Radio Service in Malton was originally restricted by the Military, but has been unblocked and made available for survivor use.

Using the Radio System

Certain frequencies require you to have a proper skill to transmit on, but you can tune in and listen to any frequency. The Military has reserved certain lower frequencies for their own use, and reports on the status of suburbs they are overflying can be heard on these channels. However, they are jammed against broadcasts from inside the city.

To use the network, you need to have either a radio transceiver or a handheld receiver. Transceivers are normally found in Tech Stores inside most Malls, but have been occasionally found inside Fire Stations and Warehouses. Handheld receivers are found in Mall Tech Stores as well, but more commonly turn up in Police Departments and Fire Stations.

A transceiver allows you to send and receive radio transmissions, but it must be set-up in a building with power from a Generator. Once it has been installed, it is impossible to pack-up. As they are large items, they can be destroyed by both Humans and Zombies. Handheld receivers, however, are battery-powered and light enough to carry in one's personal items stash. The drawback is that they cannot be used for transmissions. Several frequencies can be monitored by carrying multiple receivers, but only one transceiver can be setup per building, with a limit of one frequency monitored.

Tactical Use

Unlike Mobile Phones, use of the radio network enables instant mass-communication across Malton, at low cost of AP per person reached. However, they can be heard by anybody tuned to the proper frequency, so discretion is advised. By carrying multiple receivers, a citizen can listen in to multiple channels (ie: a city-wide frequency, a suburb frequency and a group frequency).

Both mobile phone messages and radio messages can be read at no AP cost. However, phone towers are often under attack and service is somewhat patchy.

As you can only talk to the 50 people closest to you, it is useful to have a radio transceiver installed in large buildings (Malls, Forts, NT facilities, etc), as all persons inside the building can hear you make a call over the radio. This provides for easy mass communication. Care must be taken, however, to avoid clogging up the airwaves with conversations best made either through chatting (perhaps by moving to a nearby empty building) or over the SMS Network. Also see examples of possible etiquette and protocol to use in chatting.

With radios being so useful to mass communication to survivors, zombies have taken to destroying transceivers at the same time as generators, to prevent a SOS call from being made by the survivors inside.

However, radios are high-maintenance items, and require a Generator, with its constant need for fuel. Small survivor groups often have a hard time maintaining transmitters for this reason.

Known Frequencies

New Allocations

Many groups have established a radio frequency that they use. Group maintainers are free to list their radio frequency in the list below.

Fill new entries in order of station MHz number, into entries marked as AVAILABLE. If more than one claim is made to any particular entry, please list both (indented) under one entry. Sharing of frequencies should only be done in limited cases.

Please choose from the following declarations for your entry:

xx.xx MHz: Group Link
xx.xx MHz: Group Link -- Location Link/Description

All Malls have at least 1 dedicated frequency and all suburbs belong to at least 1 frequency, through their district assignment.

Frequency Allocation Removal Process

The criteria for clearing up the below lists are as follows:

  • A frequency that is not linked to an existing group, building, or other wiki page
  • A frequency that has a link, but is a dead link
  • A frequency that is linked to a historical group page

Occasionally, groups may be removed on bulk.

Any issues in clearing out stale frequencies should be taken to the talk page.

Please Note: This page is no longer in use; the current frequency list is hosted directly on the Radio page. This page is kept for archival purposes.

External Military Frequencies

External Military Frequencies in this range are jammed and citizens may not broadcast on them except where noted.

As these are specialist frequencies, these may not be claimed.

25.90MHz through 25.99MHz

  • 25.90 MHz - Unused?
  • 25.91 MHz - Unused?
  • 25.92 MHz - Emergency Broadcast System - Players must be in The Coram Building to transmit on this frequency.
  • 25.93 MHz - Unused?
  • 25.94 MHz - Unused?
  • 25.95 MHz - Unused?
  • 25.96 MHz - External Military Reports - Regular transmissions by the external military on the status of various suburbs.
  • 25.97 MHz - Fort Transmissions - Players must be in Fort Creedy's storehouse to transmit on this frequency.
  • 25.98 MHz - Fort Transmissions - Players must be in Fort Perryn's southwestern storehouse to transmit on this frequency.
  • 25.99 MHz - Unused?

Closed Frequencies

Closed Frequencies require the operator to be trained in Radio Operation before they can be broadcast on. Any survivor can tune any radio to these frequencies, however.

26.00MHz through 26.20MHz - District Frequencies

  • 26.00 MHz - General Chat

These frequencies have been in use a long time. Changes to them are unlikely to be supported, unless there is broad and well considered agreement.
If you wish to edit this section, please leave a note on the Talk:Radio page explaining why, and give others at least 2 weeks to reply before editing.

Open Frequencies

Open Frequencies can be broadcast on by any Survivor, without the need for training in radio operation that other frequencies require. As such, they are more frequently used by groups that are newer to the game, and often are filled with unwanted interference from rogue broadcasters.

Pirate/other radio

Pirate Radio stations may broadcast anything on any frequency. These stations do not follow agreed transmission protocols and may broadcast slanderous comments, tasteless commentary or may simply be 'underground' music broadcasters. they may also include dissident groups.

The pirate broadcasters typically broadcast on whatever channel their local transmitter happens to be on at that moment. However, some target specific groups on their frequencies, broadcasting undesirable comments or simply spamming the channels.

  • Cruxshadow Pirate Radio broadcasts on whatever channel is convenient (i.e., whatever channel the transmitter's currently tuned to). Generally, they broadcast lyrics from songs and sign off with "This is Cruxshadow Radio, a pirate broadcast in Queen's English from some time after now. May server protect us all . . . please help me . . . "
  • WPKU is a Pirate Station involving on-air PKing. A typical broadcast involves a mock interview with the victim, with the final shot being delivered at the moment that the PKer/interviewer asks the victim a question. It is broadcast on the channel dedicated to the suburb that the PKer/interviewer is currently located in.
  • Enlightenment Radio, originally the radio station of the Philosophe Knights broadcast on 27.98, now acts as the voice of the PKA, broadcasting forboding poems and songs before mass PKer strikes, and information concerning the reason for the strikes. While no longer on its original frequency, it still is the dedicated channel for the Philosophe Knights, and is used by them to broadcast lectures to the populace. Generally, Broadcasts begin by stating: "This is Enlightenment Radio, bring you a special message..." followed by a poem, song, or comedic essay. It is broadcast on frequencies relevant to the suburb or building that the PKers are targetting.
  • Malton revolution radio is a subversive, anarchist/libertarian pirate station whos operatives broadcast on any frequency they can find, but take special pride in using government, military, and fascist stations to broadcast their message.
  • The Birling Bulletin is a radio show for the inhabitants of Tompson Mall and neighbouring buildings. It gets its fair share of spam. The Bulletin itself broadcasts local, 'mall wide' news.
  • The Voice of Order broadcasts music, status reports, random messages and other.. stuff. It is run by Infrastructure, and broadcasts on the local frequency, currently 26.77 MHz. In other words, from the area around Tynte Mall.
