Re: Arbitration ruling clarification request
You may wish to ask Hagnat or Brizth, but I get the feeling that there isn't another way (other than opening a new arbitration case). Then again, arbitration rules are not my strong point. –Xoid S•T•FU! 04:11, 15 September 2006 (BST)
- thanks! --Akule 16:16, 15 September 2006 (BST)
First of all, there's no rules concerning changing arbitration rulings, so technically anything is possible. Common (?) sense says that larger changes warrant a new arbitration case, but at least in this particular case I feel just modifying the old ruling is ok. The spirit of the ruling is quite clear in my opinion, and I feel that's the one we should follow. Since Xoid wrote the original I think he should make the changes, but my general thoughts are these:
Rule #4 (and #2) seems rather ambiguous, with the first sentence speaking about interaction (which I think includes changing someone's journal) and the second sentence talking about contacting the other party (which IMO only includes talk pages). This edit would fall under normal group page ownership guidelines anyway. Hmm. Maybe explicitly listing all the forbidden pages is not such a good idea, as he could (and did) claim that they do not fall under the ruling. I believe the usual arbitration wording is "Pages where X can be considered an invested party". Or something similar. Ironically, that would be even more ambiguous than the current ruling, but in a good way...
Bah, what am I blathering here. Xoid should know what he meant with the ruling and should be able to re-phrase it. --Brizth M T

- Law student--ok. But you still haven't really indicated a motive--I mean, is all this out of a sincere and grave fear for Kevan's welfare, out of a pure, driven sense of justice (such justice as the laws may be argued as providing for), to annoy/harass/get attention... not accusing or favoring any one of these (or any other motive), just sincerely wondering. In any case, it seems like a lot of effort that needs some kind of significant motive. I honestly believe you are taking it too far. Yes, some images are clear copyright rip-offs. Yes, I believe the mostly unused ones should be deleted. However, your recent deletion "crusade" is taking things too far. At this rate, even if you are entirely in the right, nobody will listen to you. Radicals have alot of trouble. The wiki is/isn't commercial
Hello could help but notice the last flare up in the great wiki copyright wars and I would like to try and end it once and for all. It seams, to me at least, this clearly is a commercial website but there seems to be some confusion that free does not mean noncommercial. Is there anywhere were kevan has said that the wiki is commercial? A quote from him could bring an end to that part of struggle and you seam like the person who would know where it was if it existed already. - Vantar 00:37, 8 September 2007 (BST)
- Well... heh, I'm not akule, and try to stay out of the copyright drama... but how about the lil urbandead.com thing might give it away ;) --THE Godfather of Яesensitized, Anime Sucks Yalk | W! U! WMM| CC CPFOAS LOE ZHU | Яezzens 00:49, 8 September 2007 (BST)
- Well, aside from the fact that the wiki is a subpage of urbandead.com, the about page, does state that "Urban Dead is an HTML/text-based MMORPG created by Kevan Davis. The game went live in July 2005. Set in a quarantined region of the fictional city of Malton, it deals with the immediate aftermath of a zombie outbreak. New players can start as a human or zombie, each with different abilities and limitations. In over a year, Urban Dead has garnered over 800,000 registered players. Statistics for the wiki are available as well." This shows that the wiki is a part of the service that Kevan provides. I'll have to make a page where I explain out the myths of copyright law, the facts of copyright law, and how it pertains to us. --Akule School's in session. 20:53, 8 September 2007 (BST)

