This page is for users to request System Operator status. The act of user promotion is restricted to those with bureaucrat status, and as such users will need to request user promotion here. System Operators and Bureaucrats cannot assign promotions unless the request has gone through this page.

Guidelines for System Operator Requests

Users who wish to request System Operator status (and users who wish to nominate other users for System Operator status) should note that before they can be considered the following guidelines should be met by the candidate:

  • Significant time within the community.
We define this as at least 6 months since the candidate's first edit.
Note: looking in a User's User contributions might give false results for this criterion, as the edit history is periodically purged on this wiki.
  • Significant activity within the community.
We define this as at least 250 edits in the past six months under the candidate's name.
Note: looking in a User's User contributions might give false results for this criterion, as the edit history is periodically purged on this wiki.
  • Prior interest in maintaining the community.
We define this as clear evidence that the candidate is already performing maintenance tasks and taking leadership roles on the wiki.
  • Desire to become a System Operator.
We define this simply as indicating in the candidate's request their desire for the position (Note that if a person is nominated by another user, the candidate in question should note their acceptance of the nomination).

If a user is highly exemplary in one criterion, a certain amount of leeway may be given with the other criteria.

Once the candidate satisfies these guidelines, the user is then subject to a community discussion. All users are asked to comment on the candidate in question, ask questions of the candidate, and discuss the candidate's suitability for becoming a System Operator. This is not a vote. It is instead merely a request for comments from the wiki community. This will continue for two weeks to allow all users an opportunity to voice their opinion regarding a candidate's qualifications for promotion. After two weeks, the Bureaucrats are responsible for announcing their decision within a reasonably short period of time. Users may continue to add their thoughts until the Bureaucrats announce their decision. The current amount of System Operators running should not influence your decisions when voicing your opinion.

Once the two weeks are up, the Bureaucrats will review the community discussion and make a decision based upon it. The user will be notified of the status of their request, and will be promoted should it appear that the community is willing to accept them as a System Operator.

Example Application

Example User

I've been around 3 months, and I've made to date 550 edits. As you can see [link here] and [link here], I've been in the leadership role attempting to create a new format for this page. I'd very much like to become a System Operator.

  • Vouch - I am willing to vouch for this user. -- Voucher 03:41, 23 Jan 2006 (GMT)
  • Against - Example User, I haven't seen any evidence of your work on the wiki. --Some user 19:01, 25 July 2006 (BST)
  • Vouch - Example User is the most active guy here. --Another user 19:01, 25 July 2006 (BST)
  • Abstain - I'm just not sure, but I don't want to say why for some reason. --Some other user 19:01, 25 July 2006 (BST)
  • Question - I just want to know what you think about this subject? --Yet another user 21:26, 4 April 2013 (BST)

  • Questions 1: Would you consider working on the game outline from your profile as a serious project? 2: what's your stance on making the suburban maps up to date?Parson Johanas 18:56, 31 December 2012 (UTC)
    1) Doubtful. Mr. Easton Ellis seems like the type to sue. 2) My only real bugbear with suburb maps is how they're so harman-friendly. The idea that "safe" and "dangerous" apply only one way is egregiously biased; to that end I did come up with an alternate colour scheme to sit alongside the current one but it was refused by the breathers. Frankly, aside from NPOV issues I think the level of information being kept up to date should be left as is; using information as a tool or a weapon has long been an interesting facet of play here and I'd be loathe to see an initiative started which might hamper that. Oh shit I'm starting to sound serious here FUCK YEAH I LOVE BOOBIES. Nothing to be done! 21:08, 1 January 2013 (UTC)

SA

"You two plotting, heartless, maniacal, smarmy little nigglers are a disgrace to anonymous internet dickheads around the world. I fucking pray neither of you shit monkeys ever end up in a position of any real authority or have the outcome of another human being's life placed in your sweaty little hands because you fuckers don't deserve an ounce trust. Not one ounce."

