Are you still maintaining your bookmarklets? The DEM lookup and form filler had some problems parsing the coordinates for me (The Y was fractional sometimes) and the Check My PKer is going to the old Rouge's Gallery that no longer exists. I've made updates to all three bookmarklets. Maybe you could put them up on your website? Also, the Rogues Gallery Lookup is probably useless for now since I don't see a search by location anywhere on the new http://rg.urbandead.net. --Thvortex 20:59, 8 October 2010 (BST) | Are you still maintaining your bookmarklets? Oops. I found another problem with how the bookmarklets handle the edges of the map. I added the fix to the Javascript code below. --Thvortex 19:13, 31 October 2010 (UTC)

The udSIMsniff Greasemonkey script has the same problem with parsing coordinates as the two bookmarklets in my previous post. For example, I just tried Scent Death at [55,34] but the script computed [55,30.222222222222]. I can fix the script if you'd like. Or should I get in touch with Bisfan? --Thvortex 15:19, 16 October 2010 (BST)
:If you have an improved GM script, I can put that up. The location finding algorythm I came up with has always had occasional glitches. 22:42, 16 October 2010 (BST)

I figured out another small improvement to the SIM site, but you'll have to make the changes yourself in the <tt>viewSIM.php</tt> script. Firefox 3 does smooth image scaling which messes up the map images. There is a very simple way to disable this in Firefox by using the non-standard <tt>image-rendering</tt> CSS property. You can just add it to the <tt>img.topleft</tt> class style. --Thvortex 16:23, 19 October 2010 (BST)
:::Cool! I've been looking for some time for a way to do exactly that. To bad it only works for Firefox, but given that submissions are made via greasemonkey, its a safe bat viewers probably use Firefox. Sadly, I'm short on freetime, but would like to clean up that (and a few other) glitches soon. 02:02, 20 October 2010 (BST)
::::There is a <tt>-ms-interpolation-mode</tt> property that works the same way with IE8 (even though that MSDN page talks about IE9). However, IE8 doesn't correctly line up the map images with the suburb table so it's a moot point really. --Thvortex 06:20, 20 October 2010 (BST)

:Maybe, maybe, and no. The point of TBP would be the put a wrench in The Dead's plans, but I hope I don't need to be in charge for that to happen. I'd rather focus my efforts on getting SIM working again, as it was a very good way to get an eye on what revive points (designated or not) in ise unrecoverable areas would most benefit from TBP tactics. :Cool, didn't know reports were going into EMRP on a daily basis. Karek owns the site (assuming he pays the bills come Jun 16) and has done some maintenance, but I should probably go back over it- its needed a heavy overhaul for some time. SIM has the same problem- basically, the location-finding code I used doesn't work with the new layout. Its hard to find the energy for, though, what with the new baby, graduating school, & looking for a job... 04:05, 9 June 2011 (BST)
::Pretty much that. With two working alternatives I haven't really seen a need to find the time to play with it. Swiers does still have full access. I actually have only even logged into UD twice since the update in question so I'm not even sure at this point in time what the issue is. I'll look into it this weekend though, see if we can at least get a quick fix so that it can at least record new screenshots. As for SIM, swiers knows a lot more about that than me, I've never really even browsed the code for it.--<small>Karek<font face="Monotype Corsiva">maps 2.0?!</font></small> 08:49, 9 June 2011 (BST)