Do you think UDWiki:Administration/Policy Discussion/Copyrights Update 1 is enough to answer any questions people have about commercial use? - Vantar 05:56, 9 September 2007 (BST)
- It will help, but people won't follow it even then. They will continue to ignore what that policy says and what Kevan has to say about it. Look up at Karek. He could give a flying crap of what is on that page or what Kevan wants. Many users are like that. I could flesh out the Copyright page to explain how copyright law works with the wiki and in the UK, but I doubt people will read it. --Akule School's in session. 01:57, 12 September 2007 (BST)
Regarding Grim_s
It's basically up to Kevan how the wiki is run and whether steps are taken to shape the culture towards something more adult. Personally, I like to see civility wherever I go, but this is a wiki attached to a game with huge variation in ages - I'll push for more civility, but not too hard (on Wikipedia I pushed considerably harder because it was actually trying to get things done). As Grim_s is an admin already (or whatever they're called on this MediaWiki), and given how relatively new I am on this particular Wiki, I don't want to rock the boat too much, even as I am bothered by how he conducts himself. I might chime in to Kevan in that discussion at some point, I'm not sure. Take care, and thanks for the pointer. --Pgunn 01:39, 9 September 2007 (BST)
- Well, I am encouraged with Kevan's response, and I will work toward making the wiki a better place. It's nice to know that he shares my opinion in this matter. --Akule School's in session. 02:39, 11 September 2007 (BST)

- Or a user who constantly harasses people he dislikes and attempts to use the system as a vehicle for their hatreds? I wonder who would ever do that.--Karekmaps?! 02:43, 11 September 2007 (BST)
- Following policy is hardly harassment. Amusingly enough, if I do a simple stroll through your contributions, I can find very blatant harassment against people. --Akule School's in session. 01:59, 12 September 2007 (BST)

I've only had time to give it a brief skimming (real life = extremely busy) but what I've seen looks like a nice summary of the copyright laws in general. - Yeah, I know. I had a lot to say, and I am taking it seriously. I'm just wondering if Grim is going to see the similarities over his recent rash of dickering over a rule for the suggestions page, and my very similar argument about the rules of arbitration, as he considered it irrelevant. But hey, I'm just a mindless wikilawyer right? It's not like Grim escalated it in order to prove his point. :D --Akule School's in session. 01:17, 12 October 2007 (BST)

- Ah, but it can't be that easy. Now, if we allowed for off-site linking of images, we could avoid the issue altogether. Kevan wouldn't be at risk as the copyrighted images would not be hosted on his site, and we could keep them confined to the user pages. The wiki could then just host unique urban dead-specific images (ex. The Great Mall Project) on the main pages. People could then "have their cake and eat it too", as they could keep their copyrighted images and still keep to the spirit of the copyright policy (i.e. prevent possible lawsuits). --Akule School's in session. 01:41, 16 October 2007 (BST)

I am with matt on this one... your approach to deletions annoys the hell out of me and in general i agree with the ruling, however it really should have had an opt out for such things as your stuff being put up for deletion! - It's no better then putting pages up for speedy deletion because you don't like the author.--Karekmaps?! 11:00, 29 November 2007 (UTC)
- No, it would be voting to avoid unfairly penalizing Akule. If something of his gets put up for deletion and he has no vote I am stating that I would be willing to act as his proxy vote! Call it vandalism if you like but I am more than willing to argue that something should be kept because the creator wants it kept and i think it unfair to deny him his chance to argue for himself! Vandalism would apply only if I was voting merely to be an asshat.--Honestmistake 12:29, 29 November 2007 (UTC)
- Not so much of a "proxy" vote, but out of our own free will guys like us would always vote keep on an unfair request such as the one example we're mentioning (someone posting some guy who can't defend himself stuff on A/SD). We're merely making it explicit on this header, because we know that Akule is the one person that could need this kind of help in the not so distant future. - There's a difference there, I'm talking about Honestmistake's comment that anything involving Akule, regardless of why it is there, will get a keep. Now if something is there simply because the person who added it wanted to exploit Conndrakka's absurd ruling then that's a different story.--Karekmaps?! 21:18, 29 November 2007 (UTC)
- I would be voting keep because I feel it would be wrong to delete someones pages/contributions without their being able to comment. Thats a firmly held opinion and thus more than enough to count as a valid vote... just because i have made it clear that i will do this does not make me a troll or a vandal or anything else... It means i am offering support to someone IF they need to call on it! --Honestmistake 21:31, 29 November 2007 (UTC)

