20080425 Penalize URL Actions
Kolechovski 00:24, 25 April 2008 (BST)
Suggestion type
improvement.
Suggestion scope
URL abuse
Suggestion description
The suggestion Downtime After Death gave me an idea on a simple way to handle URL abuses, mainly ?rise and ?dump. Since Kevan seems to be in no hurry to remove those completely, simply have each attempted use cost an AP (and IP hit). You get failure messages just like when trying to heal somebody who's at full health.
Failed ?rise text: “You stay standing as tall as you can, but fail to notice any difference.” Failed ?dump text: “You can't find any more bodies to dump.”
I think if people are going to be losing their valuable AP trying such tricks, they'd at the least have a to pay a decent price to do so most of the time. Some may even exhaust their AP before accomplishing their goal, or after losing enough AP, decide against trying any further in that round. This would be enough to basically halt nearly all of the abuse.

Keep Votes
- Author Keep - Because sq rt of -1=i--Kolechovski 00:26, 25 April 2008 (BST)
- Partial keep- Keep for the ?rise bit. I'm not sure about ?dump though- in a large seige, multiple people can attempt to dump the same body. It wouldn't have a significant effect in this situation though so I don't mind and it would reduce the opposition from the pro-zombie crowd.--Studoku W! 00:39, 25 April 2008 (BST)
- Keep - makes sense. --PdeqTalk* 00:58, 25 April 2008 (BST)
- Groovy keep - I like it, the kills down there make good points though.--Jamie Cantwel Talk TTC 02:46, 25 April 2008 (BST)
- Keep - I will always vote keep on anything which encourages actual gameplay and discourages coding hacks to get around gameplay. Using ?rise and ?dump are exploits, and should be discouraged. Plus since many zombie players claim it's not used often, they shouldn't object to this suggestion. --Tselita 01:02, 25 April 2008 (BST)
- Keep - The ingame links are there for a damn good reason stop being a cheating scumbag and use them. --Pvt human 06:57, 25 April 2008 (BST)
- Keep - If it stops exploitation of game mechanics, I'm all for it. Charlie Jackpot 09:15, 25 April 2008 (BST)
- Keep - the game code should be robust, exploits should be removed when discovered, and if it's a part of valid gameplay then it should be an open part of the interface, not a hack-workaround. --Funt Solo QT 09:23, 25 April 2008 (BST)
- Keep - Absolutely. If it's not in the normal interface of the game, and gives an advantage, it's reasonable to conclude that it's borderline cheating and make it harder. --Pgunn 14:51, 25 April 2008 (BST)
- Keep - here here. lets end the cheating. gabdewulf 16:12, 25 April 2008 (BST)
- Keep - This definitely needs to be stopped. Meatshield 16:14, 25 April 2008 (BST)
- Keep - yeah freakin hackers ruinin it for us all. Deadkitten 16:21, 25 April 2008 (BST)
- Keep - doubt it'll stop many but will slow some of the cheaters down Gonnagvieuaids 16:29, 25 April 2008 (BST)
- Keep - as Funt--CorndogheroT-S-Z 20:06, 25 April 2008 (BST)
- Keep - More like Nexus War! --BoboTalkClown 00:58, 26 April 2008 (BST)
- Change - Instead of punishing people, just disable it altogether. Rotate the URLs like was done with barricading. --Ms.Panes 12:19, 26 April 2008 (BST)
- Keep - i love zombie updates - they make the game harder and more fun, people exploiting URL loopholes on the other hand don't.--xoxo 07:19, 27 April 2008 (BST)
- Keep ?rise is particularly annoying.--Shusamchen 08:28, 27 April 2008 (BST)