Some time back, by CRES Doctor noticed the The Big Prick was beginning to stagnate, leading him to put out a call for individuals interested in helping TBP move forward. I have volunteered my services to help this happen. In my humble opinion, the idea behind the formation of TBP was among the more unique in Malton's history. In its time, it broke up the monotony that was quickly setting in and gave adventurous individuals a chance to try something new. It also helped de-stigmatize people regarding combat revives and make Malton a place where those of dual nature could have a chance to explore their separate agendas. As many of these issues are not as large as they once were, it may seem we have reached a time when Malton no longer needs The Big Prick. I say, it's not all about being needed. Do you still enjoy reviving zombies? Is your first response at a break-in to check for brain rot? Mine is. Being a prick is not a job, it is part of who we are, and though it may not need us in the same way that it once did, with the rise of Apathy and the decline of survivor groups in Malton, the city cannot afford to lose the Big Prick. Accordingly, I have begun reworking some of the format of TBP pages including a retool of the main page and the introduction of and achievement system that will let pricks gain recognition on their own time on their own terms. As a person who still chooses to fly the colors of TBP, I would appreciate your feedback on my talk page or on the TBP forum. Thank you for your time and may your syringes never be blunted.

am i properly set up for the sim map ?
i "registered" with you, but it doesn't seem my reports are getting fed to the map. is it alt specific? if so, contact me and i'll give you info for the alts i'm using the map with. thanks. --WanYao 08:36, 7 July 2008 (BST)
- You are set up. It tracks users only by their "registration phrase", so it is not alt specific. If you have the udSIMsniff script installed, just click the "submit data" button after you've used scent death, and it will ask for that phrase. It only asks the first time you do this on any machine- after that, its stored on the machine, in the about:config file. If your submission is going through at all and it recognizes you as a user, there should be a lag in the page opening after you click that button, and you will get a message saying your submission is accepted (or, in rare cases, rejected).
If you are not getting that message and the page is opening rather quickly after your submission, then sim.urbandead.com does probably not recognize you as a user. I have you registered; your phrase MD5 (which is all I actually store) works out to be 15b29ffdce66e10527a65bc6d71ad94d. You can find out what passphrase you are actually using by typing about:config as your browsers url, and searching for greasemonkey.scriptvals.http://iwitnesniffSend.urbandead.info /udSimSniff.SIMregistration. You may want to visit http://www.adamek.biz/md5-generator.php and see if we have the same phrase. If not, I'll need to update my file to reflect the pass phrase you are actually using (unless you can figure out the one that actually gives that MD5 result- then you can just update about:config.) Swiers 17:28, 7 July 2008 (BST)- Well, as far as I can tell, we're on the same page with my passphrase. However, when I try to send a report, I get no message saying it was successfully submitted and, yes, the map opens quite quickly. So, I'm not sure what's up... --WanYao 02:17, 10 July 2008 (BST)
New registration
Just checking to see if I'm registered. --JikWaffleson 16:06, 8 July 2008 (BST)
- Not if you haven't previously contacted me privately to provide a registration phrase. Entering your registration phrase on your computer simply stores it there; I also need to enter it on the sites server. I do this manually because anonymous registration (such as allowed on most forums, etc) isn't really any better than no registration at all, in terms of preventing abuse. Saving time.
I've finally got an answer to your how does this save time question on Talk/suburb. Once the cat, tells you what groups are being checked for activivty, you simply click from the talk page to the main page of the group and click what links here. That would list all suburbs the group was listed on. --RosslessnessWant a Location Image? 21:00, 9 July 2008 (BST)

Alt-logos
Marven and Giddings already had alt logos, Marven, Giddings.--Karekmaps?! 09:05, 18 July 2008 (BST)
- So I found; I used the one for Giddings, iirc. I don't like they way the imnage's work on the pages though; the mall logos all have white backgrounds so that, when used on a white page, they seem "borderless". The alts all have very clear borders, and look like... well, jpg images slapped into code, rather than bloodstains that got dripped on the page. The ones I did avoid that problem, but aren't nearly as nice in other ways. Swiers 19:52, 18 July 2008 (BST)

SIM
Karen Arlette, an MCI agent, brought a suggestion to the group not long ago about contributing to your scent map while dead. Interested in an extra nose or two? I'd be glad to register, and can recommend it to other members of my group. --FT MCI 03:13, 28 July 2008 (BST)
- Sure. I just need a contact link and passcode (anything that only you and I would know) for each user (person, not character). Using the "e-mail this user" link at left to send me a pass-code of your choosing works for that. If you like, you could have one contact link (say, a group wiki page) & passcode for your entire group, so that people don't need to do this individually. The only drawback there is if somebody uses that passcode to vanadalize the map (submit bad data) I'd have to cut off the whole group. Swiers 03:53, 28 July 2008 (BST)

