Bob, You Rock! --Max Grivas JG,T,P! 20:09, 28 July 2006 (BST)

Thanks! :) Anything in particular you like about it? (It has yet to be used for policy votes, because it's too new.) –Bob Hammero ModB'cratTA 20:11, 28 July 2006 (BST)
I just think you rock for putting time behind systems that will ease things down the road. A mods work often goes unsung and its little things like this that add up in the longrun. To be particular the rulebox will make it a lot more obvious for folks who stuble into policy voting from announcment links with no clue about what their contribution should entail. Thanks again. --Max Grivas JG,T,P! 20:17, 28 July 2006 (BST)
Thank you very much. I really appreciate it. Sometimes, with vandals running around, misconduct cases springing up, etc., it can be hard to keep on doing the work, but it's comments like yours that make it worthwhile. And thank you once again for your marvelous work with the suburb maps. I doubt you've heard any praise for it (aside from you, I certainly haven't), but I'll bet that there's more than one person who's thankful for those being there. :) –Bob Hammero ModB'cratTA 20:23, 28 July 2006 (BST)

Objectivity

Nice work with that ruling. To be honest, I wasn't actually 100% sure of the applicability of the rule I referenced to the vote in question. Oh well. Just wanted to thank you for a good Arbitration. Cyberbob  Talk  08:27, 17 July 2006 (BST)

Hey, no problem. I'm glad you were okay with my work there. :) –Bob Hammero ModB'cratTA 09:55, 17 July 2006 (BST)
There are a couple of niggles I have with the ruling... but certainly nothing major. They have more to do with its wording than the actual ruling. Cyberbob  Talk  20:31, 17 July 2006

Thanks for the heads up

Arbitration

  • Thanks for taking on my arb case. Are you a mod yet? I keep thinking you are but last time you tricked me.-Banana Bear 21:10, 6 July 2006 (BST)

      • I don't want to sound like I'm trying to undermine you Mr. SoonToBeModCongratulationsYou, but on my account, you don't need to ban Proffffesor Legend X, as long as what I was hoping to get changed changes, I'm happy. I'm just not sure about banning over arbitration, ever since that whole, Brent bans Zar for not apologizing debacle. In the end its up to you though, and congrats again. -Banana Bear 21:56, 6 July 2006 (BST)

Ah yeah, those were the good old days. ;) Thank you, and thanks for giving me a second chance! –Bob Hammero ModB'cratTA 09:34, 11 July 2006 (BST)

Well the good thing is that everything does ask for conformation. (and seeing that I learned to work with it it's all idiot proof as well). You've got protect and delete above as tabs, both work by going to the appropriate page, simply click and follow the instructions you get. if the page is already deleted or protected, you'll see that the button changes to undelete and unprotect. and un-deleting or protecting works the same. I'd say just use the sandbox page to try them out. It's purpose is to let people learn about wiki editing and etc. Learning how your sysop powers work qualifies under that as well, If somebody gives you troubles just blame me.

Banning users is equally simple, under special pages you'll see at the bottem a couple of new pages one of them lets you ban people. (Yep, it's the Block user page) You can also go the block user page via recent changes. (handy with vandals like the 3 Page Vandle) you'll get (It'll ask for a user name, it has a dropdown list with ban times and a optional time imput thingamabob (needed if you want to ban somebody for 2 days) and a imput thingamabob to say why the user is getting banned. You can practise that by rebanning an adbot for an infite amount of time if you want (it really is very simple, you'll get everything right first time). Good luck.--Vista 10:25, 11 July 2006 (BST)

OK, thanks again. I think I'll get the hang of it. :) –Bob Hammero ModB'cratTA 15:46, 11 July 2006 (BST)

How did you add it?--The General T Sys U! P! F! 09:18, 12 July 2006 (BST)

Moderation bid question

I won't vote on it as long as I have my own promotion bid running and I can't speak of other voters ofcourse so I can offer you no insight on how your new promotion bid will go. But most comments that questioned your suitabilaty were about the problems you had with amazing and the short duration of your time here. Since then you have had no significant promblem with other users, Amazing is no longer present on this wiki and you have spend more time here. I'd say that you have listened to the imput and addressed the problems enough to at least try again. Good luck if you decide to do it.--Vista 00:06, 25 June 2006 (BST)

Thank you for your advice. I will definitely be running again next month, so we'll see what happens then. Thanks again, and good luck to you on your Bureaucrat bid! –Bob Hammero ModB'cratTA 00:16, 25 June 2006 (BST)

Re: Moderation

Might as well place my comment here :-) Yeah, I knew you applied for modship. I was going to vote for, but you pulled your bid before I managed to do that. So I think that kind of answers your question. And I see you have been busy with your contributions. There shouldn't be any problems, though the wiki population is rather unpredictable. --Brizth mod T W! 22:14, 20 June 2006 (BST)

Alright, well that certainly makes me feel better. Thanks in advance, and here's hoping that the crazy wiki ocean doesn't throw me, come July. :-) –Bob Hammero ModB'cratTA 22:21, 20 June 2006 (BST)

Codified Policies?

I've been following a lot of the Vandal Banning, Arbitration and Deletion proceedings to try to get a solid handle on what is allowable and what isn't. I've tried to be active where appropriate, and I've gotten some helpful information there, but I think that some of the issues would be simplified if someone began codifying the rules and policies and made a little pocket wiki full of precedent and law. I realize it's a daunting task, but it would simplify and accelerate rulings to be able to point to Rule 8, section 4 which states "No user shall...". Even a partial set of laws would be helpful, so any progress towards that end would be beneficial. I think it would be a good addition to the community, and vandals could be pointed in the right direction to ammend their behavior. It also would reduce some of the differences of opinion in some of the rulings, as a clear rule can't be disputed.
I picture us starting off with broad categories (each having a different wiki page) and then fill them in as moderators and higher ups see fit. This is all dependant on the assumption that such a system of law does not currently exist. What do you (and anyone else reading this) think? --Kiki Lottaboobs 14:57, 19 August 2006 (BST)

The more codified the rules, the less flexible we are in allowing good faith edits while actually punishing bad faith edits. Bad faith trumps everything except arb. –Xoid STFU! 15:46, 19 August 2006 (BST)
Well, certianly everything doesn't have to be codified, but it would give people a bechmark, and keep mods on the same page. For instance, a recent ruling was made where a ban was issued against a user who edited a group page he was not affiliated with and very recently, a mod ruled that a similar case was not vandalism. This leads me to believe that the rule isn't "Only users affiliated with a given group may edit that group's page" but something else, or something more complex. I don't propose that the law be a highly complicated structure, but without a skeleton rulings can be capricious, and will lack consistency. Xoid, do you think that perhaps even the broad strokes are a kind of Platonic ideal? --Kiki Lottaboobs 00:38, 20 August 2006 (BST)
The rule is this: any edit in bad faith is vandalism. There are innumerable moderator decisions, policy pages, arbitration rulings, unwritten rules, private agreements, convincing arguments, and all other manner of communications that make up the realm of Wiki Law. It's far broader and more nebulous than you would imagine — and that's a good thing. When you boil it all the way down, it's based partly on written rules, and partly on judgement, and that's exactly how it should be. I don't see any way to make a book of wiki rules, and I think such a thing would be extremely damaging. Which would you rather have: a moderator who is rigidly tied to a rule, and can never stray from it even in the most obvious cases, or a moderator who follows the rules, and is allowed to use his or her judgement in gray areas? –Bob Hammero ModB'cratTA 20:06, 20 August 2006 (BST)
I see what your concern is, and I agree with you - having too strict rules would be a detriment. However, I think it is a positive step to take some steps to educate the wiki of some of the more broad concepts. If I could beg your indulgence, I'd like you to review what I put together in User:Kiki Lottaboobs/Sandbox and let me know what problems you see in it. It may well be that the laws and policies here are too effemeral to be written down, but I'm confident that something can be done. Give it an honest read, if you disagree, tell me why. Thanks. --Kiki Lottaboobs 01:22, 29 August 2006 (BST)

Question about vandals

Hey, I can't figure out how to 'warn' vandals and mark them on the M/VB. Are only mods allowed to do that? Because I have just caught two moments of clear vandalism. --Luigi Galleani 14:48, 18 August 2006 (BST)

I'll field your question, since I'm online and Bob isn't :P
Anyway, you make a report on M/VB regarding the vandalism. Make sure to include diff comparison links of the edits in question. Cyberbob  Talk  14:53, 18 August 2006 (BST)

My second warning

I have to ask about this. Did you, or did you not read where this came from? --Gold Blade 21:36, 3 August 2006 (BST)

Please use level three headings at the top of subsections. Thanks. I read the vandalism report, and you obviously struck his vote when he provided a reason (he doesn't like that kind of idea). What more do I need to know? –Bob Hammero ModB'cratTA 21:38, 3 August 2006 (BST)
So i could say that Spam is a valid vote on every one of his suggestions because I dont like the way its worded? It comes to about the same validity.--Gold Blade 21:41, 3 August 2006 (BST)
Lyk lol bob. u shood lyk giv him a braek. lyk lol vandals have lyk feelins 2 u no. Sonny Corleone WTF RRF ASS 21:44, 3 August 2006 (BST)
It comes down to my judgement that you struck his vote in bad faith. Unless you have evidence to convince me otherwise, my warning stands. –Bob Hammero ModB'cratTA 21:45, 3 August 2006 (BST)
Why i struck it out: The way I interpreted the voting guidelines, Kill votes must tell why it was voted a such, what could use improvement and advising to revise the suggestion to better quality. Spam votes must show why the suggestion is unfixable, like the whole idea being broken. I decided that hating a suggestion because it falls into a certain category is not showing how the suggestion is unfixable. Not because the vote went against my idea. --Gold Blade 21:54, 3 August 2006 (BST)
Sorry. The rules state that a valid reason must be given, not that a particular kind of valid reason must be given. His reason — that he didn't like that kind of suggestion — is a valid one, so his vote was valid. If you don't like the current policies, you are free to start a discussion to change them. You'll find the rules to do that on the suggestions talk page. –Bob Hammero ModB'cratTA 22:00, 3 August 2006 (BST)
This s a pertfect example of a good (by my definition) Spam vote by Gage himself.[1]--Gold Blade

Can you please try to put your headers in the right place in the future? Anyway, it looks like the problem is fixed now. In the future, what you should do is:
  1. File a vandalism report on M/VB
  2. Start reverting his edits. You do this by clicking on "history," clicking on the revision just before his, clicking "edit," and then clicking "save" (moderators have a button that they can click that does all of that, but that's the process you'll have to go through)
Thanks for letting me know about the idiot, anyway. –Bob Hammero ModB'cratTA 20:16, 23 July 2006 (BST)

As I see it, you reported AND warned him yourself, when the usual practice is that the same moderator can't place a report and serve justice himself except for vandal alts. The General got a misconduct case for that reason, correct me if I'm wrong. --Matthew Fahrenheit YRC | T | W! 02:24, 18 July 2006 (BST)

Miltown suburb page

BobHammero, I finally saw your warnings on the bottom of my talk page. Apparently there is no convention for adding posts--many people add posts to the top so that new messages are the first ones owners see. If I had seen your warning sooner I would have replied to it immediately.

Regarding my editing of the Miltown Current Events page (what you call my vandalism), we Doom Patrolers are getting tired of Coalition members acting like they own the page. When events happen, as when Coalition humans begin objectively working in close cooperation with their undead friends, we feel it is an event worthy of posting. We think that visitors to Miltown should be made aware of the character of those around them, when possible. Tagging events in Miltown, in which "Another Coalition Victory" shows up on the wall of an NT building the day it is ransacked by Coalition zeds, suspiciously hint that live Coalition members are handling spray cans for dead ones. Further, secure buildings with survivors in them in the middle of a pack of secure buildings suddenly fall to Coalition zeds shortly after known Coalition humans show up to monitor where the humans are. How coincidental is it that this same pattern--Coalition zeds picking JUST the right building while leaving surrounding buidings untouched--happens over and over again? Is it really so unreasonable under such circumstances to post these events on the Current Events page?

I admit that stripping the page was an act of utter frustration that resulted from Rayvern moving several DP posts that documented the insidious acts of Coalition humans. I counter his charge of vandalism with one of my own. Factual Current Events belong on the Current Events page, don't they? Or must all current events be originated and vetted by the Coalition?

