Common Mistakes in Location Pages
Just thought I'd bring these types of things up here (so that others can learn too, rather than it being lost in individual talk pages).
Nondescript Buildings
Probably the most common mistake on location pages is, when linking to warehouses, factories and cemeteries in the 9 block templates, to either link to A warehouse or A warehouse 39,52. The LSG calls for these buildings, who all have the same names on the suburb maps, to be named as Buildingtype xx,yy, or Warehouse 39,52 -- boxy T L ZS Nuts2U DA 06:27, 19 January 2007 (UTC)
Baruch
Hold up there big guy. What's with all the redirects? Please have a look at the location style guide for what location pages to make, and what should be on them. There is no need for redirects from pages entitled Suburbname Factory. Feel free to ask me on my talk page, or here, if you have any queries about the locations project -- boxy T L ZS Nuts2U DA 07:57, 20 January 2007 (UTC) (Moved from Baruch's talk page -- boxy T L ZS Nuts2U DA 06:59, 22 January 2007 (UTC)
- In the factory page it is helpful to know which suburb the factory is in. Just giving the coordinates is inadequate. Why do you have the right to undo all the work I did? I think you should put back the pages I created and let others express their opinions as to the usefulness of knowing the suburb. Furthermore, do you care if people work on the wiki? Why wouldn't you talk to me before destroying what I did? All you do is make me uninterested in participating - is that your goal? Baruch
- Hi Baruch, the LSG has been discussed for a long time, in fact most of it was set before my time, so there has been a long, long process of others expressing their opinions. You were, in many cases, redoing what has already been done. You made a redirect to one factory in Mockridge Heights with your page Mockridge Heights Factory, when there is already a page for the only factory in Mockridge Height, Factory 43,69, clearly stating that it is in Mockridge Heights, and a redirect from the place that the grouped location page would be, if there was more than one, Mockridge Heights Factories. It is very unlikely that anyone would search for, or link to, Mockridge Heights Factory (let alone Santlerville Factory Two, or whatever). By undoing what you had already done, I am hoping to put you on the right track to creating pages that are more useful, and in a way that conforms to how they are being done by everyone else working on the project. I hope it doesn't put you off, I hope it encourages you to have a go. But if you feel we are doing it wrong, then please try and convince enough people of it, before changing the way it's done -- boxy T L ZS Nuts2U DA 06:56, 22 January 2007 (UTC)
- Thanks for lengthy reply. I go to the factories page and the auto repair shops page and look for a page named with the suburb - otherwise I'd click thru every page named factory x,x looking for one in Mockridge Height. If I go to the Mockridge Heights page the auto repair and factories are not listed prominently as tactical resource points - though they clearly are. I'd have to visually search through the map, same as searching through the suburb map on the map page. What about adding them with the hospitals, PDs etc? thanks again, Baruch
- Well the locations page project is very much a work in progress at the moment, there's a lot of suburbs that still need their pages fixed up. But your best bet at finding a factory near where you are is to look at the bottom of the suburb page, at the map. Ultimately you will be able to just go to the Suburbname Factories page (ie Tollyton Factories) and either have a list of all the factories in the suburb, or be redirected to the individual page if there is only one. As to them being resource points, I don't think they are as high value as the hospitals, NT's and PD's. But that's a suburb page issue I guess, I haven't had much to do with their organisation -- boxy T L ZS Nuts2U DA 23:40, 22 January 2007 (UTC)
- Oh, BTW, if you place ~~~~ at the end of your posts, the wiki will sign, and datestamp it for you. I'll leave a template on your talk page explaining some things you may like to read up about -- boxy T L ZS Nuts2U DA 23:43, 22 January 2007 (UTC)
- Boxy - this is what I did!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
- "or be redirected to the individual page if there is only one"
- I made redirects to the factory page for those suburbs that only have one!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
- And named the redirect i.e. Peddlesden Village Factory —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Baruch (talk • contribs) at an unknown time.
- Yes, but no one will go looking for Peddlesden Village Factory, if you're looking for a building type in a suburb, you look for the page Suburbname Factories, in the plural (because usually there is more than one). And you also did it in suburbs that had more than one, Dulston Factory Three for example. It's just easier to make all the factories pages plural, that way you don't have to look up how many factories are in the suburb, just go to Suburbname Factories page and find them all, or if there's only one, get redirected to it -- boxy T L ZS Nuts2U DA 00:40, 25 January 2007 (UTC)

