Election
So, canvassing and intimidation are working fairly well. We should make a campaign promise to PK everyone who votes against us, whaddaya think? ;) ᚱᛁᚹᛖᚾᚨᚾᛏ 13:11, 3 July 2010 (BST)

- Also, with compatibility mode, it's too far to the left. :P I'll vote for you if you give me Home Secretary of Malton, without the silly signature thing. I care far more for titles than I do for a ranking list.--Yonnua Koponen Talk ! Contribs 17:29, 4 July 2010 (BST)
- Deal. I also expect you to sort out housing issues. That's what home secretaries do right? 17:30, 4 July 2010 (BST)
- Nope, Immigration. So, realistically, I'll have a pretty cushy job. Now, the election decides whether my title is Home Secretary or Shadow Home Secretary.--Yonnua Koponen Talk ! Contribs 17:31, 4 July 2010 (BST)

- He actually asked about it in advance and I think the consensus was that people were either indifferent or okay with it, given that the + shouldn't be used if you want to follow the guidelines of his page. —Aichon— 08:24, 10 July 2010 (BST)
- Page guidelines are of debatable enforceability, especially compared to breaking wiki functionality, and the reason I noticed was because it's actually always present even when you scroll down and thus obscures page elements further down the page.
I'm not overly fussed about this one compared to others, just wanted to make sure – and it's a good thing he checked first (though I will read your link to see what exactly the arguments were ;)). That said, there are a few about that are definitely nowhere near as benign as this, and I intend to attempt to eradicate them where I see them. :D Cheers! ᚱᛁᚹᛖᚾᚨᚾᛏ 08:42, 10 July 2010 (BST)- Hmm...I hadn't noticed the scrolling issue previously, but you're completely correct. And definitely read the link! As for enforceability, that wasn't what I was getting at. I was citing that as his "pressing reason" for doing it, which would give him the reason he needed to break wiki functionality, as you put it. Plus, later versions of wiki software allow you to remove that link outright, so if the wiki were upgraded, this would be a non-issue since it's a feature of the software itself. —Aichon— 08:48, 10 July 2010 (BST)

I don't know how to block the "+" any other way though. Also you seem to have the same problem I used to - your sig totally doesn't look like it does in your image when I view it, it's just plain text. 21:42, 10 July 2010 (BST)

- Apparently you lack the Cochin font as well, so you're falling back on Arial for my sig. Cochin comes standard with Office, I thought, but I may very well be incorrect about that. It makes a BIG difference in how mine appears though. Arial is so heavy-handed compared to the elegance of Cochin. —Aichon— 03:52, 11 July 2010 (BST)

yo yo yo , I wanted to clear up what i'd said on a/bp cause I didn't want you thinking i consider you a bad ssyop. I vote aichon and i said you let personal opinions override your better judgement as an op, I hope you don't take this personally. I don't meant you're a bad op, in fact, I think you're one of the best at the moment, particularly your presence in the entire place, if only we'd had that back in early 09. Either way, don't take what I said personally plz, it's only a critical analysis of the ops and while I maintain what I said it true I don't expect you to consider it a bad form, off hand comment. Just a heads up that I do respect you, especially knowing that at my worst I'm not any better. Or any soberere.

'Play Dead (and Invisible)'
I've typed up an even more elaborate version of my 'Play Dead' tactic for PKers/death cultists (see here), that goes beyond the obvious application for those types of characters (which would be to 'Play Dead' outside the nearest entry point to the target, for AP efficiency reasons, I suppose). You probably have more experience than most in this field, could you gave my concept a read, please, and let me know what you think? Thanks --BOSCH 22:34, 23 July 2010 (BST)

- Why would you delete your group if it tanks? Mine tanked after a while, but I love the memories and the pages. Either ways, mass-deleting is the easiest mass-thing to do, the button for "delete" is almost always in the same spot on the page so all you have to do is "ctrl+tab" and click the "deletes" as fast as you can. Easy sailing. --
- Exactly. You can be done in just a few minutes with dozens and dozens of pages. Of course, if you supply a reason for deletion, even a c/p one, it takes longer since that involves an extra mouse move per deletion, which adds a surprising amount of additional time. —Aichon— 11:46, 26 July 2010 (BST)

