- Right, now I see all the reasons I'm confused. Damn people editting each other's timestamps. Thanks!--Yonnua Koponen Talk ! Contribs 07:29, 5 July 2010 (BST)
Good point, Yonnua. DDR, please stop interfering in the democratic process. There is no rule against fixing somebody's signature when they have clearly attempted to do so. See {{unsigned}}. (Timestamps come from the History tab, noobs.) ᚱᛁᚹᛖᚾᚨᚾᛏ 07:32, 5 July 2010 (BST)
- Revenant, those are not correctly signed, and, since it's a vote where it explicitly said they would be struck otherwise, there'll be no meddling with them.--Yonnua Koponen Talk ! Contribs 07:35, 5 July 2010 (BST)
- No, you're impersonating, which done knowingly is vandalism. You keep it up? You'll be sent to vandal banning. If you want the votes so badly you have to get the users to come back onto the wiki and add the signature and timestamp themselves. You may not make the users timestamp for them, in all votes for the wiki votes/timestamps/sigs must be 100% the voters material, always has been and at the top it's no exception and states the criterea that a valid vote must be when placed which was breached no matter how much surgery you try and pull on the votes to fix them. And I know they come from the history tab. --
- Gotta agree with DDR and Yonn on this one. It's standard practice and it says it in plain language that explicitly lays out what'll happen if you fail to do it properly. That said, there's more to that rule than merely striking the vote, and on the one user I did check, neither of you two followed through on it. —Aichon— 07:52, 5 July 2010 (BST)
- As far as I remember it said we should notify the users. I don't bother notifying meatpuppets. If it were you who screwed it up, I would notify you, not users who will only get the message when they're called back in a month. -- 07:53, 5 July 2010 (BST)
- I actually notified them both when I struck them the first time.--Yonnua Koponen Talk ! Contribs 07:57, 5 July 2010 (BST)
- The {{unsigned}} template does not constitute impersonation. Neither does fixing someone else's timestamp. The History confirms that the comment was theirs, I am providing correct attribution. lrn2copyrite kthx ᚱᛁᚹᛖᚾᚨᚾᛏ 08:31, 5 July 2010 (BST)

- O RLY? ᚱᛁᚹᛖᚾᚨᚾᛏ 18:09, 5 July 2010 (BST)
- This isn't about Revenant scrabbling for votes. I fail to see how correcting timestamps is an unreasonable thing to do; as Revenant pointed out, the comment with the correct time is clearly attributed to the original poster in the page history. Forgetting a piece of attribution that's stored elsewhere doesn't make the posters' intent any less obvious or valid. Could you explain the rationale for why this was unacceptable? ~ AphelionT 19:21, 5 July 2010 (BST)
- It actually does make it less valid. Not by logic but just by the rules of keeping a clean boundary between properly made votes and otherwise. I was simply basing this off voting guidelines of policy discussion and suggestions voting. I could give you a history lesson explaining in a very logical manner exactly why I'm not even pursuing this anymore, so I don't really know why you're jumping in. --
- I brought it up because I don't understand the thought process behind your decision, and alluding vaguely to unspecified rules isn't very helpful. I see nothing wrong with fixing attributions as long as everything is correct and properly cited. I mean, yes, you should timestamp your votes, and if you do it wrong, people are under no obligation to count it--but if someone is inclined to correct it, where's the harm? Why does a "properly made" vote have more intrinsic value than one that was later corrected by someone else when both are equally clear and equally well cited? Since the issue is no longer relevant, I'm willing to drop it, but it just seems strange to me. ~ AphelionT 01:57, 6 July 2010 (BST)
- Ask the founding fathers of the wiki where they got their decisions from, don't make me go through the A/PD archives to answer your pointless questions, again I was just following what has been used as a rule of thumb for official wiki votes, as Yonnua did when he wrote the rules. As for citing unspecified rules, well, that's just a perk of actually spending a lot of time on this place, so don't look at me as if I'm trying to cheat you out of some sort of conversational leverage, it's just the truth, and I couldn't care less whether you "buy" its legitimacy or not. I'm sorry if this seems blunt but it's only because I really don't want to have to keep grinding on about these questions when I've been proven by sysop vote that my view does not apply in this case and have happily yielded- it's a null argument now. --

Regarding the current bids. Neither Grim or Revenant meet the criteria. It's mostly good ol spam. WOOT precedent? I didn't want to drag them to A/VB since I doubt they are aware of it. But why are the bids still on? I thought stuff likes this gets moved to the talk page, not archived as Ross apparently wants let alone be seriously considered. Yeah, I'm asking you. --Thadeous Oakley 18:20, 5 July 2010 (BST)
- Well in the case of the Woot precedent, it was his third or fourth case before he was vandalbanned. These two have done it once. The general idea is if it happens multiple times, THEN it's vandalism.--Yonnua Koponen Talk ! Contribs 18:23, 5 July 2010 (BST)

As far as I see they are just tarnishing reputations and behaving like jackasses out of butthurtery, if being remembered for this is their prerogative then I don't mind. --
- Plus I don't really think this is vandalism anyway, it strongly resembles Misanthropy's stunt, and I'm willing to back it up that way. -- 01:20, 6 July 2010 (BST)
- It's usually only vandalism if its been spammed on the page multiple times (as Yonnua said.) Usually we don't worry about cycling inappropriate candidates unless they are clearly inappropriate (and this is usually done under the pretense of not gaining enough vouch votes, an example is here.) In most cases (and especially in this case,) it's usually not worth the effort/drama to cycle a bid early. Linkthewindow Talk 05:04, 6 July 2010 (BST)