"And then SA chimes in on the talk page, full of mockery and spite, which would be one thing. But then he goes the extra mile and shakes Dawgjz down for cash! WTF? The fact that SA is a 'sop here, voted to restrict Dawgjz editing privilege, and then took his money to make the problem go away is paramount to fucking extortion."

Also Someone should fix that.--SA 18:02, 22 December 2012 (UTC)

Fix what? The only thing I see is that the last ban should probably be moved up higher in the list, but otherwise it all looks accurate to me. Aichon 22:54, 22 December 2012 (UTC)
Exactly why you failed this test. My SA account wasn't listed there until Karke did it.--SA 01:34, 23 December 2012 (UTC)
Meh, he did it before I saw it, and I've been sick for almost a week now, so I plead illness as an excuse. Also, it's not like those sections are exhaustive anyway (and thank God too, since otherwise they would be horrible to maintain). They tend to get added to as the need arises. Aichon 02:12, 23 December 2012 (UTC)
No shit? I'd have never guessed that people don't actively add to that fuckhueg page unless they absolutely had to. ;)
Also, I've been thinking of splitting it. That page is stupid huge. Your thoughts?--SA 09:36, 23 December 2012 (UTC)
That I don't want to be the one to fix all the broken links. Also, I seem to recall there being a discussion over this in the past, with me supporting your side but being convinced the other side was right for a reason I can't remember now. Aichon 23:55, 23 December 2012 (UTC)
We wouldn't have to fix broken links if we just have the main page as a link holder for the split pages. You know, have everything link to it but then have the sub pages linked on it for us to click through. Or if we simply pulled all of the serious vandals that are perma'd out and placed them in their own page it would cut down on size.--SA 21:04, 27 December 2012 (UTC)
I was more referring to links that went to specific entries. For instance, {{vndl}} which we have on every A/VB filing from the last few years links to that specific person's VD entry, but that template will require some serious retooling if we were to institute a change of this sort, and all of the previous A/VB cases would either need to be updated to fix them or else would be far less useful than they are now. It's not a deal-breaker, but it is an issue that needs to be considered. Aichon 22:24, 27 December 2012 (UTC)
Ach, I forgot that it called the data directly from VD. Oh well, maybe I should leave the issue alone then. :C --SA 22:34, 27 December 2012 (UTC)
Did we ever get collapsable tables working? Perhaps that's a better way of making vandal data less of a pain to view. ~Vsig.png 22:40, 27 December 2012 (UTC)
I was looking at that convo on that one page that I can't remember where I found it at and I think it relied on a css coding issue being implemented properly on Kevan's side. I don't quite remember.--SA 22:53, 27 December 2012 (UTC)
UDWiki talk:Administration. Yeah, would take some CSS updates, which usually translates to "won't work on our wiki". Something is terribly wrong with UDWiki and CSS updates never work. ~Vsig.png 23:22, 27 December 2012 (UTC)
The "nothing works on our wiki" doesn't stop at CSS, you know.--SA 23:29, 27 December 2012 (UTC)
It's all just an issue with a broken update. If Kevan can fix that one issue, we could do a whole hell of a lot of stuff (e.g. update the main page with those drop-down menus we were discussing). Aichon 00:01, 28 December 2012 (UTC)

Recently Concluded Bids

DanceDanceRevolution

I'm DDR, merry christmas. I think you all suck.

I'm applying for sysop cause I said I would half-heatedly. Do I want to? Eh. Am I needed? Eh. Could I do the job? Eh, who couldn't?

