When retiring from full-time duty, command and officer personnel may request a retired rank, with which they may continue to be part of the MFU, retaining official member status and forum access. Retired members are distinguished by the addition of "ret." to the highest rank they held at the time they had been active. Although being exempt from reporting requirements, they are strongly encouraged to log in and report as time allows. Retired members are sometimes assigned only to a division and not to a specific district, suburb, or team, but may attach themselves to a district or suburb crew on a temporary or semi-permanent basis.
The following retired ranks are available:
*ret. Chief of Forensics (rCoF)
*ret. Head Coroner (rHC)
*ret. Coroner (rCR) | |||
*ret. Senior Pathologist (rSP)
*ret. Junior Pathologist (rJP)
Retired members may return to full-time duty upon request filed with the Chief of Forensics or with the Head Coroner of the division in which the retired member wishes to be assigned. Because they retain their forum access, retired members do not need to file a reinstatement request in the public [http://s1.zetaboards.com/brainstock/topic/2154432/1/ returning members] thread of the DEM. Upon reinstatement, retired members are often commissioned at one rank below that distinguished by their retirement rank. For example, a ret. Head Coroner may be reinstated as a Coroner, a ret. Coroner may be reinstated as a Senior Pathologist.
Command personnel retiring from the ranks of Chief of Forensics or Head Coroner retain access to the DEM Council. They may participate in council discussions but do not have the ability to vote.

The Malton Forensics Unit has a structured chain of command. The hierarchical organization is designed for efficiency and clarity. MFU members are spread out throughout the city, and one of their greatest strengths are their organizational abilities and their dedication to help out each other, to aid members of other DEM groups and all upstanding citizens of Malton. As such, while MFU personnel are expected to work within the chain of command, following the guidelines and policies put forth by their superiors, they are also strongly encouraged to communicate and adapt to meet local needs to the best of their abilities. MFU officers are encouraged to coordinate and work with any local organization whose goals are congruent with DEM and MFU goals - saving lives, and providing revivification to fallen survivors.

Department Organization
The Chief of Forensics is in charge of all MFU operations throughout Malton. The city is divided up in a grid-work pattern of suburbs, organized into four quadrants known as divisions. A Head Coroner commands the MFU operations in an entire division. Each division is broken up into 5 districts, which consist of 5 suburb blocks (see diagrams below). Within each of these districts, a Coroner is appointed to organize the district and relay orders to lower ranking officers. Each district is comprised of 5 suburbs, each of which contains a suburb team presided over by a Senior Pathologist. Junior Pathologists and Lab Technicians are under a Senior Pathologist's authority. In addition, mobile teams operating throughout a district or division can be formed, which are led by a Senior Pathologist or Coroner (depending on team size and range of operations) and whose members consist of all ranks below that of the team leader.
In summary, the chain of command is:
Official Ranks
Chief of Forensics (CoF)
The Chief of Forensics (CoF) is in charge of MFU policy and personnel for the entire city.
- The Chief of Forensics shall have a minimum of 22 levels of training with the MFU.
- The Chief of Forensics shall appoint a Head Coroner for each of the four divisions.
- The Chief of Forensics shall monitor and decide about new applications for membership and carry out the necessary actions upon approval.
- The Chief of Forensics shall make sure that member lists and rosters are updated in a timely manner.
- The CoF may delegate some of these duties to a Head Coroner as needed.
The current Chief of Forensics is: Toto25
The Chief of Forensics is a member of the DEM Council and is often granted board administration privileges.
- Should the Chief of Forensics retire, it is his duty to name two candidates for his replacement.
- These candidates are voted on by the retiring CoF, all Head Coroners, and all Coroners, with the additional option to vote for "none of the above".
- If instead of a candidate this option receives the largest number of votes, further candidates can within seven days be named by all MFU members holding the rank of Junior Pathologist or above, which results in CoF, Head Coroners, and Coroners voting on the CoF succession once again.
- In the unlikely event of a tie, the retiring CoF decides for one of the candidates.
- Should the Chief of Forensics become inactive without previous notice and not log in for more than two weeks, he is automatically retired (receiving the rank of rCoF).
- Once this happens, all members holding the rank of Junior Pathologist or above may for seven days name replacement candidates, which are afterwards voted on by all Head Coroners and Coroners.
- In the unlikely event of a tie, the candidates that scored the same and largest number of votes are voted on once again. Should this again result in a tie, the poll is repeated, with the difference that all members holding the rank of Junior Pathologist or above are now eligible to vote. Should a tie be reached once more, the DEM Chairman is asked to make the decision.
- CoF candidates must at least be of Coroner rank, the running time of all polls is one week.
Head Coroner (HC)
The Head Coroner (HC) is in charge of one division, and appoints and commands the Coroners in this division.
- Head Coroners shall have a minimum of 18 levels of training with the MFU.
