A confession

I have a Confession to make, I may have been a trenchie in my earlie days of playing UD, I was 15 and it was my first RP I have ever done. Granted, I was more polite than many other trenchies, I was just overly cautious, and had just about no idea how to play.---Scout talk!!! 01:04, 10 September 2010 (BST)

You weren't a trenchie. Trenchies have no fear. From what I gather, you were just cowardly and necrophobic. That's not trenchcoater nature, that's harman nature. --VVV RPMBG 06:01, 11 September 2010 (BST)

Obvious Piss-Takes

The Trenchcoater page is great, and in particular the list of trenchies is just outstanding... but there are quite a few of them on there which are just complete piss-takes on actual trenchcoaters... Trenchcoat 517 and Christopher Hunt, for example. Should they have their own sub-category? --Blackboard 13:58, 8 September 2008 (BST)

Condemned

Just so you know, im in the process of rebuilding the glossary, and to be blunt, this page falls so far below the standard of every other article here that im pretty much going to burn it to the ground and start over from scratch with a completely new, better and more descriptive glossary worthy article than this farcical entry. When that happens i will be archiving this talk page as well. If you have any complaints or queries, feel free to drop them on my talk page. You have maybe a day to recover whatever you like about the page and put it somewhere else before i finish writing up my new version. --The Grimch U! E! WAT! 04:58, 7 January 2008 (UTC)

What is wrong with it? Too humorous? It gives the basic details of what a trenchcoater is in the opening paragraph, the rest of the article is a humorous expansion on it. Couldn't you just edit that opening paragraph, so that people wanting to know what the term means can get a quick answer? Or abridge the page to that single paragraph, and link to the expanded article? -- boxy talki 12:18 7 January 2008 (BST)
I described the nature of the problems with it perfectly clearly. Are you perhaps hard of reading? Elements of the opening paragraph will survive, but most of the entry will be removed as its just one huge derogatory circlejerk. --The Grimch U! E! WAT! 12:42, 7 January 2008 (UTC)
Parts of it perhaps are derogatory, but mostly it seems to be laughing with the trenchies... it's not like they're ashamed of their lot in the game -- boxy talki 12:56 7 January 2008 (BST)
The article is a glossary article that, in it's etnirety, provides just about no information on what a trenchcoater is, how the term came about, why it came about, why there is such a negative conotation to trenchcoaters in the game, why certain people are deemed trenchcoaters over others, how to spot real trenchcoaters, trenchcoater evolution in how they act and what qualifies them for the term. It's pretty much nothing but insulting users. Sometimes I wonder if you two will argue over anything.--Karekmaps?! 13:19, 7 January 2008 (UTC)
Ugh. Let's just stop the fighting- I've copied the old page in its entirety and moved it into a userpage here. If anyone wants to see it, they can go there. --Boris 18:55, 7 January 2008 (UTC)
The article does contain most of that information though, Karek. The whole "What Trenchcoaters do" section defiantly needs a major overhaul (if not deletion altogether), but other than that, I figure most of it is salvageable with a few judicious edits. Failing that, if you really think that any page with the glossary category on it has to be a dry, bare bones "definition" type page, then I'd move the entire page to a sub-page, and leave the bare bones one at Trenchcoater -- boxy talki 00:44 8 January 2008 (BST)

I am curious to learn the TRUE origin of the term, when they appeared, why and WHY people hate them so much (i DO know that some ar big jerk)! However, there are some insulting content on this page. From time to time, its mean... --The Skritzcoater

Come on. Is deleting part of the Malton culture the answer? I think not. TerminalFailure

It's not deleting part of Malton's culture, the page is going to be replaced and rebuilt, he's just saying that pretty much none of the current original content will be kept. This page horribly misrepresents the term and is being used as a way to insult players some people don't/didn't like, not to describe what a trenchcoater is or what the term really means.--Karekmaps?! 07:03, 16 January 2008 (UTC)
I think that the true definition of Trenchcoating is an attempt to be badass and/or heroic. Sadly, some Trenchie DO fit the stupid stereotype. They farm Mrh?Cow and SPEAK IN CAPS!1!!1!1...
However, i think this page is responsible for the in-game hatred toward Trenchcoater. I mean, seriously..."Wall of Shame", its a bit insulting. The ORGINAL version of the page mention that it IS an insult! Look at the first version, in the page history...