We really need a better way to handle these voting deadlines. Oh, for Parser Functions! ᚱᛁᚹᛖᚾᚨᚾᛏ 06:15, 10 July 2010 (BST)
- Actually...it might be possible without them. Simple addition and subtraction is possible using switch statements, but you can only do it for preset/hardcoded ranges of numbers (at least, I've never figured out a way to do it for an arbitrary integer, but if you know a way to implement addition for an arbitrary integer using only switch statements, you let me know). In our case, however, we'd only need to go up to 31, so the arithmetic is possible. Assuming we had some way to subst in the starting month and day of the vote via a template call (which I'm not sure is possible, off the top of my head), we'd be able to add 14 days onto it. At that point, we have the end date, which we could then use for a countdown and notification, much like I did back in the earliest revisions of the Big Bash 3 page. It's probably more hassle than it's worth though, since it'd likely be a few hundred or thousand lines of wikicode (e.g. some of the logic would be similar to what I used here, which is essentially one template call away from breaking the page). A better way would be to have someone compute the end date manually then call a template that acts like a countdown/notification to that date. That'd actually be pretty simple to make. —Aichon— 08:17, 10 July 2010 (BST)
- {{SUBST:CURRENTYEAR}}-{{SUBST:CURRENTMONTH}}-{{SUBST:CURRENTDAY}} → 2010-07-10. Howzat? ᚱᛁᚹᛖᚾᚨᚾᛏ 08:46, 10 July 2010 (BST)
- But can you do all of that from a template call rather than directly on the page itself? That's the crux of the problem. The substing won't work, I believe, though there might be some ways to finagle it by using includeonly and some creative parsing. I've experimented with it in the past, and I know Rooster has too, but I don't think we've ever found success with it, from what I recall. —Aichon— 08:51, 10 July 2010 (BST)

Yeah, it was getting kinda ridiculous there. Good move. Kinda weirded me out seeing the Vouch/Againsts there as well, but figure it helps preserve the context, right? - Hmm. Like most things, I picked up that idea from whoever moved stuff over to the talk page before me, and I think it helps preserve context for whoever needs to remember it. I think it helps, it can make it look a little superficial I but in reality, it is only ever moved like that if it crosses the line into "going too far" so usually it's discussion that is considered a little unnecessary. Of course the crats should read it, it's just a majority of people shouldn't need to do get the jist of what's going on. -- 03:26, 11 July 2010 (BST)

- Most definitely, but you don't understand. It wasn't outside your right to post the accusations and request on arbitration. It's within my right to claim Aichon has been sodomising my girlfriend, even though it isn't true. But the issue I had to it was that there are two sides to every coin and my version of the story was, from the start, that there was no personal hostility towards you that I had done bar one comment I myself considered out of line. Besides that one incidence, I was only ever doing my job and the honest truth is I was taken aback when you came out with these claims because I barely recognised who you were and our past dealings; I was just doing my day to day editing.
- There are definitely some users I've had problems with in the past, that if they asked for a restraining order for a set amount of time, I wouldn't argue against it, but the day that someone comes to me and claims abuse when I've either a) not done it or b) created some sort of reaction from you when I was simply doing my day-to-day work around here, and hence a ruling of restraining order would inhibit my normal day to day work on this wiki based on unfounded claims, that's when I'm gonna argue till the cows come home.
- Have things gotten more personal since then? Most probably, but I assure you that it only happened since you shot at my thresholds relentlessly for weeks while also throwing personal quips at me. -- 03:40, 24 July 2010 (BST)

notes
I broke up the code into lines so it wasn't a blob, i don't know if that was intended but it seemed to fix a fair bit of the formatting. Somewhere in there, a code started working which gave the whole thing a nice yellow background but as I decompressed the code into lines it dissapeared again and for some reason the style tags just exploded and appeared as text, so I simply removed them. As for the minimap on the right, until I figure out how to fix the style problem I doubt I'll be able to fix it. TBH I'm not very fantastic at writing or modifying code, but I'm alright at reading it, so my help with this is always going to be limited I'm afraid. A really rough version of the changes I made are sort of here. You'll notice I took out West Grayside, for some reason it was more broken than the others so rather than try and fix it, I just gave it the boot in aid of finding the problems and fixing just one of them. I also reduced the bottom (blue) template's size from 100% to 45% so it looked a bit more organised just for my sake. --

- Moving back to your talk page, carrying on the explination from mine,... I'm in a similar boat. I can read it so so,... but editing it to make it work is something I've always enjoyed. My problem is when I tried to substitue the actuall coding to make it work instead of calling the second template in,... the whole thing breaks down like you see above. It appears that the second template is a must. But I don't want that if I don't have to have it,... I hate placing strain on the server unnecessarily. -∞ Poodle of Doom ∞ 04:43, 2 August 2010 (BST)

- The point is you can't draw an arbitrary line and not follow it uniformly. It's why I wanted hate speech codified as to whether it was A/VB-able or not. You can't say "you can't start a white supremacist group page on the wiki" but then let people call each other faggots, start groups like Columbine Kids, etc, etc. For example, this offends the Irish who were subjected to slavery and genocide at the hands of Cromwell just like this offends the Jewish people who suffered the same under Hitler. Find me a single complaint about the former. There are none, because we're not one of those knee-jerk reactionary sites that will ban anything that can be construed as offensive. - Just took a shot at fixing it (via your sig page,) although it didn't work. From memory its to do with an extra space somewhere, which puts your timestamp in the code box. It might be to do with the sig box in preferences. Linkthewindow Talk 12:10, 3 August 2010 (BST)
- DW it's a common issue when making a new sig :( but some of the tags weren't there when they were needed, this makes the sig look dandy until you use it, in which it horribly breaks everything. here is the example, but I won't bog you down with any more talking, the point is: it's fixed for now. - Yeah, that works. You just need to remember that colours may, in general, work together, but as shades brighten or darken, they'll lose the contrast that makes them work and become harder to distinguish. For example, #0000CC and #CC0000 will work side by side no problem, but as you darken one, you need to lighten the other. Burgundy and navy don't mix well, but burgundy and teal should. Blah blah bloo painting bladdy blap colour theory jiggidy blah. 04:12, 9 August 2010 (BST)

Experimental Template
Okay,... I may have a way to fix our little predicament, and help solve the problem for future groups, and would help make these sorts of issues easier in the future. Take a look: Template:Special. So, the general idea that I started with was to add the redirect to the EVIL page, and leave your blurb intact. Then I could add the disambiguation blurb on our front page, linking back to the EVIL page, unredirected,... and use that as the disambiguation page. That wouldn't work. The redirect over rides your text.
Step two was to make a template. You can see how I played around with it, and where I was going. I can get the redirect code to appear, and your text to stay on the page,... but this doesn't make the page redirect. Perhaps fresh eyes could take a look at it, and we could use something like this as a solution to our problem? -∞ Poodle of Doom ∞ 03:54, 14 August 2010 (BST)
- Possibly, I'm pretty sure it won't work though. I have to go for a few hours so I'll come back and see what other people have done to help -- 03:58, 14 August 2010 (BST)