A question
Greetings, oh once and future Mayor, er...once and briefly Mayor...er....well. Ahem. Anyway-I have a question. I happened to run across a new player who is forming a fledgling zombie group and he asked me so I thought I might forward it to you (since I am a lotech luddite with the keyboarding skills of a trained chimp) To wit and I quote: "Thank you! Yes, my son explained the alt-abuse thing to me after the first weekend of playing. I try to keep all my alts in separate areas. I have one each of the four basic classes, but I've only made character pages for three so far. How do I add my Menagerie group page to the list of groups? I tried to edit the Zombie Groups page to add the link, but when I click edit, I only see the first couple of sentences for the page, not any of the alphabetized link lists.--scubamatt 17:41, 27 July 2010 (BST) Hmmm-that is a good question! Think I will forward it to see if I can get you a quick answer. Misanthropy is often helpful so I will toss it his way.--Belisarius17 18:26, 27 July 2010 (BST) I did not know why so I was wondering if there is a simple reason that I am not seeing? Thought I would ask for him to expedite the process. Regards and Thanks--Belisarius17 18:38, 27 July 2010 (BST)

Discussion
Thoughts on this? The precedent would be this if it was Misconduct.--User:Yonnua Koponen/signature2 17:40, 6 August 2010 (BST)
- I noticed it as well. You're not suppose to edit a protected page unless it's a necessary administrative edit, otherwise it's abuse of sysops power. --Thadeous Oakley 17:54, 6 August 2010 (BST)
- You agree? I'm thinking of taking it to A/M, pending Mis' response here.--User:Yonnua Koponen/signature2 17:55, 6 August 2010 (BST)
- Technically? Yeah, you have a case if you ask me. In the spirit of the rules it's misconduct. But, it may very well be a mistake. I don't know exactly how it works as a sysops, but maybe he didn't realize it was protected and thus it was an accident. But even on purpose, it's slap on the wrist/soft warning material considering the content, though actual misconduct if you're strict. In my opinion. --Thadeous Oakley 18:13, 6 August 2010 (BST)
- Well, that's why I'm asking his opinion. When you edit a protected page, a giant red notice appears, so mistakes are unlikely, but even if it was, in the SA precedent I linked he claimed it was a mistake.--User:Yonnua Koponen/signature2 18:32, 6 August 2010 (BST)
- I'm aware SA claimed it as a mistake, that's why I left that accident option open. I didn't know about red notice your talking about, though it still leaves the option he didn't know it wasn't allowed. Which is the most likely case scenario here then, unless he knew it wasn't allowed, but Mis is better than that so I doubt it. --Thadeous Oakley 18:38, 6 August 2010 (BST)
- I actually didn't notice it being protected at the time, I was just responding to Poodle. 21:59, 6 August 2010 (BST)
- There's also a difference in the nature of the posts. After all, calling them a penis is not exactly the same as writing a frowny face. —Aichon— 22:01, 6 August 2010 (BST)
- Both are trolling comments which were unnecessary. However, Mis has a history of making stupid errors when posting (e.g. newbie welcomes on user pages instead of talks) so I'm willing to give him the benefit of the doubt with this one.--User:Yonnua Koponen/signature2 22:06, 6 August 2010 (BST)
- If you still think it's Misconduct, Thad, feel free to take it to Misconduct anyway, but I doubt the case will be successful.--User:Yonnua Koponen/signature2 22:07, 6 August 2010 (BST)
- I wasn't trolling this time (and you know I'd admit if I was). I was genuinely dismayed at losing a valuable laughing stock and wanted Poodle to know I wasn't just kidding about it. And i r not stoopid. :( 22:08, 6 August 2010 (BST)
- Minus the part about Poodle, that's how I read it, especially given your vote in the permaban and the comment with it. —Aichon— 22:22, 6 August 2010 (BST)
- Still, if he'd known it was protected, it would be misconduct, and that's the important thing.--User:Yonnua Koponen/signature2 22:23, 6 August 2010 (BST)
- Minus the part about Poodle, that's how I read it, especially given your vote in the permaban and the comment with it. —Aichon— 22:22, 6 August 2010 (BST)
- Hey now, why do get the live grenade/hot potato thrown into my hands? I don't and didn't have the intention of bringing this to misconduct, merely stating that it could be brought. Personally speaking, nothing more then soft warning, and not worthy of true misconduct. Dealing with this through his talk page is best and that's what happened. @Aichon, trolling or not, it was unnecessary and therefore abuse whether intentional or not. Also, the edit in question should probably be reverted if it hasn't been already. --Thadeous Oakley 22:28, 6 August 2010 (BST)
- Edit conflicted.--Thadeous Oakley 22:28, 6 August 2010 (BST)

