20100814 'Search X Times' Dropdown Box

Hyper Anthony 05:53, 14 August 2010 (BST)

Suggestion type
Game Mechanic/Efficiency

Suggestion scope
Search Interface/Server Load

Suggestion description
The search feature in-game presently requires a page hit for each search, which seems wasteful. A 'Search the area (1-MAX CURRENT AP) times' box would be much more efficient, allowing a player to search the area a number of times in one go -- with 1 being the default and their maximum current AP being the top limit. After entering the value and searching, a single page load would describe how many of which items the player recovered, and also if they discarded any as useless or were otherwise over-encumbered.

Searching is something of a unique feature because it has minimum real-time value as compared to active combat actions against players or barricades, and is really the only in game function that is commonly used repeatedly. I don't ever recall being in a situation where a couple of minutes gained by not having to reload the page 30 times while searching would have turned the tide for me in an in-game situation.

Encumbrance mechanics would remain the same, and if a player reached 100% encumbrance any items they continually picked up would be discarded (as they presently are in-game). If this were implemented I would expect that it would place some ease on the server and allow players with alts more IP hits every day.

Keep Votes

  1. Keep - I am the author of this suggestion and find it to be very handy. --Hyper Anthony 05:57, 14 August 2010 (BST)
  2. Keep - I said I'd support this on DS, I like it, it makes sense, it's convenient, and I don't really want to think about it beyond that- If it makes IP hits imba just add 1 for each individual search, etc. I think this suggestion is "unlike UD" and its style of design, but that's mainly the reason I left it in 2009 for other text based zombie games *coughpandemic* which actually have functions like this. -- 06:31, 14 August 2010 (BST)
  3. Keep - As above. --Dawkins DAWKINS IS WATCHIN' [T][P!][W!][] is currently: having his arm torn off by a zombie. 12:27, 14 August 2010 (BST)
  4. Keep/Change - Limited functionality please. Maximum of five at a time.--User:Yonnua Koponen/signature2 19:58, 14 August 2010 (BST)
  5. Keep/Change as Yonnua - having a button with "Search" and another with "Search (x5)" sounds good for me. -- Spiderzed 22:42, 14 August 2010 (BST)
  6. Weak Keep/Strong Change - Just put a simple "x5" button after the search button. --VVV RPMBG 02:35, 19 August 2010 (BST)
  7. Keep - Even though it would probably help zergers, counting an IP hit for each search would mostly negate that. I think this would be extremely useful, at least if you don't want to spam the search button till you find something useful. Just a x5 option would make searching incredibly easy compared to the current system. --IEsa 16:42, 19 August 2010 (BST)
  8. Keep! Moo-Hoo! As above. I hate the current system.-- Jerrel tlk (82nd!) (Project Unwelcome!). 03:09, 20 August 2010 (BST)
  9. Keep Great idea.--User:Purple greg thims/signature. 11.05, 20 august 2010 (BST)
  10. Keep I like it!--E Gadus 17:25, 20 August 2010 (BST)

Kill Votes

  1. Kill - Given how URL rejiggering has, in the past, allowed for all sorts of nonsense, I'm not convinced this couldn't be used to search a massive number of times beyond current AP - show me a non-numerical way to do it up to 50 times and I could get on board. When I fall, I'll weep for happiness 19:06, 14 August 2010 (BST)
  2. Kill - As Mis, plus I'm not keen on the zerging implications of condensing searching to a simple drop-down menu. --Maverick Talk - OBR Praise Knowledge! 404 20:50, 14 August 2010 (BST)
  3. Kill - As Maverick. Let the zergers spend extra time and IP hits. For roughly the same effort it currently takes a zerger to log into 2 accounts and search 50 times, they could now log into 100 accounts and search 50 times on each account. This would be a deadly, deadly weapon in the hands of a zerger with hundreds of accounts and no IP limit, they could stock up on ammo etc cheaply and then go on a crazy rampage with their army.--GANG Giles Sednik CAPD 14:06, 16 August 2010 (BST)
  4. Kill its not that I don't like it, but I think it will open the door to 100 of suggestions about speed attacks, speed barricading, speed healing and the like. --RosslessnessWant a Location Image? 14:24, 16 August 2010 (BST)
  5. As other Kill votes. ᚱᛁᚹᛖᚾ 05:30, 18 August 2010 (BST)
Kill Disagree about it not interfering with real-time combat. It's not unusual to search for & use FAKs in real time during a mall siege. --your anal slut wife 12:10, 20 August 2010 (BST) Unsigned vote struck. --•▬ ▬••▬ • •••• •▬ ▬•▬• ▬•▬ #nerftemplatedsigs 00:20, 21 August 2010 (BST)
  6. So...You're pretty much suggesting more IP Hits to use if you're a survivor. This doesn't benefit zombies, just survivors, and in sieges, IP Hits are a big factor in the daily "break-in/cade" of sieges. --•▬ ▬••▬ • •••• •▬ ▬•▬• ▬•▬ #nerftemplatedsigs 00:18, 21 August 2010 (BST)
  7. Kill-As above. Shadok T Balance is power 06:52, 22 August 2010 (BST)
  8. Kill - As above. --AORDMOPRI ! T 15:55, 23 August 2010 (BST)
