Do you still plan on running the Duck Hunt event? If I run an event starting the second week of February, will it interfere with your plans? ~Vsig.png 17:18, 19 November 2010 (UTC)

Manhunt Interview

So the interview is located here and here. Feel free to change how you want your name to be represented or anything else in your answers. I went with Ross because I don't like typing a lot. I might change the order around a little and how much is on the main page, and how much spills over, but for the most part it will look like this. Thanks again for all your help.

I stole your Manhunt Marathon image because it seems to be the current "big thing" in Manhunt. If you would like us to promote a different Manhunt event, please feel free to change the image or the text underneath the image. Or if you don't, we can erase it as well. -MHSstaff 18:57, 20 November 2010 (UTC)

Mudkip Hunt

There's a week left, so this is to remind you to meet at The Roger Arms, Penny Heights if alive, or Junkyard 98,76 if dead, Penny Heights, 3 days before the competition begins. DJSpinbad will be at that location to confirm you are there when the competition begins. Those who do not arrive will be disqualified. --•▬ ▬••▬ • •••• •▬ ▬•▬• ▬•▬ #nerftemplatedsigs 20:31, 23 November 2010 (UTC)

Oh,... I have to tell him about the arbitration for it to be taken seriously? -EstacadoTalk 23:50, 1 December 2010 (UTC)

While the wiki community attempts to work on the basis of encouragement and cooperation, there are occasions where wiki users find themselves unable to reach accord. In the event of this happening, the Arbitration Team may be called upon to intervene, and attempt to find a reasonable compromise that, while perhaps not satisfying both parties, may at least assist in defusing the situation, thanks to the unbiased third party. Show me anywhere you tried to reach accord on this. --RosslessnessWant a Location Image? 11:10, 2 December 2010 (UTC)

I was doing some reading, and it looks like the Battle of Krinks was due for un-protecting awhile ago. Mind you, I'm mentioning it here, rather than on A/PT, because I'm not filing a formal request to have it un-protected. I'm merely pointing out that it was due as a courtesy of sorts, but if I had my druthers, I'd just leave it protected indefinitely since I'd rather not see that can of worms reopened again. I'm happy to re-evaluate him. I'm willing to assume the brain explosions he's had in the last few days were just a product of the stress of exams, he said he'd have some around this time, same shit happened to me on wiki all the time. As for the checkuser, he usually has the good sense to back down when he's told en masse that he's wrong, like the incident when he complained about you. I don't think the community wants him out just yet, so I'm for cycling it as successful for sure. You can do it if you like, I might when I get home. -- LEMON #1 00:42, 9 January 2011 (UTC)

An Fak?

What? Fak, fak is both singular and begins with a Fer sound (as in rhymes with flak.) as opposed to an ef sound. Unless he's calling it an F.A.K. it should be A fak. Although the an H. thing is probably correct. --RosslessnessWant a Location Image? 02:21, 22 January 2011 (UTC)

Sysop-ing

Is going well. Not a lot of drama at the moment (not that I miss it). I just noticed that when I was speedy'ing pages that sometimes the deletion comment was filled in and sometimes not. I thought maybe it had something to do with deleting from the page its history page (I'm making sure to check history before each deletion) but that does not seem to be the case. It happens sometimes when deleting normally. Just an oddity, I suppose. ~Vsig.png 20:30, 27 January 2011 (UTC)

A hypothetical question...

Yo. Just appealing to your knowledge of all things wiki here. If I were hacking on yet another UD toy, and I wanted some wiki page automatically updated from me own server, would it be okay to create a wiki user who would not actually be a person, but a robot, which would edit some page or pages under its own wiki user space once a day? Wotan's templar

Have just seen that you have deleted them, probably as part of the vandalism by the suspected Cornhole sockpuppets. However, they are on the stats page. Unless Cornhole has really worked on his alt army, it's maybe someone else? -- Spiderzed 13:15, 29 January 2011 (UTC)

Reading the contents of the page (check recent changes) with its naming of corn specifically I'm fairly confident. Plus his targetting of A/A A/VB, the user pages of users specifically involved in the battle of Krinks, Krinks itself, groups involved in the battle of krinks, his history of zerging, his use of open proxies and my own gut feeling, I'm sure that its very easy for Corn to create ten alts.
Oh. And this is fairly damning. http://www.urbandead.com/profile.cgi?id=1671228
But keep on poking me. One day I'll abuse my power. --RosslessnessWant a Location Image? 13:22, 29 January 2011 (UTC)

