20080801 No Diagnosis in the Dark
Swiers 18:24, 1 August 2008 (BST)
Suggestion type
balance change
Suggestion scope
use of diagnosis in the dark
Suggestion description
Simply put, the diagnosis skill would not function in the dark. If you can't see dead bodies or read graffiti, you logically also can't make out if the dark color on somebodies chest is fresh blood or old, making any prognosis about health a blind guess. Scent Fear and Scent Blood would still work (they rely on smell, not sight) but are zombie skills that only function when you are dead, and would remain such.
Aside from the obvious "realism" boost, this would serve several purposes. First, it gives zombies a slight boost in the dark, as they could target low HP survivors to kill, while survivors can not so easily heal them. Second, it makes dark buildings less appealing as safe houses for people who want to be healed. Third (and maybe counter to #2) it makes PK's in the dark a bit harder, because survivors can't single out wounded people to attack.

- Keep - Mais oui, calisse. --WanYao 20:13, 1 August 2008 (BST)
- Keep - I can't believe Yao's suggestion is receiving such criticism. Regardless, this is along the same lines of limiting survivor and PKer supremacy in the dark, and I support that. Equal handicaps for all players! Techercizer (Food) (TSoE) 21:08, 1 August 2008 (BST)

- Keep - Fantastic suggestion for dark nerfing for humans. DANCEDANCEREVOLUTION (TALK | CONTRIBS) 01:23, 2 August 2008 (BST)
- Small (optional) Change Make it that you can tell (up-rounded) to the nearest 10HP what they are e.g. a 28 HP appears as a 30, a 4 would appear as a 10, a 51 as a 60 etc. Not overly necessary, as the base idea on its own is still pretty damn good. --Blake Firedancer T E RNL? - Keep Cheers. --Galaxy125 04:01, 2 August 2008 (BST)
- Keep/Change - Along with Midianian, even in total darkness, most people with medical training can at the very least assume whether the survivor in question's status is lethal or minor in nature. I suggest turning diagnosis into a form of "Scent Fear", with near-dead survivors being asterisked in-game while in a darkened building. --Private Mark 07:27, 2 August 2008 (BST)
- Keep - Like it. Interesting flavour add and minor realism and balance boost for zeds. --Mad Dog Munro 08:33, 2 August 2008 (BST)
- Keep - Can't see people can't see their wounds.--Karekmaps?! 09:27, 2 August 2008 (BST)
- Keep - Logical and Fair. To evaluate the HP of a target you should have a clear sight of they. -- Bug MacLock 12:41, 2 August 2008 (BST)

- Keep - Sounds right to me. --Ocular Druuuuu 17:20, 2 August 2008 (BST)
- Keep it only makes sense if being in a lighted hospital improves medical treatment, then being in a darkened building should make treatment worse. Shooty08 19:28, 2 August 2008 (BST)
- Keep - Better than nerfing FAKs themselves. This makes dark buildings actually damgerous, instead of just Dark Fortresses. --BoboTalkClown 19:40, 2 August 2008 (BST)
- Keep - Makes sense, tactically interesting. --Pgunn 19:47, 2 August 2008 (BST)

- Keep - reasons as given. Choo choo! --Funt Solo QT 21:18, 3 August 2008 (BST)
- Keep – I actually believe this is decently balanced. Sure, it means PKers have more trouble spotting targets, but that includes BHers – and just what player type does the most hiding in dark buildings, hmm? Plus, makes genny-killing in dark buildings even more protective. ᚱᛁᚹᛖᚾᚨᚾᛏ 07:43, 4 August 2008 (BST)

Kill Votes
- If you can't make out fresh blood from old blood in the dark, put on some surgical gloves, and start poking at the spot. If it's fresh, you should have a little dash of wet blood on the tip of your fingers. --•▬ ▬••▬ • •••• •▬ ▬•▬• ▬•▬ #nerftemplatedsigs 21:04, 1 August 2008 (BST)
- Which would be equivalent to attempting to use a FAK, and finding out they are not wounded, which costs an AP. Or were you seriously saying you'd poke every stranger you see in what may or may not be a raw, painful wound, WITHOUT offering first aid? Good way to eat a shotgun shell involuntarily. Swiers 04:15, 2 August 2008 (BST)
- I didn't seriously mean poke the spot, as in poking the spot. More likely, swipe your finger across the spot and you'll know if it's fresh or not. Besides, unless you don't have diagnosis, you wouldn't be offering anyone a FAK. Even if you poke at it, and it hurts your patient, they'll be a lot happier when you patch them up. --•▬ ▬••▬ • •••• •▬ ▬•▬• ▬•▬ #nerftemplatedsigs 18:57, 2 August 2008 (BST)

- Kill - I didn't even know about the dark update but nontheless I still see it as a relatively useless change to the game --Diablor 22:44, 1 August 2008 (BST)
- Actually, he's referring to the dark buildings that came with the last update. Dark buildings are completely different from normal unpowered buildings in that they are completely dark when not powered, halving the hit rate of attacks and preventing repairs and body-dumping. --William Told 23:07, 1 August 2008 (BST) Non-author reply struck. --Midianian|T|T:S|C:RCS| 23:24, 1 August 2008 (BST)
- Kill/Change - There are things you could still do even in complete darkness to form a rough diagnosis. Just drop it to Scent Fear level of accuracy. --Midianian|T|T:S|C:RCS| 23:24, 1 August 2008 (BST)
- Kill - Although I see the logic of this suggestion, I prefer the current system. Billy Club Thorton T! RR 03:30, 2 August 2008 (BST)
- Kill/Change - I see the logic, like the poster above me, but it doesn't take all that much to form a rough diagnosis-anyone who is down to 10hp would be screaming their heads off anyway, easy for a medic to find ;). 11:46, 12 August 2008 (BST) unsigned vote struck --Rorybob 11:53, 12 August 2008 (BST)
- Or they'd be keeping as quite and hard to spot as possible, so as not to be easy for a zombie to find. Which may be why zombies have such a hard time eating in the dark. Swiers 14:51, 2 August 2008 (BST)

I'd be entirely OK if, instead of the current mechanic, survivors could "diagnose" other survivors in the dark, spending 1 AP to find out how many HP that single survivor has.
