(===Status Reports===)

Hello^^, I'm Gogomouse. I've been using the radio daily to inform anyone on 26.34. I had a neat idea to finally sign up with the wiki and update the status. I think you are the one that runs this page correct? I can give a daily report of the mall from here on out since you mentioned that nobody has given a report in two weeks. Soo.. with that said I still dont know how to change the happy face picture. ; ; Zombies are eating us but I dont know the numbers that are outside. The status pictures are very specific from x number to y number. How do I update it and how do I choose the correct one? - 1930hrs July 11, 2010.

I was wondering if you could help me...

Right, so I'm bored at the moment. I don't really have much to do on the wiki, save the occasional orphaned page. So, I thought, what needs doing on the wiki? Location block demerging came to mind, and as a result, so did you.[/preamble]

Basically, I was wondering how one goes about demerging location blocks? I have nothing better to do, so I was just wondering, as I may set about doing some in my spare time.--Yonnua Koponen Talk ! Contribs 10:27, 13 March 2010 (UTC)

Large Barricade Plan Template

Hello RED! Noticed some of the nice work you've done around the wiki and thought you might be able to lend a hand with something I've been playing with off and on in my sandbox for a while-- a large version of the barricade plan template. Not quite as big as the map you have in your sandbox, but similar in size requirements.

The idea was to take the individual barricade plans for a district in Malton and combine them into one nice table so you could get the ideal barricade situation for an entire district. Also tried to get it set up such that if the plan for a suburb changed, the district plan would automatically reflect that. Over the course of a couple months work and talking with Rooster, we got that much figured out. It still looks pretty rough though, so wondering if maybe you had thoughts on how to spruce it up so it looks nice and neat before implementation for all 20 districts of Malton. --Maverick Talk - OBR Praise Knowledge! 404 18:31, 26 September 2009 (BST)

My idea was to make one for each district. I think that one large barricade plan map for the entirety of Malton would be so large that most people would be unable to even view it. Adding the key to the bottom is easy, the problem I've been having is the sizing--as you might have noticed the different suburbs have differently sized tables. Later this week I'm hoping to play around with the height and width values in the suburb tables and see if that remedies the problem. Once I get a common size among those tables, then I can shrink the size of the district table a little bit. If you think of an easier way of doing it, let me know! --Maverick Talk - OBR Praise Knowledge! 404 18:24, 28 September 2009 (BST)
I had noticed that many of the suburb barricade plans were not templated. I had to deal with that for the five suburbs I started with. It's honestly a rather minor fix, but certainly one that we will have to deal with once we get the design down and start applying it to the other districts. I'll toy around with some minor fixes to the suburb templates to see if that fixes the sizing problem, otherwise I'll contact DDR and see if she has any ideas. But I'll keep you in the loop if you're interested. --Maverick Talk - OBR Praise Knowledge! 404 01:58, 29 September 2009 (BST)

Well yes; assuming there are multiple authors or someone takes over the page, then it gets complicated and A/SD would sort out whether the others want it gone; the idea behind this is simply to ease the red tape on removing one-off flukes, never-got-off-the-runway groups, and other newer pages the author decides they don't want. That, and to address the apparent concern over inclusions being deleted.--~ Red Hawk One Talk | space for lease 22:39, 20 December 2009 (UTC)

In-Game

necrowatch blindspot

Thanks for the encouragement. I was starting to use necrowatch a lot in the past week because eastern Rhodenbank is just a mess with the zombie incursion from Dulston and it became a matter of habit that I check necrowatch to scout ahead. I figured I might as well update the buildings that I travel through too to help other survivors. Nothing is more frustrating than seeing on the wiki that the building is "safe" a week ago then free-running with your last AP into a ruined building with 10 active zombies Oo. I will probably hang around Rhodenbank area or within one suburb radius for the near future ... see you around OO Willie 10:55, 21 October 2009 (GMT+8)