- I'll need a private registration code for you as a user. It can be any word or phrase you like, but don't post it here- use the "e-mail this user" link to the left, in the toolbox section. Or, you can just use the registration code "anonymous". Swiers 19:20, 5 August 2008 (BST)
User SIM map
nice work on the contributors sim map, very groovy. Although i'm noticing a bit of a glitch there atm. I've waited a few hours since posting a new shot and while the area where i uploaded is solid (as in in the last 24 hrs) it's showing up as part my colour and part yours. Check my main section down SW to see what i mean. Not really an issue at all but it's bugging me....--xoxo 14:06, 7 August 2008 (BST)
- It probably was because your browser cached the image, rather than loading a fresh version for each view. I fixed that issue with the same cache-blocking trick I used on the main map page. I also changed thins so that the user color map is re-drawn when you view the stats page, rather than as a chronjob. It adds a fair bit of lag to viewing the page (though only when re-drawing is needed) but ensure views of the user color map on the stats page are are always up to date with the database. You've seen a 77ap ruin? Any chance i could get the iwit/screenshot of it if you have?--xoxo 09:07, 12 August 2008 (BST)
- I didn't see it personally. Nubis posted a screenshot here. Apparently the building is in Dunnell Hills. Swiers 19:10, 12 August 2008 (BST)
- Only suburb where it'll ever happen probably. Well that and Eastonwood. Neither one has seen people trying to clean it up since the update. There might be some other places in the NW. The DHPD kinda gave up on Dunnell Hills and as far as I know that's the only suburb in the game where zombies are actively trying to hold territory(the whole Something Awful thing). 2 and a half months of zombies holding it is insane though, it's not like it's hard to empty the buildings, I mean COMBAT REVIVE did do it.--Karekmaps?! 22:44, 12 August 2008 (BST)
- Its hard if there's a rotter or two in there, and if you have to cross 15+ blocks of ruins to get there, very few folks are even gonna consider it. Survivors are very short sighted; they'll let a whole area go to hell before they respond just because there's an invisible line (suburb border) / free run gap between them and the ruins. Also, to their defense, with zombies inside, you can't tell how many AP it will take to repair, because you don't have that option. The condition descriptions are a relatively new thing. - 2 rot zombies in a dark building requires a handy slab of coordination to repair. Plus everyone hates DH so why would anyone bother? Considering the amount of zombies there i find it weird (tho easily explainable) that it's the suburb that suffers from a lack of SIM data the most.--xoxo 09:35, 13 August 2008 (BST)
Swiers 04:33, 13 August 2008 (BST)
Im glad someone else has realised the impossible to cross suburb border mentality out there. Say what you like about trenchies, At least they cross the border between Pennville and Whittenside.--RosslessnessWant a Location Image? 10:04, 13 August 2008 (BST)
Understand that for strategic reasons I don't post more specifics, but there are well over a dozen buildings at 60 - 70 AP to repair. We are very actively holding the Hills. (and many of us are rotters) That was one of the things we pushed when we formed the Dead. Karek, we have been holding the Hills since November, but it only started mattering after the update. J3D, we will never contribute SIM data because we are jerks like that. :P --– Nubis NWO 06:54, 14 August 2008 (BST)

