bother you again, but I am confused by labeling the images I upload to the UD site. I feel badly that you always end up finishing up for me. I should know how to do this. I know I'm supposed to designate a category, but I'm not sure of all the possible choices (I mean, is there a set list someplace of the 20 possible designation labels, for example, something really concrete like that?) And besides choosing the best category to sort the image into, I don't understand where I'm supposed to post the label I choose - just in the "Descriptions" box? Sorry to be so thick. Thanks for your time. Catherine Cushing (talk) 19:36, 29 March 2019 (UTC)

Hi Catherine! All the highest-level subcategories can be seen in Category:Images; I generally just file the image into one of those, unless it's of a building/location in which case I try to add it to the relevant category in Category:Location Images.
When you upload a file, you can just type [[Category:ZZZ]] (where "ZZZ" is the relevant category name) in the description box.
That said, don't worry! Almost nobody, including longtime wiki users, successfully add categories to all (or any) images they upload. I think of adding the categories as part of my regular wiki maintenance activities. Bob Moncrief EBDW! 20:21, 29 March 2019 (UTC)
One quick follow-up note: it's important to put the category in [[double brackets]], not just single — otherwise, the category won't link properly. Bob Moncrief EBDW! 02:08, 2 April 2019 (UTC)
Ah, nuts! I should have remembered the double-brackets. Sorry again, Bob. Maybe I'll get it right the next time. Catherine Cushing (talk) 05:52, 2 April 2019 (UTC)

What is the wiki protocol?

Hi, Bob. I am writing about the McMurtrie Building page. http://wiki.urbandead.com/index.php/The_McMurtrie_Building

What is the protocol for updating a common page like this? I haven't been able to find a reference to that procedure in the UD wiki. I'm terrified of doing a technical wiki-vandalism or some other offense out of ignorance.

I would like to correct a piece of inaccurate information. Specifically, in the fifth paragraph: "...with the building currently serving as the Black Ops HQ for the Souless Survivors."

(Appropos of nothing, it drives me nuts that they spelled "soulless" incorrectly.)

Thank you for your time. Catherine Cushing (talk) 00:53, 3 April 2019 (UTC)

Hi Catherine!
For location pages, you're totally welcome to make edits like the above, since they're intended to be updated by the community at large. The places to tread carefully are the group pages themselves — a group is considered to control its own group page, so any edits by outsiders there can be questionable. But location pages, you can edit freely. (The group members may come and undo the update, of course, but that means that they have some other information and may also update their group page to reflect it.)
So the edit you mentioned above should be a-ok! Bob Moncrief EBDW! 00:56, 3 April 2019 (UTC)
Thanks, Bob. (I'd never do anything on somebody else's page. Might try to talk to them, mention whatever the matter was, but I'd never go in and correct their spelling, etc. Maybe they did it that way on purpose; what do I know? Anyway, I have more than enough trouble to try to puzzle out on my own pages.) Catherine Cushing (talk) 02:45, 3 April 2019 (UTC)

Deletion of unused images

Hi, what is the etiquette when nominating an unused image for deletion? I want one gone especially because its gross. --Emot-siren.gif LABIA on the INTERNET Emot-siren.gif Dunell Hills Corpseman The Malton Globetrotters#24 - You rated this wiki '1'! Just post a link to it on A/SD, as long as it's been truly unused for at least two weeks. (Same is true if it's a prior revision of an image in use.) Bob Moncrief EBDW! 11:10, 5 April 2019 (UTC)
You don't even technically need to go through A/SD for unused images that are more than 2 weeks old because they are scheduled deletions. In theory you could just let a sysop know on our talk page or discord and we can do it without red tape. DANCEDANCEREVOLUTION 17:49, 5 April 2019 (UTC)
That works too — I suggested A/SD because that way multiple sops are more likely to see it. If somebody DMs me individually, there's always a chance I won't notice for a day or two. Bob Moncrief EBDW! 17:51, 5 April 2019 (UTC)

Wrong category again

Hi, Bob. I suppose something like a full beer mug should have been placed in "Category: Pub Images", shouldn't it? Catherine Cushing (talk) 08:35, 9 April 2019 (UTC)

I think just "Category:Foods" is fine. But you're always welcome to edit and add more categories! Bob Moncrief EBDW! 10:24, 9 April 2019 (UTC)

Bob, I'm working on a draft page for the Mad Craskers Godson Arms pub. So I think what I'll do is sort that kind of thing (pub fare) into both categories [[Category:Food]] and [[Category:Pub Images]].

