20080806 Throwing Items

Blake Firedancer T E RNL? P.I.S.I.T. 22:38, 6 August 2008 (BST)

Suggestion type
Improvement, In-genre flavour action.

Suggestion scope
Anyone with arms and junk they don't want to keep.

Suggestion description
Why drop when you can throw?

With this adjustment, anyone can throw the useless junk they've accumulated over their UD life/lives at anyone/anything of their choosing!

You now get the option to 'Throw' items. It would appear beside 'Drop', but would have 2 drop-down boxes. The first drop-down would indicate an item to throw, the second to indicate a target to throw at.

A thrown item's accuracy and damage depends on its encumberance level. Damage dealt is its encumberance divided by 5 and rounded to the nearest number, except for knives which will do 2 damage upon throwing and axes which do 3.

Your accuracy is at a base level of 20% for items below 10% encumberance, 15% for those between 10% and 19% encumberance inclusive, and 5% for items at or above 20% encumberance. Any skill that increases your punch/claw attack accuracy (Hand-to-Hand Combat, Vigour Mortis etc.) also increases your throw accuracy. (but, only if you're a valid skill user, for instance Vigour Mortis won't help survivors to throw items)

New to this version of Throw, if you do not have any valid throwable items on you (say, if you started out as a zombie, or have already thrown all your items), you can pick up decorative items and throw 'em. Who knows, perhaps that glass statue you put up in the food court might just save you from a zombie. Or, the zombie might not like your taste in art and try to toss it at you. Tossing a decorative item will give a zombie XP just as if they had ripped it apart themselves, with the extra XP added for a successful attack and possible kill as usual.

Throwing a decorative item already placed in a room requires 2 AP. 1 to pick up, another to throw. All decorative items in the room would appear in your 'items to throw' drop-down menu, except they would indicate the extra AP you would need to spend to throw them, by having the item listed in italics. Both AP would be spent simultaneously, without the need for extra input.

Before people start complaining that this would be too hard to do server-wise, I would like to point out that since an item's encumberance never changes, the calculations for accuracy and damage can be done when first adding the item, and only need to be referenced when making the attack.

Dupe addressing

Before you lot go pulling dupes out the wazoo, I thought I'd address them, explaining how my suggestion differs.

  • Dupe #1, Dupe #2 and Dupe #3: Values for accuracy and damage are not dependant on encumberance, plus the addition of zombie-capable throwing in this version differs enough so that this is not a dupe.
  • Dupe #4: Uh, someone else deleted this one, so I don't know if it was a dupe or not.

Keep Votes

  1. Author Keep - My suggestion. --Blake Firedancer T E RNL? P.I.S.I.T. 22:43, 6 August 2008 (BST)
  2. Keep - Eh, I'd rather just drop the item and keep the AP, but I can see that there are times when someone may want to use this, so I'll vote Keep. --JaredTalk Aces C-Kids 22:49, 6 August 2008 (BST)
Re: I'm going to change my vote to Keep/Change, since Funt brings up a good point about throwing light items. You should make it so that only heavier objects such as toolboxes, et cetera, can be thrown. --JaredTalk Aces C-Kids 23:20, 6 August 2008 (BST)
  3. Keep - Because it adds some nice flavour. As long as there are appropriate damage levels for different items -- Necrodeus T M! 23:25, 6 August 2008 (BST)
  4. Keep - yeah /me wanna throw things -- --Zapp 10:36, 7 August 2008 (BST)--Zapp 10:36, 7 August 2008 (BST)
  5. Keep Not a bad suggestion; obviously, these aren't combat weapons, but it's nice for a bit of flavor to throw stuff and break someone's head and watch them bleed and teabag them and then go home and cry because you have no life...uhhh, ignore the last part. So where was I? Oh, yes, KEEP. Ioncannon11 20:12, 7 August 2008 (BST)
  6. Keep - A bit better than previous "throw item" suggestions, and I find the idea of zambahs with no taste in art throwing glass chandeliers and whatnot. (As a side note, is Ioncannon's vote legal...?) --Private Mark 21:13, 7 August 2008 (BST)
  7. Keep - This is Solid Meat. Great job, keep up the good work bro.--Zombie Lord 22:05, 9 August 2008 (BST)
  8. Keep - Lulz thrown weapons. --BoboTalkClown 00:27, 11 August 2008 (BST)
  9. Keep So long as you can have a flame thower too. they rock.--Airborne88Zzz1.JPGT|Z.Quiz|PSS 20:11, 14 August 2008 (BST)
  10. Keep More good suggestions ! I would love throwing my extra empty pistols at someone!--Piskus99 00:43, 17 August 2008 (BST)
  11. Keep -We need more stuff like this in the game.--Jamie Cantwel3 TalkAll glory to the Hypnotoad! 18:01, 17 August 2008 (BST)
KEEP This is the survivor buff that has been needed since the the barricade block! For survivors this is a must. Zombies, as much as we love them, are becoming overpowered.Chaplain Drakon Macar 00:30, 21 August 2008 (BST) Late vote struck. --Midianian|T|T:S|C:RCS| 13:01, 21 August 2008 (BST)
Keep - and decorative items are the first thing I'm throwing! Useless, spammy, junk that it is -- boxy talki 12:45 21 August 2008 (BST) Late vote struck. --Midianian|T|T:S|C:RCS| 13:01, 21 August 2008 (BST)

