Suggestion description
A new sub-skill of Radio Operation called Triangulation.
This skill would allow a survivor to use a radio in combination with a directional antenna to locate the approximate source of a radio transmission.
Alongside each radio message, a circular icon will appear indicating the approximate direction to the source of the transmission (corresponding to one of the eight compass directions (N, NE, E, SE, S, SW, W, NW.) The direction would be based on the actual bearing between your current location and the source of the transmission, rounded to the nearest multiple of 45°. A different (probably a bullseye symbol) would appear if the source was the current location or a neighboring block.
Pros
- When following a 2- or 3-way conversation on the radio, you will (usually) be able to see which messages came from which side.
- If someone sends a distress call and forgets to give their location, at least you have a clue.
- If someone is sending offensive messages, it is easier to locate and kill them.
The last two would require some co-operation between players.
Cons
- A dedicated, coordinated RKer or GKer group could locate radios for destruction more efficiently.
I don't think that is very likely though. With somewhat less effort, RKers and GKers have an excellent chance of finding a radio by just going to the nearest mall or powered PD.
Minor details
Would this skill require a new item?
No. The directional antenna comes in the box with the radio and always has done. It's just that no-one has figured out how to use it until now.
Could zombies use this skill?
No. It involves positioning the radio, rotating the antenna and (if indoors) running to a window that faces in the appropriate direction, all in the 10 seconds or so that the sender is transmitting. Zombies don't have the dexterity for this. You'll have to get a death-cultist friend to pass this information to you.
Is there a random error in the direction calculation?
No. Although it might add realism, this would be a source of confusion if you were looking at the direction icons to see who said what in a radio conversation.
Could you estimate the distance as well as the direction?
No. The skill is in adjusting a directional antenna. If it were possible to estimate the distance from the signal quality, you would be able to do it already without this skill.
Wouldn't this benefit PKers?
Not necessarily. If your radio messages are attracting unwanted attention from a medium-sized group of PKers that should tell you something. If it's intentionally offensive, well run away after transmitting! They can only locate the radio, not the player. And this is not going to turn a non-PKer into a PKer.

- Keep - I like it. I've seen a bunch of anti-Semites, racists, jerks, punks, asshats, hagnats, morons, idiots, spammers, etc on the radio who spam my page every day I log in. This would help me find out who they are greatly and add them to my blacklist so I can shove my benelli in their face next time we meet. Ioncannon11 23:33, 19 May 2008 (BST)

- Keep - I prefer 'trenchy drama' to 'griefy spammer drama'. I was at the Fort Perryn siege and some cowardly morons from TRF kept spamming the radio channels for almost the entire 2 months it was held. Kill Votes
- Kill - The last thing this game needs is yet more trenchie drama about who said what to whom over the radio.--Jiangyingzi 03:03, 16 May 2008 (BST)
- Kill - Triangulation requires a signal to be picked up by 3 different sources. There would be no way to triangulate the source of a radio transmission with one antenna's data. --#19 - DrPain TMG 05:01, 19 May 2008 (BST)
- That's right. Because of this and the rounding error, you typically need 5 players with this skill to receive the signal, to narrow the possible locations down to 2 or 3 blocks, assuming everyone is in the same suburb. This limitation is intentional. You wouldn't want a lone player to be able to pinpoint the location of the transmitter exactly. --Explodey 10:44, 19 May 2008 (BST)
- Kill - To get a triangulation, it would require some pretty serious meta-gaming (at least three people, widely spaced in Malton). I can see only one use for it, hunting down a serial jerk spamming the radios, and even then you're only going to get his latest throw away account (if he's even still there once you get to the general area). Sure, it may well work, but the amount of half cocked, vigilante lynchings (with no more to go on that a message came from your general direction) would more than offset it, IMO -- boxy talk • i 08:00 19 May 2008 (BST)
- Kill - What about people who like spamming the radio? Hm? If I want to tell some thousands of survivors and zombies how my penis is doing, well...how are they going to know otherwise? You guys have a right to know without me being prosecuted for anything but those murders. --Vandurn 02:25, 27 May 2008 (BST)
Spam/Dupe Votes
- Spam Promotes PKing. Think about it, remove zombies from the game and this would make no difference. The focus of the game is (should be to some) on zombies vs survivors with some PKers and ZKers thrown in. This puts the focus too much on PKers. That is, essentially, the point of the suggestion. Some jackass on the radio annoying you? Hunt him down. The fact that you may just get the radio and not the operator is irrelevant since its the OPERATOR you want, not the radio.--Pesatyel 02:11, 16 May 2008 (BST)
Re Zombies will notice some difference, because death cultists use the radio and they could also be targeted. --Explodey 13:32, 17 May 2008 (BST)I think I misunderstood Pesatyel's justification, so please ignore this comment. --Explodey 23:28, 18 May 2008 (BST)- "Notice some difference"? What does THAT mean? The players would notice differences with ANY new game implementation. Zombies have NO factor in this suggestion (other than "noticing stuff"). I'm not saying they HAVE to. I'm saying that any "combat" suggestion that takes the focus away from the survivors vs zombies and into PKing is a BAD suggestion. Basically, your saying that some radio spam is worse than anything a zombie (or zombies) can do. So ignore all the zombies in the city, lets go after some dork with a radio.--Pesatyel 21:53, 17 May 2008 (BST)
- Spam - As above: needless and overpowered promotion of revenge PKing... Also, I am sure this is a dupe, but I am lazy. --WanYao 13:01, 16 May 2008 (BST)