Hey, about Wan
Because I've been barred from Wans page (for a comment that wasn't even intended as a flame, although it was late when I wrote it and kindof harsh in hindsight), I thought I would let you know what I thought of Wan. I don't think he is a random asshole in the crowd either. If he was a random asshole I wouldn't have a problem, and I too wouldn't have posted. I usually have somewhat a sense of sympathy for Wan, I know he means well, but sometimes his people skills let him down a little, and it pisses off a helluva lot of users, I'm sure. I am sure Wan intends the best with his NPOV edits, but it's not the edits I have a problem with, it's his nature, and then his defense of his nature, saying that there is no point in him being nice etc. Just thought I would drop you a line to let you know that I wasn't intending on flaming, or intending to seem aggressive, I'm sure it was about 1am at the time and well, you probably know how people get when they are tired.
So yeah, just thought I would clear myself up, and hopefully Wan will read this or something. Thanks--CyberRead240 07:24, 27 August 2008 (BST)

Also - I'd like to invite you, Swiers, or some member you designate, to be part of the Player Killer Olympic Committee (PKOC or Peacock) - you'd be a vote to resolve any issues that come up. Wiki question, relating vaguely to a bright idea of yours.
I wanted to make a page here with a redirect, but started by just plopping down a little bit of text to make the page (which I know is an unnecessary step, but didn't think it was a harmful one). I then snagged the name of the page I wanted to redirect to, came back, and put the redirect in- replacing all other text on the page. Now... I thought that this would be sufficient to create a redirect, but it hasn't. It's still displaying the original text- even though, if you click the edit button, you can see that that's clearly been removed. It's like a ghost, man! Do you have any idea what I did wrong?--ØxØ 08:32, 21 September 2008 (BST)
- Err, okay... it's made my link into a Red Rum link. And apparently, nowiki tags, pre tags, and leading spaces all fail to eliminate html formatting.... so I think you're going to have to look at the comment's source to see what I mean. That, at least, looks fine.--ØxØ 08:41, 21 September 2008 (BST)
- No idea what's happening. Try replacing the FIRST character in the name to create your pseudo-page. That's what I did, and I did not have these problems. Swiers 20:37, 22 September 2008 (BST)

Also ... did you get anywhere with that greasemonkey script for iWitness? I miss the addon which won't load in FF3. --Zeug 05:42, 21 October 2008 (BST)

- Yeh my prob was using them in the frameset Taccon but no matter, will get back to the GM script.--Zeug 10:24, 22 October 2008 (BST)
- If you konw enough JS to do a GM script for iWitness submissions, you should be able to easily modify the BMs to work in your frameset; just alter them to pull body.innerHTML from the relevant frame instead of from the main window. Actually, I'm not 100% sure that will work; there may still be referer problems (iWitness checks the referer, and won't accept submissions from, say, a proxy site) but those problems would also apply equally with a GM script. Sim Image
Great news! You know how FF3 applies somke basic anti-alaising when upscaling an image, which rather destroys the SIM somewhat? Guess which other browser is doing it now? IE8! Woo! With 90% of the browser market now pulling off this trick, might it be worth taking the hit on filesize so people can see it right? -- RoosterDragon 23:40, 20 March 2009 (UTC)
- ff2 ftw.--xoxo 02:58, 21 March 2009 (UTC)
- Yeah, I've been planning to create / store the image at a much larger res for a while. Its a PNG, so there actually is very little difference in file size for a larger image composed of the same blocks of color. Its mostly just the annoyance of patching the code that's kept me from doing it.
From using IE, I've also noticed that some of my CSS / inline style doesn't render as I expected. Swiers 03:18, 21 March 2009 (UTC)