Regarding that evil drama. In case you feel guilty or responsible for it, don't be. You gave him every chance to reach a different solution. Even offering to change your Evil Lemon thing, sacrificing your own group just to save his group is something few would have done, I probably wouldn't have, so yeah, kudos for that. In the end it's his (very) stupid mistake. --Thadeous Oakley 11:07, 15 August 2010 (BST)
- It's just fucking shocking I guess. If I'd known he could have reacted like that I would have kept 10 feet away from the whole thing. I thought, in the long run, since our groups had the name similarities, once we'd levelled up we could have had awesome roleplaying wars over who was the real EVIL, or stuff like that. The whole things fucked. -- 12:59, 15 August 2010 (BST)
Wiki Buildings Without Description
Hello,
Was just wondering, (and did not know to who I should ask too) if I spot some wiki building pages like this one for instance Keeffe_Library. They have no description, no photos, nothing at all. Can I edit and create a building storyline? Put photos and give the building "life"? (Of course I'll do that for pure creative and RP. With no dramas and THATS MY PLACE DUDE THE "MY_NAME" TOWER!!11!)
In a nutshell, is it legal to create things for buildings with no desription and no "story"? --DiSm ~ T 17:59, 15 August 2010 (BST)

Background
If I had a background that I wanted to place on a wiki page, with the general content of the page over the top of it, could I do something like that? Not what we have on the Infinity page now, but something behind that even. Is it possable? -∞ Poodle of Doom ∞ 03:22, 24 August 2010 (BST)
- Possible. Difficult, but possible. You'd need to set the background and place everything else over the top of it as a div table. It's the same principle at work in mine and DDR's sig, or on this page, for example. 03:24, 24 August 2010 (BST)
I'm going to say no to the first two, and say I could make it work on a website but not on a wiki to a third. I want a standard backgroud to the entire page, with what's there now overlaying over the top of that. The general background would be a full page type of thing. The first two examples are similar to what I already have, and wouldn't help me. The third choice offered still gives me a bit of an issue... A stationary image, not a background. -∞ Poodle of Doom ∞ 03:54, 24 August 2010 (BST)
- Poodle, the third way works fine, so long as the image is large enough (we can't tile images on the wiki, so backgrounds aren't actually possible). However, you coded it incorrectly when you did it. And if you had been less hostile and demanding towards everyone here, I'd be telling you what you did wrong. —Aichon— 23:53, 24 August 2010 (BST)
Kudos, Cookies, Free Beer, and Hotwings, to which ever one of you bitches can make it happen. Overlay whats on the page currently, over this image. -∞ Poodle of Doom ∞ 04:05, 24 August 2010 (BST)
- Not for me. Not only would it be in direct violation of "content outside of normal page area" policy, I don't think it's possible and if it were I wouldn't want to help achieve something so obnoxious. --
- Well then,... go to hell,.. and it wouldn't be outside the normal posting area, it would just fill the remainder of the area.... it wouldn't be underneath the toolbar to the left or anything like that... -∞ Poodle of Doom ∞ 04:41, 24 August 2010 (BST)

Unless they go the "guilt by association" rule for GTF's fit,it should be done for sure. As for learning about it, you'd have learned about it at least as soon the first zerg hunter had PKed you. -- Spiderzed▋ 15:38, 27 August 2010 (BST)

- The powers that be generally don't like if appealers get abusive and foul-mouthed. (And I probably wouldn't like it as well, looking how they had and have to deal with the likes of Finis Valorum, Dead Bunnies and TZH.) It's some difference though if some lying scumbags like the Dead Bunnies throw out a barrage of insults while denying even basic facts, or if a single member out of several snaps slightly in a case that has been weak to begin with. -- Spiderzed▋ 01:22, 28 August 2010 (BST)
- Yeah fair. I hoped they would overlook that since we obvs aren't zerging and I just assumed the IP was important so I didn't force the words out of any of their mouths, I just let them say whatever. And it's a ZERG LIST they maintain, if they can't handle abuse from wrongly accused people then they shouldn't be there IMO. One more question: It appears that Guy's response was moved to another thread, is that right? And why? :/ -- LEMON #1 01:29, 28 August 2010 (BST)
- The mods are running the ZL in their spare time and are basically providing a public service, at which 90% of all work _should_ already be done by Kevan (if the auto-measures were worth anything), so I grant them any right to refuse appeals on the base of "being something we don't wanna put up with". As for moving it, I have no idea if GTF's comment has been moved, and why. If it has any effect will be seen at least as soon as the next list update comes in. -- Spiderzed▋ 01:42, 28 August 2010 (BST)

The Wyke Hills/Wykewood confusion
You know, those can happen when you are updating a dozen EMRs alone. And the fact that there were two reports for Wyke Hills and one for Wykewood on that particular update didn't help either. Thought you'd like to know
It looks like your DanceDance arrows sig might be one of the ones causing issues for A/VB (the current month's archive isn't showing up on it since it has too much inclusion data), since it's a decent amount larger than the norm. This isn't a warning to fix it or anything of the sort, merely a friendly notification, since I figured you'd want to be aware of something like this. What you do with this info is your call. My best guess is that it's the images causing the issues, since the other big culprit was Mis' sig with the images in it. —Aichon— 06:45, 30 August 2010 (BST)
- Yeah, I've noticed that in IE both your sig and Mis's sig are appearing vertically. ~ Red Hawk One Talk | space for lease 06:56, 30 August 2010 (BST)
- Ah, yeah, that's an unfortunate side affect of the code that they're using to get links over their images (it's my fault, since I wrote the code). IE7 and earlier doesn't understand the "display: inline-box" stuff, I believe, so it does a "display: box" equivalent instead, which means each image gets its own line. I haven't figured out a fix yet, though I'll readily admit I haven't been looking too hard since I'm not reminded of the issue during daily use (I use something other than IE, of course). IE8 is better (so long as Compatibility Mode is disabled), in that they don't use multiple lines, but the link aspect of the code simply doesn't work in IE8 (yet? Rooster was working on it as recently as yesterday or so). —Aichon— 07:04, 30 August 2010 (BST)
- Thanks heaps for that info guys. I do like the arrows sig but I've always understood there'd most likely be some sort of unfixable problem with them, so I have no issue removing it and just redirecting it to my current lemon signature. is it just affecting the inclusion on the A/VB page? Or did the signatures in the archive itself also refuse to display? If the former was the only issue, I might wait till the month is over, revert the sig back to the arrows and just continue from there on with my current sig. -- LEMON #1 07:22, 30 August 2010 (BST)