Uhmmmmmmm... how the frigg can you just unilaterally "condemn" and delete this page??? Whatever happened to the way the wiki works, the rules and the procedures and all that??? i actually agree that this pagew has got out of hand ... however, what gives a couple of people the right to just delete it offhand?? unless i missed something during my break from the game... like has there been a vote in deletions that i missed? rules changes? or a proper discussion on the talk page about fixing the article? something like that? ... this is all "highly unusual" .... WanYao 06:13, 25 February 2008 (UTC)

Check Grim's namespace subpages, this is under construction and the version he has partially done there is better than this one by a lot. He's not just wiping the page he's replacing to provide more, and better, information in a more informative manner.--Karekmaps?! 06:53, 25 February 2008 (UTC)

For the Record

I was both surprised and honored to find myself on your Wall of Shame. I even fixed the misspelling of my name! I would like to point out for the record, however, that my character is named after a samurai who did indeed use a katana. So that's not unoriginal. For your approval (Wall of Shame candidate)

Encountered this guy [4] in (where else) Caiger Mall. He's got the name, he's in a group that makes you go, "Who?", but the real kicker is of course the description: "Rex believes in overwhelming firepower as the key element for victory. He has strapped guns all over his special ops suit, lots of it: 2 Leone auto shotguns, 2 M4A1, 4 Deagles, and his personal favorite Betty: A customized minigun with grenade launcher." Geez, buddy, compensating for something? Never mind that an unloaded minigun by itself weighs around 130 pounds. Note also that he's level 13 and still hasn't bought Construction.--Jiangyingzi 09:39, 28 July 2007 (BST)

Wall of Shame

A lot of the trenchies listed on the Wall of Shame are clearly trenchcoater parodies. Any time a character description falls too well in line with the contents of this page someone's probably being ironic. I do not like this new pic at all. It's low and mean, I'd like to think we are above such ad hominem crap... Ha! Naive, idealistic fool that I am... Not the U.S. Army!

I just wanted to point out that, while Malton may well be in the U.K., that wouldn't eliminate the U.S. Army from being there. Well I thought there should be a section for dispute and questions about Trenchie status, for instance:

one of my characters has 7 pistols and (about) 8-10 shotguns, but He's pretty low level and just uses them to get his basic EXP. He never goes out healing that needs to be done, is working on getting construction, and has a profile link Here. Is he a Trenchie?

Remove the list of trenchcoaters

Unlike Grim above, I'm fine with the humorous take on trenchcoaters in this article-except for one bit, this "list of trenchies." It's pretty clear that people just throw on people or groups that they don't like. A quick skim of the list finds two well-known groups (Creedy Defense Force and The Imperium) and one smaller group (Shining Crest Mercenary Co.) A quick look through the history finds the Fortress, among others.

So is anyone against me removing the list of trenches, and perhaps just integrating some of the obvious parodies into the main article? Linkthewindow  Talk  23:24, 3 February 2009 (UTC)

Well, I agree with you in principle, except that some of the profiles/comments are effing hilarious. Could you create some sort of archive/subpage for the list and alter the rest of the article? --Blackboard 00:11, 4 February 2009 (UTC)

Just got done reading this

And I have to say, with all apologies, that I'm guilty of playing a "tall" Armycoater with dark red eyes (oh noes!) as part of his zombie description. Since it's already been pointed out that the placement of Malton as in the U.K. does not technically invalidate the possibility of the U.S. Army being there - doubly so given that such a "zombie outbreak" would constitute a threat to global stability - I'll instead focus on my other problem with this list.

It seems like it's going to include those who watch cable TV next.

It's just that amorphous. Half of the entries in the "What Trenchcoaters Do" subsection, and the subsection below it, are more fittingly applied to ill-mannered asses or n00bs who haven't roleplayed anything in their lives: except, that is, at 10 years old; with their friends; and centered around their favorite cartoon or video game. Specifically, things like "BOOM HEADSHOT!","FUCK YOU PKer! (said 50 times)", or "SHOOP DA WOOP!" Also, I've been defending areas of the map that have been attacked for prolonged periods by more zombies than can be seen inside at one time. Why should it be taboo to let everyone know the combined strength of the force approaching, when they're still some squares away?

While it's good for laughs, and I got a nice kick out of seeing some of the entries on the trenchcoater list that are just too dumb for words (Bradley M243, anyone?) I think there are more than a few places where "trenchcoating" and legitimate RP end up mixing. I am the sole member of my Urban Dead group, for example, but the 173rd Airborne is all too real. I wouldn't consider it out of the realm of possibility for survivalists to group together in a "*-Militia", nor to see those with newly-minted scars in an area enduring a catastrophe.

Which brings me to my next point, what you won't see. Of course, some idiot carrying around 20 shotguns and a RPG in the event of a real zombie invasion is out of the question. But to be fair, you won't see a panicked 120-pound college student hefting five pistols and four shotguns either.

Lastly, I have no problem with "epic speech" on a profile as long as it doesn't look like Bubbles the Chimp wrote it up.

I've been trying to change the format of this page for a while - I reached a compromise a while ago, but meh. Your response is pretty much the main reason why I want tihs page fixed - humor articles don't belong in the mainspace. Linkthewindow  Talk  09:59, 13 January 2010 (UTC)
