Seriously?
What? I'd never be selected. To quote every girlfriend I've ever had. "You're too laid back, why the hell don't you seem to care about anything? Why is everything such a laugh to you?" Really going to pick your brain...
I've recently redone my groups recruit page. I have multiple sections, which can be edited. I don't want them edited. I add the __NOEDIT__ code to each section. The edit buttons go away. ----> Recrutment page no longer has edit buttons.... Take away the code, and they come back. Add the code back to my recruitment page... and try the <noinclude> and </noinclude> tags,... The edit buttons dissapear on my groups recruit subpage, all the edit buttons come back on the recruitment page,... and then if you look at my advertisment, the edit buttons are there,... but not on the groups recruit subpage. How odd? -Poodle of DoomM! T 04:27, 15 April 2010 (BST)
- Looks like you figured it out. That was exactly what I was going to suggest, since you're not allowed to have headers in your recruitment ads. Also, your ad is actually too tall. Mind shrinking it a bit? 800px is the maximum height. —Aichon— 05:44, 15 April 2010 (BST)
- Is there an easy way of figuring out the height of a table? 05:50, 15 April 2010 (BST)
- In my browser there is. If you're using Chrome or Safari, just right click on the table, select Inspect Element, then click on the part of the code that corresponds to the table, and on the right side, click it so that it shows the information for Computed Style. It'll show you the actual height of the element in the browser. I think there's something similar in Firefox, but probably not that advanced, and you probably need an extension or two, I'd guess. —Aichon— 05:55, 15 April 2010 (BST)

The DEM Disambiguation
Regarding this edit, could you show me in what way ¯\(°_o)/¯ is connected with the abbreviation DEM? I had stated my reason for removing it on the talk page - I'm failing to find any relation between ¯\(°_o)/¯ and "DEM". If there is indeed no connection, the group should not be listed in the disambiguation, it'd be just as if I added Department of Emergency Management to every single disambiguation I can find, regardless of whether there's a reason to list it or not. G F J 09:34, 9 May 2010 (BST)
- The reason it's on there is because it's a retarded joke. --Thadeous Oakley 10:27, 9 May 2010 (BST)
- Explain to me, then, how you became an authority on how that group pronounces its name? If the members of that group feel it could be confused with any of the other groups on that disambiguation page, then it's entirely up to them. 14:43, 9 May 2010 (BST)
- OK, but to go by that logic, I could as well add the DEM to any disambiguation I see fit, all I'd have to say is "we refer to ourselves that way, we use that abbreviation". In my opinion, this would be really senseless and inappropriate, but if a visible connection between a group and the abbreviation is not necessary, it would be very much possible. Would you like me to do that? Is the state of allowing everyone to add themselves to whatever disambiguation they want to be a part of, regardless of whether there's any actual connection, really what you prefer? G F J 14:55, 9 May 2010 (BST)

heya, btw,
regarding A/VD, we don't usually bother putting 3 edit vandals on A/VD because it's more of a record keeping module for escalations, and since they've beat the ticker straight away, we don't really need to put them on there. Not to say you should take it off, it's k, just you don't need to :D --

Although, had he not, I was just planning to do a text search of A/VD and visually confirm whether or not there were examples of banned users under the three-edit rule. —Aichon— 09:18, 10 May 2010 (BST)

Do you believe a checkuser between this user and the one you perma'd earlier is in order? I know it's pretty strawman, but should we do a checkuser, just to be sure?--Yonnua Koponen Talk ! Contribs 16:08, 10 May 2010 (BST)
- I always run a check user on anyone I ban, and the one I ran on Wesker showed nothing. You can double check it in case Vash was created afterwards but I don't think it was. 16:09, 10 May 2010 (BST)