- Head Coroners shall monitor their division's Academy campus graduation thread and assign new MFU graduates to a district or team.
- Head Coroners shall be responsible for maintaining their division's information on official rosters and on this page.
- If one or more districts within a division have no Coroner, the Head Coroner shall clarify the district's chain of command for any personnel in that district, either by designating an acting commander or by accepting direct reports from Pathologists in that district, filling the vacant Coroner position.
Head Coroners are members of the DEM Council and have access to the Regional Command forum and the MFU Officers forum.
Head Coroners report to the Chief of Forensics.
Coroner (CR)
The Coroner (CR) is in charge of one district, and commands the Senior Pathologists in it.
- Coroners shall have a minimum of 12 levels of training with the MFU.
- Coroners shall organize the Senior Pathologists, Junior Pathologists, and Lab Technicians within their district.
- Coroners may appoint a Senior Pathologist for each suburb under their command, to the extent that current staffing allows.
- If one or more suburbs within a district have no Senior Pathologist, the Coroner shall clarify the suburb's chain of command for any personnel in that suburb, either by designating a team leader or by accepting direct reports from Junior Pathologists and Lab Technicians in that suburb, filling the vacant Senior Pathologist position.
- Sometimes, a Coroner may not be assigned to a district but instead to a mobile team operating throughout a division, in which case he is responsible for that team instead of a district and shall command it.
Coroners have access to the Regional Command forum and the MFU Officers forum.
Coroners report to their division's Head Coroner.
Senior Pathologist (SP)
The Senior Pathologist (SP) is in charge of one suburb, and commands any MFU personnel in it.
- Pathologists shall have at minimum 8 levels of training with the MFU.
- Pathologists shall be responsible for establishing order and accountability in their suburb.
- Pathologists are given latitude in organizing the Junior Pathologists and Lab Technicians within their suburb.
- Sometimes, a Senior Pathologist may not be assigned to a suburb but instead to a mobile team, in which case, unless the team has a Coroner, he is responsible for that team instead of a suburb and shall command it.
Senior Pathologists have access to the MFU Officers forum.
Senior Pathologists report to their district's Coroner, or to their division's Head Coroner if the district has no Coroner assigned.
Junior Pathologist (JP)
The Junior Pathologist (JP) is originally in charge of a NecroTech building or revivification point, though strict assignment to a single NT rarely occurs. In exceptional cases, graduating cadets may immediately reach this rank by passing with honors from The Academy.
- Although Junior Pathologist is an officer rank, Junior Pathologists and Lab Technicians often are both of equal grade. Junior Pathologists have a higher rank and sometimes different duties, but ordinarily do not issue orders to Lab Technicians. Possible exceptions to this rule:
- In the Senior Pathologist's absence, the Coroner or Head Coroner may designate a Junior Pathologist to serve as commanding officer.
- The Senior Pathologist or, if no Senior Pathologist has been assigned, Coroner may designate a Junior Pathologist to be the commanding officer at a well-staffed revive point, NecroTech building, or similar location.
- The Senior Pathologist, or, if no Senior Pathologist has been assigned, Coroner may designate a Junior Pathologist to serve as a team leader or mission commander.
Junior Pathologists have access to the MFU Officers forum.
Junior Pathologists report to their suburb's Senior Pathologist, or to their district's Coroner or division's Head Coroner if the suburb has no Senior Pathologist assigned.
Lab Technician (LT)
The Lab Technician (LT) is the entry-level rank in the MFU. New members automatically receive this rank.
Lab Technicians report to their suburb's Senior Pathologist, or to their district's Coroner or division's Head Coroner if the suburb has no Pathologist assigned.
Retired Personnel
rCoF, rHC, rCR, rSP, rJP
When retiring from full-time duty, command and officer personnel may request a retired rank, with which they may continue to be part of the MFU, retaining official member status and forum access. Retired members are distinguished by the addition of "ret." to the highest rank they held at the time they had been active. Although being exempt from reporting requirements, they are strongly encouraged to log in and report as time allows. Retired members are sometimes assigned only to a division and not to a specific district, suburb, or team, but may attach themselves to a district or suburb crew on a temporary or semi-permanent basis.
The following retired ranks are available:
- ret. Chief of Forensics (rCoF)
- ret. Head Coroner (rHC)
- ret. Coroner (rCR)
- ret. Senior Pathologist (rSP)
- ret. Junior Pathologist (rJP)
Retired members may return to full-time duty upon request filed with the Chief of Forensics or with the Head Coroner of the division in which the retired member wishes to be assigned. Because they retain their forum access, retired members do not need to file a reinstatement request in the public returning members thread of the DEM.
Merits and Ribbons
The Department of Emergency Management has a series of DEM Merits and Ribbons it issues to members who display mastery over key skills. The ribbons can be claimed by any member with the profficiency of the skills entailed. Summary of these ribbons and the means to claim them can be found on the DEM Merits and Ribbons page.