SIM ethics - your thoughts?
I think it's pretty sad that SIM isn't very useful simply because of a lack of participation. I submit anonymously any time I think to after using Scent Death, regardless of which alt I'm playing at the time. I think only one or a handful of users could keep the map relatively up-to-date with a few alts doing nothing but moving and sniffing around, but this seems like it could be interpreted as multi-abuse, perhaps rightly so. I'd like to know what you think of the matter before I seriously consider whether I'm up to investing the time and IP hits. --Nuisance 01:15, 4 September 2010 (BST)
- Practically speaking, it takes about 10 mobile zombie sniffer alts to cover the whole map. When [SIM] was kept up to date (with maybe 80-90% of the map colored instead of grey) I was covering the bulk of it as a one man effort with my alts (5 paid plus 3 unpaid let me do that). Its a total pain in the ass. If you had two folks with 50 unpaid alts each, they could each cover half the city without having to move (much quicker to play out) but getting 50 alts with scent death would be even more of a pain in the ass...
Ethically... eh. I don't think it negatively impacts the game for anybody, or counts as alt abuse in the sense that most folks worry about. Its arguable who it helps or hurts, and how many people would be affected. There's been much more pervasive "surveillance tools" used before, and they didn't break the game. Swiers 04:35, 17 September 2010 (BST)

- If you have an improved GM script, I can put that up. The location finding algorythm I came up with has always had occasional glitches. Swiers 22:42, 16 October 2010 (BST)
I figured out another small improvement to the SIM site, but you'll have to make the changes yourself in the viewSIM.php script. Firefox 3 does smooth image scaling which messes up the map images. There is a very simple way to disable this in Firefox by using the non-standard image-rendering CSS property. You can just add it to the img.topleft class style. --Thvortex 16:23, 19 October 2010 (BST)
- Cool! I've been looking for some time for a way to do exactly that. To bad it only works for Firefox, but given that submissions are made via greasemonkey, its a safe bat viewers probably use Firefox. Sadly, I'm short on freetime, but would like to clean up that (and a few other) glitches soon. Swiers 02:02, 20 October 2010 (BST)
- There is a -ms-interpolation-mode property that works the same way with IE8 (even though that MSDN page talks about IE9). However, IE8 doesn't correctly line up the map images with the suburb table so it's a moot point really. --Thvortex 06:20, 20 October 2010 (BST)

I'd rather focus my efforts on getting SIM working again, as it was a very good way to get an eye on what revive points (designated or not) in ise unrecoverable areas would most benefit from TBP tactics. If the Dead don't stick around, I probably won't so much either. Swiers 06:25, 5 April 2011 (BST)

Son of "You're back!!"
Funny how many of us have wandered back with the Dead resurgence. Anyway, it was good to see you in the grid, even if it was your GCer. Hope you'll understand why I didn't stick around to say hello.--Atticus Rex mfu pif Δ 07:54, 8 June 2011 (BST)
EMRP and Iwitness
Thanks for updating the EMRP: Reports to Process page. However, I already update it daily. More than one updater will cause duplications. So, please leave the job to me.
Also, Iwitness seems to be not working for a while, after August 2010's Safehouse update.

wSub Error LC1: Iwitness does not yet support screenshots of that type.

Are you still the one maintaining it? Or should I ask Karek instead? -- Kittithaj 03:15, 9 June 2011 (BST)
- Cool, didn't know reports were going into EMRP on a daily basis. Swiers 04:05, 9 June 2011 (BST)
- Pretty much that. As for SIM, swiers knows a lot more about that than me, I've never really even browsed the code for it.--Karekmaps 2.0?! 08:49, 9 June 2011 (BST)
- Doh. Iwitness went down. I loved the archives. They helped out a lot when looking for histories of various zergers. --Akule Maker of fine, hand-crafted UDWiki sass since 2006 -- Akule School's back in session™ 02:22, 26 July 2011 (BST)
- The IP is still up but they pulled some jankiness with the domain. I might direct it to a subpage of zgarah at some point but I'm not sure it's retrievable(the domain).--Karekmaps 2.0?! 02:42, 26 July 2011 (BST)

My older character has brain rot :( --Karloth Vois ¯\(°_o)/¯ 17:42, 25 June 2011 (BST)
Greetings
-- Albert Schwan Friday, 31 August 2012 |
Hoi thar
It's nice to die for once at the claws of someone you recognize. (And I didn't really expect to survive the night after repairing that building into negative AP :P ) Good to see that a few old players are still around. -- Spiderzed▋ 09:24, 6 June 2015 (UTC)