Rayvern has stated that his reason for moving DP Current Events posts is because there are no facts to back up the claims made. But a similar statement could be made about most posts on most Current Events sections for all of Malton. For example, right here in Miltown, what lack of activity was there on 26.20 that suddenly made the Coalition's 27.00 frequency the defacto band? I tell you the only lack of activity happened when Coalition humans GK every generator in town! How's that for a Current Event? But I guarantee that if we posted such fact-based events on the page, ol' Rayvern would edit them right away. In this case, though, I changed the short-wave box to indicate that 26.20 is the band for Miltown and 27.00 is the Coalitions' frequency, but even THAT change was reverted! Check the wiki, would you! 26.20 has been the Miltown band since long before the Coalition assembled their shortwave bureau or whatever they call it. Why is it that even fact-based Current Events aren't good enough for the Miltown wiki when they put the Coalition in an honest but not complimentary light?

I guess what I would like clarification on is, exactly what rules govern what constitutes an authorized Current Event? If the standard is that all Current Events must be fact-based with 95% confidence, then I feel that standard should be adopted system wide. Of course, that would result in the majority of information on most wiki pages being deleted. So what is the standard? And why does Rayvern have god-mode turned on in the editing department?

One final point: after posting the first Current Event message associating the curious tags celebrating Coalition zed victories with Coalition humans, I explicitly requested that no editing happen without first consulting with us. Rayvern ignored that request and instead wrote that he edited after *notifying* us of his intentions. In international affairs, one country doesn't fire a missile over another's airspace then send a notification of the fact unless the aggressor wants to duke it out. The civilized approach is consultation about what one *intends* to do, not notification. That act was the last straw. It shifted the nature of our relationship in the direction of a warlike state. And for that, I get threats of banning? puleeease...

Q240z 18:40, July 13, 2006 (EST)

OK look. Your post is quite long, so I'm sorry if I missed something in it, but here's the gist. I don't know anything about your group, or your competition's group, so I really can't say what is factual and what is not, who did what, who did what in response, or whatever. And no, you don't have to have "proof" or "authority" to put information on a suburb page. But from my viewpoint, your edits looked like vandalism: removing and editing content, blanking the page, etc. If you can show me that the edits I warned you for were in good faith, then I would be willing to reconsider my warnings. As it is however, I think your edits were in bad faith. Whatever is happening in the game, I don't particularly care. This isn't the game, this is the wiki for the game, and bad-faith edits are considered vandalism. If you are having a legitimate dispute over "ownership" of the suburb page (no one person or group, by the way, can claim ownership of a suburb page), I suggest you take it to arbitration. There are many unbiased arbitrators there who can help you resolve the dispute. –Bob Hammero ModB'cratTA 00:02, 14 July 2006 (BST)
I realise this may not be the correct place for this response, but the above essay does have a couple of points that leap out and beg for some kind of reply.
-Firstly....The only sections of posts that were moved were related to accusations against Coalition members - not actual events (It's worth noting that passing off false accusations as truth counts as Libel). In EVERY case the new location of each move was noted along side the reason for it's move - Nothing was deleted.
-Secondly, every group wants their frequency as the official one for the suburb. I have no issue with both being listed as suburb frequencies (unfortunately that particular change occured alongside some other strippings and it got lost in the reversion).
-Thirdly, Postings regarding Coalition GKing remain on the main page....why? Because I don't argue that point. It may put them in a bad light to some, but it's true.
-Fourthly, Each accusation has had a response on the discussion page. You just need to read them (I will admit that the discussion page is a little bit of a mess at the moment and it's not obvious what is in response to what, but I'm loath to start shifting everything about in case I lose something).
-Fifthly, requests to move new or repeated accusations to the discussion page were put up early and clearly, along with the reason why. Once the dispute is resolved a note can be added to the main events page stating that fact - but lets not fill up the first page visitors see with a dispute. You ignored this request for a tidy Miltown.
I'm hoping that whatever the DPers have twisted up can be untwisted so we can just get on with adding content to the Wiki, rather than hacking bits out of it with a blunt axe. (my apologies to bob for filling up even more of his page - I'll keep further posts on this subject on the Miltown discussion page) Rayvern 00:35, 14 July 2006 (BST)

It's strange that you post replies on your own page at the top, but warnings you post on the bottom of those you're threatening. The cheeky note was a nice touch, though.

And I apologize for imposing so much reading on you. I realize it's a burden for some.

But what, exactly, do you mean by good faith? Trying to improve the flow of information about current events in Miltown stikes me as a good faith effort, even if Ray and the clan don't like their dirty laundry being aired. Yet doing so results in Rayvern removing and otherwise editing (vandalizing?) our posts. When Rayvern demonstrated today his editorial god-mode regarding what constitutes Coalition-approved Current Events (we must have our case fully laid out, with exhibits and so forth), it inspired me to perform a good faith house cleaning of the page to make sure that the lofty Coalition standard is imposed on everyone fairly. Not only did that act get me a warning on the bottom of my page, but all of that "standardizing" work was reverted to boot! When I tried in good faith to make sure that the radio frequency information more correctly reflected the truth in Miltown, that got me warning #2 and AGAIN the truth was subverted. Yet Rayvern can remove fact-based posts from the main page without fear of reprisal just because he doesn't approve of the truthful content? Where's the good faith in that? Hell, your vandalism rule in this case every zed-loving spies' dream!

Bottom line: Rayvern instigated this problem, then whined to you when I responded in kind. Doom Patrolers don't think we own the main page and we have no interest in going to arbitration about it. I've already wasted enough time on this. But when we post events of the day, we expect them to remain. If our fact-based posts get edited by anybody but Doom Patrol members, we consider it vandalism and will respond in kind.

Q240z 21:03, July 13, 2006 (EST)

I'm going to say this only one time, and one time only. Notice how you deleted a bunch of shit off of my talk page? That's vandalism. That's in bad faith. You don't have the right to remove content off of my page. I frankly don't care if you were "cleaning up" the wiki; your edits violate our policies, and so, you were vandalizing. I don't care about who did what to whom in the game. This isn't the game. This is the wiki. If you have a legitimate complaint about the way that page is being managed, take it to arbitration. But you do not endear me by vandalizing my page as well. Unless you have some substantive proof, with links, to show me that you didn't deserve your vandalism warnings, I'm done with this issue. You can take it to Arbitration, or if you think your foes have committed vandalism, Vandal Banning, but I'm tired of your hyperbole. As for where I post replies, I have established specific guidelines for my talk page. For yours, a standard, run-of-the-mill talk page without established guidelines, I used the default assumption: new heading at the bottom. If you have a legitimate complaint, make it. If you're here to whine, get out. –Bob Hammero ModB'cratTA 02:42, 14 July 2006 (BST)

Miltown

Hi. I'm concerned about whether my own editing practices on the Miltown wiki page are appropriate. Q240z has repeated his earlier stripping of the page (though not to the same extent as before) and, while I do feel strongly about shifting some things to the discussion page, I don't want to get involved in any reverting of pages as I don't feel that would be appropriate. Can you offer any advice as to how I should proceed with this continuing issue? Rayvern 20:00, 13 July 2006 (BST)

As far as I can tell, your conduct is fine. Q240z's conduct, however, strongly resembles vandalism. You should revert any vandalism-like changes that he has made, and report him to Vandal Banning. I warned him once for his changes, and submitted a report on later ones (I don't think I'm able to warn him and report him for the same offenses). –Bob Hammero ModB'cratTA 21:10, 13 July 2006 (BST)
Thanks. I have reverted the page and put in another report at Vandal Banning. Apologies for the incorrect placing of my original post. --Rayvern
Not a big deal. If he keeps it up, just report him again and we'll take care of it. Actually, he should be banned for 24 hours when the next mod deals with my report on him. –Bob Hammero ModB'cratTA 21:25, 13 July 2006 (BST)

It's a fundamental flaw in the program. Unless they have gone and rewritten some of the major components while I wasn't looking, and never bothered upping the version number, then this is still there, even in the latest version. Hell, I had the same problem in 1.6.x and 1.7.x, so I'm certain that it will be at least 1.8.x before it gets nailed. Don't be so distrusting. He may have gone and acted like a douche, but there is no reason to ignore Grim s' own hard-learnt experience with the vagaries of MediaWiki. Okay. In most circumstances, I would say that banning might not be the best decision. However, given the circumstances, and the limited duration of the ban, I think you did the right thing. I hate to say it, but I really doubt whether or not either Scinfaxi or Amazing would be capable of stopping their drama-fest, much less stop arguing in the middle of the, as you aptly put it, shit flinging match. Ah. Well, a whole bunch of reasons, really. The biggest ones, however, are that I'm going to have far less time to devote to Urban Dead soon, and I've been growing gradually less and less interested in the game (and lately, even the wiki). I hardly ever log in and play anymore, to be honest. If I tried to keep on leading ASS, I would have eventually killed it, so the time eventually came where I had to just hand over control. –Bob Hammero ModB'cratTA 20:46, 15 August 2006 (BST)

Which is the way it should be. Would've preferred not to be so restrictive in the one case I ruled on, but I doubted the ability of the participants to at least be civil with each other. Too much bad blood. This in contrast was merely a momentary spat. –Xoid STFU! 06:47, 19 July 2006 (BST)

And on a side note, Go ahead and delete the throc stuff. Joke passed. And as more evidence to his small issue with swearing, he nearly let one slip while fileing the report in the first place. In Amazing v ASS, your entire point is that the case against you has no basis, so I have trouble understanding why you're pointlessly forcing your case onto overworked mods. I posted on Moderation/Arbitration/Amazing_vs_ASS:

"Amazing has a dozen arbitration conflicts pending and has a template on his user page about nuking this entire wiki twice, but he still manages to find at least 14 acceptable arbiters. ASS maintains that there is no case at all. I would humbly suggest that ASS "Stop wasting the arbiters and moderators time" (Tehasskickars). Isn't there still time for voting on it? What's really odd is that it doean't have the required 2/3 votes to pass, so I wonder if that means it has officially been rejected. Please respond as quickly as possibly because since the clock is ticking I'd hate to see an error overide the vote and have to go through this all again.Jjames 00:31, 30 August 2006 (BST)

I withdrew the policy, and since voting closed the moment I withdrew it, I also protected the page as per my rights as outlined on M/G. However, I urge you to file a misconduct case against me so that I can be justly banned from editing this wiki. –Bob Hammero ModB'cratTA 01:18, 30 August 2006 (BST)
Silly, Bob, I meant no such thing. I think you make great contributions to this wiki, I just don't always agree with you. I was just curious what happened. By the by, why did you pull the policy?Jjames 02:04, 30 August 2006 (BST)
It was quite clear that neither of my policies were going to pass. Rather than let them sit and gather more and more Against votes, I thought it would be faster to just kill them myself. –Bob Hammero ModB'cratTA 02:22, 30 August 2006 (BST)
That seems like a good reason to me. I do offer my condolences to see your policies shot down. I disagreed with them but felt your heart was in the right place. Might I suggest organizing an anti-hate pledge that allows people to organize in speaking out against hate speech without necesarily censoring it? Luigi Galleni already has one up, but he's an anarchist who hates sticks, so maybe you'd be better suited for the job. Oh and thanks for all the hard work in getting Kevan to install the software to check ip adresses.Jjames 03:29, 30 August 2006 (BST)

Retracted vote

A vevote by ERNesbitt was retracted from the group policy under discussion. I put in a colon to bump it from the list but was curios if this kind of thing might need to be moved to the discussion side or if it is even appropriate for me to make that type of edit. --Max Grivas JG,T,P! 21:50, 30 July 2006 (BST)

Yeah, it's perfectly fine that you made that edit. It was the right thing to do. Arguably, it could be moved to the suggestions page, but since he was trying to get the attention of the other voters, I'd say leave it. I don't think there are any hard rules regarding this kind of thing, so I just judge it on a case-by-case basis. –Bob Hammero ModB'cratTA 22:00, 30 July 2006 (BST)

Changes after policy changes

Well, I didn't know where else to ask this, but can you change Amazing's page back to what it was before the policy change? Because I haven't been paying much attention [to the wiki], and you cited his page as what would violate the new policy, but I don't know what the violation was. If that makes sense.Gwendolyr 03:29, 30 July 2006 (BST)

