Gsm mast.jpg

Mobile phone masts, when powered, allow survivors to use mobile phones to leave messages for those on their Contacts List. Masts are mounted on the roofs of a variety of buildings.

From outside, a mast without power has the following description: There is a mobile-phone mast on the roof of the building. Setting up and fueling a generator inside the building changes the external description to: On the roof of the building, the lights of a mobile-phone mast blink against the sky.

The masts themselves cannot be reached or attacked directly. A mast is disabled when the generator powering it runs out of fuel or is destroyed.

The Game Statistics page has info on what percentage of the network is currently running; presumably, since there are 100 suburbs in Malton, each mast represents one percent of the total network.

Current Mobile Network Coverage: 52% as of 17:05, 31 May 2008 (BST)

Mapped Active Network Coverage: 12% as of 17:05, 31 May 2008 (BST) -- Discrepancy of 40 masts.

Locations

All mast locations have been reported by members of the Wiki community.

The Unofficial Map graphically indicates the locations of buildings with masts. You can also check this metatac image.

Please note that the process to update this data has changed. You should no longer edit the Locations section to add your data. Instead, you should update the Danger Report for the building containing the mast. You can link to the report by clicking the building's name on the list. Change the "mast_status=" line accordingly. The available definitions have not changed. The user line on the danger report will be used on this new list.

This new method is to allow the reports and this page to show the same data (or rather they will, the reports hopefully will show the data at some point) and also means that danger reports also get proper updates.

The following are the working definition for the status chart below:

  • active = Service has been positively confirmed in suburb.
  • nofuel = The presence of a generator has been confirmed, but it is out of fuel.
  • destroyed = The lack of a generator has been confirmed. Fuel and a generator are needed to return the mast to active status.
  • ruined = The mast building is ruined. A toolbox, generator, and fuel will be required to restore the mast to working order.
  • occupied = One or more zombies have taken up residence in the Mast Building. A lot of firepower and maybe some team work will be needed to get the Mast up and running again. Is most likely ruined.
  • inactive = There is no service in the suburb, but for an unknown reason.
  • activeold, nofuelold, destroyedold, ruinedold, occupiedold and inactiveold = Service to the suburb has not been checked in the last 5 days Activeold suburbs are not included in the "mapped active network coverage" at the top of the page.
  • unknown = Service to the suburb has not been checked in the last 10 days. The goal is to have no suburbs in this state

Listen on 27.10 for new status reports. Occasionally tag or pirate-broadcast this url -- http://tinyurl.com/qvew4 -- so that others know to listen and update this list.

At most, a generator fueling a Phone Mast will last five days from the time of fueling. All 'active' masts whose timestamp is more than five days old ought to be reclassified as 'activeold.'

Mobile Network Maintenance Teams

Want to maintain phone masts across Malton or just the one in your suburb? Add your group to the list! Include a timestamp so everyone will know if it's up to date. You may copy your entry from previous year to current year if still doing active work on masts.

2008

Currently active groups for 2008:

  • Malton Telephone (MalTel) is currently the main group devoted to maintaining the network of phone masts; anyone interested in joining is advised to contact them via Radio Frequency 27.10. Meridian100 13:02, 12 March 2008 (UTC)
  • Rolt Heights: Kract Jaw will work to keep the phone mast in Rolt Heights up and running. We can be reached by radio at the frequency 26.55. 24:15, 22 January 2008 (MST)

2007

Groups active for 2007 (and early 2008 if updated later in the year):

  • Chancelwood: THEM, the defenders of Haslock use mobile phones extensively and are keeping the tower active. JackGoodaxe 06:46, 1 December 2007 (UTC)

2006

Past

Older maintenance groups, include date for last known mast activity for history tallying:

I just visited Pennville; they are not active. I found an unoccupied but caded mast building with an old MalTel grafitti in it. Asheets 20:20, 5 February 2007 (UTC)
  • The Creedy Defense Force has volunteered to maintain mobile phone service in the four subs around the Fort Creedy area. The Creedy Area Network: If no one else can the CDF CAN
  • The ROACH Klips have volunteered to help try and maintain mobile phone service in Roachtown. Any assistance would be welcomed!
I'm at the Yagoton tower now, and it looks abandoned (bad pun ,I know). Seriously, though... there are about 150 infected humans in a 4 block radius of the mast, and no working hospitals. Asheets 16:22, 1 March 2007 (UTC)
  • The Warseers are maintaining the Mobile Phone mast in Eastonwood, and will continue to until =][= FURTHER RECORDS PURGED =][=.
  • Haven Radio is currently aiding MalTel in the maintenance of the cell mast in Pashenton. (EDIT: Haven Radio has not been seen anywhere around the mast in weeks, if any groups or people are willing to assist keeping this up, please contact us in Pashenton. Thank you!)
I just was in Osmondville, and found the mast unmanned. Asheets 16:14, 21 February 2007 (UTC)
  • OMC helps every mast in malton