Oh, I didn't mean that it is A/M-worthy - even if it was a misjudgement, the surrounding heap of obvious vandalism and the quick need to undo it would excuse it as wrist-slap stuff.
But interesting findings. Looking forward to Google's next caching of UD profiles to learn who the remainder are... -- Spiderzed 13:32, 29 January 2011 (UTC)

No point. The sub sections list all the individuals, and the main is just an alphabetical list. Who can't work out your third bid came after your second?--RosslessnessWant a Location Image? 14:36, 30 January 2011 (UTC)
Yeah, that I can do, but the main one will also be chronological ordered just like the sub cats. I'll probably start with copying the template from Successful bids, since that's the largest one, and then manually check the dates on the other bids and enter them in the template.--Umbrella-White.pngThadeous OakleyUmbrella-White.png Talk 14:47, 30 January 2011 (UTC)

thadeous oakley

Oh yay, now we get to have this discussion. Here's my piece: community is pretty divided, I am very surprised to note the gnomes being in support of mistergame en masse and the others mostly against, thought it would be a bit more opposite. Like earlier, personally I don't have a problem with promoting thadeous, he's demonstrated to the community the exact type of user he would be as an op and most of the regulars are more than happy with that. -- ϑanceϑanceevolution 05:44, 7 February 2011 (UTC)

Let me go away and think about this. I have my concerns. As for that other thing you Emailed me about, I have no problem with you pursuing it, although I'm apathetic. --RosslessnessWant a Location Image? 12:13, 7 February 2011 (UTC)
Okay good. I didn't intend for help, just an opinion on it. -- ϑanceϑanceevolution 12:15, 7 February 2011 (UTC)
Actually, out of interest, how do you personally check to see if an IP is a proxy?? -- ϑanceϑanceevolution 12:15, 7 February 2011 (UTC)
IP Checker sites. There's also a couple of sites that set up pages and records IP's that are linked with spammers. Google in some cases. Technology is pretty easy. --RosslessnessWant a Location Image? 12:18, 7 February 2011 (UTC)
O.k. My concern is that Thads contributions to the wiki are wide but shallow. He gets involved with everything, but rarely takes a "leadership" role in creating stuff. His big project of the year appears to be a table listing promotion bids in order. If you compare his bid with say, the last successful bid, the support received is less, the community, is split. There are outstanding concerns. You want to promote him? Maybe. Convince me one way or the other. --RosslessnessWant a Location Image? 12:31, 7 February 2011 (UTC)
I'm indifferent either way, but I'd like to be assured your views are more a reflection of the communities' say than your personal opinion. As I've said on the bid, I'm personally not exactly convinced he'd make a reliable sysop but the vouches predominantly come from people like me who have seen Thad's whole portfolio from the start, and none of that seems to bother them.
Do I think promoting him under these circumstances is pretty crappy? Personally I think it is a bit. I think there tends to be a lowering of standard by the community, for a user who runs for the second or third time or so, and coming from a person that just did more for his second bid, I'm a bit disappointed by it but now I'm just being a bitch. I've seen users promoted with less support, and rejected with more support. Up to us and I don't mind either way but you have veto power if you feel it's within reason to use it, and unless its in extreme cases, I'll always be more than happy to respect it. As should Thad if he wants to maturely consider the position a possibility in the future. -- ϑanceϑanceevolution 12:58, 7 February 2011 (UTC)
Just to conclude because I realised I never actually made a decision. Essentially I'm for, but still, the above shit I wrote is very important in explaining my reasoning. -- ϑanceϑanceevolution 13:01, 7 February 2011 (UTC)
Hell, if it was my opinion I'd just flat out say no! I hate to say it, but some people's votes hold more weight with me than others. I'm swung very strongly be Spiderzeds vote, and much less so by C Whitty. And his answer to my final question about leadership could have well been replaced by a mudkip and been as useful. The sysop community is split, and if it wasn't for a few votes by people I think are amazing wikizens I feel we wouldn't be having this discussion. But anyway. Personally its a no from me, but a fair number of people want to give him a go. Frankly. (And its completely without precedent) I'd love to give him the position and re-evaluate his ass in three months. --RosslessnessWant a Location Image? 13:44, 7 February 2011 (UTC)
lol. We could always bully him into it. Really though I don't think it's entirely necessary. -- ϑanceϑanceevolution 23:28, 7 February 2011 (UTC)
Not that it's my place or anything but didn't you guys bitchslap Jerrel down for suggesting a shorter-term/differently-governed op position? The sun shone, having no alternative, on the nothing new 23:30, 7 February 2011 (UTC)
It's not. and it was probably for him being a retard -- ϑanceϑanceevolution 23:33, 7 February 2011 (UTC)
^This. So, I've raised some points. DDR. Promote or not? --RosslessnessWant a Location Image? 19:52, 8 February 2011 (UTC)
You can force a re-evaluation through arbies, if he agrees to it.--Yonnua Koponen Talk ! Contribs 20:50, 8 February 2011 (UTC)
Perhaps, but Its not really resolving the issue. I'm personally against the bid, but I feel the community is split, whereas DDR thinks the community wants a yes, but is apathetic about actual promotion. --RosslessnessWant a Location Image? 20:54, 8 February 2011 (UTC)
Oh yeah, but it's completely beyond me to comment on that. I was merely stating that if you did want to enforce a shorter term (as you considered above), there was a way that you could enforce it.--Yonnua Koponen Talk ! Contribs 21:01, 8 February 2011 (UTC)
Arbitration is for dispute resolution, not for establishing contracts... As for the point ross, I still feel the same way about the promotion, the more active and central users of the community are generally the ones saying yes. -- ϑanceϑanceevolution 21:25, 8 February 2011 (UTC)
Ok. --RosslessnessWant a Location Image? 21:34, 8 February 2011 (UTC)