Quarlesbank Museums
Hey, I'm kinda new to the wiki and all, so can somebody tell me if I've done the Quarlesbank Museums page right??--Jason Muir 04:18, 28 February 2007 (UTC)
- It looks very good, just a couple of minor things. There's a couple of nondescript buildings links that are named wrong, have a look up the page at Nondescript Buildings. Also there isn't a need to put {{GrpLoc|Stubs/Locations}} because that category is automatically added when you have the {{locations-stub}} template on the page -- boxy T L ZS Nuts2U DA 10:13, 28 February 2007 (UTC)
Category Locations
I've been taking the Category:Locations tags off most of the locations pages I see it on, because if every location in Malton is listed there, it's not of much use to anyone (it'll be soooo bloody big). I used to put it on myself, but noticed that Novelty was taking them off again... and checked it out myself, and he has a point. What do others think? I figure it should be restricted to "important" locations -- boxy T L ZS Nuts2U DA 10:29, 28 February 2007 (UTC)
Street Location Pages
Hi, I would really like to ask permission to convert any links to streets back to just a normal name - for my suburb (Santlerville), so that no wiki page is associated with a street (not even grouped location pages).
The way I see it is that a lot of a suburb is made of streets and unless they are revive points, there doesn't seem to be any point to having a wiki page dedicated to a street (no Tactical resources, nothing to find, unable to barricade, no history etc..). I mean, it is just a street...right..?
Getting rid of the links means less "pages that need to be made" for you, less profusion of links on the suburb map and an easier user experience, since they only need to look at the pages for the actual important buildings, instead of having the choice of streets too.
I'd like to try this on Santlerville unless you see any strong reason against this? I am overhauling Santerville's building wiki pages to see if it has an effect on survivor interest in the burb (hopefully will go up).
Please let me know what you think.--Sunil 00:05, 15 April 2007 (BST)
- Hey Sunil. Typically, unless a street has a particular significance, every street in a suburb can be grouped into one page. It's not finished, but take a look at Dunell Hills Streets or Mockridge Heights Streets for how it might work. -- Atticus Rex mfu pif Δ 21:09, 15 April 2007 (BST)
- Please don't Sunil. When a suburb is completed, you should be able to navigate it through the 9 block template alone. If the streets arn't linkified, you hit dead ends -- boxy T L ZS Nuts2U DA 11:29, 16 April 2007 (BST)
- Objection noted. Plan ceased.--Sunil 15:31, 19 April 2007 (BST)
Status Update
The location wikipage machine that is Mobius187 rolls onwards. For those who are not aware the NE Corner is my primary target with the suburbs of Dulston, Pescodside, Rhodenbank, and Rolt Heights having been completed to date. I also assisted several survivor groups in that area redesign the group wikipage too, as I felt they were a part of the whole package. My most recent efforts have been working with another user to create Malton Rail and recently to start on Dunningwood location wikipages (i.e. streets right now). I have also been toying around with creating a group whose sole purpose would be to advertise events in Northeast Malton. I would be curious to see if its possible to create a group in UD entirely from the wiki. Probably not, but it might be a worthwhile endeavor to test. :) --Mobius187 May 14 2007, 5:41 PM (EST)