I'm not going to revert to an older version, but if you click the "history" tab, you can navigate to past revisions of his page and see what it looked like. For example, in this revision, you can see the fake "system message." Due to technical reasons, you can't see the "Amazing is watching" message, but it used to be "floating" over the Urban Dead logo. –Bob Hammero ModB'cratTA 03:33, 30 July 2006 (BST)
The past revision example was good. :) Thanks. Gwendolyr 03:50, 30 July 2006 (BST)

Prohibiting Content Outside of the Normal Page Area

I will vote for this policy, but i fear that my own userpage is violating these guidelines when they state: Alterations of a page's displayed title. As i feel my bias could betray me, can you tell me if my userpage is at fault? if it is, i wuold change it at once. --Matthew Fahrenheit Talk 08:23, 7 July 2006 (BST)

The only thing I see on your page that wouldn't be allowed is the "This user likes pies. Yeah, pies. A lot.", but that is not currently a violation of wiki policies, so you don't have to change it unless the new policy passes. –Bob Hammero ModB'cratTA 08:27, 7 July 2006 (BST)
As i said, i wanted to vote For on that policy. How wuold i look if i voted For and were in violation myself? Anyways, i just added that when i was learning about editing: i dont even like pies. At all. =P --Matthew Fahrenheit Talk 08:31, 7 July 2006 (BST)
Point taken. :) If you want to put that quote back up anyway, I can probably whip up a bit of wikimarkup for you that would give it a similar look, but in a more traditional place on your page. Just let me know. –Bob Hammero ModB'cratTA 08:32, 7 July 2006 (BST)

A Request

Please check this out, and give me your impressions. –Xoid STFU! 07:46, 27 May 2006 (BST)

I won't pretend that I'm very familiar with the policy discussion side of things yet. However, your proposal looks pretty reasonable. Has there been some controversy? (Aside from the incredibly hard to understand initial attempts at a policy discussion, geez.) --Bob Hammero TW!U! 08:01, 27 May 2006 (BST)
Controversy? Oh yes. Check out the vandal banning page. Amazing is going positively nuts over Lucero's removing the profile and avatar links — with a good reason. Hagnat said (paraphrasing) "Not enough votes, voting failed.", and Lucero and Amazing have been in an edit war for a little while. Maybe they still are.
Frankly, Lucero should have discussed it with Hagnat, and if he still disagreed with Hagnat's decision, should have brought it to Odd Starter's attention, taken it to misconduct or asked at least two other mods to comment on it.
But that controversy is not the only one. There is the Talk:Suggestions problem, where it failed to even get a "No", because of a lack of voter turnout. There is also the issue here that a policy (or at least the policies that use the currently flawed voting system) can fail, even if there are 19 "Yes" votes, simply because there isn't a 20th voter. If someone voted "No" then it would get passed.
To top it all off the rules differ from policy vote to policy vote, apparently, depending on whatever rules are set out for it to pass when it is first written up. This needs to be standardised. –Xoid STFU! 08:21, 27 May 2006 (BST)
Okay, I understand where this is coming from now. I have a suggestion: what if there were a two-step policy process to ensure that there's enough community interest in having a policy changed? First, a policy change must receive a certain number of Interested versus Uninterested votes (just a raw number, say 20, not a percentage) within, say, two weeks. If the policy gets fewer than the required number of votes, it's dropped. If the policy receives enough votes, it would then go on to a separate voting session, which would involve the rules you laid out earlier. --Bob Hammero TW!U! 08:54, 27 May 2006 (BST)
And if only 19 people decide to vote "Interested" and none vote "Uninterested"? The whole point of my suggestion was to prevent the sort of inaction that low voter turnout causes. –Xoid STFU! 09:42, 27 May 2006 (BST)
Good point. Well, I hope other people like your suggestion. It sounds very reasonable. --Bob Hammero TW!U! 10:48, 27 May 2006 (BST)

Voting law

I saw that a vote was stricken on one of the speedy deletions because the user in question did not have other edits. While I agree with this, I was wondering where reports of sockpuppet voters are made, what criteria votes are stricken and who can strike them. --Kiki Lottaboobs 20:08, 26 August 2006 (BST)

Sockpuppets are generally reported to Vandal Banning. Votes are struck when the user in question has already voted, has voted invalidly (wrong format, no timestamp, no signature, invalid vote, double vote, etc), is a sockpuppet, or is a permabanned vandal. Theoretically anyone can strike the votes, but I'd strongly recommend you leave it up to the mods. –Bob Hammero ModB'cratTA 20:17, 26 August 2006 (BST)

Suburb work

I've been enjoying your {{Suburbblock}} and started pasting in about 2/3's of them so far and wanted to get some feedback. Inside a few you had already completed I replaced some of the link names for blocks with the form presented in the style guide. Warehouse/Junkyard/... have coords and the/The St/St. See Barrville#Suburb Map. I left the display name exactly as it appears in game and only altered the link names. Also in as many cases as possible I included (suburb) to skip past disambiguation pages when appropriate. If there is anything I could change in the presentation let me know and I can flip back through them pretty quickly. Otherwise I plan to paste in the last third tomorrow. Thanks. --Max Grivas JG|T 01:44, 27 June 2006 (BST)

That's great! Thank you for your help. I was afraid that I was going to have to do all of the work myself, but if you're willing to help (and it looks like you are), that's a great relief to me. As long as the pages comply with the Location Style Guide, it's fine. In fact, linking past disambiguation pages, and to the proper warehouse/etc. pages, was going to be the next part of the work after I had created all of the suburb maps. How far have you gotten in adding the suburb maps? –Bob Hammero ModB'cratTA 04:45, 27 June 2006 (BST)
Actually I created an application that spits out the Suburbblock for any given suburb from my own data set. It seems to work well. I have placed 2/3 of the suburbs (alphabetically) I believe the last entry I made so far was Rhodenbank. If they look good to you I can past in the next 30 in a couple of hours. Take time to examine any one of those and let me know if you would prefer anything to be changed. Example: see how St Whatever appears on the map and in the link... I think it will be easier to fiddle with the script than edit each burb if you have any corrections to recommend. --Max Grivas JG|T 06:45, 27 June 2006 (BST)
Judging from the map you linked to, it looks fine to me, assuming that it's accurate (I didn't check location names or anything like that). I wonder if the "St" links should be written as "St." though. I'm not sure; on some pages (e.g., St. Pius's Hospital), I can see that nearby hospitals have been linked with the "." displayed, so we might want to follow that lead, but I don't think there are any concrete rules for this specific case. You might want to ask Xoid or Novelty for their opinions. –Bob Hammero ModB'cratTA 07:03, 27 June 2006 (BST)
Good Idea! I'll do just that. (solicit further opinions) Thanks. --Max Grivas JG|T 07:13, 27 June 2006 (BST)
After getting some great feedback from Xoid who made an example of Barrville, I altered the rules for my script and reposted the next 36 suburbs, Brooke Hills through Judgewood. I'll keep working my way down the list from there. Thanks again for the beautiful template. It is really a great addition to the wiki. I've felt the map info needed a place here for a long time. --Max Grivas JG|T 11:19, 27 June 2006 (BST)
My pleasure. Thank you for helping out! Now I don't have to worry about posting the rest of the suburbs. Do the suburbs up to Brooke Hills need to be redone? –Bob Hammero ModB'cratTA 19:08, 27 June 2006 (BST)
I have been approaching them alphabetically. Which placed Xoids redo of Barrville as the only burb before Brooke Hills in my list. After getting the feedback I basicly started over from the beginning. Which was a good thing since I also found anumber of locations which I display as review points on my map were being created as having a location_color of 'Fix IT'. Now that I have the thing working much better I have started a script that produces a {{Locationblockmerge}} outline. Pick a suburb and a block and it spills the beans for all blocks of the same type. If I can host it up somewhere available to the public it might be handy for filling in the blanks down the road. --Max Grivas JG,T,P! 21:30, 27 June 2006 (BST)
OK, I think thats all of them! Let me know if you encounter any errors or corrections you see in the future. Enjoy! --Max Grivas JG,T,P! 06:03, 28 June 2006 (BST)
Thanks again for your help. I appreciate it. –Bob Hammero ModB'cratTA 06:04, 28 June 2006 (BST)

Suburb block

I like what you've done. I was going to do something similar, but I see I don't have to now, which is good. I can concentrate on getting the pages up to scratch. That block would also be good on the category:suburb page as well and perhaps any grouped locations to begin with. --Nov W!, M, T 02:01, 22 June 2006 (BST)

Thanks, I'm glad you like it. Do you mean that it should be part of the Suburb category, or what? –Bob Hammero ModB'cratTA 02:44, 22 June 2006 (BST)
I think Novelty is referring to simply placing it on Category:Suburb, for which I wonder "Why?", if we are following Wikipedia's example in reforming the location pages, their categories and such, shouldn't we simply add the notice that the "Article on Suburbs is Suburbs. Blah Blah Blah", like categories with the same name as articles do in Wikipedia? –Xoid STFU! 00:53, 24 June 2006 (BST) bluh… just figured it out. Disregard that. –Xoid STFU! 01:32, 24 June 2006 (BST)
I was thinking that the map would be present on the Category:Suburb, e.g. the East Boundwood map on the Category:East Boundwood page to act as a master list for all the locations in that suburb. Oh and I will tweak if and when I find the time, which is not going to be soon. I'm starting up a largish project next month so that will probably take time away from this wiki. --Nov W!, M, T 15:58, 24 June 2006 (BST)

Re: Darvall Heights

Concerning this. I don't see any problem, not with the general idea nor details. The Darvall Heights page could do with an overhaul. Though placing a notice at the top could be good idea, with instructions to go to talk page if there are problem. If there are some larger edit wars, we always have the Arbitration (the real reason why it exists). --Brizth mod T W! 06:59, 27 May 2006 (BST)

Question

Are you working on the Locations Pages Project or the Master Locations List Project? The Master Locations List is just about getting the list prepared, and creating disambiguation pages. The Locations Pages Project is aimed at creating (or fixing) the locations' pages themselves.

PS: Good to see that others are using the Current Projects page now, I thought it was dead in the water. Hopefully seeing it in the recent changes section might give people the hint that collaboration on the big things would help. –Xoid STFU! 10:22, 23 May 2006 (BST)

Oy, good catch. I guess I'm really more interested in the other project, but I didn't see a page or a talk page for it, so I sort of assumed that the Master List project was the "good" one. My bad. Thanks. --Bob Hammero ASSU! 10:43, 23 May 2006 (BST)
With only one person on the Locations Pages Project (Novelty is… ? Keelhauled In Antartica? Married In Alabama? Who knows.), there didn't seem to be a need for a proper talk page. Issues of style and that go with the talk pages for the guide, but as to the project proper? I don't think there ever has been a talk page for it.
Since you said you were taking Caiger Mall and it's surrounding 'burbs and I'm still fixing pages that have been broken for months, I don't see us potentially getting in each other's way for some time. Sonny Corleone's been fixing pages too, and some members of FOXHOUND have been creating location pages for their stomping grounds. Misza's been doing miscellaneous stuff left right and centre, to a lesser extent Niiloman has been too.
Come to think of it, that is a lot more than "only one person", but I haven't had any problems with any of them yet, and I've barely spoken to most of them. –Xoid STFU! 11:15, 23 May 2006 (BST)
Okay. Makes sense, thank you (it seems as though there are so few location pages that have been created, I doubt we'll run into problems for a while). --Bob Hammero ASSW!U! 19:59, 23 May 2006 (BST)

Edit on Welcomenewbie

I think that {{Welcomenewbie}} is better now than before, but maybe if you made it a bit more... gray? That dark blue doesn't show very well inside black. Good job anyway.. (Also I'm not sure in what section should this go so this was as good as any.) --Niilomaan 01:39, 2 August 2006 (BST)