Wish I lived in England, then I could go about and take some pictures of my own. No pubs in Oregon, USA. Catherine Cushing (talk) 00:00, 10 April 2019 (UTC)

Sounds good! Btw, feel free to keep replying under the same header, even if another conversation is happening on this page. Each header is more like a thread, so keeping a topic under one header keeps things orderly. Bob Moncrief EBDW! 04:12, 10 April 2019 (UTC)

Discord

Either you or some other sysop banned me on the discord server. Please cite a rule I broke there that legitimates a ban. You can't, because I didn't break any. Your rules don't have any value, as you simply ban people because you don't like them. WHITE POWDER SKINHEAD (talk) 16:44, 9 April 2019 (UTC)

Hi there! Please familiarize yourself with the following from #resources-rules on the server:
Bob Moncrief said:
2. Off-topic discussion, especially discussion that disrupts the use of the server for on-topic purposes, may lead to the following consequences:
  • "timeout", in which the server becomes read-only for that user
  • permaban
    There is no specific scale of escalations. Users should assume that violations will lead to permaban every time; timeouts and temporary bans are at my discression.
    3. Familiarize yourself with the Discord TOS. If you violate it, you're out and your messages will be reported.
Posting recipes for illicit drug manufacturing is illegal in the jurisdiction of the owner of the server (me) and thereby violates Discord's TOS against illegal activity. In addition, what you posted is both off-topic and blatantly disruptive, and therefore violates the above. Bob Moncrief EBDW! 17:09, 9 April 2019 (UTC)
Also I can't believe I misspelled "discretion". I've corrected the error on the server, but I leave my shame here for posterity. Bob Moncrief EBDW! 17:11, 9 April 2019 (UTC)
I googled that recipe in under 1 minute, dumped it in google translate and posted it on discord. And there are numerous off topic messages on the discord that didn't result in bans which brings me back to my first point "your rules don't have any value, you simply ban people because you don't like them." WHITE POWDER SKINHEAD (talk) 17:29, 9 April 2019 (UTC)
Just because something's widely available doesn't mean it's legal. And different sites and platforms have different policies towards acceptable content.
Quite a few people have received warnings (by private message) or temporary timeouts for off-topic posting. I am a capricious discord dictator, yes, and decide upon my own whim when something deserves outright banning. If you have a problem with that, you should have left the server as soon as you joined it. Bob Moncrief EBDW! 18:45, 9 April 2019 (UTC)

You're talking to a fascist, man. A neo-nazi. The most notorious one out there. Did you really think I was going to have a problem with dictatorship..? Non-aryan guys are even dumber than they look.
Now that I've established the fact you aren't able to form a semi-comprehensive thought, I think it's useless to elaborate on the contradiction in your stream of thoughts by mentioning that you wouldn't have banned any other Discord member for posting said recipe or any few offline messages whatsoever. WHITE POWDER SKINHEAD (talk) 02:08, 10 April 2019 (UTC)
"The most notorious one out there"? I think I know what that means.
I take "non-Aryan" as a compliment, since I often get confused for one irl. The Vikings and English, those esteemed Germanic-language peoples, both did horrible things to my ancestors for centuries — I can tell you all about it sometime if you ask.
And for posterity: I'd have banned anybody for posting the aforementioned recipe. I'm capricious, but consistently capricious. Bob Moncrief EBDW! 04:06, 10 April 2019 (UTC)

Hi Auri! The normal requirements to apply for a sysop are listed at the promotions page. One of the listed requirements is having been an editor on the wiki for six months or so; while not a hard and fast requirement, this is generally the amount of time it takes to learn the ropes of the wiki as well as see the admin pages in action. If you have any questions about wiki culture or procedure, let me know! Bob Moncrief EBDW! 02:19, 1 February 2020 (UTC)
Sure thing! Plus, if I do well, you have the majority of making me an admin anyway, seems that I presume you are a bureaucrat. But, for now, I am here to ensure that this wiki is what it should be, a user-made encyclopedia, and not a playground for vandals. With me here as the most awesome editor, this wiki will be reaching a much higher standard. --Auri (Express yourself, be heard!) 02:25, 1 February 2020 (UTC)

Sure thing! Yes, you can always edit your own messages; and on your own talk page, you can freely remove others's messages (but not edit them). Bob Moncrief EBDW! 02:57, 1 February 2020 (UTC)
Bob, I now know which articles I can edit. The ones without the forward slash. Thanks to Stelar! --Auri (Express yourself, be heard!) 03:01, 1 February 2020 (UTC)
Some pages without a forward slash still are best not to edit, e.g. group pages that you don't own. Bob Moncrief EBDW! 03:03, 1 February 2020 (UTC)
Yeah, it would say Group:. --Auri (Express yourself, be heard!) 03:05, 1 February 2020 (UTC)
No, groups don't have a specific prefix. e.g. Malton Taoist Temple is a group but has no prefix. Bob Moncrief EBDW! 03:07, 1 February 2020 (UTC)
Wow, this is harder than I thought! Okay, if I accidentially edit a page you think it is a group, just revert it. If the pages that I edit are not in the group section, then good, leave it be. I don't do this on purpose, you know. I just want to fix grammatical errors. --Auri (Express yourself, be heard!) 03:09, 1 February 2020 (UTC)
Normally you can tell what kind of page something is from the content of the page, or sometimes from the categories listed at the bottom, if that helps. Repeatedly editing group pages that aren't yours can get you in trouble even if it's unintentional, because it would indicate you can't tell what kind of page is a group page. Bob Moncrief EBDW! 03:11, 1 February 2020 (UTC)
Okay, so it will say either, group, user, etc in the categories? --Auri (Express yourself, be heard!) 03:15, 1 February 2020 (UTC)
User pages are always "User:", group pages have the name of the group in the mainspace. So the ones you had edited (the Bob reversed) had the group name before the slash. stelar Talk|MCM|EBD|Scourge 03:17, 1 February 2020 (UTC)