less indents.

So your final verdict? just to confirm. -- ϑanceϑanceevolution 21:42, 8 February 2011 (UTC)

Hmm, I'm probably being too literal in my opposition, and at the end of the day it probably is my opposition. Hmm. Ok. With central support I'm not going to oppose the promotion, but I'm retaining my general Hmm position. So yeah. Promote as you see fit. --RosslessnessWant a Location Image? 21:53, 8 February 2011 (UTC)
Alrighty. Well I have to rush out now for some mobile phone shit so when I come back in a few hours if nothing's happened by then I'll deal with it. You're free to give a last minute point or veto or discussion etc if you feel its needed -- ϑanceϑanceevolution 00:25, 9 February 2011 (UTC)

Borehamwood

Hello Rosslessness,

I hear all sorts of accusations about the borehamwood survivors and their zombie pets, I guess that the usual smoke and no fire rountine. I think any side that had a TAAK on it will get accused of zerging ;), thats probably the only influence he has had on the game.

Cheers

Probationary Sys-Op

Didn't want to bring that up while the bid discussion still runs, as it could be seen as me mingling with things that are none of my business. But that one got me thinking:

Rosslessness said:

I think some Sys-Op on Probation clause with a shortened tenure could serve a valuable purpose to cover disputed cases as Thad's or Cheese's RE. Rather than to just have the options of "Yes, and now we are stuck with you for 8 friggin' months" or "No, and now bugger off to re-apply in a half year", a "Yes, but you better do well the next three months" could give the crats a middle-ground option and especially help with candidates who promise future activity.
Would of course need some more bells and whistles to avoid abuse like repeated Probationary Sys-Op tenures, but before I put it up on A/PD, I better plug you current crats to see if you think that it would be a worthwhile idea. (DDR is free to chime in here - didn't send him a separate message as I expect him to watch your talk anyway, and to cut down on the risk of the same discussion being led in two separate places at once.) -- Spiderzed 21:15, 9 February 2011 (UTC)
Frankly I think it should be compulsory. --RosslessnessWant a Location Image? 21:17, 9 February 2011 (UTC)
Oh and you might want to ask the guy who has been crat pretty much permanently over the last few years as well, the wonderful mr box. --RosslessnessWant a Location Image? 21:20, 9 February 2011 (UTC)