Just a note on the arrows sig, you can use Template:ClickInternal for the images now. Good news is that it works (thank Aichon), bad news is that it's weighty so using it on several images is bad, mmmkay? Also you have to use it because I said so or I'll get all sig policy on your ass. -- RoosterDragon 07:16, 1 September 2010 (BST)

I haven't touched those scrollboxes in over a year pretty much and I originally got them from my ex-boyfriend op User:Linkthewindow, and you can see his speakbox is easily confined within simple tables so I don't think something you're mentioning is outside of reason. -- LEMON #1 10:03, 10 September 2010 (BST)

Greetings
Hello, Mr. Revolution. I cordially come to you to ask you a simple question regarding your edits to our screenshots. Why do you insinuate we zerg? Is it because we have screen captures of our own events? If that is the case, it can easily be explained. We do have members just waiting to record our... successes. --Dracula 06:31, 14 September 2010 (BST)
- Nup. It's just cause when I have a hundred or so images/pages to categorise in one sitting I just put funny edit summaries down. I'm deprived of fun or amusement in this "hobby" nowadays and want a reaction. No fault to you for enquiring either, zerging is a bad allegation and one I had to go through much stress to stomp down of my group from some butthurt zombie on the Zerg Liste forums. As for the origination of the call? I heard lots of things from Umbrella's wenches about you guys. -- LEMON #1 09:14, 14 September 2010 (BST)
- Ah, I see. Good to know it's not personal. Haha, now that you mention Umbrella, they love to throw the zerging accusations around when they're defeated/owned. They love to spread lies. Seems like they have members that partake in zerging, but I'm not going to worry about that. Just killing them. I'm grateful for the fast reply. --Dracula 11:31, 14 September 2010 (BST)
Passing Through
Just thought to stop by and say hello. And ask an unsolicited personal question.
On a serious note, DDR, I think you've gotten far more...eh, Cyberbobish. Grimish. Less tolerant. Looking at a random sampling of your edits, you seem a lot more prone to assuming general incompetence of the people you talk to, as compared to a year+ ago. Yes, people change, hell Grim was nice once...a long time ago, in a wiki far, far, away, true. My comment about jadedness was meant as a mild tweak at best, but your response I took to be far more virulent then I was honestly expecting.
I am not your friend, so I realise this is presumptive, but I would appreciate an answer. I do think you do good work and have a pretty good record as an admin, but my memory of your seeming wiki persona a year ago is at serious odds with your present one. Has adminship caused this, or just overexposure to general asshattery and the grind of the wiki? -Wulfenbach 06:56, 15 September 2010 (BST)
- No prob. I think it's a mixture of things. The main one is my current lifestyle IRL, I'm having much less time I can call my own and I'm constantly strung out and burned out from work and university and I think my willingness to spend my small amount of time arguing on UDWiki is waning. I still like to come around because I'm still playing the game with IRL friends, but I no longer bother pretending that if UDWiki was a real life establishment it'd be one I'd attend in a suit and tie. My focus is on fixing up the place as a resource for players, and to stop vandalism and help users interested in coding or events. Beyond that I've been really intolerant towards extraneous arguing even if it's within these realms of my interests. You're right, I've become a lot more retarded of late, but it's a personal problem, not actually an in-wiki problem I think. I also got burned out from my reign as a bureaucrat in early 2010 and that's when I decided the wiki was something I could no longer spend hours a day on. Also, when I was a sysop a year ago there was a reason to take this place and my position seriously from a managerial point of view because between the inept ops, the inactive ones and the dickheads it was a fight to have this place running properly. At one point, for a month, Cyberbob and I were the only ops managing A/VB or any other admin pages. Now, we are (imo) a much better team and all of them have a great presence and work hard for the members, so the need to go over the top with rhetoric and arguing isn't as imperative now, especially since the wiki has been so drama free in the last month or so.
- From the sysop side I still follow protocol and respect the rules in place and I don't want to leave UDWiki, op or otherwise. In the end though, any real behavioural issues on UDWiki just culminated from IRL circumstances and hopefully it's just a phase. -- LEMON #1 07:36, 15 September 2010 (BST)
- Well, here's to your recovery then. I had the luxury of a forced departure (twice now) of RL more or less demanding my absolute presence, so I suppose that's why I can still come back here and want to be productive without necessarily Grimish (I think you know what I mean by that).
- You know, a while ago...a long time ago, when I was actually actively helping out here and really trying to be a better wiki-person, I gave thought to app'ing for sysop. I looked at the existing crew, looked at their postings as early as I could go back and compared them to their then-present ones. I realized that the difference mimic'd the difference I see in the LARP community among organizers. Namely: LARPer -> Organizer -> Eager -> Helpful -> HELPFUL -> Wise -> Opinionated -> Protective -> Vindictive -> Jaded -> Ex-LARPer. Since I had just reached the jaded phase with that, I figured that going back over that path with UD would mean that I wouldn't ever want to come back. Which would be sad, I think, since I do like the RRF's people. They tend, IMO, to be pretty fun and enjoyable as a web-group, and to walk away from UD would have to have me leaving them permanently. So I didn't app, which in hindsight, was for the best.
- Have you thought about pulling away, yourself, now that the team is in your opinion, stable? Taking a six month break from UD to get RL sorted, maybe? -Wulfenbach 07:51, 15 September 2010 (BST)
- I tried, I still found myself coming back daily for bugging the sysops for the small jobs I didn't think they did right, plus I was still spending just as much time here anyway so I was put back up to be sysop. I think behaviour like that indicates that I still wanted to be around the place, and now I'm more involved in the actual game than I have been in two years, so it's a weird situation at the moment for me to be in. Since I'm still convinced it's a phase, I'm just going to linger around doing the chores and helping out and being a bug to guys like you before something breaks on the wiki's side or mine ;D -- LEMON #1 08:01, 15 September 2010 (BST)
- See, that's the real infection here. It's not Necrotech fuckupery, it's this damn game. We need to find Kevan and get trenchie on this ass. Headshot RL for me, will he? >:D -Wulfenbach 09:31, 15 September 2010 (BST)