- Keep - Best. Suggestion. Evar --Shakey60 09:58, 27 April 2008 (BST)
- Keep - I consider all use of URL actions to be cheating. --Explodey 22:32, 27 April 2008 (BST)
- keep - Its not a big problem but its still cheating. The "Stand Up" and "dump Body" buttons are there for a reason, why not use them instead. --Honestmistake 11:40, 29 April 2008 (BST)
- Keep - as Funt -Sanpedro 05:11, 1 May 2008 (BST)
- Keep - I hate ?rise, ?dump is useless. --Frednotyetdead 22:42, 4 May 2008 (BST)
- Keep - Funny. The same killers who voted out of genre in Spring Flowers are killing here, against fixing one of the most out of genre areas in the game. --UCFSD 14:08, 5 May 2008 (BST)
- Keep - It's not FUN. It's completely unrealistic. Show me a zombie movie where the zombies get headshot and instantly leap up and continue fighting. Likewise, show me a zombie movie where the survivors dump bodies at warp speed. --Hhal 00:08, 8 May 2008 (BST)
- Keep - Nothing the kill and spam voters have said make any sense. Except for Desyana. ?Dump requires 2 people to be effective, ?rise only requires 1. ?rise is overpowered. --Barton 17:33, 9 May 2008 (BST)
Kill Votes
- Kill - There is no point of removing such great real time tactics only because some people don't know how to use them. Both ?dump and ?rise can be easily repulsed if you are smarter than your opponent. And... they aren't exploits, they're just another http request method. -- 02:18, 25 April 2008 (BST)
- Kill - ?rise and ?dump aren't exploits or coding hacks, they're ways to make sure that you're not punished by excessive lag and prevented from dumping the body you've just killed or rising quickly after being killed. Sometimes lag gets in the way and keeps you from being able to dump right away, if you're waiting for the page to load. Lag is especially fierce when other users are botting. You shouldn't have to be punished for your own legal actions just because someone else's botting is making you lag. Thanks, and don't be dissuaded from posting other suggestions to the wiki! --Desyana 02:22, 25 April 2008 (BST)
- Kill - ?rise is not an exploit...get over it. Billy Club Thorton T! RR 03:43, 25 April 2008 (BST)
- Kill - if you don't like ?rise, then use ?dump, rather than trying to nerf real-time fun. --Jasonjason 06:18, 25 April 2008 (BST)
- Kill - I think they add an interesting bit of tactics into the mix. --ZsL 20:50, 25 April 2008 (BST)
- Kill - I would support a suggestion that made abusable (like attack or dump) url actions carry a confirmation number that assures the user isn't just spaming with code/is a bot, much like barricading works, but not this. --Starplatinum 05:50, 30 April 2008 (BST)
- Kill - Mostly agree with Karek (see Dupe spam vote #1) if it was a huge deal it would be tweaked like ?barricade. Gus Thomas 20:16, 2 May 2008 (BST)
- Kill - As others, mostly Karek. -- AHLGTG THE END IS NIGH! 20:50, 6 May 2008 (BST)
- Kill - I actually think this would improve gameplay somewhat, except for one thing; ?dump needs to work the way it does now. Otherwise you could legitimately see a body on your scree, go to dump it, and have somebody else already have dumped it, meaning you still loose an AP without having "spammed" ?dump, but through normal actions. And since ?dump needs to remain for technical reasons, ?rise should also remain for balance reasons. Swiers 18:42, 9 May 2008 (BST)
- Weak Kill - “You stay standing as tall as you can, but fail to notice any difference.” This hilarious line alone made me want to vote keep, but alas, I must choose against it. I agree that it is an exploit and should be dealt with, but I'm not sure an in-game penalty is quite the way of dealing with it. Even if it was, however, penalizing ?dump, as Swiers said, could result in some penalties among people fairly trying to dump bodies using the game method. It happened to me not long ago in East Greyside. So I think this is a good idea at heart, but in-game penalties are not the way I think this should be done. And don't listen to those people in the spam section. They're mostly just people who have their heads shoved so far up their rear ends that they can't hear how ridiculous they sound. --Daren Elaine 06:33, 9 May 2008(BST)
Spam/Dupe Votes
- Spam - 1) Learn to code before suggestion things like this that are solely based on a code stand point, there's a reason why all actions result in that little url and why you can submit things with an active session by typing that url. 2) it won't change anything and there's a reason it hasn't been set up like ?barricade, you know what that is? It's not a big deal, not only is it rare enough that most of this bitching isn't justified but, compared to, not only, the insane damage to hit ratio survivors have and the other actually abusable url functions like the little bookmarklet someone made that performs x actions in x seconds it's so useless as to not deserve fixing at all. ?rise is a matter of luck, other than that it actually is restricted in a very specific manner, it's called IP hits. --Karekmaps?! 06:39, 25 April 2008 (BST)

- Spam - This is a perfectly valid form of play. Kevan has been aware of this and its use for three years now, and he hasnt done anything because it is really minor. Whoop de doo, a zombie stood up again. Kill it, get more exp. The whining on this issue is by far well out of proportion to the scale of the alleged problem. Dont like ?rise ? Use ?dump. There, simple. Both sides are equipped for the war of the urls. Oh, and both are in the normal interface of the game. Specifically the dump body and stand up buttons. --The Grimch U! E! - Spam - MONSTER SPAM. This was a bad idea when it was discussed and time has not sweetened it. Since both sides (zombie and survivor) have access and gain benefit from URL actions I fail to see why you are so butt-hurt Kolechko.--ZARDOZ 21:21, 26 April 2008 (BST)