all hail boxy!----sexualharrisonStarofdavid2.png ¯\(Boobs.gif)/¯ 03:25, 11 February 2011 (UTC)
It's an interesting idea... but I would rather limit the powers of "probationary sysops", than to force early reevaluations on them. Perhaps they can get all the buttons, but don't get a say on A/VB and A/M cases? They can still do all the janitorial work of sysops, and if they want to have a say in the drama beds later on (after your suggested 3 months, perhaps) they can do so through the reevaluation process. Not all "probies" might want the extra powers/responsibilities, and can remain at the probationary level if they wish
But basically, I don't think that more frequent reevaluations is the way to go (even if it's just once). Major problems can be handled via misconduct, minor problems, well they are the lifeblood of the wiki (where would we be without teh drama? Boxer.gif), and we just get on with it -- boxy talkteh rulz 00:32 13 February 2011 (BST)
This would be better than the forced A/RE. A/RE will just make newer sysops weaker and be more inclined to just be crowd pleasers rather than be bold ops, which sometimes is necessary. The first few months are pretty unfamiliar and difficult anyway. It'd make it too much of a popularity contest imo. -- ϑanceϑanceevolution 00:54, 13 February 2011 (UTC)
My thought on PSO was less to make probation dependent on being new, but rather on being disputed - essentially, a "yes, but" card for cases when community input is unclear. Completely new ops might be more often heavily disputed than those who've already served a tenure and have shown that they know the ropes - but not always, as most recently seen with Vapor, who was overall well-accepted despite being new. I can see some merit in a buffer between promotion and power over the drama sections for certain new op candidates, but for RE (as in, say, Cheese's RE), it wouldn't really make sense. -- Spiderzed 01:23, 13 February 2011 (UTC)
Cheese's A/RE wasn't really such a big issue though, ross and I agreed on the demotion and there was little response from the community that would suggest it was a wholly unwanted decision. -- ϑanceϑanceevolution 02:04, 13 February 2011 (UTC)
I don't like the idea of singling out "dodgy" sysop applicants, and telling them they are under suspicion. If they're dodgy enough to warrent special attention, then the 'crats should just reject -- boxy talkteh rulz 07:12 13 February 2011 (BST)
I agree with this. If sysops were probationary, it would be for every new promotion, not just those that were "dodgy". Simply put I'd change the re-evaluation policy to read. "After their initial promotion all sysops would be probationally reviewed after 3 months." --RosslessnessWant a Location Image? 09:59, 13 February 2011 (UTC)
I still think that's a slightly shitty idea. Making them accountable for their first 3 months is not a good thing. We shouldn't be encouraging sysops to keep a low profile or keep out of opinionated discussions where (or too an extent that) they may be needed, for fear of being seen as 'unworthy'. -- ϑanceϑanceevolution 13:12, 13 February 2011 (UTC)
Cheese was IMHO heavily contested between those who had no hope in his activity improving, and the optimists who assumed he could make a Rocky-like return. But that's just an arbitrary example that could as well be replaced by Yon's RE (where recognition of his janitorial workload conflicted with the checkuser incident and some weird A/VB drama). -- Spiderzed 22:25, 14 February 2011 (UTC)

Interesting. We have now two completely different ideas floating around (shortened tenure vs all buttons, no opinion page say), and two different trigger ideas (compulsory for new ops vs option for disputed candidates). Don't think that I'll get everyone on the same page looking at that, so for now at least I will refrain from pursuing that idea further. -- Spiderzed 22:25, 14 February 2011 (UTC)

Question. Was the Duck Hunt an official part of the Manhunt Marathon. It says that it is on the Duck Hunt page but not on the Manhunt Marathon page. I'm going to write up an overview of the Duck Hunt for Malton Manhunt past events. ~Vsig.png 23:57, 11 February 2011 (UTC)

You're definitely onto something

I decided to scope out the Hospital cluster in Pegton. Sure enough, where the cades are VSB, dozens of baby docs. Just next door where the cades are EHB, not so much. I'm going to keep an eye on it until its time to head off to AHMH4. As far as the guide, do you plan to expand on it as this experiment progresses? I think there is a lot more potential for the guide but I don't want to shoot it down just because I think its incomplete. If you're going to actively update it then swing my vote to definite support. ~Vsig.png 04:47, 15 February 2011 (UTC)

axe hack

What are your thoughts on axe hack? I'm fine with promoting him, although personally I think if the content in his bid is anything to go by, he's going to make a really, really garbage sysop when it comes to drama (see: "I work on FACTS" statement then his complete ignoring of facts like TOU and our "pornography as vandalism" clause so he can spout precedence from wikipedia. Not to mention his indecisiveness on the bid otherwise) but that's my opinion and he has the community support for me to be happy to promote him. -- ϑanceϑanceevolution 00:39, 17 February 2011 (UTC)

how can I make it so the boobs are a link to my name space? having trouble getting the code right.----sexualharrisonStarofdavid2.png ¯\(Boobs.gif)/¯ 17:47, 27 February 2011 (UTC)

You can't in this wiki version. You can only turn the image into a redirect by entering it on the image page, as done for this image (to pick an example). However, this is a global change that affects all instances of that image (especially the Boobs template, for which your image was originally uploaded). Best you could do is to upload a dupe of the boobs image exclusively for your sig and make that one a redirect. -- Spiderzed 17:53, 27 February 2011 (UTC)