User page rights
Right, on my user and talk pages, the use of the click template (The one in Mis' sig and your old one) essentially destroys the page by making a massive white space at the bottom of the page. Do I therefore have the right to replace people's signatures with the {{usr}} template? I wanted to have a check before I did anything.--Yonnua Koponen Talk ! Contribs 18:26, 15 September 2010 (BST)

I'm Interested in becoming a Sysop
Hey Dance,
We've spoken once or twice on here, and I saw that you are one so i thought it best to ask you. I rather like contributing and helping out on here, and I think I'd like to become a Sysop. I haven't quite been here 2 months, and only have 420 contribs, so not sure I can apply yet...
Anyway, whats involved? Any tips? -Dezonus- (talk) 15:23, 16 September 2010 (BST)
- Trust me when I say this, I've went through your contribs. What you have so far is not enough to warrant a good SysOps bid. If you really, really want to be a SysOps, start by sulking around the Admin pages more often, cycling news archives and suggestions, etc. --•▬ ▬••▬ • •••• •▬ ▬•▬• ▬•▬ #nerftemplatedsigs 15:33, 16 September 2010 (BST)
- Read this.--Yonnua Koponen Talk ! Contribs 15:52, 16 September 2010 (BST)
- We always love having interested users in becoming a Sysop, but first they need to understand the system in which they work. This includes the administration pages like Move Requests, Deletions, Speedy Deletions, and others like Vandal Banning. You have to understand the job you're asking for and we need to be convinced that you do. Besides that, it's always recommended that you know the community well and integrate well with their projects and tasks that try and make the wiki a better information resource. I'm not sure if Yonnua's link to previous advice is specifically the best thing for you to read literally because it's what he may do, but you need to be able to do your own thing on the wiki and still be able to help out in your own ways and with your own opinions. But the intention is the same- you need to exhibit your (obviously) keen interest in the community by involving yourself more in many of the wiki's facets. -- LEMON #1 03:35, 17 September 2010 (BST)
- Tip #1, and I don't mean this with any discourtesy or rudeness (really, I honestly don't), but research the answers yourself, rather than asking questions like "what's involved" to become a sysop (the answer is posted on A/PM). Asking questions like that is an immediate signal to all of us that you don't understand the system well enough...yet. Eager folks like you can and do learn the system eventually by reading through the policies, admin pages, and archives, so that shouldn't be a discouragement to you in the least. But sysops are expected (though it's not part of the official job description) to be decently knowledgeable about the way the wiki works, and that means understanding both the bureaucracy and some of the technical stuff better than the average user.
- As for other advice, I'd agree with Yonn's suggestion to look for a project. There are always things that need cleaning up around here and discussions to be had where opinions are solicited (e.g. there's talk of an RP List redesign on General Discussion right now, I've been working (very slowly) on rethinking the Suggestions system, there are always ideas on Developing Suggestions in need of thoughtful advice, Ross is working (also slowly) on redesigning the Zombie Skills pages, etc.). Getting involved on the admin pages, especially by expressing your opinion in the proper places (always be sure to do it in the proper places, since doing it in the wrong place is once again a signal to us that you don't yet understand how things work) is also a great way to let us get a feel for how you think and form opinions, which you'll be expected to do regularly as a sysop. —Aichon— 04:26, 17 September 2010 (BST)
- I Thank you all immensely for your help in this matter. I had read through the [A/PM] page, the main thing was that it wasn't quite clear where you apply to, but reading what you guys have written, I'm not quite ready just yet.
- As for a project, I wasn't quite sure what somebody who is not a sysop is permitted to do. I've noticed in a few subburbs, the "Suburb Group Listing" and "Active Groups" are very different. South Blythville, for example, has 3 groups in "Suburb Group Listing" and 12 in "Active groups". If I'm allowed to, I would like to follow up with the groups, and remove those inactive off the Active groups. I know similar has been done for Suburb Group listing. -Dezonus- (talk) 13:54, 17 September 2010 (BST)
Want to run a contest for the Urban Dead Wiki
i was wondering if i could run a contest on the Urban Dead Wiki. most notably a contest of art. i am look to put an advert for my in-game group on the UD page, via spending ten bucks. i was wondering if i could have a contest to who can come up with the best artwork for said advert. notably a prize of me spending the extra 5 bucks to make that persons in-game character immune to the IP limit seems sufficient enough. what do you think —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Nuerotoxic2213 (talk • contribs) at an unknown time.