Is there yet any section in particular of which you think that it should have more examples and/or more explanation? Else, I'll just wait for Sherry to be done with the proof-reading and will then submit it to DS. -- Spiderzed▋ 15:56, 27 May 2010 (BST)
- Actually, I've never GKed in Millen Hills. I just looked up burbs with many NTs, looked which of those only have a couple of hospitals, and Millen Hills was the first one I found. While RRs are great places for GKing, I'll think I'll leave it at that, as a.) RRs tend to vanish and re-appear and that particular piece might become outdated later and b.) the point is that a bottleneck for a particular resource can make it more attractive to attack a normally less important TRP first. -- Spiderzed▋ 13:34, 29 May 2010 (BST)
- Very good points. I'm aware of keeping an eye on adjoining suburbs, but I wanted to keep it simple as that wasn't the main point. However, I settled now for Molebank as an example suburb, where the situation is a bit clearer even if you consider the adjoining suburbs, and added a note about considering TRPs near the suburb borders. -- Spiderzed▋ 14:03, 29 May 2010 (BST)

Hai i have a problem with your summation, the zombiecratic and humanitive parties provided a general platform for multiple candidates to run under the last election, from reading the arby page it seems to be assumed that only one candidate can run under either party? This was not the case in the last election, those who wanted to run under a more specialised platform created their own party, as has been the case her up until this point. Furthermore i am of the opinion that any discussion which affects the actual layout of the page should be done on the talk page allowing all affected parties to contribute instead of inside an arbitration case limited to two people ♥ Moonie Talk | Testimonials 00:10, 5 June 2010 (BST)
Mis, what was done before is that the Major parties had primary elections to decide who actually ran for their party. That was why they were called Major parties, and was the major discrepency between the majors and minors.--Yonnua Koponen Talk ! Contribs 00:24, 5 June 2010 (BST)

- Fuck that shit, why are there major in the first place? Just make them all on level pegging. --
- As far as i understood they were major because they provided a general platform for candidates to run under: survivor and zombie. The minor parties were for people who were running under another platform say fundameltalists, PKers, pimp hat supporters. ♥ Moonie Talk | Testimonials 08:34, 5 June 2010 (BST)
- Ahh. I think they should all just be equal but that's just cause I want Blob as mayor. --
- The problem there is that they aren't really serving that purpose right now. The zombie canidate is running under a third party, while a PKer (yourself) is running on the survivor ticket instead of a third party. Since the major parties aren't serving their intended purposes (survivor and zombie parties), I don't see why we don't just make them all even. ~ Red Hawk One Talk | space for lease 18:33, 5 June 2010 (BST)

About Welcomenewbie Templates
Just as an FYI, we have a shit-ton of research that shows that greeting new users with templates is worse than personalized messages that insult them when it comes to encouraging new user contribution. Like, it actively causes them to leave.
I'm not sure how much of that research we're allowed to publish (it wasn't done by us at the Wikimedia Foundation, but by some dudes at Carnegie-Mellon and the University of Minnesota), but I'll see if I can't find it for you.--Jorm 02:21, 8 June 2010 (BST)
- Really? I do make sure I don't just add the template and sign it, there's also a message with my talk link and the like in it. If you wanna fire it privately in case it's not cool to publish it there should be an email address for me here. I've been wanting to overhaul the template before anyway, but I was mainly wanting to compress it to look less imposing. Might be worth looking into an alternative. 02:31, 8 June 2010 (BST)
- So, I guess it's not a secret or anything since they published it themselves here.
- It's quite a wall of academic-ese, but they (the authors) flew into SF last week and talked with us (the design team at Wikipedia) about various things we can do to avoid "newbie death." It pretty much boils down to this: the very first interaction a new user has with a wiki's community will drive EVERY. SINGLE. interaction thereafter. If a newbie's first edit gets reverted - especially without a comment on their talk page about it - they're gone. It's a near 100% loss rate. There are a couple other documents out there I can probably swing you if you want.

- See my first talk interaction was having Ross drop WN on me, but then again I was hardly a stranger to web communities or even wikis at that point. Given that it's twenty to four in the morning I'm gonna leave that doc for now, skim it tomorrow, but does it suggest anything in preference to auto-drop templates? I'd toyed with the idea of making a batch of actual greetings as userpages in my namespace and substing them one at a time so as to keep a bit of variance and retain all the relevant links in a welcome. Basically an expanded version of my standard addendum to the template, only with maybe four or five differently worded versions to remove the sense of repetition. 03:44, 8 June 2010 (BST)
- I think every greeting person should have their own personalized message. That'd be cool.-- 03:55, 8 June 2010 (BST)
- Yeah, some people do that, Mis does it and I do when I WN. But most don't. --
- I always add a few lines after the template, but I'm going to whip up a few fuller paragraphs to use in future, incorporating the template's main points in the body of the text. 04:00, 8 June 2010 (BST)
- I had a project that tried to compress the points of WN into a smaller box, but I gave it up. BTW, can you plz arbie my case, you're my first pick. --