- Oh, I agree that it was not right for him to post it, don't get me wrong, and I briefly considered A/Ming him over it as well, before deciding it wasn't worth it (it wasn't until later that I saw this stuff here). As you said, soft warning is all that's really necessary. And yeah, it should be reverted...off to do that. —Aichon— 23:00, 6 August 2010 (BST)

- I've had a look and I can't see an easy fix for it. If you'd like I could manually code the box with alterations to make it fit better, as it seems the problem is due to the cells being equally spaced instead of skewed to one side as would be preferred. 18:04, 8 August 2010 (BST)
- Yeah,... I'm okay with that. To be honest, I tried to steal the code from the Groupbox Template, to manually edit it,... but couldn't make heads or tails of the sizing and spacing, or where it was even at in the code. I figured I'd just screw it up and make it worse, so instead of screwing around for 15 to 20 minutes, just to hit the same brick wall, I just cut my losses and asked for help. If you're up to giving me the code, I'd be happy to implement it, and if it works the way I like, I'll create a new group template for that spot. -∞ Poodle of Doom ∞ 18:09, 8 August 2010 (BST)
Thanks for your help. I greatly appreciate it! -∞ Poodle of Doom ∞ 19:19, 8 August 2010 (BST)
- You should also be able to change the colours in that quite easily. That version uses the original colour words, though I prefer to use hex for colours. User:Misanthropy/MainKnight uses pretty much the same coding for that box in its character box, to show you how it might look with alternate colouring. 19:21, 8 August 2010 (BST)
I just have to ask... what do you think of our new layout? -∞ Poodle of Doom ∞ 01:50, 9 August 2010 (BST)
- Everything looks grand except for the blue on grey, it's quite hard to make out. 01:52, 9 August 2010 (BST)
- What color would you suggest? -∞ Poodle of Doom ∞ 02:18, 9 August 2010 (BST)
- Just a different shade. Either a darker blue, or a lighter grey. 02:22, 9 August 2010 (BST)
- I'll probably use a darker blue... just because I wanted the links blue, like the standard links,... so people would know they were links. -∞ Poodle of Doom ∞ 02:29, 9 August 2010 (BST)
- I meant lighten the background grey so there's more contrast and the blue stands out better. 02:33, 9 August 2010 (BST)

You might be interested that the new user that you welcomed, Barry bonds, has done nothing but vandalizing my entries to insult me. I'm sure he is BarryBonds756, a Pitneybank PKer whom I've been in conflict with. Looks like he couldn't find me in-game, so he pathetically attacked me on the Wiki instead.
I'll just revert back the vandalism and leave his case to your judgment. -- Kittithaj 04:17, 9 August 2010 (BST)
- Bring it to A/VB, don't take it to a specific sysop as there's nothing we can do outside of the system except revert damage.

