20071220 Show Footprints on Map
Swiers 23:08, 20 December 2007 (UTC)
Suggestion type
interface improvement
Suggestion scope
minimap and snow / footprints
Suggestion description
The text description of footprints can be a bit hard to decipher. There should also be a "graphical" indication on the minimap indicating the footprints you see in the snow. This need not be complex- just put an "i" (for in) or an "o" (for out) on the mini map in the appropriate places. I edited up an example of what this would look like that also shows how simple the resulting code would be; there is no need to worry about server load with this one.

Keep Votes
- Authors vote. Actually, I'm coding a greasemonkey extension that will do this, but I figured it would be worthwhile as a suggestion, given that Kevan controls when / how long the snow will be in effect. Swiers 01:59, 21 December 2007 (UTC)
- Keep - Yes. Good plan.--SeventythreeTalk 01:26, 21 December 2007 (UTC)
- Keep - Ok. --Private Mark 01:31, 21 December 2007 (UTC)
- Keep - Sure, just maybe something that looks a little nicer, Maybe a white line for each direction instead of letters (There wouldn't be seperate lines for entering and leaving.) --BlobdudeTalk TM MC 01:40, 21 December 2007 (UTC)
- Seeing as I'm coding a greasemoneky extension that will do this, what characters do you think I should use? Or maybe I should use .gif arrows? Swiers 01:59, 21 December 2007 (UTC)
- Keep/Change - I like my version better. X = someone exited, • means someone entered, and * means tracks are going both ways. I chose blue because black wasn't Christmas-y or snow-y enough. --Ms.Panes 02:39, 21 December 2007 (UTC)
- Keep - I would like them presented visually. --Midianian|T|T:S|C:RCS| 10:38, 21 December 2007 (UTC)
- Keep - graphic representation needs work, but I like the spirit of the idea--CorndogheroT-S-Z 13:12, 21 December 2007 (UTC)
- Change - As long as it is disabled by default and if you want to use it, you have to go to your profile and activate it. --Heretic144 20:25, 21 December 2007 (UTC)
- Keep - Something like this would be nice. -- AHLGTG THE END IS NIGH! 04:10, 22 December 2007 (UTC)
Kill Votes
- Kill - The example shows how horrible and annoying this will be.--Karekmaps?! 01:48, 21 December 2007 (UTC)
- I'm sure a better choice on the characters / colors could be less annoying. Any ideas? Gif arrows would look nice, but were to much work for the purpose of this suggestion. Swiers 01:59, 21 December 2007 (UTC)
- Kill - it's a simple game interface, let's keep it that way. Footprints don't seem all that useful anyway -- boxy talk • i 01:50 21 December 2007 (BST)
- Kill - I don't really like it. Maybe this could be done with an extension if you want it. --PdeqTalk* 02:20, 21 December 2007 (UTC)
- kill - i'm with karek... and whoever said footprints are kinda useless. --WanYao 03:21, 21 December 2007 (UTC)
- I don't think footprints are so useless. They are potentially a handy indicator as to what the more active areas in a neighborhood are. This is useful if, for example, you want to find a revive point without resorting to looking one up via meta-gaming. This suggestin is aimed mostly at helping non-metagamers a little bit. Besides, just because something is useless, doesn't mean you shouldn't make it easy to see and play with. Clothing is entirely useless as well, for example. Swiers 04:35, 21 December 2007 (UTC)
- The reason I consider it useless is because almost everywhere I go -- some well travelled regions, others much less so -- there are usually footprints in almost every direction... Thus, its tactical use is limited because the information is almost always the same. Dig? --WanYao 09:43, 21 December 2007 (UTC)

- It's good to add them to minimap but i don't particulary like how it looks in your suggestion. Ms.Panes' above is a bit better, but still... --~~~~ [talk] 07:43, 21 December 2007 (UTC)
- Weak Kill How would east and west work, they arent on the example or the location name is in the way?--Rosslessness 09:13, 21 December 2007 (UTC)
- The characters would simply appear to the left or right of the button that shows the current location name. The table can handle the extra 6 characters (max) width this would cause in the central cell. Swiers 16:20, 21 December 2007 (UTC)
- Fair enough. I'm still not in favour as its a bit overally eye aching. --Rosslessness 21:15, 21 December 2007 (UTC)

- Kill - I'm not even a fan of the footprints, let alone putting something on the map. --Ryiis 14:41, 21 December 2007 (UTC)
- Weak Kill - I don't like footprints. *shrugs* BoboTalkClown 21:28, 21 December 2007 (UTC)
- Kill I don't like my interface being cluttered with ioioio --Jon Pyre 22:47, 21 December 2007 (UTC)
- Kill - Io, Io, It's off to work we go...As above and below, I mean it is kind of obvious where the footprints are going anyway right? Acoustic Pie 22:52, 21 December 2007 (UTC)
- Kill - Ugly. And footprints aren't useful enough to justify it. - Grant 01:35, 22 December 2007 (UTC)
- Weak Kill- As Grant. --Darth LumisT! A! E! SR 01:38, 22 December 2007 (UTC)
- Kill/change - As grant.Studoku 02:03, 22 December 2007 (UTC)
- Kill - A better idea would be to show only the most recent footprints. --Uncle Bill 06:12, 22 December 2007 (UTC)
- Yep, that would be nice. Reduces the clutter, AND adds some actual new info. And yeah, rahter than "i" or "o", a little graphic would be nice; I should have put more care into my example file, instead of assuming people would trust Kevan to make a good design choice. - About 45% of my suggestions are newbie helping. And now...you throw in a suggestion that might confuse the newbies. Where do you think I stand? --•▬ ▬••▬ • •••• •▬ ▬•▬• ▬•▬ #nerftemplatedsigs 14:50, 24 December 2007 (UTC)