Update - I got your informative broadcast today and I just scrounged a gen and fuel can in Earletown . Originally I am going to get back to st alfred's to power it up but if eastern rhodenbank needs it I can be there in 12hrs as I tapped out my APs looking for that gen (-_-). --OO Willie 04:08, 22 October 2009 (BST)
Update - Oh ok, sometimes I forget to add the sig. I'll probably wind my way slowly back to east rhodenbank to pick up more fuel, gen and medkits. Do you know if pullinger repair shop in Earletown is still up? Last time I was there is 10-11 days ago and it was okay.--OO Willie 04:08, 22 October 2009 (BST)

Whitlock building in Dulston just became my grave ... I was dumb to stay alone in strategic buildings inside a hot zone and Dead Animal parachuted in and lit me up like a christmas tree before proceeding to turn the building into a pinata. He have since reverted to his zombie status and we are still inside the building ... may just annoy him by smashing down the barricades before leaving for a revive point in Rhodenbank. --OO Willie 13:40, 4 November 2009 (UTC)

Just got an update from Lazerwolf, looks like Rhodenbank is gutted like a fish. Hope you made it out okay. I am currently in Rolt Heights around Lovell auto repair and St Hermann hospital. I got 3 revive syringes, 10 medkits and a fuel can. I am probably going to head to the factory and police station @ southwestern part of Rolt Heights to scrounge for a generator and ammo before heading to the suburbs that the MOB just smashed to rebuild. See you around --OO Willie 12:43, 12 November 2009 (UTC)

a naked man

Yes, it's him. So the racist troll is spamming Santlerville radio from Rhodenbank. How brave. Feel free to blow his head off until he shuts up/runs away/quits the game for good. I've heard someone said he was leaving the game because of all those racist remarks. The troll must pay for that.

By the way, another racist accomplice of his (or maybe even his alt) is Jack Heins, here. This is one broadcast I heard myself. He doesn't only spam the radio, but also the Wiki as well. And he is blocked indefinitely for that. Santlerville, and ultimately Malton, would be better without those two.

P.S. I'm starting to think my updates to the Great Radio Messages have been spams and insults a lot lately. Perhaps I am too easily amused, or too fond of dark humor and sarcasm. And as a result, my entries aren't that "great." What do you think about them? -- Kittithaj 21:08, 26 October 2009 (UTC)

I see. Looks like it's time to raise my standard a bit on what's funny and what's stupid. The Radio Jihad in particular is being dragged out too long, it gets repetitive. And people of Santlerville seem to think of the same thing. Time to let go of that one.
P.S. You should do something with all the page stretching. -- Kittithaj 20:42, 27 October 2009 (UTC)

Plez?

Pretty Plez? My threats may be poorly thought out, but that doesn't mean you can't feel threatened by them. Just casually lay it down. We're all friends here. There's no need to make this any bigger than it needs to be. We're both already on a crusade, just do as the nice man asks and neither of us will have to go on a massive search and destroy mission spanning months due to Malton's size. We can be friends. I have cookies. --VVV RPMBG 08:02, 18 July 2010 (BST)

User:Red Hawk One/Sandbox 4. What's the story? -- User:The Rooster RoosterDragon User talk:The Rooster 04:27, 28 April 2010 (BST)

Well, I was thinking of trying to reorder the categorization of location pages by suburb or district, but it looks like the categories are tied in through the info and locationblock templates. I'm testing changing up the variables in the templates so that, say, the Parks Building would be put in a Category:Rhodenbank Buildings category instead of seperate Category:Rhodenbank and Category:Buildings categories. ~ Red Hawk One Talk | space for lease 04:32, 28 April 2010 (BST)
That's...a lot of categories. Tis a shame wiki software totally isn't a database. Would be able to just get the results as the intersection of Rhodenbank and Office Buildings. -- User:The Rooster RoosterDragon User talk:The Rooster 04:38, 28 April 2010 (BST)
I know... Right now I see a possible way to work it out (change the category in Template:Locationblock to [[Category:{{{suburb}}} {{{location_color}}}]] and delete the category from the Info templete), but that leaves the slight problem of the {{{location_color}}} variable being singular. Any way of fixing it would involve alot of tedious page edits. ~ Red Hawk One Talk | space for lease 04:44, 28 April 2010 (BST)
The reason the categories were put on the info bits in the first place was to address the plural problem. Although I think you could use a switch to get it to work. That said, I'm partial to the separate categories myself. -- User:The Rooster RoosterDragon User talk:The Rooster 04:51, 28 April 2010 (BST)

Tally Ho, Watson!

