20080327 Radios to "Walkie Talkies"

Radio Improvement
Suggestion scope

Suggestion description
Currently hand held radios can only receive incoming transmissions thus making them more of a "Scanner". I propose allowing radios to transmit over a very short range (1 suburb) making them more of a "walkie talkie". The reason for the lack of range is due its low battery power. It is reasonable/realistic that the "walkie talkies" once used by police/fire/military personnel would be available and plentiful in the city.
The Proposed "Walkie Talkie" would operate essentially the same as it did before, with the exception of added short range transmission. "Walkie Talkies" would still be able to receive any message sent from the standard transmitter regardless of distance (so long as both are set to the same freq.)
All current Radio Transmitter rules will apply to the new "Walkie Talkie": 26.00-28.00 MHz is restricted to players with Radio Operation Skill". "Walkie Talkies" would be found in the same locations at the same search percentages as the current radios are.
I further propose that zombies have a 25% chance of being able to transmit a message if they are equipped with a radio.(Flavor)
SPAM: One possible benefit of this improvement is the potential reduction of Radio Spam. Players who currently Radio Spam transmit their messages over the entire city, if they were to use the new "Walkie Talkie" their area of influence would be reduced to players within 1 suburb tuned to their frequency. Additionally, players within the 1 suburb range would be alerted to the "Spamer's" presence making them a potential target.

Weak Keep - Eh...--/~Rakuen~\TalkAh, WanYao gotcha... sorry... but I gotta go with what he said...I Still Love Grim 16:38, 27 March 2008 (UTC)
- Keep - A rare keep vote from me. I really actually like this suggestion. One question: would the broadcast area be by an area (for example, 10x10 square of blocks around a character), or would it be suburb specific (for example, if you are in Pimbank, it only broadcasts to Pimbank)? Billy Club Thorton T! RR 17:18, 27 March 2008 (UTC)
- Keep - Great idea and would help to get in contact with people who don't have a transmitter.--MikhailA 17:40, 27 March 2008 (UTC)
- Weak keep Nice realism, not sure about the zombies. But generally good. --RosslessnessWant a Location Image? 17:44, 27 March 2008 (UTC)
- Keep - I like the idea of not needing a Transmitter to send a message. -- Rohndogg1 17:58, 27 March 2008 (UTC)
- Keep - Pretty good. I could quibble with the range numbers (you can't center a 10x10 square on the user, it needs to be 11x11 or 9x9) but otherwise its not bad.

- Keep - It doesn't cut down on spam, as you noted that broadcasts from a transmitter are still global...but I like it anyway. --Shigogouhou 19:01, 27 March 2008 (UTC)
- Oooh. I can now transmit Morse code on the go... --Axe Hack Talk 20:02, 27 March 2008 (UTC)

- Keep - Quite realistic, nothing wrong here -- 21:59, 27 March 2008 (UTC)
- Keep - This is a cool idea! Makes sense, and might actually prove useful in areas hit hard by a zombie siege where powered transmitters are hard to come by. I also think it would be fun to hear the occasional "grab mah manbagz harmanz" come in over the radio.--Dr Doom86

- Change - Maybe adding a new walkie talkie item would be better. --RayHanley 12:40, 28 March 2008 (UTC)
- Keep - It'd be cool to be able to send out little local missions - such and such a place needs healers, or the barricades are low here (good for zombies and survivors). --Toejam 18:51, 29 March 2008 (UTC)

- Keep This is much closer to the way HAM radio works, but not many players would be terribly familiar with that, so the term "Walkie Talkies" is a bit more appropriate to the audience. (I'm certainly no HAM radio expert.) I'd love to see a bit more complexity with this too as I've seen in other suggestions, such as random dead unusable spots, signal bleed, and randomly hearing/transmitting longer ranges. --└Frozen┘┌Flame┐ 04:36, 30 March 2008 (BST)
- Keep - Less spam. --Heretic144 07:01, 30 March 2008 (BST)

- Keep - I do not see any problems with this.--Fire suicide 01:56, 2 April 2008 (BST)

- Keep - Because I want more gadgets.--Tselita 18:29, 7 April 2008 (BST)
- Keep - As above, though in my opinion we already have cell phones for this use... --Private Mark 04:32, 8 April 2008 (BST)
- Keep - This will help groups coordinate, as there is a chance to broadcast w/o electricity. -doc crook 13:06, 10 April 2008 (BST)
Kill Votes
- Kill - Radio and Walkie-Talkies should be separate items. --Pgunn 20:59, 27 March 2008 (UTC)
- Kill - I also thought that the radios are effectively CB radios, which do have handhold devices. --Akule School's in session. 21:52, 27 March 2008 (UTC)

- RE:They do have hand-held receivers which make sense when you consider that survivors are using fixed broadcasters. Now if you were to suggest changing mobile phones to walkie talkies, I'd be up for that. --Akule Maker of fine, hand-crafted UDWiki sass since 2006 -- Akule School's back in session™ 02:04, 2 April 2008 (BST)

- Sorry I try to support new ideas and i like this one but there is the spam and making transmitters defunct whilst also removing the zombies ability to sabotage communications. - Pardus 01:47, 28 March 2008 (UTC)
- kill - radios are radios. period. what's needed to deal with this issue is a cell phone buff, instead. because at least cell phones require the maintenance of a tower building. WanYao 03:05, 28 March 2008 (UTC)
- seriously ... instead of having radios duplicate cell phones, let's make cell phones more useful. make it worth putting a genny in the mast buidlings. notice how few masts are operational? not because survivors are ZOMG SKREWED, but because they are not the worth the effort. i'd like to see them become more worth the effort. --WanYao 16:29, 28 March 2008 (UTC)
- Agree with WanYao, this nerfs cell phones.--Pesatyel 07:39, 28 March 2008 (UTC)

- Kill - You realize this is you complaining about Radios working too well right? If you want direct communications use Mobile Phones, if you want short range communications use Speech, if you want to leave a lasting message use Graffiti, and if you don't like radio spam change the channel or start your own local one. Don't buff radios, they don't need it.--Karekmaps?! 10:51, 29 March 2008 (UTC)

- kill / change - I see what the author is getting at, but there are many very good points in the kill section. Plus adding an item, that completly nurfs an existing one. I think changing cellphones is the best coarse of action. Perhaps if a Radio mast could broadcast to not only it's suburb, but the 8 adjecent suburbs as well? -- Jack S13 T!
