20080412 Tap on the Shoulder - 0 damage emotive attacks

Suggestion type
attack (sort of)

Suggestion scope
all characters

Suggestion description
Along with the current attack options offered to characters, or perhaps in a new actions drop list, this would offer some new "attack" types. As with current attack types, some would be usable only as a zombie, and some would be usable only as a survivor. As a whole, these new attacks would share several features:

  • they do 0 damage
  • they have a 100% chance to hit
  • they require no skill or equipment

The purpose of these "attacks" is simply to produce an attack report on the targets screen, to allow limited "communication" (emoting) without alerting anybody else in the room. For example, when you punch somebody, they get a report that you punched them, thus know you were (and may still be) in the same location with them. But (unless the punch kills them) nobody else gets that same information. In place of a punch, this suggestion simply allows you to do that using a more accurate (100%) "attack" that does no damage, and has a name that is more appropriate for emotive communication.

For example, zombies might have the option of "desperate reaching" as a 0 damage "emotive attack". The resulting message th target sees see might be something like this:

* A zombie reached for you with desperation for 0 damage.

Kevan could even set the server code to not report damage for 0 damage attacks, resulting in something like this:

* A zombie reached for you with desperation.

Some suggested "emotive attacks" and the resulting messages follow. Note that, as with the original clothing suggestion, voting for this suggestion should NOT be based on the premise that these specific options would be the ones Kevan implements. They are simply examples of what can be done. As with Clothing, more options could be added at a later date- even season specific options, like giving people cards at Christmas!

"Attack" option name Usable by Resulting report text seen by target
tap on shoulder survivors * Name tapped your shoulder with their finger.
menacing glare survivors and zombies both * Name glared at you with malice in their eyes.
begging grasp zombies * A Zombie grasped at you with pitiful gestures.

You might ask, what's the point? Who would use this? Well, as seen in discussion a lot of people would use it, for various reasons that all boil down to allowing one person to let another person know that the two of them were in the same location, without any need for using found equipment (such as FAKs), contact lists (as for cell phones), or metagaming, and without letting everybody in the location know (as speaking would). This would be quite useful for people who want to "count coup" on an enemy, or for zombies who want to get the attention of a specific reviver, but not that of somebody who might shoot them, and so on. And, it does so within an already existing mechanic (the attack report) and so would require minimal new server overhead and coding. Plus, unlike speech or other free-form text based emoting, it is not particularly open to abuse; you can't commit "text rape", and (since its an attack and costs 1 AP) spam would be at worst a minor issue; repeated 0 damage attacks would be condensed to a single report with "... and again" appended.

  1. Change - Don't like the flavour text, and there needs to be an anti spam mechanism. 10 pokes from the same person = 1 poke. Sorry if I missed anything. --  AHLGTG THE END IS NIGH! 00:15, 13 April 2008 (BST)
Please check discussion page. --Hhal 00:24, 13 April 2008 (BST)
  2. Change - The zombie flavor text is absurdly foolish, Tangling Grasp confusion anyone? Not to mention I have a personal problem with voting keep on something that's main purpose will end up being form of Mrh? or Gesture at Self, something that there are already too many ways of doing, there's no need to dumb down communication to make it even easier for everyone.--Karekmaps?! 10:19, 13 April 2008 (BST)
I specifically said the flavor texts I offered were NOT a material part of the suggestion. As for the others... well, yeah, but say one zombie wants to tap another? That doesn't let anybody else see their profiles, and thus preserves zombie anonymity; gesturing at another zombie, or speaking, would reveal the actors and maybe the targets profile link.