Just a theory here, but... Red Hawk turns up for the first time in late 2008, shortly after the history purge. He immediately jumps in to Danger Report and suburb news updates, making none of the tell-tale newb errors. He "creates" a group, but the only reference to it is a template, and no actual group page was ever created. The Group, BLU, is no longer referenced anywhere in the entireity of the wiki. He later writes off the group and joins RCDC.

During hsi time on the wiki, he rapidly discovers the BIC, works on it tirelessly, and takes on the ultimate project, demergign all merged location pages. This task was finally achieved on 13th June 2010. Three days later, Red makes his last edits to UDwiki, and on the 19th, he visits the dulston alliance forums for the final time, my last recorded instance of him. My conclusion; Red Hawk One was an experienced Wiki-User, and was created for the sole purpose of upgrading the Building Information Centre.

That leaves the ultimate question; If Red Hawk wasn't just a random user, who was he? I have an answer to that too. Vantar vanished from Urban Dead towards mid-2008, and his final edits in september are only a month before the Red Hawk One urban dead account is made. Then, less than a month ago, Vantar returns to UDwiki with no adequate explanation. The reason is that he's been operating udner the alias of Red Hawk One the entire time, and never left. If the timings weren't good enough, what does Vantar do when he returns to the wiki? He finishes Red's ultimate project, essentially writing off the need for the account.

The facts match, the dates match, and, to a large extent, the mannerisms match. The only question is, will checkuser match? I shall now go, accompanied by any sysops who wish to join me, to checkuser to see if my theory is true.--Yonnua Koponen Talk ! Contribs 00:15, 28 June 2010 (BST)

Blackmore:4(04)

How would you like to participate in a somewhat unique wiki project? One thing I have always wanted to do is for a given event, is to have two different versions of that event: a survivor POV and a zombie POV version. Blackmore: 4(04) would be a great test case. The way it would work is the main link to the event would use the currenthour magic word. We would make 24 redirects. Even hours would go to a survivor version page; odd hours would goto the zombie version page. Both pages would have cross-references to the other one. Perhaps a template at the top saying it is a zombie/survivor version and if you want the other one, go here.

A poorman's version of using currenthour as a random variable is my userpage, which pulls different images depending on the hour visited. Unless you know of a different way to have a random variable?

Anyways, we have the basic framework of a more zombie-centric POV for Blackmore:4(04) somewhat ready to go. To keep the styles consistent, we will probably use the same WAR nav-sidebar you are using, as well as the interviews at the bottom (which are solid btw), if that is ok with you.

Is this something that would interest you?

-MHSstaff 05:38, 10 September 2010 (BST)