Days in Urban Dead
Aww man, I'd have liked to see a new one. This isn't because we have gaps is it? Because I can envisage some sort of crazy bot (always the best kind, the crazy sort) that could fill in the gaps. Unless you meant something else?
I want a video dammit! -- RoosterDragon 18:00, 18 September 2010 (BST)
- ^This--RosslessnessWant a Location Image? 18:42, 18 September 2010 (BST)
- Mate, if you could do that, then making one more video would really be within my grasp. I have a few harrowing problems that have also come up, the biggest being that it's 80% likely that I don't even have the original 220 images anymore anymore, so I'll have to do my best to trawl through old backups to see if I still have them. Between searching for the backups and the old .avi versions I have I should be able to get a working version of the original 200 days to use. Once I've done that, I'll hit you up and see if you can make a crazy bot to help me get them images. Thanks man. -- LEMON #1 02:30, 19 September 2010 (BST)
- Alright, I've lost all the 220 original images and I dont have the original video but I've managed to nab the Youtube FLV that is embedded onto the video page, I should be able to make a more or less functional replacement from that. As for your crazy bot, if you're still keen, we'll need images from April 28th 2008 to whenever you see fit. See, after 200 days I didn't do ANY screencapping so I don't have any single screenshots at all from April 2008. How do you envision the bot will operate? Do you think it's possible when this many screenshots are needed? -- LEMON #1 06:20, 19 September 2010 (BST)
- Well I left the bot running today and let it slowly load each revision page, so I've got the info now. Seeing as we need like 700 images, I'll see if I can just have it fake an image that looks like a dangermap so we don't have to take screencaps from the wiki ourselves. I'll post an example if I get it to work. Also, the last purge only seems to have left us with stuff from about September 08, so... yeah. -- RoosterDragon 17:45, 19 September 2010 (BST)
- Horrific time dealing with fonts. Anyway: yesterday's map. The original has nicer anti-aliased text but it's so huge on filesize I'll stick with the plainer one. I'll get around to automating the others at some point. -- RoosterDragon 11:04, 20 September 2010 (BST)
- That should be more than adequate, looks great and shouldn't look any different from the original 200 days. I've thought about the 6 month gap in images we'll have lost by the time this is through, what are your thoughts? Should I start from my old 2007 archive and go straight through to today? Or should we just start straight from Sep 2008 where your collection starts? Advantages of having them both is that that 200 day period had a lot of rich history displayed and there was a fairly significant lack of events for a year and a bit from mid-2008 too. Cons include the fact it's been seen before anyway, and it'd be hard to incorporate them into one another with a 6 month gap. Leaning towards the latter, thoughts? -- LEMON #1 11:23, 20 September 2010 (BST)
- I think I'd go for a separate video given the gap. Shame really, because if you combine the wayback machine, manual coverage and current revisions, that gap is pretty much the only big gap is the history. Man if only we had those old revisions. -- RoosterDragon 11:45, 20 September 2010 (BST)
- Yeah. Actually, Suburb/History does have about 20 or so. It covers the process hideously sporadically but if sped up it probably won't look that bad. But I'll see which route should ultimately be taken by trial and error once I get a few images together. -- LEMON #1 12:59, 20 September 2010 (BST)
- Well the bots working on it right now, uploading as fast as pngout can compress the things down to size. Once it's done I can zip up the whole set and e-mail them if you like, less hassle than using the wiki for each and every one. -- RoosterDragon 13:17, 20 September 2010 (BST)
- And now would be a bad time to realise that there's a template called "MapDanger" which means all the old "MapVeryDanger" have been mapped wrongly. Fuuuuu - at least the more recent stuff works since the system isn't retarded anymore. -- RoosterDragon 13:24, 20 September 2010 (BST)
- Fuck. Surely no one would mind us recreating it ;D. As for the emailing option, sounds much better than doing ti via wiki. I'll email you just now so you can grab my email without me later having to go through the future hassle of eradicating my email from google search indexes. -- LEMON #1 13:26, 20 September 2010 (BST)
- Actually, simple redirection to the new ones could suffice... right? -- LEMON #1 13:27, 20 September 2010 (BST)
- Oh no, it's my fault, not the wiki's :P. Anytime a "VeryDanger" was the status in a revision it got recorded as orange not red because I didn't know of the clash. It resulted in some very orange maps as you can tell. I'll have to rebuild the revision history so that'll take the better part of a day. Gives me a chance to poke around the old templates though, that's good fun. -- RoosterDragon 13:43, 20 September 2010 (BST)

Can I run a small scale Suburb Massacre?
Hey there,
So I'm asking you, because I'm not sure whether I'd be allowed to or not, and I also get the impression certain other sysops don't like me...
I'm thinking of running a small scale Suburb Massacre, of a 1 suburb radius around South Blythville, covering "Suburb Group Listing" and "Active Groups" (In suburbs that have that further down in their page)
Can I do it? -Dezonus- (talk) 01:56, 19 September 2010 (BST)
- Yes, I recommend it. Those pages that have second group listings further down the page on suburb pages are REALLY out of date and should be cleaned up. You really know what you should do though? Make it a project for the entirety of Malton and see if anyone is willing to help, and IN the project you can just organise and focus on the subrubs you care about but others can do the rest. That way you fix all of malton. That's just a thought, but you are free to do whatever you want from here when it comes to cleaning up suburb pages. -- LEMON #1 02:16, 19 September 2010 (BST)

Photo Upload
Hello DDR! Just wanted to know I saw you changing some pages on maps I uploaded. What do I miss when uploading? Where should I put categorising? --DiSm ~ T 09:57, 19 September 2010 (BST)
- Hey- A summary of what to do and how to do it is here. Basically, we just have a few categories we use to file all our images under. You'll have already been familiar with Category:Maps and Category:Screenshots as that is what I categorised some of your images as. To do this, just add [[Category:XXXXXXX]] anywhere on the image description.
- You don't need to do categorise as you upload- practically no one does, that's why I tend to do it. But if you do it saves us the trouble of doing it later. You're free to choose whether you want to do it or not in the long run, I won't mind either way. -- LEMON #1 11:48, 19 September 2010 (BST)

- fair enough I guess. You accepted it without much of a whinge and it was cycled easily. There's also a tonne (ie 90% of cases) where they are cycled as per this precedent, and also many precedents where I noted a conflict of interest between my own vote and my duties at hand and got a neutral party to cycle the proposal for me rather than "vendetta" it myself. I've taken to the Orphanage as well as uncategorized images and pages...just wondering how you think i'm going? -Dezonus- (talk) 00:07, 11 October 2010 (BST)
- You're definitely getting better, but you're still making messies like voting on A/VB cases which everyone knows you can't do unless you're an op. It's all well and good to try and become op-worthy ASAP but you might need to sample the wiki for more time rather than effort before you become a model user. This is why I hat promotions being run concurrently. Technically your vote on Thad means if you become crat, his bid will be automatically vetoed, which by extension might mean people were more or less likely to vote you into the position. --RosslessnessWant a Location Image? 11:19, 14 October 2010 (BST)
- That's not true, Iscariot might have thought it that way but as a crat I'm expected to act in accordance with community opinion, not specifically my own. MY IP Banning
Doesn't seem to be working. Any idea why? --RosslessnessWant a Location Image? 10:07, 26 October 2010 (BST)
- I tried, and it said that ""72.254.128.202" is already blocked". Also, in the Special:Blockip display of the block log it showed "72.254.128.202" not "User:72.254.128.202", so I'm a little lost right now. -- LEMON #1 10:34, 26 October 2010 (BST)
- Furthermore, I was going to give the user benefit of the doubt since the MO was slightly different than Cornholioo, but since he's using an open proxy, and we can't ban the proxy due to wiki bug reasons, a page protection is in order? Best wait for someone smart like Aichon and not dumb like us though. -- LEMON #1 10:36, 26 October 2010 (BST)
- Yeah, that's why I went Proxy Route. Looking at the opening sentence I think its someone who doesn't quite know english, and the rest looks a copy and paste job. --RosslessnessWant a Location Image? 10:44, 26 October 2010 (BST)
- If that is any evidence, it would be in the sockpuppet naming tradition. Hermann is the German name of Germanic warlord Arminius, and it was Teutoburg where he has beaten the Romans. -- Spiderzed▋ 10:57, 26 October 2010 (BST)
- Mmmm. And since we can't seem to ban the IP (after its "blocking" it seems he can still edit using it) we may have no choice but to protect the page until he can show us he's editing with an IP that isn't a proxy. Other calls are that we permaban the user (and the wiki software will automatically ban his IP) and then manually unban the user, but leave the automatically banned IP alone (since I'm pretty sure we have to manually unban the IP too in those cases) -- LEMON #1 11:12, 26 October 2010 (BST)
- The problem is that Ross set the block to be for anonymous users only (just as he seemingly always does for IP blocks, though I'm not sure why). Basically, since Hermann isn't an anonymous user, he's effectively grandfathered in and allowed to keep posting with that IP address. I'm going to change the block to not allow known users either. Open proxies are banned, after all, for anonymous and non-anonymous users alike. —Aichon— 19:18, 27 October 2010 (BST)