Perfect choice of sections. :) Good point about it looking a little stark; I'll fix that. And thanks, I'm glad you like the change. I thought it was looking a bit hard to read before. –Bob Hammero ModB'cratTA 01:40, 2 August 2006 (BST)
Perfect. (Well least before next edit on it.) I'm off to bed. So tired that I mess stuff up more than fix it. --Niilomaan 01:47, 2 August 2006 (BST)
Well, looks like the boxes had to come no matter what I tought about them =P. Looks good anyways. Maybe we could move "The Suggestions page" header to the bottom, to tip off new users to practice on their own user pages and talk pages before actually messing up with community pages. And add a tip that the standard on user's talk pages when there are no written rules is to add the messages at the bottom of the page with a level 2 header. I'm sorry for my recent inactivity: sometimes life hits hard =S. --Matthew Fahrenheit YRC | T | W! 02:02, 2 August 2006 (BST)

Our nice template has a problem

Hey again Bob! Sorry to bother you, but the Welcomenewbie template has a problem: In order to prevent newbies to edit the different sections of the template by mistake, I added a __NOEDITSECTION__ tag on it. The problem is that the tag doesn't limit itself to affect the template alone, but involves the whole page it's placed(in this case, newbies talk pages) as well. I suppose we can edit the sections ourselves so they only "look" like wiki sections in formatting tough they are functionally just pieces of text, but if there's a choice please enlighten me. --Matthew Fahrenheit YRC | T | W! 05:28, 14 July 2006 (BST)

Try putting a <noinclude> and </noinclude> around the "magic words." –Bob Hammero ModB'cratTA 05:33, 14 July 2006 (BST)
As I tought: that nullyfies (it's the word OK?) the effect of the tag whenever you post it on some page, so newbies can (mistakingly or not) edit it again... --Matthew Fahrenheit YRC | T | W! 05:38, 14 July 2006 (BST) Any more ideas? --Matthew Fahrenheit YRC | T | W! 05:45, 14 July 2006 (BST)
Nullifies is what you're looking for. Well, I'd just take the tags out then. Probably best to just let them make the mistake of editing the sections if they're that dim. Actually, you could request that the page be protected, too. –Bob Hammero ModB'cratTA 05:54, 14 July 2006 (BST)
Oh... if the page gets protected, it will be a lot harder for me or anyone else to edit it again, as most Project Welcome members aren't moderators if I remember it right. I'll rather try to emule the format of section's titles instead of adding actual ===sections=== to it. But I'll do it tomorrow, it's pretty late where I live ZZzz-_- --Matthew Fahrenheit YRC | T | W! 06:04, 14 July 2006 (BST)

Well Bob, you make me feel like a dinosaur. --Matthew Fahrenheit YRC | T | W! 20:46, 17 July 2006 (BST) Also, what's the difference between <span> and <font> tags? --Matthew Fahrenheit YRC | T | W! 20:51, 17 July 2006 (BST)

In a nutshell, <font> and the like are from the old days of HTML, where it was customary to represent the appearance of something along with the content. These days, with XHTML and CSS taking the place of plain HTML, it's preferred to use the style attribute to specify styling, because it keeps the "visual" components separate from the "structural" components. <span> is simply an inline structural component; it's invisible all on its own (a block-level parallel is the <div> element). More than you wanted to know? :) –Bob Hammero ModB'cratTA 08:32, 18 July 2006 (BST)
Actually yes O_O. Coming back to the template, there are some practical issues that trouble me: Up to this moment, i'm the only one that used the template, and based on my experience I have been modifying it (with your help, obviously). Now, after the __NOEDITSECTION__ magic word problem has been solved, I can concentrate in minor problems, such as aesthetic ones. It has come to my mind that when I place it on any page, I do it like this:
{{Welcomenewbie}}
--~~~~
This works just OK, but the result is the template itself with my sig at the end and there's no heading where the newbies can press the "edit" button and delete the template tag if they want to. Most of them end up with my template as their first edit on their Talk page, and the lack of other headings forces them to edit the page as a whole. It's too complicated if I strip off the whole title and everytime we want to use it we type a new heading? the usage wuold be like this:
== Welcome to our Wiki ==
{{Welcomenewbie}}
--~~~~
Tell me what you think. --Matthew Fahrenheit YRC | T | W! 08:50, 18 July 2006 (BST) EDIT: I must be one anoyying son of a... Almost all the edits on your talk page are either you or me --Matthew Fahrenheit YRC | T | W! 08:52, 18 July 2006 (BST)
Nah, I don't mind. The title of "most active poster on Bob's talk page" varies with time. Check my talk archive for some past champions of that medal. :)
Now, to answer your question: this is a tricky one. Let me think about it, but in the meantime, I'd get Xoid's input on this one too. –Bob Hammero ModB'cratTA 09:16, 18 July 2006 (BST)
Yeah, Xoid. The only reason that I didn't tell him about the template is that (oddly enough) he isn't a member of Project Welcome. However, he "wastes" plenty of time giving different tips to newbies. Maybe you can invite him to the group, or at least introduce him to the template? --Matthew Fahrenheit YRC | T | W! 09:20, 18 July 2006 (BST)
He knows about it; he hasn't joined it out of choice. If I were you, I'd just put a note on his talk page yourself. –Bob Hammero ModB'cratTA 18:59, 18 July 2006 (BST)
Definitely out of choice. Sure, I help people out, but that's not to help them out, it's to stop them from annoying me with their inept usage of the wiki, an unsubtle and very important difference. Regardless, I say usage should be in the form of:
== Welcome to our Wiki ==
{{Welcomenewbie}}
--~~~~
Moderators have to give a heading for vandal warnings. (Or they bloody well should), and this isn't much of an inconvenience. –Xoid STFU! 00:06, 19 July 2006 (BST)

Template Project

Hey Bob. When I found newbies on the Suggestion's page (i never found them elsewhere, looks like they like to screw up that page in particular) I mostly try to symphatize and give them some guidelines to start. These basic guidelines are always the same, so I made up this, so i don't have to write different (and maybe not so well writed) versions of the same everytime. I'm planning on making a template of that, and adding the link to the Project Welcome mainpage so everyone can save themselves the boring repetition of the same old speech. As my grasp on the english language isn't perfect, could you take a look at it? If you want to add (or delete) some lines, please let me know. Anything that helps is welcome. --Matthew Fahrenheit YRC | T | W! 08:37, 12 July 2006 (BST)

Good idea! Why do it as a template though? Seems like you could make a subpage of the Project Welcome page, or, better yet, make it a page in the Help namespace, and just link people to it. Or do I not understand the idea?
OK, as far as editing goes, changes in bold, things removed with strikeout:
"As I can see" ... "It's OK to be new" ... "At the same time, we understand"
"To do so is considered as vandalism."

I'm changing the text, thanks for checking it! My idea was to just use the template in the Talk Page of every newbie we come across. Of course, we can just copy it, or make both the template and the new page. I don't know what wuold be the most useful of those choices, what do you think? --Matthew Fahrenheit YRC | T | W! 09:07, 12 July 2006 (BST)
There's a change you want to make that says "We highly recommended". That sounds like we did in the past... you're sure? --Matthew Fahrenheit YRC | T | W! 09:16, 12 July 2006 (BST)
Oops! Good catch. That should be "We highly recommend." I see what you're talking about now with the template. Good idea. You might also want to mention, then, that they can delete it from their talk page if they want to, just to avoid confusion. –Bob Hammero ModB'cratTA 09:19, 12 July 2006 (BST)
Last thing before I go to sleep: There's a part in the end where it says: You can withdraw and resubmit it with changes later. While this is valid, I didn't want to include the word "withdraw" because most newbies mistakingly delete the whole suggestion (vandalism) instead of replacing it with "Suggestion withdrawn by the author" or something along these lines. --Matthew Fahrenheit YRC | T | W! 09:31, 12 July 2006 (BST)

Where...?

Can I find information on what pages to edit and help out on? UDWiki doesn't have a "This is a Stub, you can help..." format like wikipedia, so I was wondering if I just wandered around looking for things to fix, or if there was a consolidated page of things that need more information etc..

And by the way, thanks for being a nice "older" user who welcomes people here. It's hard to get your feet wet, and you seem to have the kind of personality that makes the introduction to UD, and the wiki in general, a good place to share ideas and thoughts. - Bango Skank 04:37, 11 July 2006 (BST)

Good question. There are a few large projects underway, and you can read about these on the Current Projects page. You might also look at UDWiki:Maintenance for ideas about what to work on. For a third place, you might check the Project Wiki Patrol page -- that's a project that I founded, and those of us who are a part of it go around fixing things on the wiki, so there's a large list of places to find things to do on that page. Other than that, there aren't really any central directories of pages needing work that I know of. Pretty much every page on the wiki could use a little tweaking one way or another, so just look around. I would advise you, however, to get your feet wet with editing in the sandbox first, if you aren't already experienced with wikimarkup and the like.
Thanks for the compliments, as well. :) I remember when I was new to the game and the wiki, and I try to be helpful to people when I can. If you have any other questions, don't hesitate to ask. –Bob Hammero ModB'cratTA 04:51, 11 July 2006 (BST)
One quick addendum: I would stay away from the Help namespace, the Moderation pages, and things like that, until you're more familiar with the wiki and better known by some of the more active users here, just to be safe. And under no circumstances should you edit pages in the User namespace (talk pages are usually fine though). That might be considered vandalism. –Bob Hammero ModB'cratTA 04:53, 11 July 2006 (BST)

Wiki problems

Your guess was well placed, because frankly, I have a weak grasp on how to do anything here. Ugh, so confusing. Why couldn't this just be a normal forum? --Veragoot 22:23, 24 May 2006 (BST)

The wiki editing commands are a little strange at first, but you'll get used to them. If you have any questions, feel free to ask me for help. You might also want to check out the Sandbox, which is a good place to experiment without worrying about messing up any important pages. --Bob Hammero W!U! 22:26, 24 May 2006 (BST)
well thanks for all the positive reinforcement bob, but I think I'm going to stick to forums for now. Maybe one day I'll acquire a working brain and will actually understand how this site's "forums" work. Because frankly, all I've done is mess up and baffle myself to the point where I can't think straight. And that's no good for me because I've got MCAS tomorrow and I'll need my brain ship-shape.--Veragoot 22:30, 24 May 2006 (BST)
Good luck! Hopefully we'll see you around here in the future sometime. --Bob Hammero W!U! 22:33, 24 May 2006 (BST)

Suggestions

For discussion about the suggestions page

Wunderpost

I haven't attacked you, I pointed out (maybe with unnecessary sarcasm) that you always trashtalk whatever you dislike instead of explaining yourself, using rude language / excessive profanity as well. Attacking you would be doing what you're doing to me - calling me a dickhead, accusing me of being mentally retarded, and saying things like "What the fuck do you think you're on about?" You know what's retarded? Getting mad during internet debates. I am posting this calmly and I hope if you aren't calm now then you calm down before replying to me. Also rather than replying at all it would be more constructive to help me work through your problems with the suggestion - see my new post on that page. Rheingold 09:16, 29 July 2006 (BST)

I always trashtalk whatever I dislike, never explaining myself, and always using rude language and profanity? Really? Huh. To answer the rest of your comment: I am quite calm. I'm just sick of seeing people who don't know what they're doing try to mess around with technical suggestions. Let me be blunt: do you have any programming experience? I'm working on my own version of the "bots are bad" idea, so just wait. I actually do know what I'm talking about. –Bob Hammero ModB'cratTA 09:27, 29 July 2006 (BST)

One minute please. –Bob Hammero ModB'cratTA 03:20, 29 July 2006 (BST)
Okay. Gage suggested a similar idea to yours, so first go look at my response to him. Now the thing you have to think about is, what is something that a bot would do that a real player wouldn't ever do? Even something as innocuous as logging in, spending all of your AP barricading, and then logging out is something a real player might do — even if the barricades are already at EH. –Bob Hammero ModB'cratTA 03:24, 29 July 2006 (BST)

So what would we be looking for? Constant checks or what? -- 343 U! 03:31, 29 July 2006 (BST)

No... many players who have donated constantly check barricade levels. Cyberbob  Talk  03:33, 29 July 2006 (BST)