Given the fact that the page is currently in the middle of a vote right now, I'm somewhat lenient to make a major change to the contents. All the same, your idea does strike me as rather interesting.. Could you provide a mock-up in a sandbox page? ~ Red Hawk One Talk | space for lease 05:56, 10 September 2010 (BST)
I am guessing that you mean reluctant instead of lenient. Anyways, the general framework and tone will be something like this rough example here. Images and what not will still have to be added. It will actually be a completely different page in addition to yours. My idea is that the main link uses the currenthour to link to a redirect, which depending on the time, goes to either the survivor page or the zombie one. Both pages would have links at the top to the other. Mine right now is in text but it would probably be some form of template cross-link. - MHSstaff 06:37, 10 September 2010 (BST)
I'm afraid that, with the tone you're taking, you'd be best off creating your own separate account. I've done my best to create as factual and respectful of an account as I can based on the information people provided (and are still able to provide); quite frankly, I find your tone to be rather insulting to the survivor side of the fight.
If you have additional information, discrepancies that need to be corrected, and/or screenshots, by all means, Post them on the talk page so I can address them. Otherwise, I'm afraid I'd have to decline using your parody page.~ Red Hawk One Talk | space for lease 06:56, 10 September 2010 (BST)
Sorry to have wasted your time. -MHSstaff 07:01, 10 September 2010 (BST)
Tone, in general, is fairly easy to fix and adjust. I wanted to go with something a little lighter to make it a more interesting read from a zombie-POV. If you believe that there are things that you feel are insulting, they can be very easily changed; there really was no intent/desire to insult anyone btw. If you actually like the general idea (zombie/survivor versions), something could probably be worked out. So. Yeah. There you go. -MHSstaff 07:36, 10 September 2010 (BST)
The other possibility, would be a neutral, facts-only POV page (yours with some very minor changes), a heavily-biased zombie page (ours), and a heavily-biased survivor page. All three would share cross-links. I guess it would be best if the main-link would go to the neutral-POV page. Alternatively, we could divide the day into thirds, and have 1/3 of the current hour redirects go to a different version. Another thought. -MHSstaff 07:45, 10 September 2010 (BST)
I'm not particularly interested in intentionally biased versions. ~ Red Hawk One Talk | space for lease 07:52, 10 September 2010 (BST)
While I do think it would be an interesting experiment, RHO is right in saying that we shouldn't be pursuing biased versions for this event. Events are supposed to be NPOV, though they don't need to be sterile. I think that the page, as it is, can be modified a bit to be acceptable to almost everyone involved without losing its personality and charm. Aichon 09:58, 10 September 2010 (BST)
I do agree that there has to be a NPOV version of this somewhere, that version should be as close to the truth as possible, and that version should be the main focus/link of readers trying to find the page. I still think that something like this could work, as it basically lets you have your cake and eat it too. The main page would be NPOV for readers who are into the true, factual, here-is-how-it-happened history, with offshoot POV pages offering content from different POVs for readers looking for something different. As far as the argument that events have to be NPOV, the reality is that not only is there a clear, established precedent for things like this, the community has basically rewarded such approaches. -MHSstaff 17:10, 10 September 2010 (BST)

BIC Change/Addition for Ridleybank

Added this since I found I was doing the math for it anyways, so as to spend as little AP on keeping the BIC for the 'bonk updated. What do you think? I do need to redo the math since I left out a TRP there (rolls eyes, so much for having a B.Sc. Math), but it shouldn't be a big issue. -Wulfenbach 12:02, 14 September 2010 (BST)

Looks like pretty good idea; given the suburb's history I could see a clever feral watchdog or barricade strafer finding something like this useful. The only problem (other than the apparent math error) is that the map is rather bare- I'd consider including a map key, labeling the blocks, or overlaying it on top of an existing map (as was done here). ~ Red Hawk One Talk | space for lease 02:04, 15 September 2010 (BST)
Damnit, the reload's not displaying the new image. Can you set the current file RidelybankTRPPath.png up for deletion with all it's old copies? I'll just load a new one under a different name. - Wulfenbach 05:32, 15 September 2010 (BST)
Well, I'm confused now. Re-uploading the changed image presented the original unchanged image to me, but the updated version was displaying correctly in the appropriate place. Do the imape files only present the original file then by default, and you have to leap through some sort of hoop I don;t know about to see the current version? Anyways, the new file's loaded (Image:RidleybankTRPMap.PNG) and dropped into the appropriate linky on the page. You might as well kill the older one (Image:RidleybankTRPPath.PNG), if you would be so kind.
As for your suggestion about adding a map key, I did look at your example page. I'll consider doing so, but a far simpler one, since I found that Rhodenbank one to be VERY cluttered and difficult to read (although very pretty). Maybe just a NESW compass indicator, since I would think that people are capable enough to orient themselves with that at minimum. I should also go sample the colours on the main maps and use those, since the colour association may prove to be sufficient. Thanks for the advice. -Wulfenbach 05:43, 15 September 2010 (BST)

Traveling Zombie Problem

Wulfenbach, I hate you.