Kill Votes

  1. I like the idea, but it would be NICE if you responded to my comments on the talk page before you put it up to vote.--Pesatyel 02:50, 7 August 2008 (BST)
  2. Certain users ignore people's comments in Talk: Suggestions. Anyway, I kinda like the idea, but the mechanics are just all round off base. --WanYao 02:59, 7 August 2008 (BST)
  3. KIll - Zombies should not be able to throw things, as throwing an object requires thought. -- Galaxy125 04:51, 7 August 2008 (BST)
  4. Kill - I didn't like this on the talk page, and making it official does nothing to change my mind. - Tylerisfat 05:12, 7 August 2008 (BST)
  5. Kill - I could see how it could provide a funny situation or two, but it alters gameplay too severely for me to just vote keep on those merits alone. Techercizer (Food) (TSoE) 05:25, 7 August 2008 (BST)
    Alters gameplay? How? --Blake Firedancer T E RNL? P.I.S.I.T. 08:35, 7 August 2008 (BST)
  6. Kill/Change - V3, make the Zambahs need MOL to throw and make it so in a purely survivor occupied building you can't do it and you've got yourself a keep from me! Medico 09:13, 7 August 2008 (BST)
  7. Kill/Change As above. Make it doable with MOL. --Rorybob 09:28, 7 August 2008 (BST)
    Sounds reasonable. Sure! --Blake Firedancer T E RNL? P.I.S.I.T. 10:31, 7 August 2008 (BST)
  8. Chill - zombies should be able to do it. And right off the slab, too - no MOL prerequisite. And Medico, what possible reason could you think of for not having the option in buildings with just survivors in? Don't be daft. If this gets implemented, I'm organising a large scale rez needle fight in Giddings, in order to test my theory that a trenchie wouldn't know a syringe if it hit him in the face. --Sir Bob Fortune RR 18:21, 7 August 2008 (BST)
They can already do it without MOL in this version, it's just that they suggested that I contemplate the prerequisite for the next version. --Blake Firedancer T E RNL? P.I.S.I.T. 11:18, 10 August 2008 (BST)
Re Sir Bob Fortune - What possible reason? It'd lower PK chances as a result of it, and it would also stop the destruction of decoration that people actually waste AP to find. --• LtZurSee slapped your nose with a newspaper for a heal from CORAM (0 seconds ago)AU 16:01, 14 August 2008 (BST) Non-author reply struck. --Midianian|T|T:S|C:RCS| 16:07, 14 August 2008 (BST)
  9. Kill - Zzzz. Adds absolutely nothing to the game.--Jiangyingzi 23:14, 7 August 2008 (BST)
  10. Kill/Change – I like it in principle, but would change several things. First, clarify that damage is rounded down, resulting in 0 damage for light items. Second, zombies should require MoL. Third, as zombies cannot destroy decorations when survivors are present, they should not be able to throw them. ᚱᛁᚹᛖᚾ 11:14, 8 August 2008 (BST)
Sure thing. I'll prepare a list of items, encumberance ratings and resultant throw statistics for next time, if it doesn't go through this time. --Blake Firedancer T E RNL? P.I.S.I.T. 11:22, 10 August 2008 (BST)
  11. KILL I want to throw this suggestion some where. --The Malton Globetrotters #99 DCC SNACK STRONG 08:50, 11 August 2008 (BST)
  12. KILL --Johnny Fate 04:29, 14 August 2008 (BST) Because it's just a stupid idea.

Spam/Dupe Votes

  1. Dupe [multiple], as given by the author, particularly of Throw Item. The small (minor detail) differences of this suggestion don't address the reason the linked to suggestion was garnering so many Kill votes (e.g. why would boinking someone on the head with a shotgun shell wound them?), so for that reason, I see no problem in Duping this, and my vote otherwise would be either Spam or Kill/Incomplete. (Saying it's not a Dupe, and then listing them, isn't the same as it actually not being a Dupe.) --Funt Solo QT Scotland flag.JPG 23:14, 6 August 2008 (BST)
As shotgun shells have 2% encumberance, they would deal 0 damage when thrown. --Blake Firedancer T E RNL? P.I.S.I.T. 02:13, 7 August 2008 (BST)
Oh, so your arithmetic was to round up or down: I wasn't sure about that. A table/list showing the resultant damage of all items would assist in my making a further decision on this suggestion. Without that open comparison being available, I'm sticking with Dupe (as there's no obvious evidence of key differences without it). --Funt Solo QT Scotland flag.JPG 03:27, 7 August 2008 (BST)
    Zombies being allowed to throw items as well is new. --Blake Firedancer T E RNL? P.I.S.I.T. 08:40, 7 August 2008 (BST) One RE per vote. --•▬ ▬••▬ • •••• •▬ ▬•▬• ▬•▬ #nerftemplatedsigs 14:06, 13 August 2008 (BST)
