Suggestion description
This idea sets bows as slightly better than the axe, worse than guns in terms of attack accuracy/damage, but couples it with a unique ammo system that doesn't make it the better or worse than either other weapon.
When the skill progression is maxed out bows would have something around 45-55% accuracy, and deal 3 damage. This makes them slightly better than the axe in terms of damage. To fire a bow you would need an arrow. Arrows are individual items with 2% encumbrance apiece. Each shot would expend one arrow.
Arrows that do not hit a target can be recovered. If you miss a button would appear [Recover X Arrows], X being the numbered of shots you missed at that location. Recovering arrows would cost 1AP and return that many arrows to your inventory. Once you move from a square all unrecovered arrows are lost - the button would not be there upon returning. It would also max out at ten arrows.
You would also regain arrows that hit, but only if you kill the zombie you shot them into. After killing it a button would appear: [Collect X Arrows From Corpse] also costing 1AP. If you or the zombie movie before collecting arrows they're all lost.
This gives bows a unique position. They would be a medium accuracy weapon with a very high encumbrance cost for its ammunition. Making up for the encumbrance would be the fact you could reuse the ammunition.
So compared to each weapon the pros and cons of the bow would be:
- Axe
- Pro- Higher accuracy
- Con- Requires a having 2% encumbrance item for each shot
- Pistol
- Pro - Allows you to recover all ammunition, doesn't require AP spent loading
- Con - Lower damage, lower accuracy, requires AP spent recovering arrows
Bows and arrows could be found in many locations, sporting goods stores being one obvious place. Mansions and museums also come to mind.

- Keep!!! - 1. Jon's suggestions are awesome. 2. This suggestion was written by Jon. Therefore, 3. This suggestion is awesome. -- Cheese 17:47, 3 June 2008 (BST)
- Keep Thank you for the vote of confidence! I'm not sure that logic has always been true, but I think this weapon idea would be a balanced and interesting addition. --Jon Pyre 17:49, 3 June 2008 (BST)
- Weak Keep - It's rare for me to keep, much less on weapons, but the mechanics sound okay to me. I'm not really pro-new weapons, but this sounds alright. -- THELORDGUNSLINGER 19:11, 3 June 2008 (BST)

- Keep - Interesting mechanics make for more interesting strategy. The world is full of things that could be weapons, and that's a good thing - let people differentiate themselves more. --Pgunn 15:25, 4 June 2008 (BST)
- Keep - Amazingly good suggestion, Jon - as for it being in genre, watch the beginning of Resident Evil 3 (the movie, not the game) --Tselita 22:22, 4 June 2008 (BST)

- Keep - Nailguns can't kill people. Arrows can't kill people. Knives and bullets can't either, you know. They just pretend they do for game balance. After all, arrows have only been used for hunting for about 4000 years. It's not a proven weapon. Bwahahaha. Some spam/kill voters are so dumb - keep. --Zaphod Beeblebrox 17:06, 6 June 2008 (BST)Invalid Vote(Proxy Policy Violation).--Karekmaps?! 17:50, 6 June 2008 (BST)