Since I'm in the "spotlight" I might as well have a quick whinge about, while I like this place, I've begun to strongly dislike the people. In the years I was an op I commonly heard talk about how the wiki was a self-gratifying, shut-off wankfest where newcomers were treated like crap and people just sucked each other off. As one of the suckers, I never thought it true. But in the recent months my opinion has changed. Most of my examples revolve conveniently around Peralta. A newcomer joins the community, does great stuff and what? The thick walls of spooge covering him from the 'inner circles' of the wiki drives him away as the remaining UDWiki community treat him like a sack of shit and desecrate his corpse for any remaining semblance of dignity they can strip from him. He co-organises a whole event? Everyone blames him for it for not being token. Personally attack him until he claims responsibility, apologises to everyone and starts his entire character roleplaying from scratch. He helps out and applies for sysop? Community dances on his bid, fucking everything about and asking irrelevant questions, then answering irrelevant questions with more irrelevant answers and rendering his hard work at trying to make this place decent completely irrelevant. He withdraws? Make long wank speeches about how it's his fault and not everyone for treating him like shit.

Never seen the wiki so effectively eradicate one user who worked so hard, and over just one month. Good work guys.

Nevertheless, if I passed this I would probably actually come around here some time. And if you like doozies like the "roleplaying dumb" saga, I couldn't deny that my increased, drunken involvement in this 'community' would probably harbor more embarassing doozies like that. Whatever, I'm keen. Oh, or if you like watching someone stretching their authority to treat new, hard working users nice rather than like a spastic, I guess I'd do that too. Or going on big tantrums and yelling at Axe Hack until the sun goes down. Whatever alt he's behind. Oh, Karek too. Oh and I wouldn't delete the wiki. You all know me, too much of a wussy do-gooder, it ain't my style.

So whatever. A ZOMBIE ANT 11:15, 23 December 2012 (UTC)

  • He's a cunt every once in awhile, looking at our past history on here shows that pretty well. But then again, out of the current team, all have them have been cocks at some point or another, barring Shorts and Spidey, and that might simply be because of my lack of interaction with them. DDR usually does a bit of work when he can and while we may not always agree on things, he usually does pretty good representing the other side in our debates. • Question You told us a lot about what the current team does wrong. What you haven't told us: What is it that you would do right that the current team doesn't? -- Spiderzed 16:39, 23 December 2012 (UTC)
I was referencing the community more than the op team, but I'll have a crack at your Q anyway. Firstly, I'd be active. Actually, that's a lie. But I'd at least try. The wiki news page at the front still says "no news" 2 days after SA nominated himself for sysop. I have no doubt some of the ops (and users, no doubt) would have seen that. However, where users can get away with ignoring that stuff, being a sysop doesn't give one a license to pass on tasks onto regular users. Sysops are bound to maintaining this place in a decent fashion. I also wouldn't circumvent the sysop guidelines that have kept us in place for 5 years, only to permaban some little idiot on the wiki. And I certainly wouldn't defend the action in misconduct. Oh, and if someone drastically changes a protected page, or system message, for the worse, I wouldn't wait until the wiki cracked a shit and the editing user left before changing it back. I would have reverted it back to the proper revision straight off the bat and worked it from there. A ZOMBIE ANT 01:32, 24 December 2012 (UTC)

If you are aware that promotion bids come with a news entry, and if you state that you wouldn't circumvent sys-op guidelines - then how can it be someone else's fault that there isn't a news entry yet? -- Spiderzed 11:08, 24 December 2012 (UTC)
Hmm. I hope this isn't a trick question, because I don't see how sysop guidelines come into play here. If so I'll probably make a right butt of myself. Anyway, I don't like the word 'fault', as the example we are talking to isn't an instance where I would lay fault or blame on anyone, it's simply an example where I think the standard of the wiki may have fallen, and it would be a goal of mine to work towards making that standard a bit higher. Other than that, I think I could imagine where you are going with these line of questions- especially thinking that I'm targetting sysops more than just the community in general. If it's along the lines of whether I'll add anything to the team. Honestly? Probably not. Does the team need me? Hell no. There's no drama around here and the workload is minimal, there's no way I'm going to paint that in a different light. The only potential change is that you will have noticed I spend a lot of time here complaining. As a guy who tries to at least have a bit of integrity at times, I'd probably try and actually get off my arse and help rather than just complaining about everything. Maybe. A ZOMBIE ANT 11:24, 24 December 2012 (UTC)
The problem I have here is that promotion bids have been accompanied since who-knows-when by a news entry. At the same time, your USP has been that you know the WIKI LAW, and will be there to enforce it no matter what, and to be active. Such an old-timer with such a stance missing to do such a trivial piece of janitorial work, yet accusing the team of slacking is puzzling, to say the least. -- Spiderzed 20:59, 24 December 2012 (UTC)