Instead of grabbing popcorn, why don't you try telling him his case has no grounds whatsoever and will likely fail, as pretty much any experienced wiki member can tell?--Thadeous Oakley 19:44, 10 August 2010 (BST)
- Technically if the layout thing is correct he does have grounds, as this wiki does not use any form of creative commons license. But that's all he could get changed realistically, though if he pursues it he'll probably be able to force a change. 19:52, 10 August 2010 (BST)
- Bull. Half the groups on this wiki have copied templates of each other. You could force him to add a notice saying you made the layout, you can force him to remove text you wrote or images you made. Other than that, nothing.--User:Yonnua Koponen/signature2 19:54, 10 August 2010 (BST)
- Yes but find me another example of a user demanding that their intellectual property is enforced (bar Izzy's deletion requests). Other stealing has been done on the assumption that it's been allowed, this case clearly isn't. 19:56, 10 August 2010 (BST)

- Actually it is. 19:57, 10 August 2010 (BST)
- No, because it isn't a creative medium. It's limited precisely by the designer of the hard and software available. Therefore there are a precise number of designs and circumstances. If it's anyone's intellectual property, it belongs to the designer, not to somebody who nipped over and fiddled with it.--User:Yonnua Koponen/signature2 21:32, 10 August 2010 (BST)

- How exactly is he obtaining money from the usage of this page? Because of course, if he isn't, then it isn't being used in commerce, and so it isn't intellectual property infringement, even if a common wiki design could be considered to be IP.--User:Yonnua Koponen/signature2 21:48, 10 August 2010 (BST)
- Strange, then, how both ipo.gov.uk (cf unregistered community design) and everything else I'm turning up explicitly state that design falls under the criteria, and mentions nothing about the sole use in commerce. As it stands, we either comb through every piece of UK law to find what applies here (and I'm leaning towards what I'm getting on ipo.gov.uk), or we follow the disclaimer on every edit box on the wiki, which reads: "You are also promising us that you wrote this yourself, or copied it from a public domain or similar free resource", something obviously not the case here. 22:03, 10 August 2010 (BST)

WIPO. Also, the Copyright, Designs and Patents Act 1988, Britain's source of copyright law, says that "Names, titles, short phrases and colours are not generally considered unique or substantial enough to be covered". As it stands, the only similarities are that the page is black, has red text, a red border, and an image at the top. Wow, it must be stolen. And since that is the actual law, of this country, it's pretty definite. Or we go by international law as per my other link. The wiki text was not written by any legal professional, so that's a pathetically weak argument.--User:Yonnua Koponen/signature2 22:08, 10 August 2010 (BST)
- I again refer you to the English government's own site linked above, wherein "The overall appearance of the design" is protected, which if you look at both pages, is nigh-identical, down to sizing, positioning, scheme and thematic content. 22:11, 10 August 2010 (BST)
- Also, here's a list of everything covered under the act: +
- Literary - Song lyrics, manuscripts, manuals, computer programs, commercial documents, leaflets, newsletters and articles etc.
- Dramatic - Plays, dance, etc.
- Musical - Recordings and score.
- Artistic - Photography, painting, architecture, technical drawings/diagrams, maps, logos, etc.
- Typographical arrangement of published editions - Magazines, periodicals, etc.
- Sound recordings - May be recordings of works, e.g. musical and literary.
- Films - Broadcasts and cable programmes.
Doesn't actually cover page designs or formats. I assumed it was under artistic, but it isn't.--User:Yonnua Koponen/signature2 22:14, 10 August 2010 (BST)
- and I shouldn't have to explain this to you, but a statute kind of takes more importance than some sketchy government website. You know, it being the law and all, and that website being made by some dopey civil servant.--User:Yonnua Koponen/signature2 22:14, 10 August 2010 (BST)
- A 1988 statute can hardly be expected to cover a situation dealing with technology unconceivable at the time and can hardly be considered an exhaustive list. Position listed states:
- "S1(2) of the Registered Designs Act 1949 defines a design as “the appearance of the whole or part of a product resulting from the features of, in particular, the lines, contours, colours, shape, texture or materials of the product or its ornamentation”.
- The “product” you have designed can be anything such as an industrial or handicraft item (other than a computer program), and, in particular, can include things like packaging, get-up, graphic symbols, typographic typefaces, and parts of products intended to be assembled into a more complex product."
- Which seems to me to cover what's going on here, applying the general limitations as opposed to a limited list of specifics compiled before this situation could ever have been conceived of by anyone. 22:20, 10 August 2010 (BST)
- well you yourself rendered that useless by starting your post with:

- You're both wrong. Redirect rights have little to do with who made them. If I wanted to, right now I could have EVIL unprotected and made a disambig, regardless of the hundreds of links Doodle has thrown at it under the guise of his own group, and regardless of him making it, because regardless of all that effort, it's not his group and it's an abbreviation for a now multiple used term. Regarding Thad, he does have a right to some of them, if the likely search string is more directed at that group's name. Hence why I reverted his redirects that were closer to your Umbrella, and left the ones closer to his. -- 04:50, 11 August 2010 (BST)

*Adding my 2¢* From what I understand of American law (and no, I'm not suggesting it applies across the pond; I'm merely offering another take on the matter), usually designs can be patented and trademarked, not copyrighted, though artwork involved in a design, such as icons, backgrounds, textures, etc. can be copyrighted. Even when you're patenting a design, however, you usually just patent the layout. You can also apply trademark to it, however, as was seen when T-Mobile either issued a C&D or sued, I believe, Engadget a few years back because Engadget's mobile tech blog was using a color of pink that they thought was too similar to their own trademark shade of pink. That said, patents and trademarks must be filed in order to be enforceable, and with copyrights, while they are enforceable immediately upon the artwork's creation, unless they're registered with your local copyright office, the most you can do is issue a C&D. You can't even file for any damages until they're registered. Also, you both are idiots for arguing about it so much. —Aichon— 03:54, 11 August 2010 (BST)
- "artwork involved in a design, such as icons, backgrounds, textures, etc." are the only things applicable in British law. Read links above.--User:Yonnua Koponen/signature2 10:11, 11 August 2010 (BST)
- Not true. As your own links say, there are plenty of other forms of intellectual property which are not covered under copyright yet still receive protections in other forms (e.g. patents and trademarks), and they give examples as well. Almost all of your discussion above revolved around copyrights and examples for them. I was saying that even though copyright may not apply to designs, patents or trademarks still might, and I haven't seen anything in your links that disagrees with that assertion. In fact, from what I can tell, UK law (as US law) is one of the few that currently upholds software patents, which would be a basis for this sort of thing. Again though, as I said, patents and trademarks wouldn't matter here anyway, since none were filed or registered. Copyright is the only one that provides an automatic protection on the work, and we all agree that it doesn't apply to the design, regardless of which country's law you're using. —Aichon— 10:31, 11 August 2010 (BST)
- I may be mistaken, but I think the 92 act is the last relevant act for the three. If it doesn't say anything about it, it's probably allowed. Either way, it's a contentious issue which could probably be argued either way in court.--User:Yonnua Koponen/signature2 10:37, 11 August 2010 (BST)
- Plus, there's a big difference from what you and I might read out of the books, and what skilled lawyers have already read out of them, argued, and gotten put into practice in common law countries such as ours. I prefer going to sites such as Wikipedia for their synopsis of how some of these laws are actually being practiced today. —Aichon— 11:02, 11 August 2010 (BST)

Thought you'd like to know
It looks like your sig might be one of the ones causing issues for A/VB (the current month's archive isn't showing up on it since it has too much inclusion data), since it's a decent amount larger than the norm. This isn't a warning to fix it or anything of the sort, merely a friendly notification, since I figured you'd want to be aware of something like this. What you do with this info is your call. My best guess is that it's the images causing the issues, since the other big culprit was DDR's sig with the arrow images in it. —Aichon— 06:44, 30 August 2010 (BST)
- Is it just the overall size of the sig? I can cut it down by 25% today since the Malties don't need the advertising I guess. 13:26, 30 August 2010 (BST)
You can use Template:ClickInternal for the images now. Good news is that it works (thank Aichon), bad news is that it's weighty so using it several times like now will probably still be a bit much. Also you have to use it because I said so. -- RoosterDragon 07:18, 1 September 2010 (BST)
- Rooster figured out the hard stuff that took trial and error. I just copy/pasted some code from somewhere else and tweaked it a bit. But yeah, the new code works in IE7, whereas the old code causes each image to get its own line in IE7, which is bad juju. And it's new! And spiffy! Did I mention it was new? —Aichon— 07:32, 1 September 2010 (BST)

