20080202 Hyphens in character names

Suggestion scope
The list of allowable symbols in character names.

Suggestion description
I'd like to allow hyphens in character names. Currently, according to the registration page, a character name can only contain "letters, numbers, spaces and apostrophes". I'd like to add hyphens so that I can have characters with hyphenated last names such as those in the works of P.G. Wodehouse: Augustus Fink-Nottle, Cyril Glossop-Smith, etc.

Implementation is probably as simple as adding one character to the regular expression that's used to filter the names. It would require no extra storage space or any increase in server load.

  37. Kepp- Seriously Rakuen, learn to have a little fun. A hyphen, though seemingly pointless, is extraordinarily small for a change, and would allow more names. Someone wants their last name to be Einstein-Rosen, then let them. Although that would be rather sick if you think about it. -- Quizzical  Quiz  Speak  02:35, 9 February 2008 (UTC)
  38. I am on a voting spree, but to make this vote valid, I'm in agreement with the above voters. --•▬ ▬••▬ • •••• •▬ ▬•▬• ▬•▬ #nerftemplatedsigs 15:37, 9 February 2008 (UTC)
  39. Keep- Nice idea. I don't see any real security problems - do you really think that Kevan isn't already escaping user input? --Viktor Suvorov 17:04, 10 February 2008 (UTC)
  40. Keep- Why not?--Jamie Cantwell3 07:46, 11 February 2008 (UTC)
  41. Keep - As above. --Toejam 10:19, 11 February 2008 (UTC)
  42. Keep - Triviality is no excuse for a kill vote. This may be small, but it would be useful. This suggestion does have a point, and that's to allow hyphens (or more correctly, hyphen-minuses) in character names. --Anotherpongo 14:17, 17 February 2008 (UTC)
  43. Keep - I truly cant see why someone would vote no. --Alphonse Burr 23:26, 17 February 2008 (UTC)

Kill Votes

  1. Kill - Actually I think it's not allowed for security reasons.--Karekmaps?! 02:20, 3 February 2008 (UTC)
Do you mean SQL injection? I know that two hyphens in a row indicates a line comment in Oracle-SQL, but I believe it's string delimiters that are the key to SQL injection. --Sterling Bershadsky 03:45, 3 February 2008 (UTC)
  2. Kill - No real benefit. --Pgunn 10:39, 3 February 2008 (UTC)

Spam/Dupe Votes

  1. Spam - Utterly pointless... --/~Rakuen~\Talk Domo.gif I Still Love Grim 15:59, 4 February 2008 (UTC)