It's just going down a similar road that I did last night which apparently makes me a SUPER TERRIBLE DRAMA MAN even though the only people who have gone against it have admitted that it was only because they thought the drama was too much, not that Boxy made the right choice and I the wrong, and they choose to disregard the months and months of good work I've done... Sigh. Some people are idiots. The point is, you have the high ground as you've always had, you should keep it that way imo. -- 06:43, 8 June 2010 (BST)

Copy Rights
My group is looking to set up a bit of a game room, operating in the groups subpages. We intend to create a few of our own games, as well as adding a few well known ones. Regarding copyrights, would it be okay to use such items, so long as the appropriate citations, and accreditation were given? -Poodle of DoomM! T 20:39, 28 June 2010 (BST)
- As is my understanding of copyright laws (I used to moderate a third-party game based on one of Hasbro's intellectual properties), it's not about infringing on copyright/intellectual property, but about using those for profit. As long as you aren't doing so then you're protected under various international laws regarding free speech - you're only using the terms as words, not products. I could be wrong but that's how we handled it, especially after a rather nasty letter from a rather slippery lawyer. :( 20:49, 28 June 2010 (BST)
- Well some of the content would be from actual product lines, though it wouldn't be used for profit. I would give appropriate credit,... In fact, if I handle it correctly, it should turn out to be one heck of an advertisement for the various companies involved, though I should mention that it would not be used as an advertisment,.... nor for profit. -Poodle of DoomM! T 20:54, 28 June 2010 (BST)
- Should be grand. Like I say, you're not selling a product with a branded name on it, you're not trading under an assumed copyright, you're golden. 20:57, 28 June 2010 (BST)
- Just wanted to double check. I also looked for a policy on such a thing, and couldn't find one anyplace. Do we have a policy regarding copyrights here? -Poodle of DoomM! T 21:00, 28 June 2010 (BST)
- Nope. It's not been an issue as far as I know. 21:01, 28 June 2010 (BST)
- Since it's a possability with my stuff, I'll submit a policy regarding the use of copy righted info, and providing citations, and accreditation. -Poodle of DoomM! T 21:04, 28 June 2010 (BST)
- Let me know if you want some help. We had a start of one policy, which was prompted by my withdrawn policy. Perhaps we can even get UDWiki:Copyright Project started again (the talk page contains some of the start of it). --Akule Maker of fine, hand-crafted UDWiki sass since 2006 -- Akule School's back in session™ 21:54, 28 June 2010 (BST)

- Ironically, we do have a policy on copyrights, but various previous sysop teams decided that they would ignore it, even though Kevan did state that a policy should be hashed out. Currently, we are just adding the Copyright Template to copyrighted images and properly citing them. That way, if Kevan does get a cease and desist complaint (and Kevan has gotten at least two that I know of), it won't include something about how we didn't even cite the proper copyright holder. --Akule Maker of fine, hand-crafted UDWiki sass since 2006 -- Akule School's back in session™ 21:54, 28 June 2010 (BST)

- One thing to note, Mis, is that the UDwiki is based in the UK and follows their copyright laws. One notable difference is that it is called fair dealing and not fair use. --Akule Maker of fine, hand-crafted UDWiki sass since 2006 -- Akule School's back in session™ 21:54, 28 June 2010 (BST)

I actually started a discussion on it, so with Mis's permission, I'd love to move this whole discussion right over to that page. Also, If you could start a new section with everything that was previously set up by you, a link to the Copyright Policy you mentioned, an a copy of the template you mentioned that would be a great tool for this discussion. I'm glad I set this up. Hearing what you've had to say Akule, it sounds like this may have been needed for some time now, but it never really took off. -Poodle of DoomM! T 22:00, 28 June 2010 (BST)