Recent Suggestion

I am new to these forums, and I recently posted a suggestion about DNA insertion. I am sure you will remember it, due to the entirely unecessary flaming you did in response to it. Firstly, my suggestion was incomplete, and I realize that now. It was my first suggestion, so I apologize for that. Yes, you're right, I have never tried playing as a zombie, so maybe it was a bad idea. But what I absolutely can't believe is that you responded so violently to my suggestion. Im a noob at the game and in these forums, I will openly admit that! So I made some mistakes, and you, a user who puts the Project Welcome link on every single one of your signatures, completely flamed me for it. I cannot believe you dared to call yourself a member of a group that makes new players feel welcome, because I can tell you this for sure--I am NOT feeling welcome here at all. In case it makes you feel better, I have completely deleted my suggestion, I am not moving it to the talk page because I feel that it would only be flamed there too. This wiki is not a welcoming place, as I have now learned. I know this message seems really stupid, so go ahead and delete it if you like. I just wanted to let you hear what I think first. I'll end by saying I've read some of your posts in the past, and I admired your intuitive ideas and helpful thinking, but my very first interaction with you really disappointed me. --Abslch 20:30, 10 July 2006 (BST)

Actually, I will take the time to respond to this. First off, I'm sorry for snapping. I've been a bit on edge lately, and I shouldn't have bitten your head off like that. I've had suggestions killed and spaminated myself, so I know it isn't fun -- and people (including me, unfortunately) can be extremely hostile on that page, due, I think, to the large number of poorly thought-out suggestions that appear there. I moved the suggestion to the talk page, because it is vandalism to remove it completely (I had reported you to Vandal Banning, but I retracted it after reading this comment). I'm sorry that I've disappointed you; thanks for saying you admired my ideas (in the past), and I hope you'll forgive me. I was a newbie here and in the game at one point as well, and I remember what it was like. I think you will find that the rest of the wiki, by and large, is welcoming. –Bob Hammero ModB'cratTA 20:39, 10 July 2006 (BST)
Thanks very much. You know, I flamed back at you too, and I'm sorry about that. I really didn't mean to make a commotion, or make anyone else feel bad, I see you really mean well now. I assure you I won't hold a grudge, I hope you won't either, hopefully my next suggestion will be better ;-) Thanks again! --Abslch 21:21, 10 July 2006 (BST)
Aww! Group hug! --Paradox244 21:48, 10 July 2006 (BST)
No grudges. I think I need to take a break from the suggestions page (and the Vandal Banning page) for a while... it just gets to be stressful. Anyway, if you have any wiki questions, I'm happy to help.
However, based on my experience on the suggestions page, I'd like to make a suggestion for your future suggestions: first read Suggestions Dos and Do Nots, then read Frequently Suggested, then propose your idea on Talk:Suggestions and let it sit there for at least a few days. If you appear to have support for it there, then put it on the main Suggestions page. This will probably let your suggestion live well enough so that you only have to revise it once or twice more before it's approved. It sucks, but that really is the best way to give your idea a fair shot. –Bob Hammero ModB'cratTA 02:47, 11 July 2006 (BST)
I think that that is good advice for me two. You rule Bob, can I call you Bob, and thanks a million! --Paradox244 19:49, 11 July 2006 (BST)

Suggestion tweak

When you said to tweak the numbers in my suggestion, what did you have in mind? --Paradox244 19:05, 9 July 2006 (BST)

Well, probably lower percentages, for one thing. But I also think that the boost to the percentages should differ for each weapon. –Bob Hammero ModB'cratTA 19:08, 9 July 2006 (BST)
Could you give some more details? I withdrew it and moved to discussion BTW. But do you think the concept is sound? --Paradox244 03:25, 10 July 2006 (BST)
I'll get back to you soon about this, a little busy right now. –Bob Hammero ModB'cratTA 20:40, 10 July 2006 (BST)
Okay. --Paradox244 21:49, 10 July 2006 (BST)
OK. I think the idea is possibly viable, but you need to take this into account: nobody will accept a suggestion that would boost any of the lesser-used weapons to the fire axe's usefulness, or above. It's generally accepted that the fire axe should be the best melee weapon. That said, I would go to Ember's MBR information, which is pretty much the best way to rate weapons in UD. Right now, the Fire Axe has an MBR of 1.2. I think you could safely get away with boosting knife to 1.0, pipe/bat to 0.75, and crowbar to 0.5, so figure out whatever percentages you want that would do that. I would also ask Ember for his advice and assistance. In my experience, he's more than happy to help advise for weapon-tweaking suggestions (one of my peer approved suggestions, "Axe Sharpening," passed in part because of his assistance). –Bob Hammero ModB'cratTA 02:54, 11 July 2006 (BST)
Would it be better if I split it up into multiple suggestions? That seems to be best if I will address multiple ones, doing it induvidually would allow for better control. Should I? --Paradox244 03:29, 11 July 2006 (BST)
If you want to. You need to remember, however, that you are allowed a maximum of three suggestions per day, and that if people don't like your first few suggestions, they might start to snap at you if you continue making ones along the same lines. –Bob Hammero ModB'cratTA 03:57, 11 July 2006 (BST)

Suggestions Pages

Hey, I've noticed that you've recently been putting shortcut thingys onto the suggestions pages. Could I suggest a small change (so I don't have to do it)? Just so the layout is nicer looking could you add the code in like this instead just after the TOC decleration?

{| align="left" cellspacing=0 cellpadding=0 style="margin-bottom: .5em; float: right; padding: .5em 0 .8em 1.4em;" |{{shortcut|Shortcut Code}} |}

It just makes things nicer looking by removing the white space that can be seen when it's added without this. Have a look at peer reviewed and rejected to see what I did. I'm just letting you know just incase you plan on adding it to any of the other suggestions pages. Well thats what I think would be good anyway. - Jedaz 10:51, 7 July 2006 (BST)
No problem. Thanks for bringing it to my attention. –Bob Hammero ModB'cratTA 10:55, 7 July 2006 (BST)

Centaurs... thing

Well, i know pretty much about the WTFCENTAURS vote, since Undeadinator first used it, going trough Mr Aushvitz suggestion's and finally when only Mattiator was willing to use it. It's just NOT FUN anymore, but i do understand that what you're trying to tell me is that it has become part of the culture of this Wiki as a way of saying "this suggestion/comment/thing is one of the most ridicuolus i have seen". Taking that on account, i will cease to strike out these kind of votes, as long as the "WTFCENTAURS" word doesn't form part of the vote, but of the reasoning. --Matthew Fahrenheit Talk 18:47, 3 July 2006 (BST)

Stiking out

Just letting you know when you stike peoples votes out because they don't sign properly it would be a good idea to tell them how to otherwise they probably won't ever know. It just makes things more friendly like and what not. - Jedaz 08:35, 2 July 2006 (BST)

Good point, thanks. I'll do that. –Bob Hammero ModB'cratTA 08:38, 2 July 2006 (BST)
I just made a minor alteration to the Suggestion voting template, just use this [[#How to sign|How to sign properly]] link on any page with the template, and it will take them to the instructions. –Xoid STFU! 08:48, 2 July 2006 (BST)

Tips

On some vote like this:

  1. Keep - Same reason as why I voted keep last time. It's good. "We gonna buy a small little house with a nice fat stove. And we gonna live off the fat of the land. And we'll get cages for the rabbits. And have some alfalfa to feed to them rabbits." Sonny Corleone

Should i strike out the invalid part of the vote (all between the "") or ask the user on his user page to do so? Sonny modified it already, but just as an example.

By the way, votes like Mookiemookie one here are the "Trolling based votes" im supposed to evade, right? Answer in my talk page please. --Matthew Fahrenheit Talk 07:37, 2 July 2006 (BST)

Vote arguments

Just as a question: Aren't you being too harsh with the "invalid reason" strike out? Evading the countless ocassions were votes were filled with crap and strikes didn't happen, Keep votes implicitly state that the user likes the suggestion (unless some strange cases were users actually say the contrary) and even i don't want to think a reason for every keep vote i make. I agree that Kill, Spam and Dupe votes demand proper reasons, but you could strike out all the nonsense and leave the "Keep" alone when striking out Keep votes like Sonny's, so they can learn they're not that funny. --Matthew Fahrenheit 06:12, 1 July 2006 (BST)

First, let me say that I think the rules on the Suggestions page are almost fatally flawed. I disagree with many of them, and I think they need to be rewritten. I'm not even the only one who thinks this, but it's very difficult to make any sort of change to the policies on that page, just because so many people visit it.
That said, I generally try to be lenient when it comes to striking out a vote on the grounds of "no reason given," but in the two cases to which you're referring, I could see literally no possible justification anywhere in the votes as to why they were voting the way they were voting. Unfortunately, one of the broken rules for that page states that "Votes that do not have reasoning behind them are invalid. You MUST justify your vote." In other words, it's not enough to say that you want it kept or killed, but you have to explain why.
In any event, if you strike a vote, you have to strike the entire vote, not just part of it. I would be glad if the rules were different, but unfortunately, they aren't. Those votes provided no justification of any sort, and I'm tired of seeing crap like that. Usually there is at least a few words that are related enough to the game that I can overlook it, but in those cases, nothing. –Bob Hammero ModB'cratTA 06:30, 1 July 2006 (BST)
The same rules state that Only moderators may remove troll-based votes and they do so with a strikeout <s></s> in order to preserve the trolling removal for posterity, and so i understand that moderators have given you the confidence to strike out votes (i think i readed that discussion somewhere). If a vote shows obvious "lack of content" (crap) as previous stated, can any user strike it out in good faith? I say so because obviously i wuold be glad to help. --Matthew Fahrenheit 06:47, 1 July 2006 (BST)
You're correct. I spoke to several different mods, and they told me that I was allowed to continue maintaining the suggestions page as I have been doing, provided that I followed the letter of the rule: i.e., votes that are purely trolling (insulting, flaming, etc.) I am to leave alone.
I don't know of any reason why I would be special in being allowed to "police" the page, except perhaps that I've shown a strong interest in keeping it running smoothly, and that I've been careful not to overstep my bounds. I would be happy to have another user help me watch over the votes. Just make sure that you leave trolling votes alone, don't overstep your bounds either, and be sure to note under the vote what you did and why (but don't use the term Note, because that is reserved exclusively for moderators). If you want to be extra careful, you might consult with some mods so that you have their explicit approval to cite if someone asks you why you're striking out votes. –Bob Hammero ModB'cratTA 06:55, 1 July 2006 (BST)
Ok, thanks! I'll start next week when i get word of some moderator. Mostly i'll try to emulate your style, so don't worry too much about that. And for the suggestion rule's change, i can think of a patch or two, but they're just patchs, the main concerns are not adressed. I'll try to familiarize myself more on the suggestion's page and then maybe we can work some changes. --Matthew Fahrenheit 07:17, 1 July 2006 (BST)

User:Contaminated

NEW COMMENT: Hope you like my vote, I merely wanted to make the core idea actually work, and I am sorry if you are too caught up in ego to let it soar. The mechanics you came up with reallyare that bad, but format and general idea were quite good, so I took what you did right and added to what I do well. I am sorry you felt slighted, and I admit I was a bit condescending but the two things together really are something to be proud of. The mechanic I came up with were original and nothing like yours and much better, it is like comparing a mud pie and cherry pie the same because they use the same recipe format. (a crust with filling)--Contaminated 23:55, 19 June 2006 (BST)

Thanks for your apology. However, since this is my talk page, I'm going to be absolutely blunt with you.
  1. Don't accuse me of being "caught up in ego." It isn't about ego, it's about being tactful and following the rules of the wiki.
  2. However bad my mechanics might have been, it's extremely rude to go about advertising it as you have. Telling someone "OMFG U HAEV BAED MEKANICS ADN YUO SUCK!!11" is a great way to have someone flame you back.
  3. Yes, my formatting and general idea were quite good. Thanks. Apparently, you thought they were so good that you just copied and pasted, and changed a couple of things here or there. Guess what kids, that's called plagiarism! In higher education, that would earn you an F and an expulsion. Here on the wiki, you're lucky it just gets you flamed.
  4. Your analogy is broken. You want to use my core idea in your own suggestion? Great. I have no problem with that. I have a problem with you calling mine shit, but then feeling free to just use my text with a few slight changes put into place. See, it's not so much mud pie versus cherry pie, it's more like cherry pie versus cherry pie with little turds sprinkled on top. Not much difference there.