- Yeah, the 'top three' really means 'top three positions', so ties are considered in the nominees. I'm listing it all now. 16:16, 31 August 2010 (BST)
While I'm here
Have you seen this yet? Check the code for it. I've designed it from the ground up to be modifiable by anyone without needing any extra templates or anything (and the template that generates it all is actually remarkably light). Basically, anyone can create as many styles as they want, name them whatever they want, and then can apply them to whichever suburbs they want. They can also stylize the entire table however they want (though it has some preset defaults), and they can nest it into tables or divs however they want so that it fits on the page better. Basically, it could probably be used as a replacement for pretty much every minimap of the city that has ever existed or ever will on the wiki. With your wikimapping interest, I figured I'd point it out. —Aichon— 07:37, 1 September 2010 (BST)

- If you want to keep the stuff hidden and still share it online, Google-Docs along with invitations might be a solution. Of course, it can't preview wiki code straight, but is probably the most handy solution short of running and password-protecting your own wiki in a different corner of the net. -- Spiderzed▋ 18:23, 8 September 2010 (BST)

I may not be able to make it to a ceremony, so Mis, if you're planning on doing one, do ya think you could you make a note about the donation during the broadcast? - It's totally possible. Just needs careful planning. Look at the big zombie hordes. If they thinned a bit they'd cover more ground without much overall loss in anything but speed. If the balance of actual players and not just mrh-cow padding was to change, it'd be easily concievable. 22:51, 15 September 2010 (BST)
- It's the speed that makes them so deadly, since they can wipe out infrastructure before repairs can take place. Spread them out and they move slowly enough that repairs happen right after they leave. It is possible, though, I think, to get, say, 70-30 with the current hordes fairly easily, if they just coordinated their efforts and moved in specific patterns. There are certain strategies that apply to horde movement which have significant impact on survivor populations (e.g. go in a spiral towards the middle to cause maximum damage, devastate everything around a survivor stronghold to retard reinforcement efforts, double back over recent repairs to ruin reinforcements and break morale). BB3 actually recently did that first one, which is a large part of why the entire Northwest got ruined recently. MOB did the same thing around Christmas time last year, which resulted in the SE getting wrecked, and both RRF and MOB had devastated the Pitneybank area right before that (i.e. point #2), which utterly gutted the survivor's strongest point in the eastern half of the city, leading to revive queues that were lasting for weeks. If they coordinated a bit to cut off lines of reinforcement and moved quickly, RRF, MOB, and BB3 could eat the city alive, but they'd never do it, and it's for the best of the game that they don't. —Aichon— 06:08, 16 September 2010 (BST)
- Oh I'm not saying thinning the crowd out too much, obviously. But the three major hordes (four if you want to count BB3 but it'll not be around forever), if working in unison, could easily tackle 4-5 suburbs at a time, rather than 3, which gives a 33% raise in the actual area being attacked at a given time. It's also a case of logistics if the smaller hordes were to get on board, having the smaller hordes attacking areas with a lower block:building ratio, or building:TRP ratio, and especially targetting the SW-2 district with a concerted, but small, rotter contingent (one NT for the district can easily be pinataed, then camped in by more angry rotters than can be readily dealt with by a relief force that's being worn down through revive deprivation). Active co-operation between the hordes and the larger PKer groups could easily lead to a quicker demise, as the ability to scout inside, and clear TRPs quickly from the inside (especially the ever-contested forts and malls) only accelerates things. Of course, this is a game of ego more than anything else, and that level of co-operation is beyond reaching, so it's pretty much going to boil down to whichever side has the more tenacious players - give it two to three years, and I'd say the zombies, with players who average out to be much more thick-skinned about the whole thing, will be much more dominant. 06:19, 16 September 2010 (BST)