I prefer DDR being off on the side lines where i can just ignore his walls of text when he throws his little tantrums and decides something needs attention. no fuck this guy in his stupid well used asshole. --User:Sexualharrison11:31, 24 December 2012
  • Strong Against - User failed to jerk me off with his bid intro. I cannot in good faith vouch. ~Vsig.png 19:49, 24 December 2012 (UTC)
  • Against Go do something more productive with your life, honest advice. Go volunteer at your local church or animal shelter, learn a new language, join a political party, frankly anything remotely helpful to society. You're too old to waste your free-time on a near dead wiki about a near dead game. --Thadeous Oakley Talk 20:05, 24 December 2012 (UTC)
In all seriousness (although I was serious in this comment), if you really want it, then go for it, I guess it would live the place up a bit. --Thadeous Oakley Talk 21:43, 24 December 2012 (UTC)
  • Weak Vouch, weak because you seem not to truly desire the job, and because I'm cynical about how one op can radically change the attitude of the wiki team. Good luck though. Bob Moncrief EBDW! 01:20, 25 December 2012 (UTC)

Withdrawn - I am appreciative of those quick supports I received, but nothing can change the fact that I am not prepared to be a sysop, never was, and any promise to achieve activity is an insult to the unsubstantiated promises by sysops that I rarely supported myself. Sorry guys. A ZOMBIE ANT 12:29, 25 December 2012 (UTC)

Vapor

No one is safe.

Vapor is still around, still nice and helpful, and still has a bunch of the qualities I think that made him such a good, reliable person to work as a sysop. A ZOMBIE ANT 00:10, 25 December 2012 (UTC)

I was once naive and gazed deeply into the gaping maw of UDWiki. So beautiful the promises of glory it did provide. So venemous the tendrils of its captivity. Silently and without objection, I watched its machinations slowly eroded the edges of my soul. It was as if free will were only an imagined, abstract thing. For surely if such a philosophy had foundation in reality, would not I have been so enslaved? In response, I thrust my fist into the air and cried, "No more!" And thus, the chains of my subjugation were shattered, a free man once again with free will and free thought. And ne'er again shall I gaze into that shadowy soul-devouring maw. I decline. I decline. I decline. ~Vsig.png 03:58, 25 December 2012 (UTC)
  • Vouch - Mis, you, aichon all back in the team, please please. A ZOMBIE ANT 00:10, 25 December 2012 (UTC)
  • Strong Vouch. Vapor was the leader on the first big project here I got my hands dirty with (Project Timeline), and I've had nothing but the utmost respect for him since. Consistently active, excellent at wiki maintenance, and would definitely be part of my ideal op team. Bob Moncrief EBDW! 01:16, 25 December 2012 (UTC)

Declined. Aichon 05:40, 25 December 2012 (UTC)

Bob Moncrief

I might as well keep the ball rolling, here's a fresh candidate as a change from all these old, worn-out farts. Then again, he's probably Yonnua's or Axe's alt or something. Anyway the account given has been doing some things, good things, I guess everyone has seen his handywork, he'd make an excellent bot slapper (this is what job boils down to today anyway) and he seems to be a reasonable and polite young chap indeed. --Thadeous Oakley Talk 21:35, 24 December 2012 (UTC)

