20081016 Useless Use for the Crucifix

William Told 21:12, 16 October 2008 (BST)

Suggestion type
Item use, Flavor

Suggestion scope
Survivors, People who are sick of crucifix-related suggestions, Evangelists

Suggestion description
Let's take a look at the crucifix. As in real life, carrying one around on your person in UD does absolutely nothing but leave you with less room to carry other things around. It wouldn't even make a decent bludgeon. But despite the fact that it's entirely reasonable that it not have a use, the crucifix appears on the suggestions page again and again. People try to assign it mystical or divine qualities that act as anti-zombie shields, assuming that everyone will share their assumption that teh evil zmobies fear Jebus; they try to make it "inspire" survivors to perform feats they would otherwise be incapable of; they try to give it some sort of divine smiting powers; they've even tried to make it block bullets!

No more! I propose that the crucifix be used as a weapon in a manner similar to the newspaper: Attacking with a crucifix will cost 1 AP and inflict 0 damage at a 100% hit rate. The attacker will receive a message similar to, "You wave your crucifix at (target)." or "You wave your crucifix at (target) for 0 damage." The target will receive a message such as, "(attacker) waved a crucifix at you." The text may be altered to be more or less flavorful depending on Kevan's wishes. Some flavor text was considered, but I believe neutral text would result in less hate mail from Christians for Kevan to sift through. The neutral flavor also allows its use to be interpreted differently by different players.

This suggestion gives the crucifix a use while it retains its definitively useless value, discouraging future crucifix-related suggestions by filling the perceived void in its non-use. It would also be fun for anyone who wants to RP as a crazy preacher/Christian, a Christian who is clinging to their beliefs in this apocalyptic setting, or any other character who might want to wave a stick with a little man nailed to it at someone. Furthermore, people who RP as super-serious religious types or do not wish to use their crucifixes may simply abstain from waving them at people and not be affected by it.

This suggestion is not a dupe. It does not involve any spiritual/mystical/divine powers and does not affect a player's effectiveness in any way. It would simply be fun and interesting, and it might discourage people from suggesting the overused magic crucifix suggestions.

Thanks to everyone who helped flesh this out and raised good points in the discussion page.

Kill Votes

  1. Kill - If you're going to give it a use, give it a use that's at least partially useful. Otherwise we'll see the same "change the crucifix/crucifix update" suggestions regardless. If anything, I think it should have the same effect as a length of pipe, in the sense that you could jam it between door handles and keep back the zombies for a few more minutes. Otherwise, there's really no point in changing it at all. And no, it doesn't really add RP. People don't wave crucifixes at zombies in zombie movies, nor could I see someone doing so in real life. --Kikashie Read the Dispatch! 10:06, 19 October 2008 (BST)
  2. Kill - Mostly as Iscariot. No special treatment. --  AHLGTG THE END IS NIGH! 18:49, 22 October 2008 (BST)
  3. d00m in teh Apocakypse. - I honestly do not care. Hm, Could zombies not use it? So, Why can't I try to kill people with it? Or nail it people, Perhaps their HAND? Hey, Maybe I could toss it at the zombies. Nail it to/hang it on a wall. Psst, this is largely irrelevant, This isn't a game of religion; It's about the Zombies.
    lol
Attack the zombie. 00:55, 22 October 2008 (BST)

Spam/Dupe Votes

  1. Spam - There should be no use for the crucifix period. Why can you wave a crucifix at someone and not a fencing foil? Or a beer? Or a stuffed monkey? Giving this item any fucking use is empowerment to delusional fuckwits, the same people who've stifled academic and scientific progress for years. We have plenty of religious characters in the game who don't have religious symbols to wave and who can roleplay around this. No special treatment for crucifixes. -- To know the face of God is to know madness....Praise knowledge! Mischief! Mayhem! The Rogues Gallery!. <== DDR Approved Editor 11:28, 17 October 2008 (BST)
  2. Spam - Just encourages further useless ideas for an already useless flavour item -- boxy talkteh rulz 11:27 19 October 2008 (BST)
I disagree. Giving it a use (waving it at people) would prevent new players from picking one up and saying, "WTF? Why can't I use this? Maybe I should suggest a totally awesome, kickass use for it! Like, maybe you can use it to kill zombies! Of course, everyone knows zombies are afraid of crosses! You know, like in Dracula. I'm gonna do it right now without paying attention to the proper format!" --William Told 17:37, 19 October 2008 (BST)