Protocol for Adding Edits to Protected Historical Event Pages
So what's the protocol for adding edits to a protected historical event page?
Long story short, we have a couple of articles in which people like Petrosjko and other RRF leaders talk about memories / planning / stories from the early days of the RRF. We would like to add a link to the Dia de los Muertos, First Siege of Caiger Malland Stanstock protected pages to these history articles, which all give memories / perspectives from the zombie side/planners who helped make those events possible.
Here are the articles we would like to link to:
- Events leading up to, memories of Stanstock would go with the Stanstock article
- RRF planning, memories of Caiger would go with the 1st Caiger Siege article
- RRF planning, memories of Dia de los Muertos would go with the Dia de los Muertos / Giddings article
So...how would this work exactly? Would I post a request in the Protected Page section or what? -MHSstaff 21:57, 30 October 2010 (BST)
- If you want an edit made to a protected page, go to Protections. I don't know about this though, it may be best to have links on the talk pages (Which may also be protected.)--User:Yonnua Koponen/signature3 22:07, 30 October 2010 (BST)
- So you would post the requested page and the requested edit there? -MHSstaff 22:14, 30 October 2010 (BST)
- Yep. Then someone should get to it really quickly.--User:Yonnua Koponen/signature3 22:16, 30 October 2010 (BST)
- One thing I could see happening is the link would be protected but the linked article would not be. Would it make sense to also submit a protection request for the linked article in conjunction with this request so that it could not be edited following approval (if this crazy idea was approved)? -MHSstaff 22:39, 30 October 2010 (BST)
- Mmmmm... Nah. In circumstances where the page could be modified by anyone, yeah, but they just link to more pages basically under the wing of the RRF so it's hardly abusable. And if something does happen, the links can just be contested on A/PT and possibly removed without any harm to the article. -- LEMON #1 01:13, 31 October 2010 (BST)

The only place I really remember one of these instances off-hand was here, where your opinion was, quite frankly, wrong and very short sighted IMO. I'd suggest taking active work within the community. Or you could just run, and see what the whole community thinks, not just me (thats what I did before I got ops). -- LEMON #1 08:42, 10 November 2010 (UTC)
Voting Expressing opinions on Sysop Elections?
When did we start doing that? --RosslessnessWant a Location Image? 11:43, 11 November 2010 (UTC)
- I think the question should be when did we stop doing that? Boxy and SA used to quite often, much to Iscariots dismay, and I've always freely expressed my opinion as a user/sysop. I think with Dez it's even more called for, since he's so often asking me of his opinion as a sysop. You may be mister neutral, but I'm mr... not neutral? -- LEMON #1 12:17, 11 November 2010 (UTC)
- Mr.... Positive or Negative? Box has never done it in my time and as usual I see Iscariot's pov. Hmm.... (goes to form an opinion). --RosslessnessWant a Location Image? 12:26, 11 November 2010 (UTC)
- He definitely has made opinions on A/PM cases, maybe not saying Against or Vouch (I don't remember a case of him doing that though I think he has) but he's definitely taken the time to post his opinions on candidates while crat. He was crat when he wrote on my A/PM bid, after all. -- LEMON #1 12:37, 11 November 2010 (UTC)
- Yes, but he didn't state a vouch, against preference. As for the last time box "Expressed an opinion positive or negative", I'd say trawling looks like UDWiki:Administration/Promotions/Honestmistake in mid 2009. I don't see a need for it, as you'll have perfect time to express your opinion at the end of the two weeks period. --RosslessnessWant a Location Image? 17:18, 11 November 2010 (UTC)
- At the end of the two weeks it ain't my opinion, it's my opinion on the community consensus. He wants feedback and I think I have decent feedback for him. Not like it really matters anyway imo, and I've always done it without trouble or without dealing with any major conflict of interest. -- LEMON #1 21:36, 11 November 2010 (UTC)
- I have to disagree. A bureaucrat should be able to give his personal opinion at all times. After two weeks he makes a decision based on community opinion which includes his own. It ultimately boils down to trusting someone to be able to make a distinction between the interest of himself and the community. Considering bureaucrats are the most trusted users through A/(B)PM already, this shouldn't be an issue. --Thadeous Oakley 21:46, 11 November 2010 (UTC)
- I have no problem with advice, or feedback, its the bolding that bothers me darling. It reinforces the incorrect impression its a vote. my darling. --RosslessnessWant a Location Image? 22:06, 11 November 2010 (UTC)

- Only an idiot like Conndraka (read Honestmistake's bid, hilarious) would still think this is a vote. The bolded part serves as a one-word summary of a person's opinion, the stuff behind the "vote" explains the reasoning. This is the only way it should be taken. And what's up with darling? Are you hitting on me? Gotta tell ya, I chuckled when you "offered your services" on A/A, but don't creep me out :0. --Thadeous Oakley 22:16, 11 November 2010 (UTC)

- A compliment on UDWiki is often much more threatening than a flame attack. --RosslessnessWant a Location Image? 22:18, 11 November 2010 (UTC)

