Suggestion description
"Gun Kata" is essentially a movie martial-art / skill / whatever that allows a character to dodge bullets. It's entirely unrealistic, but it's fueled by the Rule of Cool, so that's all right.

Of course, since this is a game we're talking about, giving anyone the ability to dodge 100% of the bullets 100% of the time would be rather unbalancing. Therefore, this skill suggestion would operate as follows:

  1. The skill would only be availiable to characters of at least lvl 10 (like Headshot).
  2. The skill would only affect pistols and shotguns; flare guns would be right out, since getting hit with a flare would cause major burnination. (And besides, who actually uses flares any more?)
  3. The skill would only affect survivor vs. survivor combat; zombies would be unable to take advantage of this skill.
  4. The chance of successfully "converting" a hit would only be 6.25% (I was originally going for 10%, but decided that was too high.)
  5. A "conversion" would not totally dodge the hit, but instead reduce the damage to 1 HP damage for pistols / 2 HP for shotguns. (The presence or absence of a Flak Jacket would not affect this.) This could be justified as the shot being turned into a "glancing wound" (for pistols) or the victim twisting out of the way of the pellets' center of dispersal (for shotguns). It would still be technically be possible to kill a dodging opponent with such a wound if their HP was low enough.

And now, to answer the naysayers:

"This skill would nerf survivors against zombies!" - No, read it again; I specifically mentioned that it only affects survivor vs. survivor. I really shouldn't have to include this at all, but there are some idiots out there who apparently need to read something two or three times before it finally sinks in...

"This skill would nerf my PKer!" - That's a matter of perspective. For one thing, the skill would only be open to a limited range of characters; there would still be plenty of nice, fresh, Gun Kata-less targets out there for you to shoot. Second, there's nothing preventing you from buying the skill and pulling the same trick on those bounty hunters who are inevitably going to come calling.

"This skill is unrealistic!" - I fully acknowledge that this skill is completely unrealistic, but I chose to suggest it for its cinematic value. Besides, if you want to play something that's completely realistic, you're playing the wrong game; go back to Second Life and whine. Better yet, stop playing online games entirely and go back to real life; after all, you can't beat that for realism...

Keep Votes

  1. Author vote --Specialist290 04:20, 4 June 2008 (BST)
  2. Keep - Knee-jerk reaction was to consider this humorous and to vote as such but, the more I read it and ignore the humor involved the more I think that this isn't a half bad idea, nothing wrong with lowering hit rates of guns, it's not much and actually leads to more play diversity for survivor on survivor violence, it actually encourages playing zombie to kill survivors instead of what the game has seemed to have done for the last x years with encouraging pking by making it better than zombie vs survivor.--Karekmaps?! 04:21, 4 June 2008 (BST)
  3. Keep - In Karek we trust. --Aeon17x 04:24, 4 June 2008 (BST)
  4. Keep - I have no idea why I didn't spam this. --FXI 04:51, 4 June 2008 (BST)
  5. Keep - Karek votes keep? O_o Then it must be good. -- Cheese 10:52, 4 June 2008 (BST)
  6. Keep - Not so bad - it is a fictional universe after all, though I have something against genre-mashing. ~AriedartinTalkA KS J abt all 11:24, 4 June 2008 (BST)
  7. Change - This should be reworked as an ability to simply take effective cover against gunfire. That way it can keep its mechanics while remaining in genre. Call it "Take Cover" or "Experienced Gunfighter" or something.--Jiangyingzi 18:14, 4 June 2008 (BST)
    Duly noted. --Specialist290 18:43, 4 June 2008 (BST)

Kill Votes

  1. Kill - Just doesn't work. And flares are gonna be used abit more since they now do 30 damage to people with fuel soaked clothing--Dragon fang 07:19, 4 June 2008 (BST)
They do? When did that happen? Oh well, duly noted. --Specialist290 18:42, 4 June 2008 (BST)
  2. Kill - What? --The Malton Globetrotters#19 - DrPain TMG 08:29, 4 June 2008 (BST)
  3. kill - dodge bullets i did not even bother to read past these words. --Scotw 09:15, 4 June 2008 (BST)
Then go back and read the thing. It's people like you who ruin the Suggestions section anyway. And learn how to capitalize and use the correct pronunciation, too, while you're at it. Yeesh... --Specialist290 18:42, 4 June 2008 (BST)
  4. Kill - Hurts new players, as it encourages PKers to target them. --Explodey 09:28, 4 June 2008 (BST)
  5. Kill - Fix the flavour so it's in-keeping with Urban Dead and you get a probable Keep vote from me. The reason the flavour is wrong: half the survivors in any zombie apocalypse movie don't suddently develop fictional (magical) martial arts skillz, the ability to dodge bullets, tunnel under walls, walk up walls, turn into gaseous clouds or any of that. It's the wrong flavour. (I know - that movie would be great.) --Funt Solo QT Scotland flag.JPG 10:12, 4 June 2008 (BST)
While I'd like to note that we already have the "walk-up-walls one" (at least that's how some people interpret Free Running), I'll make a note of your concerns. --Specialist290 18:42, 4 June 2008 (BST)
  6. Kill I think being able to buy it at level 10 is too soon. This sounds like something that a maxed out survivor would want instead of Brain Rot. If there was some way that it could only be used on people that have the skill also this would make it more fair. Otherwise, yes like above, it will probably make targets out of newer characters.--– Nubis NWO 11:18, 4 June 2008 (BST)
  7. Tuna Icecream - The flavour is just plain wrong. --Sir Bob Fortune RR 13:23, 4 June 2008 (BST)
  8. Kill/Change - The mechanics are actually pretty good, but the flavour needs to be completely revamped. Besides, things stop being cool if everyone is doing it. --Midianian|T|T:S|C:RCS| 13:45, 4 June 2008 (BST)
    Duly noted. --Specialist290 18:42, 4 June 2008 (BST)
  9. Kill - This suggestion doesn't actually suck as much as I thought it would. And GORRAM karek is right... But so is Funt... And Explodey... I'm really open, however, to anything that makes playing a zombie more attractive right now. Especially considering that Dark Buildings are a big buff to organised PKers... This is a zombie apocalypse, not a forum for survivor-on-survivor Boxing Matches, for chrissake. PKing has a place, sure, but its role ought to be secondary. It's not at the moment. Meh. --WanYao 17:31, 4 June 2008 (BST)
Duly noted. Since a lot of people have the same concerns, I might try to resubmit it as "Take Cover" at a later date and up the level cap. --Specialist290 18:42, 4 June 2008 (BST)

Spam/Dupe Votes

  1. Funny Maybe your in the wrong area. Your looking for Humorous Suggestions. Padfu-Zomfu 12:15, 4 June 2008 (BST)
No, I'm not. If I had intended this as a Humorous Suggestion, I would have submitted it as a Humorous Suggestion. Trust me; I'm the guy who submitted the Horse-Drawn Zeppelin entry there. I know what I'm doing (or at the very least, I like to maintain the illusion that I do). --Specialist290 18:42, 4 June 2008 (BST)
  2. Spam Geeze.... my first Spam vote. I don't like spamming/killing suggestions... but.. .there is no use for this. Honestly, dodging bullets, these things move father than the speed of sound. 3. Spam It's entirely unrealistic, but it's fueled by the Rule of Cool, so that's all right. Realism is a requirement of ALL suggestions. It should not be the ONLY part of the suggestion, true, but it MUST be there.--Pesatyel 07:30, 4 June 2008 (BST)