- Thanks Hagnat, hope you don't mind if I modify it a little to make it easier to use, and point to a different category. There's already a lot that point to Category:Pages Needing Location Block, which I figure would suit this template too -- boxy T Nuts2U DA 13:57, 3 July 2007 (BST)
- Of course. This template is just a raw sketch. Go for it. --People's Commissar Hagnat [cloned] [mod] 14:47, 3 July 2007 (BST)
LocationblockIW
{{LocationblockIW}}
This is a minor update to the Locationblock template that puts a link the very bottom of the location block. The link leads to a page that shows all relvant Iwitness records for that location and neighboring locations that can see that location on the minimap and hence would know if it was powered, had zombies outside, and so on. I don't have a version yet for multi-block locations, but I think one could likely be done.
I'll leave it up to others to decide if this should be the new official location block template. . . . swiers 19:47, 28 July 2007 (BST)
- not sure how it looks in your browser, but in mine it's messing in the top instead of the bottom... --Duke GarlandTLCD SSZ 20:49, 28 July 2007 (BST)
- It is supposed to look like this. One posability is that different skins might render things differently. Which is a bitch, because the code alteration I did is suber low level, and should not have any format effect. The format difficulty likely comes not from what I did, but from the formating above it not actually forcing following text down the page as it should. . . . swiers 21:28, 28 July 2007 (BST)
If you think we're going to go back and replace every location block template with your new one now, your dreaming mate! I suppose we could put it into the original locationblock template. Personally I'm not too keen to place an ad for a personal (if extremely useful) site on every single location page on the wiki though. But if the community wants it, will deal with it :) -- boxy T Nuts block it! DA 09:41, 29 July 2007 (BST)
- I was probably a bit grumply yesterday. Yeah, I reckon you should go ahead and put it on the current locationblock template (to save changing them all). Let me know when you get it all sorted out, and I'll replace the original with your IW one. That's the only change you've made isn't it? The preceding signed comment was added by boxy (talk • contribs) at 08:01 Monday July 2007 (BST)
- Its intended as a "there if you want it" type thing for locations where the link could be helpful- revive points, for example, or places under siege. 90% of locations in the game would never need it.
To "replace" one template with the other, all you need to do is tack "IW" into the template name. Its a 3 second edit on pages where you want it. __Swiers___ 08:57, 30 July 2007 (BST)- Replacing every page for a "3 second edit" is over 2 hours of work (at least double if you actualy include load times). I don't think anyone would be willing to put the effort into adding it to select pages, because after all it's a huge list to sort through the locations and decide if the template should be changed. If we have it for one location then we might as well have it for all. Consistancy is nice, and so as of such we should have it one way or the other, not both. - If Jedaz = 09:10, 30 July 2007 (BST) then pi = 3
- Well perhaps it should be put onto the bottom of the building info templates for those types of buildings where it may be helpful (resource points)? The preceding signed comment was added by boxy (talk • contribs) at 09:31 Monday July 2007 (BST)

- How does it handle a space between the coordinates in the locationblock when creating the link? I've noticed that some pages are in the format 34,43, while others are 34, 43 The preceding signed comment was added by boxy (talk • contribs) at 09:41 Monday July 2007 (BST)
- It should't make any of difference or cause any problems. The search form accepts any string of crap and just picks out the first three numbers, treating #1 as X, #2 as Y, and #3 as a radius. So as long as the template co-ordinates contain 2 numbers, it will work (the link adds 2 as the radius, to give the view from neighboring blocks. So it would ALSO accept 34-43 and 34 - 43 and 34 43 and 34 by 43 and... you get the idea. (Yeah, I know - it treats a radius of 1 as being only the location itself. Not my code.) __Swiers___ 15:11, 30 July 2007 (BST)
More fun than Expected
Woot, i made my first (3) locations. I was walking past Hacker Way in Eastonwood, and decided the cool name might have a cool page- but it had NO PAGE!!! OH NO!! Location blocker to the rescue! And 15 minuted later, Hacker Way had a page, as did two otherwise bland buildings nearby that now are known to be "technology centers". Woot! ΔΔΔ Swiers 04:49, 31 July 2007 (BST)

Club Vagg - make it PINK!!!
The page for Club Vagg didn't have a location block, and seemed massively out of date, with many of the mentioned group's pages no longer (if ever) existing. So I had Imagine "take over" the management of this club. In an attempt to return the club to its "roots" as "Maltons Best Lesbian Nighclub" (Malton Outsider, 2002-2005), the new management is touching up the original "Deep Pink" color scheme. Please help us set EVERY table on this page so that the table background is "DeepPink". ΔΔΔ Swiers 16:24, 31 July 2007 (BST)

Pullin Square
While we're on the subject of individualised location pages, and tricky coding... does anyone know how to do that fancy coding where you can put multiple links onto an image? I've been resisting blocking Pullin Square for ages. Turning their "turkish delight" 9 block image into a clickable 9 block image would be cool The preceding signed comment was added by boxy (talk • contribs) at 06:59 1 August 2007 (BST)
- I did the best I could with it, but because the wiki software doesn't like people img tags I couldn't make an image map with it. It'll probably be easier if we just had it in conjuction to the standard 9-block, but eh. - If Jedaz = 07:37, 1 August 2007 (BST) then pi = 3

De-grouping location blocks
When taking locations off grouped pages, and onto their own individual pages, the locationblock template needs to be slightly modified. You need to take the "merge" out of the top line of the template, and ensure that there is a line with the type in it:
- location_type=Street|
This ensures that each block has the information about what can be found or done in that building/block on the page -- boxy talk • teh rulz 23:37 22 December 2008 (BST)