Careful how you advertise. If you bring it up on too many group pages, you'll get banned (see M/VB, there's plenty precedent for that now). But I'm in favor of lots of guns over the parade, myself, since that will be more effective in taking out the zombies near Caiger. –Bob Hammero ModB'cratTA 19:05, 5 August 2006 (BST)
Oh, we'd actually like to combine the two Bob. We're only advertising on groups with roots in Crossman, or those with glorious members of the white brotherhood. Send us a date with the necessary time frame if you can Bob so we can plan our events accordingly. Scinfaxi 19:10, 5 August 2006 (BST)

Lud Lum

Found in -location- when I busted in with an alt. What are the odds? –Xoid STFU! 06:47, 28 June 2006 (BST)

No kidding? Oh well, not really a long-time enemy or anything. Speaking of ASS, though... if you want to screw around with our page, go ahead. You don't have to if you don't want to, but it's definitely sub-par, in my opinion. What can I say? I designed it when I was less experienced with wiki formatting, and I've never gotten around to redesigning it. –Bob Hammero ModB'cratTA 06:51, 28 June 2006 (BST)
Personally, I like the simplistic format. There are probably some optimisations and straightening up that can be done though. Meh. What can I say? I play a very simplistic browser based game that practically none of my friends have heard of. I tend to have low standards in terms of "prettiness". As long as something is neat an organised, I'm happy.
So I assume that I was correct in not sending out an announcement? While it wasn't like I would've been zerging in the classic sense, doing so would've been multi-abuse in my eyes. Glad to see we have more morals than some groups. *cough* CDF *cough*. –Xoid STFU! 06:57, 28 June 2006 (BST)
I know what you mean about simplicity (even though my user page is a little fancier than most pages on this wiki). The things that annoy me to all hell, though, are typos, depreciated HTML, misused wikicode, things of that nature. How hard is it to learn XHTML and CSS, properly quote your element attributes, and learn the goddamn wiki formatting? </rant style="rant-format: brief;">
Anyway, it wouldn't have been a huge deal if you had sent out an announcement, but I'm glad you didn't. We've been allied with groups in the past who used alts, and while Jimbo and I looked the other way, we've never used alts ourselves. I have characters other than "Bob Hammero," but they're off doing completely different things (e.g., I have a zombie in the RRF who is currently off munching brains in Dulston). As far as I know, no other members of ASS use alts either. –Bob Hammero ModB'cratTA 07:05, 28 June 2006 (BST)
Yes, I can tell from our UDTool list that some less-than-questionable tactics were employed by our allies. Also, about Multi-Abuse: frankly, this sort of thing about the CreedyDF pisses me off —, as far as I'm concerned no group should have alts in it. They still play a mean game, but it is the really small groups, the DEM and the RRF that tend to abide by this "rule". –Xoid STFU! 07:13, 28 June 2006 (BST)
I absolutely agree. So many groups seem to employ alts with barely-tangible excuses. I applaud the RRF for playing a clean game. I mean, it's one thing to cheat if you're playing a single-player game, but it's unfair to other players -- especially those of us who refuse to cheat -- when you're playing an online game like UD. –Bob Hammero ModB'cratTA 07:22, 28 June 2006 (BST)
Well, whether or not you should have alts in a group is a subjective argument, isn't it? Some groups have alts (the CDF is NOT the only one), others don't. It comes down to individual group policy. Cyberbob  Talk  07:27, 28 June 2006 (BST)
A group's right to use alts ends right at the point that the alts start interacting with other characters. If I had "Bob Hammero" and "Bob Hammero 2000," it wouldn't be very fair if I started using them both to attack another group, now would it? –Bob Hammero ModB'cratTA 07:31, 28 June 2006 (BST)
Exactly. Which is why the CDF absolutely fobids the use of both alts in the same task. They must be completely separate, both physically and in their jobs. Cyberbob  Talk  07:35, 28 June 2006 (BST)
What about information sharing though? Say I use a second character to scout around, and another to attack. That's tantamount to having gotten another 50 AP unfairly, since the 50 AP/day is supposed to be split between all actions. –Bob Hammero ModB'cratTA 07:37, 28 June 2006 (BST)
If the jobs are truly separate, then information from one alt will be irrelevant to the other. Cyberbob  Talk  07:38, 28 June 2006 (BST)

You mean like Dead.gif? Or do you mean the upload page (Special:Upload)? That's always available on the sidebar of every page. –Bob Hammero ModB'cratTA 23:32, 20 August 2006 (BST)
I mean like building a template from scratch kind of thing. Do I have to "Leech" off another image page?--Canuhearmenow 23:34, 20 August 2006 (BST)
Nope. I've created a lot of templates from scratch. You need to:
  1. Go to Special:Upload and upload whatever images you want to use.
  2. Go to Template:WhateverYouWantYourTemplateToBeNamed and edit that page.
  3. Code in whatever template you want.
  4. Save.
Bob Hammero ModB'cratTA 23:36, 20 August 2006 (BST)
How do I code it?--Canuhearmenow 23:37, 20 August 2006 (BST)
Whatever you put in the page will be substituted in when the template is used. Take a look at a few other templates and see how they're done, then imitate their style. –Bob Hammero ModB'cratTA 23:39, 20 August 2006 (BST)
Hmm...Ok, I think I get it now, Thanks!--Canuhearmenow 23:40, 20 August 2006 (BST)
I keep on looking for a Template page to base my template off of, but can't find one. Also, what do I write down on the empty page?--Canuhearmenow 19:11, 21 August 2006 (BST)
What kind of template are you making? And once again, anything you put in the template page is what will appear when you use the template. Most of the user box templates, for example, use small tables with an image and some text. –Bob Hammero ModB'cratTA 19:15, 21 August 2006 (BST)
Well, just a simple "This user is a member of the Roftwood Assault Force Joyner Battalion" With the logo.--Canuhearmenow 19:17, 21 August 2006 (BST)
Take a look at {{ASSaultSupporterSmall}}, I think it's similar to what you're trying to do. Go to the edit page (but don't actually change anything), and you'll see that it's really a table. You can see how it's all laid out, where the background color and image are set, where the text goes, all that. Just base yours on that, change the colors, image, and words, and you should be done. You can just copy and paste the entire page and change the relevant parts (including the usage part) if you want. –Bob Hammero ModB'cratTA 19:21, 21 August 2006 (BST)
Thanks a bunch!--Canuhearmenow 19:22, 21 August 2006 (BST)
Hey, one last thing, can you check Recent Changes and go to the template I made so you can fix that {{}} thing? Don't know how. And also, how do I change letter and background colors?--Canuhearmenow 19:29, 21 August 2006 (BST)
I don't see any {}s hanging around, so I can't fix those. It's very easy to change the colors. If you look at the template, you will see colors mentioned in several parts. Here's what you need to know:
  1. border:solid black 2px: you can change "black" to any color you want to change the border color.
  2. background-color: #00000: this should be a 6-digit hexadecimal code, or a named color, and will change the color behind the title text. You can get a list of some of the valid colors at Web colors.
  3. color: #FF0000: this is done the same way as the previous one, but it will change the text color itself.
Bob Hammero ModB'cratTA 19:35, 21 August 2006 (BST)
So, how would I make this a template without the whole {{}} thing? How do I do that part?--Canuhearmenow 19:38, 21 August 2006 (BST)
Ah, I think I see what you are asking now. The answer is, you wouldn't. Every "user box" template on the wiki is laid out that way, because the {{}}s are setting up a table. You can read about this at Help:Templates and Help:Tables. –Bob Hammero ModB'cratTA 19:40, 21 August 2006 (BST)
Sorry, I give up, can you please finish the Template I made so I can make more for my group, so potentially I will be able to make templates based off this one?--Canuhearmenow 19:45, 21 August 2006 (BST)
There was one small technical problem with your template, I fixed that, plus changed the part of the background. Larger problem is the hideously long (misspelled) name. You might want to rename the template to something shorter, like RAFJB, for example. The template should update the usage instructions automatically. --Brizth M T 19:59, 21 August 2006 (BST)

Template:Suburb

I'd like to ask for your comments on a suggest I recently lodged on Template talk:Suburb. It appears that this page is traditionaly edited by mods but no policy exists for updating it. Is this type of edit something I could perform on my own or should I wait for more feedback? Ask for forgiveness instead of permission sort of thing? Or is it off limits to me? --Dunnigan Taggart 22:29, 14 August 2006 (BST)

From Dunnigan Taggart's talk page:
I usually answer on my own talk page, but it looks like you left your comment a few days ago, so I'll answer here instead. I updated the template for you, and although most people haven't edited that template, you could have if you wanted to. You did the right thing in asking for feedback, and if you hadn't heard anything bad, you could have just gone ahead and edited it yourself. There is some benefit to you in having me do it, though, because I'll get any flak if people don't like it. ;) –Bob Hammero ModB'cratTA 23:42, 20 August 2006 (BST)

Groupbox Rework (using templates with parameters within)

I noticed your spiffy rework on the groupbox and like it so far. One of the things I like most is the pleading is assigned to rows instead of columns. It's Mo Better! I have general questions if you have time. Is it possible to use a template with variables inside another template call? I wanted to place a call to {{forum|http://foo/}} within the contact section of a groupbox. When I did this the pipe in the forum call seemed to wanker the group table. Any thoughts on how to accomplish this? --Max Grivas JG,T,P! 22:48, 28 June 2006 (BST)

Thank you. I've always found {{Groupbox}} to be a bit on the ugly side, not to mention (after looking at its code) pretty old-school in its design. My version looks very similar, but behind the scenes it's far more up to date.
Anyway, to answer your question: as far as I know, and to my great annoyance, templates called inside other templates, whether or not they use variables, almost always screw up. That's why you'll see that I always sign by hand on Suggestions, instead of using my normal signature as I do everywhere else. I would very much like it if there were a way to call templates from other templates (I've got a lot of ideas for fancy templates myself, but they almost all require more than one layer of substitutions), but I don't think it's possible. I'll point Xoid (aka Grand Master of Wikicode) to this conversation, though, so that he can either verify what I said or provide a solution to our problem. –Bob Hammero ModB'cratTA 03:23, 29 June 2006 (BST)
{{Info_{{{1}}}}} would make the first parameter part of a variable, or something similiar. That isn't very useful though. Not unless you want to force people to make a template for each and every group, which is obviously self defeating. –Xoid STFU! 06:58, 29 June 2006 (BST)
Doing some digging and research on other wiki sites shows that this has been resolved in later versions of the software. I'm still unsure at what version the changes came into effect but MediaWiki 1.6.7 (at least) allows for use of templates within templates, variablenames and parameters. As of 1.6 parameters may also have default values built it like {{{1|default}}}. Those would be benificial for coding some cooler stuff. Perhaps an upgrade down the road will lend us some scope. In the mean time check out temp in temp to see whats possible on the horizion. --Max Grivas JG,T,P! 08:07, 29 June 2006 (BST)
I could've saved you some trouble by saying that this has all been brought up before, but, meh, I forgot. –Xoid STFU! 08:11, 29 June 2006 (BST)
So, any shot at getting the wiki software updated? Should I bring this up to Kevan? –Bob Hammero ModB'cratTA 08:30, 29 June 2006 (BST)

Well, your quote because of the awesomeness and hilarity (you da man!), and the Labine50 quote because it is one of the most retarded things I have seen on the wiki. In true style, Labine50 managed to get absolutely nothing right when voting on a suggestion to boost search rates: powered searches are very useful, the game is unbalanced in survivors favor, and the idea sucked. That level of stupidity just has to be archived, don't you think? –Bob Hammero ModB'cratTA 09:36, 29 June 2006 (BST)
It's true. I am da man. One thing, though: While Labine is certainly a - if not the - exemplar of Stupidity in Our Times, I still prefer Classic Labine, when you could practically feel the hysteria oozing through your monitor. Hmmm, can't think right now of the paragraphs but I can say that it should look like Project Welcome!'s homepage, and maybe for jokes just use a M! for the Mentor page's picture. Also, maybe we should contact Sonny, MrAushvitz, Xoid, Gage, and the other senior wiki members so we can make this thing go off smoothly, like ask them for their opinions on what should the main page paragraphs should be, and so they could quickly sign on for membership. And about the paragraphs; Maybe it should be a 5 paragraph structure, the 1st paragraph describes how Blank (Saying that because I can't think of a good name for the group, we should talk about a name with the others) was made. The 2nd paragraph should describe what the group does, the 3rd page should tell how to join or get help. The 4th paragraph would show a list of available mentors, and upon being chosen the chooser must remove the name from the list, and when done with helping the newb the Mentor would put his name back on the list. The 5th paragraph would just have a list of people who are using a mentor, and next to their name there would be the name of the mentor. So, what do you think? (And when the page is made please send a link to my talk page, and if it happens a link to the discussion the above people had about a name and/or paragraphs.)--Canuhearmenow Hunt! 21:11, 24 August 2006 (BST)