- Yeah, you're both basically right, I'd say. It's perfectly acceptable and allowed, but just because you have every right to do it, doesn't mean it should be done. Even so, now that you've done it, I don't think you did anything wrong; it just would have been better if you hadn't. It might not even be a fortnight. The request has been filed on November 10. Counting Trip's weak vouch and Dez' op itself, there are just 2 vouches. Didn't promotion bids require 3 vouches within 24 hours to get under consideration? (Not that I think that whether letting it fade away at the scheduled pace or FFing the whole process will make a difference in the final outcome, looking at the way the discussion has run so far.) -- Spiderzed▋ 18:45, 13 November 2010 (UTC)
- Not at all. Promotions hold two purposes, the second one is to gain feedback from the community. Dez's bid is doing this in probably the most constructive way I've ever seen. Axe hack didn't decide on his recent promotion bid until a week after he was nominated. It stays. --RosslessnessWant a Location Image? 18:51, 13 November 2010 (UTC)

- I'm figuring that 3-4 images per second should be sufficient to allow people to discern each day while also moving along at a decent clip, which would give you about 3-4 minutes of video. Plus, it lets you work in some better tracks. Also, it'd be really cool if you both could tell us what date it was in the video (i.e. have the current month and year at the top) and then could correlate specific events to parts of the video by having either notes or comments over the video saying when things started or ended, such as the Bashes, Escape, etc., that way we could see the state of the city and know what it was all about. —Aichon— 19:09, 7 December 2010 (UTC)
- I've always tried to speed them up as much as possible since 3-4 minutes of a dangermap IMO is too long for most people to bother. According to Youtube's Hotspots, the lengths I've made so far for 100 and 200 have been adequate apparently, and I think 3-4 minutes would be too long. I could always speed up the boring bits and focus on the battles/events in slower motion, though. -- LEMON #1 21:57, 7 December 2010 (UTC)

- We need an idea of length. Personally the ending music from the original dawn of the dead always wins.--RosslessnessWant a Location Image? 12:23, 7 December 2010 (UTC)
Do you have a way of sharing the raw danger map images in a zipped file? It might look better if the suburb names were removed. -MHSstaff 20:27, 7 December 2010 (UTC)
- http://www.megaupload.com/?d=XXX5PCL9 - it'd be a mammoth task though. -- LEMON #1 21:57, 7 December 2010 (UTC)
- It's actually pretty straightforward and automated otherwise I would never go near this. Any of these feel like "that special someone"?
- The suburb names are fixed and never change so all you have to do is pull the color from a fixed sets of points for each burb, make your new map, loop through all the images and resave them with a magic computer thingamajig doohickey. Pick your favorite and I'll let it run through all the images you gave me.-MHSstaff 04:26, 8 December 2010 (UTC)
Inserting my comment out of chronological order - I like the 1st and 2nd ones. The contrast looks better with those borders.--GANG Giles Sednik CAPD 20:51, 8 December 2010 (UTC)
- I don't know. I kinda liked the suburb names. Gives a better overview and it's not like I know the entire map by heart.--(Thad)eous Oakley Talk 09:55, 8 December 2010 (UTC)
- TBH I do to, but I'm fine with giving the community creative control over this instead of just me like usual. -- LEMON #1 14:21, 8 December 2010 (UTC)
- Yeah but they are completely pointless (other than making the images look super low res) since you can't even remotely read them in the video. -MHSstaff 15:34, 8 December 2010 (UTC)
- That's likely because YouTube converts to flv and the compression causes some (or a lot) of lossiness (I am assuming since I haven't downloaded the screengrabs myself). Try Vimeo. It may not be as much of a household name like YouTube but the videos are noticable smoother. Now if the jpegs are just bad quality or you have to stretch them to fill the video, then by all means remove the names. One less pixely looking eyesore to clutter the video. ~ 16:08, 8 December 2010 (UTC)
- DDR is probably the best judge since he has an idea of what they will look like in the video. I say if you can read the names clearly, than it is probably worth keeping them. Otherwise, I would consider dropping them. Just let me know what you think works best for the project. -MHSstaff 16:21, 8 December 2010 (UTC)
- YouTube just uses Flash to deliver the underlying video, which I believe they convert to h.264 format so that it can also be seen from devices that don't support Flash. It's just a matter of resolution, and nowadays YouTube supports resolutions well beyond even 1080p (they actually support 4K, which is better than what IMAX typically uses). I think when DDR last did his videos, they didn't support HD resolutions, but they've steadily improved to keep pace with Vimeo and the like, so the loss shouldn't be nearly as bad. What might look kinda neat is to fade all the suburb colors based on time since last change, and have the active ones which are changing light up in normal, shiny, bright colors. This would be a no-text option since reconstructing the text would be too hard. -MHSstaff 18:23, 8 December 2010 (UTC)
Just for reference, I still have the files I created from the records. No reason I couldn't use them to churn out some images without names. Or even different images, say a 100x100 grid of just the basic colour. User:The Rooster/Sig 20:41, 8 December 2010 (UTC)
Lolsig
Just now saw your latest signature. I hadn't realized you had ever done anything after that conversation we had awhile back. Cool stuff. User:Aichon/Signature 23:36, 7 December 2010 (UTC)
- Man, I was boning about with shit but failing so hard that I gave up after a while. It's still something I want to endeavour to master, but I'm more keen on just waiting till someone somehow makes an easier version. Like how I slaved over understanding Boxy's shadows and then a year later I saw someone on the minecraft wiki with a super easy shadow code :D -- User:DanceDanceRevolution/l 00:17, 8 December 2010 (UTC)

- Pop open the page in Safari or Chrome. Compare against my signature or my header on my userspace pages. Should be fairly obvious then. Firefox and IE don't support it yet, but they hopefully will one day. User:Aichon/Signature 03:19, 8 December 2010 (UTC)

Thanks
Thanks for fixing whatever I did wrong. I'm new to the wiki thing and im still getting used to how everything works. Didn't know that I posted it on the main page. Template:Unsigned
Thanks. How do I
Thanks for the pointers on my page. I think I'm getting better and our group site is looking pretty good. There are two problems I'm still having though and perhaps you could point me in the right direction. Both problems are in regards to our PHOBIA group site. First, I got the templates positioned correctly, but the background color is no longer solid. By spacing them did I screw it up, or is there code I can use? Second, I was thinking of a barbedwire border around the whole page. Where would I look for different borders? If you could point me in the right direction that would be great. --Mr Watt 08:30, 16 December 2010 (UTC)
