20090919 Filter racial slurs

Suggestion description
Create a filter to delete racial slurs from character names, speech, radio broadcasts, graffiti, any other text entered by players (when I wrote this in 'Developing Suggestions' I was told there's already a filter to prevent swearing on radio broadcasts, so this probably wouldn't be too hard to implement). I'd rather not see character names like this, for example: http://www.urbandead.com/profile.cgi?id=823822

Keep Votes

  1. Keep - If done like a forum filter, just replace obviously offense terms with the initial letter and a few asterisks. It'd need to be a clear-cut list of definate slurs, not ones some people are offended by and others aren't. However, even role-played, racism is kind of a universal evil, and you can still role-play with filtered slurs, so arguments that we can let it remain for role-playing are pretty null and void. For hate's sake I spit my last breath at thee 12:58, 19 September 2009 (BST)
  2. Keep - It is true there are millions of racial slurs, but even just censoring some of them could make a difference. User:Armpit_Odor/sig - 19:56 20 September 2009 (BST)
  3. Weak Keep - Only if you gave people the option to turn the filter on/off otherwise Kill if it was forced upon us. --YoEleven 08:30, 21 September 2009 (BST)

Kill Votes

  1. Kill - UD supports roleplaying and groups should be able to roleplay within their wishes- plus nazi and jihad groups make mighty fine targets, so it works both ways. --DANCEDANCEREVOLUTION-- 07:24, 19 September 2009 (BST)
  2. Kill - Don't like it? Ignore it. There's really no surefire way to block any kind of cursing; if people want to, the_y'll fin:d a waay to beet the sy(ste)m. --Bob Boberton TF / DW Littlemudkipsig.gif 08:30, 19 September 2009 (BST)
    • Re But your argument applies to swearing as well, which is blocked on radio broadcasts; surely racial slurs are more inflammatory than ordinary swear words? It's true that people can find ways around filters with modified spelling/punctuation, but it usually lessens the impact and makes the message look more ridiculous, similar to disemvoweling Zombieham Lincoln 23:20, 19 September 2009 (BST)
  3. Kill - Words that are common in one region might be vulgar in another, which would only serve to confuse players since we all play as a single group. Also, you provide no standard for what qualifies as a racial slur. --Aichon 11:56, 19 September 2009 (BST)
  4. Kill - Don't get me wrong, I fully appreciate the intention. The problem is that the definition of 'racial slur' differs from person to person, moreso than swearwords. It'd take too long to block every possible one, and to be honest it's just not worth it. --Blake Firedancer T E RNL? P.I.S.I.T. 12:12, 19 September 2009 (BST)
    • Re I did not mean to imply that everything that could possibly qualify as a racial slur should be filtered, as some of the kill votes are interpreting it; a small list of unambiguous ones that are never used in a nonracial context would be fine. Zombieham Lincoln 23:20, 19 September 2009 (BST)
  5. Strong Kill - As everyone else. Too time consuming. Kevan gave you a block button for a reason. If someone is harrassing you, put them on your ignore list. --Haliman - Talk 14:32, 19 September 2009 (BST)
  6. Strong Kill - As above--Orange Talk 14:35, 19 September 2009 (BST)
  7. Kill - This isn't Club Penguin. As much as I appreciate the intention, players should be mature enough to cope with seeing certain words. All this does is give certain unsavoury types recognition that they are causing a problem, thereby inciting them further. Also as DDR, Bob, Aichon, Blake and Iscariot. Should "Pakistan" become ****stan? "Mickey Mouse" ****ey Mouse? --Anotherpongo 15:18, 19 September 2009 (BST)
  8. Kill - Your heart is in a good place but it's very difficult to make a decent filter/censor. I suggest gathering support among people who might be willing to do a greasemonkey add on or something.--GANG Giles Sednik CAPD 15:35, 19 September 2009 (BST)
  9. Kill - Urg... That guy's been hanging around my clinic; I know how you feel, but the problems raised above are legitimate and serious. Lelouch vi Britannia is helping make Ridleybank green_ and gives Achievements 18:07, 19 September 2009 (BST)
  10. Kill - Internet really isn't a place where you can avoid obscenities. I've seen way too racial slurs everywhere to care anymore. A better, alternative method would be to either educate people against racism, or kill them. ~Dr Frank (t) (DF) [P] (Sb) 07:13, 20 September 2009 (BST)
  11. Kill - Nah. There's already too much PC crap in the world today. -- Cheese 17:01, 20 September 2009 (BST)
  12. Kill - As above. --ZsL 23:02, 20 September 2009 (BST)
  13. kill - totally unworkable censorship. Anyway, I like porchmokeys (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x2DxyAGzGxM) and I am taking it back! --Honestmistake 17:18, 21 September 2009 (BST)
  14. Kill - As honest. --Papa Johnny 23:31, 22 September 2009 (BST)

Spam/Dupe Votes

  1. Spam - Because it's impossible for Kevan to take a position on this without unintentionally missing certain ones and giving someone a platform against him and the game. Where do you want to draw the line? Is Mick just a shortening of Michael? See what kind of response you get in Dublin with that. A great deal of it has to do with intent and a great deal to do with who is using the words. -- To know the face of God is to know madness....Praise knowledge! Mischief! Mayhem! The Rogues Gallery!. <== DDR Approved Editor 07:08, 19 September 2009 (BST)
  2. Spam - As Iscariot. Far, far too much gray space and too diverse of a population playing UD to make this suggestion even feasible. --Maverick Talk - OBR Praise Knowledge! 404 19:31, 26 September 2009 (BST)