Finally, extracted textually from Conndraka's ruling: You might be right, but let somebody else handle it for a while. --Matthew Fahrenheit YRC☺T☺+1 14:28, 29 November 2007 (UTC)
- It's no better then putting pages up for speedy deletion because you don't like the author.--Karekmaps?! 11:00, 29 November 2007 (UTC)
- It wouldn't be voting keep to screw with A/D, it would be voting keep because he thought it unfair to delete a page when the owner couldn't defend them self on the page due to an A/A ruling -- boxy • talk • 10:31 29 November 2007 (BST)
- It's vandalism because it's voting for it simply to screw with A/D, same reason why voting keep on a suggestion for the sake of stopping spam is vandalism. --Karekmaps?! 10:06, 29 November 2007 (UTC)
- Since when? People can vote however the hell they want to vote. Otherwise "because Akule needs to get laid" would be vandlism as well.--THE Godfather of Яesensitized, Anime Sucks Yalk | W! U! WMM| CC CPFOAS LOE ZHU | Яezzens 10:00, 29 November 2007 (UTC)
- Thanks guys. I appreciate it. I don't think that you will have to worry about me putting up any images for deletion for a while, ruling or no. Hagnat did reach out before the arbitration started and proposed an interesting idea on how to work out the copyrighted images for the wiki. I'm going to continue his work with Category:Copyrighted Images and set-up the Copyright Project to work with Boxy's Image Categorization project. I figure that by going through and first giving credit to the author of the images, it would be not only a good first step toward gaining permission to use the images and keeping them in some semblance of order, but a step that wouldn't cause further strife amongst the other wiki users. --Akule School's in session. 19:21, 29 November 2007 (UTC)
- About the giving credit, is there more to it the just filling out Template:Copyright and slapping it on the image? If thats all there is to it then I can crank through a few hundred of these. - Vantar 21:03, 29 November 2007 (UTC)
- That's the start. By filling out Template:Copyright, we are at least citing who owns the images. They will still be used without permission, but at least we would have them cited. I'd like to also add something to the template so we can instruct the owners of the images (should they not want their images used) on how to go about having their images removed. That way they will have the option, rather than harassing Kevan. --Akule School's in session. 19:00, 30 November 2007 (UTC)
- I'm glad you're exploring more peaceful options, Akule. --Cyberbob DORIS CGR U! 02:02, 30 November 2007 (UTC)
- It's better than nothing. This way, if an artist stumbles across the site, they will be less likely to want to pull the images.

Image Categories
If you're going to start into them, please put more than one wherever it's appropriate, not just the most obvious one. For example, Image:Weapons.JPG should have Category:Weapons on it also, at least -- boxy • talk • 06:35 1 December 2007 (BST)
- I'm going to go back and add those. I was first going through the template pages and adding the Category:Template_Images to those images there. Then I was going to choose another image category and go there. --Akule School's in session. 06:38, 1 December 2007 (UTC)
- Well that just fucks up our ability to go through the uncategoriesed list and find which images need tags. As soon as you put the template category on them, we'll not be able to find them again -- boxy • talk • 06:40 1 December 2007 (BST)
- Alright. I'll go back and completely finish all of them. --Akule School's in session. 06:41, 1 December 2007 (UTC)

- Soon to be categorized, even more. (cue evil laughter) --Akule School's in session. 07:06, 1 December 2007 (UTC)

Image Categorisation
I think we're ready to start in on categorising the wiki's images, please read the instructions on that page, and then if there are any further questions, ask on the talk page (or my own page). We've got a big job ahead :) -- boxy • talk • 01:23 2 December 2007 (BST)

- Man. I should have checked this while I was on holiday. I would have been glad to have participated in that. Let me know the next time you do something like that (like Valentines Day) and I can see what I can do to round up some of the guys. --Akule School's in session. 15:28, 27 December 2007 (UTC)