That's a traveling salesman problem I see there. It's NP-Complete, ya know, and did you also notice that your path takes 28AP, when it says it takes 27AP? Because of that one little mistake, I took an interest in finding a shorter path. One thing led to another, and next thing I knew, I had lost a few hours and written a program to brute force a solution for the shortest path. It ended up being a waste of time, since all of the paths it found were ones I found on my own before writing the program, but the best it found is 27AP, which basically just amounts to uncrossing those paths you crossed. I also ran it for if you took out the phone mast as a point to go through, and it found one that takes 26AP, which I had already found on my own as well.

So, basically, I just wasted a few hours programming something that only managed to find paths I had already found on my own. The good news, however, is that it could be used to find other routes in other places in the future. The bad news is that the problem is NP-Complete, so brute forcing it takes a ridiculous amount of time, relative to the number of points. 14 TRPs only took around 3-5 minutes to solve, while 15 took 20-25 minutes. I shudder to think how long it would take to solve 16 or more. Regardless, I hate you for putting Computer Science crack on the wiki, especially so since the program can be improved upon in order to make it run more quickly (e.g. it's an easy problem to multithread or approach heuristically, neither of which I bothered with right now), which only fuels the addiction. I wouldn't be surprised if I come back to it in a day or two to make modifications to it, and it's all your fault. Aichon 07:31, 15 September 2010 (BST)

(point-laugh-taunt-cry.onto.his.math.degree) Yes, the classic Traveling Salesman problem, a fun and rewarding concept in graph theory too! Current path comes to 30 AP inclusive, and I was doing it by hand on paper. Fie on your electrons! What's the path you found? Post it to my talk page, I'll go make the mods to the pic and update it (so that we're not spamming up Hawk's page much more on this topic).-Wulfenbach 07:42, 15 September 2010 (BST)
Hey, I'm the janitor Op- I've gotten messages based on this whole Blackmore thing in the past week than I have in a year. I'm kinda liking the attention. =P ~ Red Hawk One Talk | space for lease 07:45, 15 September 2010 (BST)
That's 30AP to include the FS? I haven't computed that one yet, since FSes aren't considered TRPs any longer (they should really be removed from the BIC, I think), but I can get it cranking anyway, since it'll probably take my computer quite a few hours to reach a final solution and it has nothing better to do anyway (it's already found a 30AP solution and is still going after only about 5 minutes of running). As for the 27AP path, you actually already made the necessary corrections. Your earlier image had a path which crossed itself at one point and took 28AP, despite what the text said. Your current image is fine, however. You'd only need to remove the FS again to have the 27AP solution. Aichon 07:57, 15 September 2010 (BST)
2 hours at a Tim Horton's, over two donuts and a XL Steeped Tea (2C/1S) nets a result a computer can calculate in 15 minutes. "Drhurr, I haz munberz! I am kalkumunputer! So effishunz!" Yes, pen and paper, retarding the Green movement since 105AD China. If FS's are not TRPs anymore, then I will strip it and redo the image. Easy enough, since the base image has no paths on it (forethought, it's a good thing) -Wulfenbach 08:06, 15 September 2010 (BST)
The computer may be able to calculate it that quickly, but it still took me quite a few hours to tell it how to do it, most of which were spent on fixing inane bugs (e.g. "What the hell? The path length looks on par with what I expect but the path it suggests doubles back on itself 6 times and takes 54AP!" or "How come it never goes to the factory at 52,41?"). Yay for deciding to fool around with recursive programming for fun after not having done it seriously in a few years. Aichon 08:22, 15 September 2010 (BST)
Oddly enough, a similar thought crossed my mind. The thought process over those two hours was roughly: "How do I do this again? Do I butcher OSPF, or maybe calculate the average distance between every point and a chosen point, then do so for each point? No, wait, skip average, base sum of all paths connected to a point will do. ...now what? Ummm...start with point with highest value, then move to next highest and so on? Err, well, that's one value for a shortest path value (41). Maybe from largest, but move away from it as fast as possible with the lowest cost on each move. Yeah, that gets me a much lower value 927). Is it the lowest though? Crud, how do I determine that? Maybe average path value summed over all points? No, too large (59). Umm, umm...crud, out of tea error, GPF: Insufficent Resources, entering sleep mode." -Wulfenbach 08:30, 15 September 2010 (BST)
See, for me it wasn't even a question of how to solve it (when brute forcing it simply, all I do is going through every permutation in sequence, and cut off a branch of permutation if it exceeds the minimum path I've found up to that point, since it's a waste of resources to pursue it if the graph has no edges with negative length). Questions like yours basically come back to heuristics and the like for me, which I chose to avoid, since I wanted a complete solution, rather than a best guess from the computer. If the problem was sufficiently more difficult however (say, dozens of nodes), then I'd toss in some simple heuristics (e.g. select closest neighbors first) in order to promote better answers earlier in the program execution, that way I could get a decent answer and then end the execution early. Also, it's still running and hasn't come up with anything better than 30AP yet. Yay for exponential growth in program complexity! Aichon 09:10, 15 September 2010 (BST)