Danger Reports

I suppose I should probably say something since I've been changing TONS of your edits. I've been updating year+ old stuff to "unknown", with the intention of shortening that down to 10>8>6 months if I ever get caught up. Still not sure I've caught all the 2018 stuff yet tho (is there a way to search that?) EthrDemon (talk) 22:02, 1 February 2020 (UTC)

Unfortunately there's no way to manually search it. Back when the MDU was active I would check every status and mark it unknown on a five-month cycle, but that meant manually opening every building page in the city — a time-consuming process, as I'm sure you've found out. There used to be a bot run by The Rooster that marked statuses unknown automatically, but he hasn't been active since 2011 (it may be possible to code a new one, but I am not tech-savvy enough). Bob Moncrief EBDW! 16:51, 3 February 2020 (UTC)
Even a basic template could work, something that allows you to go to say, add {{2020}} to all updates you make in 2020, and then in the future someone can go through all status updates that link to that. Have one for every year etc. DANCEDANCEREVOLUTION 22:28, 4 February 2020 (UTC)
Yeah, maybe something like that is workable. It would be great if the template could default to unknown if the report is past a certain age. A magic word? We got things like {{REVISIONDAY}} to work with, for example. But we don't have things like if functions / conditionals... so I'm not sure. We'd need parser functions. Perhaps there's a way to sorta "override" the templates semi-manually. If it were June, for example, you change something in the danger report template itself so that anything in April (for example) gets marked as unknown. --  AHLGTG THE END IS NIGH! 00:28, 5 February 2020 (UTC)
I just tested it out on my sandbox and I think one can do something like [[Category:LastUpdate/{{REVISIONYEAR}}]] which should categorise the page in the year the last revision was made to it... unfortunately adding that to all the existing pages is going to set the last revision as now, so it would only be useful going forward, unless there is a trick to work around that (maybe through a template they already all transclude?) --OrangeTHIEF (talk) 10:02, 5 February 2020 (UTC)
Putting it in the BuildingStatus template puts all pages that use that template into the categories: the DangerReports, but also the building pages, BICs, etc. Not sure of another template that wouldn't have the same effect. Bob Moncrief EBDW! 15:11, 5 February 2020 (UTC)
Possibly we could use Template:UpdateDR - from a quick look I think that only gets used/transcluded on actual User:DangerReport/x pages (and a few other user pages). If we put [[Category:{{ROOTPAGENAME}}{{REVISIONYEAR}}]] in the UpdateDR template, we end up with categories looking like DangerReport2018, DangerReport2019, DangerReport2020. ROOTPAGENAME will defend against any transclusions of UpdateDR in places other than User:DangerReport, as while they will still get categorised, the category will be named differently due to the differing root page name. --OrangeTHIEF (talk) 12:15, 6 February 2020 (UTC)
I've gone ahead and made this change (with a couple of tweaks). My hope is that the template update should cascade through soon and then we'll have some nice by-year categories. It should be pretty easy to undo my attempt if not! --OrangeTHIEF (talk) 00:16, 9 February 2020 (UTC)
Seems to be working, but only the ones currently being updated are filling in (from my view). Job queue is at 6008, so I assume ~5500 of those are filling in the categories. Bob Moncrief EBDW! 16:08, 9 February 2020 (UTC)
I've used the purge API and worked through the suburbs, all the categories are now populated - so now all the buildings last updated in 2018 are easy to see! Some details on discord if anyone is interested. --OrangeTHIEF (talk) 17:33, 10 February 2020 (UTC)
For reference the categories are linked as following: Category:DangerReport 2011, Category:DangerReport 2014, Category:DangerReport 2018, Category:DangerReport 2019, Category:DangerReport 2020. It's cool how some haven't been updated in 9 years. DANCEDANCEREVOLUTION 22:27, 10 February 2020 (UTC)
I feel like from a practicality point of view, it would be best to consider this as a feature that will only work from here on. Don't worry about past statuses. Too much effort and probably impossible. DANCEDANCEREVOLUTION 01:00, 6 February 2020 (UTC)

Hmm! It looks like the DEMpos refers to Template:DEMpos. On that page you can replace any given listing, and it should update on Department of Emergency Management/Contact (and anywhere else DEMpos is used). Hope that helps! Bob Moncrief EBDW! 01:21, 11 April 2020 (UTC)

Happy to be here!

Hey Bob!

Thanks for the welcome; really nice of you to say hi :) Project Welcome itself seems like an awesome imitative.

I've played on and off throughout the years, and got back into UD recently with some new characters. Originally, I was providing intel to a group on TRP statuses and such, but realised I could help more than just them with that info. Hopefully the updates are up to scratch!

If there's anything else newb-friendly I can help with on the wiki, feel free to point me towards it. Otherwise, I'll content myself with DangerReport updates for now.

See you around!