Coalition for Fair Tactics

Why did you deem it necessary to delete my addition to the discussion of the CFT General Guidelines? Was it inflammatory? Are only CFT members allowed to post there? Inquiring minds would like to know. Also, hasn't Kevan gone on record saying he doesn't care how people metagame, making this whole issue moot? --Torvus 00:48, 22 August 2006 (BST)

  1. Please reread my page guidelines. I like new comments to be under level three headers. Thanks.
  2. Only members of the relevant CFT Assembly are allowed to post on that page. You should have left your comments on the talk page. The large box at the top of the page quite clearly states this. Please read it. As a matter of fact, any time you go to a page and see a large box at the top, it's a good idea to read it unless you find yourself breaking a rule that you didn't know about.
  3. Please reread what the purpose of the CFT is. What Kevan thinks is irrelevant.
  4. In summary: read things. Thanks. –Bob Hammero ModB'cratTA 03:48, 22 August 2006 (BST)

Hey, I signed up for the DEMON thing, but I forgot that I'm going on holiday for a week now (till the 11th), so I won't be able to take part in any discussions etc. for the next week. Just a note

Hey as you have noticed I'm taking a break from the UD wiki for a while. I got a bit sick of only cycling pages and getting quite a bit of criticism for trying to think about things differently (Cyberbob calling me slow just topped it off for me), anyway because I don't know when I'll be back on a regular basis I suggest you try and keep on top of the suggestions. Not only cycling but also moving them into their respective categories. As you would have remembered we had a massive backlog before so it'll be a shame to go back to that. I suggest for your ease that you go and get a few people to share the burden of that mind numbing work. Mind you though I doubt anyone would be too willing to help. Well I guess if there is a backlog when I do come back that I can get onto it, but I need to find myself some reason to go onto the wiki other than just moving suggestions. Well good luck with the suggestions system while I'm gone. - Jedaz 14:18, 2 August 2006 (BST)

The Assembly

Unfortunately, my current location (Shore Hills/Galbraight Hills border) has been under attack for several weeks now. I'm currently defending what few buildings we can and simply repairing the barricades of my home base has been a taxing venture, leaving me very little AP to find bullets and other supplies. At current, I would not be the most effective member to have with you, and my people need me more so I have to respectfully decline your offer. Maybe next time. --Arcos 12:12, 1 August 2006 (BST)

From Arcos's talk page:
I noticed your message on Bob's talk page. Just so you know; the purpose for the assembly is to give feedback on the current issue, not use AP in the game. If it comes to action in game, rest assured that there are numbers enough to do the job. –Xoid STFU! 16:36, 1 August 2006 (BST)

If it is merely in a diplomatic/negotiatory position, then I am available; but if not, I can't abandon my people. Also, the actual functions of the assembly seem rather ill-defined, but I have been known to read things wrong in the past. --Arcos TCS 21:12, 1 August 2006 (BST)
It's just a discussion/diplomacy/negotiations kind of position, correct. If action has to be taken in-game, it will be recommended by the assembly, but there's nothing that says that individual representatives have to do things themselves. If you'd really rather that we pick someone else, though, just let me know. –Bob Hammero ModB'cratTA 00:43, 2 August 2006 (BST)

He better no be blaming Bob. Why can't people just take it as a given that he knows what he's talking about? If people keep saying "prove it, prove it", then of course he's going to give a working solution. Frankly, I'd prefer to keep the details quiet, but whenever you vote on suggestions you have to provide reasoning. It wouldn't matter if people who didn't know what they were talking about made suggestions, now would it? Sorry for being rude, but I had to vent. –Xoid STFU! 03:26, 31 July 2006 (BST)
The motherfucker had better not be blaming me. Why? My pseudocode was vague enough — deliberately — so that the only way you could make use of it would be if you were already competent enough not to need a code example in the first place, making it moot.
But as Xoid said, this whole issue would be avoided if, when people hear me say "I know what I'm talking about," or "your idea is broken, here's why," or "that won't work," or "that's already been defeated," or "shut the fuck up, you really don't know what you're saying," they believed me instead of badgering me and snickering and feeding off of each other's ineptitude and thinking that they've "got me," when really any programmer in the world with a working brain cell would be falling over in their chair laughing at the idiots. If people who don't know things would just shut up, none of this would have happened.
I'm not mad at you. I'm mad at morons. –Bob Hammero ModB'cratTA 03:35, 31 July 2006 (BST)
He's not blaming you. He's just saying that you should've e-mailed or PMed someone it instead of saying it out in the open. Kind of like how you e-mailed me today. But he does say that even if you didn't say it then they would have found out eventually. Sonny Corleone WTF RRF ASS 03:36, 31 July 2006 (BST)
The pseudocode was vague enough that only someone who could've done it anyway could've made use of it, so why bother hiding it? –Xoid STFU! 03:39, 31 July 2006 (BST)
As Xoid said, that's a fallacy. The code was so vague that only someone who could have done it on their own would have been able to make real use out of it. Come and go?

Bob, I know you have played this game way longer then me, so tell me, is what survivors experiencing basically the same thing that zeds experienced and that is why they went on strike? I am asking because I don't want to get all frustrated over the possibility of the game ending...So you think this thing will just come and go?--Canuhearmenow 01:30, 26 July 2006 (BST)

Good question. This is very similar in the effect to what prompted the formation of On Strike, but it's a different cause.
When we went on strike, it was due directly to the increase in syringe find rates, and the lack of new zombie skills. What happened is the zombie population dropped to staggeringly low levels, and many prominent players stopped playing.
In this case, it's a somewhat different cause — namely, zombie players have changed their attacking tactics, but survivor players haven't followed suit. Kevan has tried to make up for this somewhat with the nerf on Brain Rot, but it doesn't appear to have helped yet.
All that said, yes, I think that this will come and go. I've seen the balance tip back and forth several times now, and I'm certain that it will swing back to 50/50, and then in favor of survivors, before too long. And then, it'll start to tip back to 50/50, and back to zombies, and…. Just hang in there. –Bob Hammero ModB'cratTA 01:35, 26 July 2006 (BST)
Ok, so because you have played and seen so much, how long, in your opinion, will we have to hang on?--Canuhearmenow 02:05, 26 July 2006 (BST)
It really depends how much people are willing to change their playing strategies. If they're unwilling, it could be several weeks. If they're willing to change, possibly only one or two weeks. It really depends. I've been invited to apply to the Council of Leaders, and I'm taking some other steps as well to help out, so we'll see how much progress can be made. –Bob Hammero ModB'cratTA 02:27, 26 July 2006 (BST)

Concerning the O.C.D

I would like to personally thank you for your editing. Our web moderator has been replaced, by me, and we will make sure we have better information on groups before we allow them to be posted into our Under Investigation section. To adress your statement in your NPOV section, I understand that it might be hard to believe that there is more than one member in my group, and how it may be a little unorthodox to not name our members, but this is the only way we can complete investigations. If we are trying to get into a suspected pking group and we advertise that we are a member of the O.C.D, our organization would not be very effective. However I do agree that I am new to this game and new to wiki, so any mistakes I make concerning wiki edict, by all means, correct me. That being said I don’t want to make trouble with any groups right now, part of which is because we don’t have a base of operations, so just to clear things up, may I edit or change your additions to our site? Thanks again for your helpful suggestions.-Snakeeyes0072 19:35, 25 July 2006 (BST)

You are of course free to edit my changes. However, you're not allowed to edit them so that they're not neutral, or remove them entirely. Not that hard to keep track of, really. But Matthew, it took me a while to figure out what you were saying. "Edit North, 1000 degrees?" Yeah. –Bob Hammero ModB'cratTA 05:47, 20 July 2006 (BST)
Oh, in Argentina "N°" stands for "number". I tought it was like that everywhere... --Matthew Fahrenheit YRC | T | W! 05:54, 20 July 2006 (BST)
Well, in the US we sometimes use "No" for "number" (note the smaller "o," not the degree symbol "°"). Is that what you meant? –Bob Hammero ModB'cratTA 06:06, 20 July 2006 (BST)
Hah! I'm sorry but I didn't want (neither tought) to go trough all that code just for an edit. Actually my keyboard has the key that makes that symbol, but it's configured like a English Keyboard instead of what it is so the key doesn't print the symbol it has. --Matthew Fahrenheit YRC | T | W! 06:17, 20 July 2006 (BST)

Damn. I've slowed down. –Xoid STFU! 06:56, 20 July 2006 (BST)
Actually they're 7394! You lazy guys, can't check anything... --Matthew Fahrenheit YRC | T | W! 06:57, 20 July 2006 (BST)
What? No, it was 7500 edits. –Bob Hammero ModB'cratTA 06:59, 20 July 2006 (BST)
I don't know how you came with that number, but I can tell you how did I: Special:Contributions, and some trial and error in the navigation bar. Also, I changed the number because he edited more while I was cheking. --Matthew Fahrenheit YRC | T | W! 07:02, 20 July 2006 (BST)
I'm pretty sure that the wiki will return misleading information if you try to get it to query the database too heavily. I did it in a very simple way: Special:Contributions, set the query size to 500 edits at a time, went to the earliest edit, then counted groups of 500 until I couldn't advance any further. At that point, you just have to count the number of edits on the page (simple in most text editors), and add it all up. –Bob Hammero ModB'cratTA 07:05, 20 July 2006 (BST)
I did something much alike what you did. If you check it, when you change it to show in groups of 500, the nav bar looks like this:
http://wiki.urbandead.com/index.php?title=Special:Contributions&target=Xoid&offset=0&limit=500
That "500" can be changed to whatever you want, but it won't show more than 5000 edits. So, I aimed to find what was the half of Xoid edits, and i came up with 3680, with a plus of some 32 edits (i counted them manually). Then, I added the ones that he made while I was checking (2), and got that number. --Matthew Fahrenheit YRC | T | W! 07:12, 20 July 2006 (BST)

Wiki Gestapo

I have nothing wrong with the Wiki Gestapo. I found it funny but I'm thinking ahead. We're going to get an Amazing type troll who'll complain and cause a big scene. So if we keep I'm fine with it. But I don't like the part about being mentioned on the page. It makes me look like the bad guy for putting it up for deletion. Sonny Corleone WTF 16:03, 11 July 2006 (BST)

I agree. You could always add an NPOV section to address that, which is what I was talking about. Alternately, there's always the (ab)use of power option. This is like a meeting of the leaders right here: Gage has characters in ASS and RRF. Guess who leads ASS. Guess who leads RRF. ;) (Don't know if I ever congratulated you on that, by the way. Congratulations! I've got a rotter in the RRF myself.) –Bob Hammero ModB'cratTA 16:06, 11 July 2006 (BST)
I'm going to leave it be. Frankly I don't want to be brought up on vadalizing again for putting a NPOV section in. And thanks for the congratulations. Sonny Corleone WTF 16:08, 11 July 2006 (BST)
That's your choice, but just so you know, NPOV is specifically protected. If you add an NPOV and he tries to get you for it, I'll back you up. –Bob Hammero ModB'cratTA 16:12, 11 July 2006 (BST)
I'd debate that. Due to Odd Starter's delightfully lax wording of that section, essentially anything you could add can be vetoed by the group owning the page. I'm seriously considering trying to strongarm some support together for a move to the Nexus Wiki's way of dealing with this sort of shit: require people to put a specific disclaimer that anything and everything is non-objective, or take it to arbitration if there is a fucking complaint, instead of all this bitching and moaning that we get now, like with the Bloody Moronic Eeeeediot's group page. –Xoid STFU! 18:57, 11 July 2006 (BST)

I can recognise how you are "encrypting" the data, but I really can't be bothered — if it was something that needed to be truly secret you would have used much more secure methods, perhaps even beale, but I doubt anyone would have the patientence to decode it if it was. Beale's practically invulnerable to brute force cracking, after all. –Xoid STFU! 05:14, 5 July 2006 (BST)
A short Perl script, or something similar, should help you if you if you really want to break the "encryption" (can you really call it that? I guess so, but effectively not). Anyway, if I really wanted to post something secure, I would probably use something like AES. But I'm more interested in creating an interesting puzzle than I am in keeping the information secure. –Bob Hammero ModB'cratTA 05:18, 5 July 2006 (BST)
Personally, I would use beale. Essentially uncrackable. –Xoid STFU! 05:25, 5 July 2006 (BST)
Reading about the Beale ciphers, it looks like the technique is a book cipher. That kind of technique isn't really secure anymore, you know. –Bob Hammero ModB'cratTA 06:44, 5 July 2006 (BST)

Timeline template help needed!