I dunno the rules about data gathering for each suburb BIC, but what if I just wanted to know the power/ruin status of those TRPs? It would be interesting to find out what is the shortest path for that. --Aeon17x 08:34, 15 September 2010 (BST)

Well, the point of this pathing was to give people the best path for AP cost to check all the TRP buildings in Ridleybank. Following it would give you (from external inspection only) whether or not the buildings are powered and/or barricaded. If you wanted ruin status, well you'd have to go into each. 15 buildings would need 15 more AP to enter each one separately, but I recall working out that with free running you could use just 4 or 5 AP to do the same. -Wulfenbach 08:41, 15 September 2010 (BST)
I was thinking you shouldn't even have to go in front of the building to find out the power and ruin status. You just have to be able to see them in your 3x3 map overview. You won't be able to see the exact cade level though, I suppose you still have to go in front of the building yourself for the designated entry points. --Aeon17x 08:47, 15 September 2010 (BST)
It would be 17AP or less to just see them on the minimap (I found a 17AP route in about one minute of thinking, so it's definitely that or less). It'd take quite a bit of reworking my program in order to solve this problem, so I'm probably not going to rework it to solve this version of the problem, but 17AP is a good starting number to see if you can come up with a better one. Aichon 09:10, 15 September 2010 (BST)
Just with a few minutes work (Starting Camidge Drive: -> Gaskell Lane -> Snooke Towers -> Mesney Museum -> Nother Plaza -> Camidge Drive): 16 AP. -Wulfenbach 09:28, 15 September 2010 (BST)
As Wulf, I came up with a 16 AP route for Ridleybank too. Anyway I'm glad you're interested in this little experiment... I just thought it would be nice to find out whether it's possible to scout a suburb with a level 1 zombie that is regularly killed every day. If the suburb TRPs power/ruin status can be scouted within 16 moves (32 AP for a level 1 zombie), then even if they get headshot every day (15 AP) they can complete the scouting run on their own. Just curious, that's all. --Aeon17x 10:19, 15 September 2010 (BST)

Doesn't the current display make it look like it was a reply to thre previous posting, and wouldn't that cause confusion?-Wulfenbach 07:00, 15 September 2010 (BST)
In the Yes section/No section style of voting, the votes are counted by the number under each section. While striking your "No" vote make the intent clear that you've changed your mind, you have to indent it (thus removing it from the numbered list) for it to be truly struck. If you're worried about your old vote being construed as a reply to the above vote, you can add some text such as a small note at the end stating you've taken back your vote.
Basically, the final tally is made off of the total number of votes, and this is just standard protocol to prevent lazy talliers from slipping up. ~ Red Hawk One Talk | space for lease 07:07, 15 September 2010 (BST)