- Keep - I'd been toying with a bow idea i'd had, and was actually just figuring out mechanics before i saw this. slight change though, give the arrows a chance to break so you can't recover them. Kill Votes
- Kill - You've put "pistol" instead of "bow" at the end there, I think. (For Dupe hunters, there's a crossbow in rejected, but it's not the same mechanics.) --Funt Solo QT 18:42, 3 June 2008 (BST)
- kill I actually really like this idea but until ammo starts to run out and guns start breaking (which i doubt will happen) its just not a good fit for me!--Honestmistake 19:44, 3 June 2008 (BST)
- kill Now. In no particular order. Why can you pick up your arrows, but not other peoples arrows? How would you tell which arrows were yours? It also dilutes the chances of finding ammo/ flare guns whatever you actually want etc. for people in malls without shopping, (If only there was a template that would help me explain that.) Also "When the skill progression is maxed out bows would have something around 45-55% accuracy" BE definate! Id like to know the damage/xp ratio. Would accuracy be under the firearms training skill tree, or a new one? --RosslessnessWant a Location Image? 19:51, 3 June 2008 (BST)
- Kill - Not a bad suggestion, but I perceive this as unnecessary. Billy Club Thorton T! RR 20:02, 3 June 2008 (BST)
- Kill - It's well thought out, but I don't think a new "firearm" is necessary. --ZsL 22:50, 3 June 2008 (BST)
- Kill/Change - Have you ever searched for arrows that missed and then pulled them out from whatever they're stuck in? It's not easy, it's not fast, and you can't recover everything. Arrows are going to break and get lost. So, recovering should cost more than 1 AP (maybe 3AP?), and you shouldn't get all your arrows back. Also, this is severely incomplete. You're missing search locations and percentages, any kind of info about the skills, initial accuracy, (definite) maxed accuracy, the encumbrance of the bow itself... Your wording is also a bit ambiguous; would you be able to recover arrows from dead survivors, or just zombies? ---Midianian|T|T:S|C:RCS| 22:53, 3 June 2008 (BST)
- Incomplete Come on Jon, you've been around long enough to know better than that. It will have "something around 45-55% accuracy"? Bows and arrows could be found in many locations, sporting goods stores being one obvious place. Mansions and museums also come to mind.? Like WHERE exactly and at what search%?--Pesatyel 03:42, 4 June 2008 (BST)
- Kill - I've taken archery before, and I can tell you that bow and arrows from sports stores typically do not have the draw weight to actually pierce flesh, much less a zombie skull. And as Midianian said, the arrows break off really easily. --Aeon17x 04:37, 4 June 2008 (BST)
- Actually in a sports store I have purchased many bows that can and does pierce flesh. It only takes five pounds of pressure to pierce skin. Now if you talk about the toy ones that use a plunger then it wont. As for the argument that they cant kill something go bow hunting some time. Now after saying that I dont think that this is a good enough suggestion to even vote on it. --Lt.G Deathnut freelance 18:51, 12 June 2008 (BST) Non-author RE Billy Club Thorton T! - Kill - The idea is nice, however, We have enough weapons. Padfu-Zomfu 12:16, 4 June 2008 (BST)
- Kill - As most of the people above me, this suggestion is decently thought out, but it's unnecessary and I find the flavor a bit questionable.--Jiangyingzi 17:19, 4 June 2008 (BST)
- Kill - Pretty much got it covered. I have a feeling it's been suggested before, too. --Vandurn 00:04, 6 June 2008 (BST)
- Kill - As much as I like the idea of new ranged weapons, a bow and arrow just sounds ridiculous. All of Maltons gunstores lack even the basic of hunting rifles, which would be a much more logical choice if it didn't already get spammed and duped into oblivion. --Officer Dick Trickle 16:10, 6 June 2008 (BST)
- Kill - Flavour is off. Plus, Archery - while a lot of fun is a pretty rare sport, and arrows would be very rare even if the bows were'nt... Also I just can't see the typical 50 pound target bow doing enougth against a zombie.... --SeventythreeTalk 18:01, 6 June 2008 (BST)
- Kill/Change - As Midanian and 73, although this could be one of the more plausible/least nauseatingly dumb prospects for a new ranged weapon if you work on it a little bit more. --Riseabove 20:47, 6 June 2008 (BST)
- kill- my second kill --Minigun4523 11:35, 7 June 2008 (BST)
- Kill - Not needed. It is not needed and would disturb the game balance severely. Humans don't need a new weapon, either. It also doesn't fit in with the game's theme well enough. I like how you're thinking, but it's just too much. --L33t 0wn3r 00:39, 11 June 2008 (BST)
- Kill - No need for a new weapon. - Fred Fredfredson 05:03, 14 June 2008 (BST)
- Kill - Few sports stores would stock bows and I doubt there'd be many in mansions. Also, even modern bows require some skill. A novice picking one up would pretty much never hit and if they did, I doubt the zombie would even flinch. We don't need any more weapons!! Zig13 - 14/06/2008 at 22:32(BST)
- Kill - Just pure spam. Ioncannon11 05:01, 15 June 2008 (BST)

- Spam - Completely needless extra item set to add to the game. Humans already have more weapons than you can shake a stick at. Senseless item spam gets my spam. Go away and dont come back. --The Grimch U! E! WAT! 18:25, 3 June 2008 (BST)
- Dupe/Weak no - I tink. If I were in a zombie apocalypse I wouldn't want to grab a bow and arrows, but a gun. A lot of recreational arrows are rather blunt and probably not very good for shooting zombies in the head. -- AHLGTG THE END IS NIGH! 18:31, 3 June 2008 (BST)