Hey can you have a look at Template:Timeline, it just a set of major events in UD. I use them in the page History.

Can you check and add/edit any more events to it? One of the event that needs, to be fixed is the date that "Amazing" got banned from Wiki.

By the way story has been moved to History and unfortunatly it still going to be shot down (its on the Moderation/Deletions page), fortunatly i only need one more keep to be safe(The only problem would be the fact that i only have a couple more days left for it, oh well...). However Template:Timeline would still have its merit so it should be safe to edit it :)

Cheero! --Akimbomidget 13:50, 1 July 2006 (BST)

I'll take a look at it, but I have to tell you, my gut feeling is that it'll end up being voted on for deletion as well. I'm not sure why it needs to be in the Template namespace, and having a user ban as a major item in UD's history is asking for a flamewar, in my opinion. –Bob Hammero ModB'cratTA 17:11, 1 July 2006 (BST)

I saw that before, and wondered what it was about. –Bob Hammero ModB'cratTA 07:24, 3 June 2006 (BST)
Heard of ANZAC day? I'm sure Aussie war veterans are turning in their grave as I speak. –Xoid STFU! 07:26, 3 June 2006 (BST)
No I haven't. What is it? –Bob Hammero ModB'cratTA 07:27, 3 June 2006 (BST)
Australia-New Zealand -something- Corps Day. (It is really bad that I don't know that whole acronym. Worse than an incestual relationship that includes your dog in the equation.) It's a veterans day, where we celebrate all that our troops did over the years; fighting to keep us free and all that.
"We shall remember them", and "Lest we forget" are two of the taglines for ANZAC day. Making light of it like that is probably enough to get me lynched. (Not enough to make it a certainty, but it's still very poor form.) –Xoid STFU! 07:35, 3 June 2006 (BST)
Oh well, what do I know. I'm an American. There's the US, and then all you semi-humans. (Yes, that was a joke. Which reminds me: {{Humor}}, if you haven't seen it already.) –Bob Hammero ModB'cratTA 07:38, 3 June 2006 (BST)
Bob, that was really inappropriate! I don't understand how you can possibly grant partial humanity to foreigners while our boys (well, not yours and mine - we don't like each other that way) are fighting overseas. From now on, try to remember that it's subhumans. --Jimbo Bob ASSU! 07:44, 3 June 2006 (BST)
LMAO You guys are a riot. –Xoid STFU! 07:46, 3 June 2006 (BST)
Heh. Thanks! Also, were you referring to Khalil's entry on the trophy list with the sainthood thing? If so, I didn't really get the humour there. Mind 'splaining? --Jimbo Bob ASSU! 07:51, 3 June 2006 (BST)
I have a very morbid and black sense of humour. I can laugh at http://www.sexylosers.com/ (Not safe for work.) and that site makes light of Necrophiliacs for fucksake. –Xoid STFU! 07:55, 3 June 2006 (BST)
It wasn't so much the profanity that made me wonder - as noted elsewhere on this page, I read S*P, fer cryin' out loud. It was that there was no discernable (to me) joke in what he said. Far as I could tell, the guy was just cussin'. --Jimbo Bob ASSU! 08:03, 3 June 2006 (BST)
"Skull-fucked name after filling him with lead.", meaning he molested the guy's corpse afterwards. (You do know what skullfucking is, right?) –Xoid STFU! 08:35, 3 June 2006 (BST)
In the general sense. I can't say I've ever had somebody present me with a diagram... nor do I much care to.
Alright, I guess I can see where (possibly) inadvertently admitting to necrophilia is worth a giggle. --Jimbo Bob ASSU! 08:44, 3 June 2006 (BST)
I noticed it. But, as you said, you can't spell correctly. (Bloody Americans. There is only one form of correct English. That reminds me, check out meta.wikipedia.org and search for gorilla campaign and guerilla campaign. If you can't find what I'm trying to steer you in the direction of, just holler.) Can I ask a favour? Could you just copy 'n' paste the code from {{flagbox}} when making 60px wide pic templates, same thing but with {{smallbox}} for 40px wide templates. Consistency is my major gripe with all the templates on this dump site. –Xoid STFU! 07:46, 3 June 2006 (BST)
Sure. What's the difference in the code? –Bob Hammero ModB'cratTA 08:47, 3 June 2006 (BST)
Mostly minor, just cleaner, tighter, and IIRC, the way that I fiddled with setting the width makes it more adaptable when the image size is fucked around with. –Xoid STFU! 09:18, 3 June 2006 (BST)
Ha. Hilarious stuff. (But it's meta.wikipedia.org). –Bob Hammero ModB'cratTA 08:55, 3 June 2006 (BST)
Hmm? What was that. *whistles* –Xoid STFU! 09:18, 3 June 2006 (BST)
I understand they undertook some manner of kickassery in Vietnam? Also, don't worry - abortion jokes are hilarious! --Jimbo Bob ASSU! 07:48, 3 June 2006 (BST)
I love S*P. When I discovered it a year ago, I wasted a month straight reading through everything in the archives, right from the start. (I did that with QoW and every other web comic I've picked up over the years.) How'd you find out about S*P, anyway? –Xoid STFU! 07:55, 3 June 2006 (BST)
You sent me to QoW, and their crossovers sent me to S*P. Little surprised it took you so long to work your way through the archives, though. I do the same archive-binging thing when I find a new webcomic, and it rarely takes me more than a few days to make it through. You a slow reader, or did you just have a life unnecessary distractions taking time away from that? --Jimbo Bob ASSU! 08:03, 3 June 2006 (BST)
I was working my way through about seven or eight other webcomic's archives at the same time. Understandably, this made the process take longer. –Xoid STFU! 08:35, 3 June 2006 (BST)
Ah. I imagine that'd do it, yeah.--Jimbo Bob ASSU! 08:44, 3 June 2006 (BST)
My god. I go away for 45 minutes, and this spirals out of control. Damn you, people with no lives. –Bob Hammero ModB'cratTA 08:49, 3 June 2006 (BST)
Hey, I have a life. I'm just celebrating a reprieve from it, is all. --Jimbo Bob ASSU! 08:54, 3 June 2006 (BST)

Hey Bob, why'd you kill the {{Humor}}? It was a template that I stole borrowed for using in those situations — a template that points to a template. Great idea, right? –Xoid STFU! 08:03, 3 June 2006 (BST)

What do you mean, killed it? –Bob Hammero ModB'cratTA 08:49, 3 June 2006 (BST)
Oh, now I get it. I just thought I really typoed before. –Bob Hammero ModB'cratTA 08:51, 3 June 2006 (BST)

Also, I'd just like to have it recorded that I am immature enough to find the heading (hee hee) of this section hilarious. Thank you. --Jimbo Bob ASSU! 08:46, 3 June 2006 (BST)

LOLOL IMACHURITY. –Bob Hammero ModB'cratTA 08:49, 3 June 2006 (BST)
Just so, Bob. Just so. --Jimbo Bob ASSU! 08:54, 3 June 2006 (BST)
w00t! Yay for erectile dysfunction! –Xoid STFU! 09:18, 3 June 2006 (BST)
STDs are also hilarious. Except for when they're gross. Then they're just gross. --Jimbo Bob ASSU! 09:34, 3 June 2006 (BST)

promotion

Sorry you had to withdraw. I wish I'd seen it earlier, I'd have vouched. Better luck next time.--'STER-Talk-Mod 19:23, 1 June 2006 (BST)

I appreciate your support. Unfortunately, I felt like the tables weren't tipping in my favor, and I figure if I wait a month or so I'll probably have better support. I'll be sure to leave you a note, if you want, when I re-run. Thanks again! --Bob Hammero TW!U! 19:27, 1 June 2006 (BST)

Noob

Yeah thanks for helping. What I've been trying to do is set up a grouppage (I know you've noticed) after I made another post in response to what I just wrote him. I was typing the 2nd response when you gave me the answer, I know I'm still a noob, but right now I have done what I was hoping to accomplish on this site (Rather poorly though). But I know I have another question rotting in my brain somewhere, but I don't remember what it was. If I can think of it I'll drop you a line. Thanks again --Captain Pirate 05:31, 1 June 2006 (BST)

I'm kind of proud of this. Took me ages to find a good pic :) --A Bothan Spy Mod WTF U! 15:00, 30 May 2006 (BST)

Moderation

BobHammero for moderation!

Go for it! --hagnat mod 04:46, 30 May 2006 (BST)
Are you sure? I haven't been here two months yet (well, not under this account anyway, I was part of the "Tehasskickars" account before). :-D --Bob Hammero TW!U! 04:50, 30 May 2006 (BST)
Wait a little bit. (1-2 weeks at a minimum.) Frankly, I should've waited, but I felt it was more important to get feed back on how I needed to change my attitude than to be successful first time around. –Xoid STFU! 04:55, 30 May 2006 (BST)
OK. I still wasn't planning on running within that time period anyway, but I thought I'd throw this your way. --Bob Hammero TW!U! 04:59, 30 May 2006 (BST)
You know what, on second thought, I think I'll give it a shot. Even if I fail miserably, it would give me good feedback on what I should be doing differently. --Bob Hammero TW!U! 08:22, 30 May 2006 (BST)

Time is the great equalizer. Just continue as you do and everything will turn out fine--Vista 11:27, 30 May 2006 (BST)

Thanks for your support. Don't worry, I have no plans to start fighting again! --Bob Hammero TW!U! 11:30, 30 May 2006 (BST)

Member of two opposing groups?

How can you be a member of project Welcome and project UnWelcome at once?--The General W! Mod 23:36, 28 May 2006 (BST)

Well, as I say on my user page, it's basically a joke. I don't actually support Project UnWelcome (actually, I don't think anyone really does), but I think it's funny. --Bob Hammero TW!U! 23:43, 28 May 2006 (BST)
Nah, Bob is just in on the conspiracy to overthrow the wiki. Oops. Um, bye. –Xoid STFU! 07:04, 29 May 2006 (BST)
Agent Four, you have been compromised. Initiate plan Blue Four. I repeat. Initiate Blue Four. Your existence has been disavowed. This message will self-destruct in four seconds. --Bob Hammero TW!U! 07:12, 29 May 2006 (BST)

Toolbox

Looks very nice. It could be linked from at least help pages, maybe some other place also. It seems Xoid went through it, so I don't think I'll find anything to fix :D --Brizth mod T W! 13:29, 28 May 2006 (BST)

I fixed things that stood out as wrong, but I wasn't looking very hard. There are probably still minor problems with it; everything seems to have minor problems that get missed. –Xoid STFU! 16:43, 28 May 2006 (BST)
Thank you! I'm sure there are little problems too, but if either of you feels like moving it, linking it, or doing whatever the best thing is to let the rest of the community find it easily, feel free. (I can do this myself, too, but I'm not sure if that's something that non-mods are "supposed" to do.) --Bob Hammero TW!U! 17:47, 28 May 2006 (BST)

Knife Sharpening

I can suggest it if you don't want to, but this is a good idea for knives. It'd leave the axe as your standard fall-back weapon and knives could be melee weapons you'd constantly be improving and breaking and replacing. While it would make the axes more interesting I think knives need the improvement more. --Jon Pyre 21:15, 25 May 2006 (BST)

I just made this. What do you think? I intend it to be used in a way similar to Template:Ohsnap. --A Bothan SpyCDF - WTF - U! 08:20, 25 May 2006 (BST)