I'm really flattered, not just by this nomination, but by how several people have been encouraging me towards sysophood. Do know that it's definitely a possibility for the future (like I said on Spiderzed's RE, I'm most likely to apply around April or May, after I'm done with this whole being-an-undergrad thing).
But to that effect, I'm declining the bid. I should really be working on school stuff, and being a sysop would give me even more of an excuse to procrastinate. In addition, there's very little which I would be doing with buttons that I don't do already (like you said, Thad, botswatting). I'm currently working on a couple different non-sop things (like revamping the various projects), so don't worry, I'll be active.
Also, no, I'm not Yon, nor am I new-future-remodeled-Axe. I could be Aichon executing a heavily concealed, multi-year plan to eventually hold both crat seats though. Bob Moncrief EBDW! 01:11, 25 December 2012 (UTC)
  • Comment. Can't be Yon. He's (?) accurately responded to what I say instead of inventing dialogue to reply to. Nothing to be done! 21:38, 24 December 2012 (UTC)
He is (Yon) aspiring to be a talented young politician (as am I) and lawyer, don't blame the water for being wet. --Thadeous Oakley Talk 21:48, 24 December 2012 (UTC)
Iunno, even Jim Allister shoots straight once in a blue moon. I foresee a future of unreturned poll deposits. Nothing to be done! 21:50, 24 December 2012 (UTC)
Sometimes I feel like my biggest weakness around here is not getting all y'all's European references. Bob Moncrief EBDW! 01:11, 25 December 2012 (UTC)
BURN THE NEW-WORLDER Nothing to be done! 03:05, 25 December 2012 (UTC)
  • Strong Vouch - Bob is definitively the most promising new user we had in a while. Constantly gnoming behind the curtains, never drumming up drama, someone who looks to get things done. That is the kind of personality we can never have enough of on the team. -- Spiderzed 21:42, 24 December 2012 (UTC)
  • Against as stated by bob himself he's got a very important qualification he should be doing. In the summer when he's done it, he can fritter his life away here. --Ross Less Ness Enter Stranger... 22:51, 24 December 2012 (UTC)
  • weak against might change it a vouch. but for now I think it's too soon. i mean how do we know you won't pull a thad?--User:Sexualharrison22:56, 24 December 2012
  • Vouch - Bring him in. Would be nice to have any worker in the team, open the doors! A ZOMBIE ANT 00:08, 25 December 2012 (UTC)

Declined. Also, it's awkward getting nominated again so soon after I was just promoted to 'crat.Aichon 05:40, 25 December 2012 (UTC)

Thad

If there's a bandwagon forming. I want no part of it. But if the old gaurd is coming back, it won't be complete without Thad. In all seriousness, if you want to touch on the subject of circle jerking, Thad was the wiki's biggest victim. To his credit, he took it all in stride and in the end he ducked out without deleting the entire wiki. Since he's active, I say give him another chance. If he wants it that is. ~Vsig.png 20:48, 24 December 2012 (UTC)

  • I think my current feeling towards the wiki is one of apathy and nostalgia, as my attitude in general here reflects and like with my view seen on DDR/SA's bid. I have been pretty much done with this place and the internet in general since my demotion last year, and my current "activity" is mostly explained by old habits and a brief vacation from my busy Uni life. Yeah, maybe I will keeping popping back in here and there, but don't expect anything constructive from me anymore, that time is long gone. Thank you for your consideration however. Declined. --Thadeous Oakley Talk 21:30, 24 December 2012 (UTC)
You could totally have used this as a platform to stand up for your fellow countryman and hold a vigil for Van Persie's near-death experience. I feel you missed a trick, shadow-me. Adeous Thoakley 21:44, 24 December 2012 (UTC)
Don't be too judgemental yet. It is a well-known fact that Dutchmen spend all winter drunken on genever and grog, to make up for the lack of radiators inside their trailers. Thad can only be considered sober enough to be full of his faculties beginning with spring on March 21. -- Spiderzed 21:53, 24 December 2012 (UTC)
Dutch is the best nationality you can have, there you go. Also Nice Guide --Thadeous Oakley Talk 22:06, 24 December 2012 (UTC)
