can my group be deleted and put on a new page?

can my group (soon to be a group) be deleted and put on a new page?

i misspelled discussion and juvenile on it or can they edit it?

can i delete my page myself?--tomer 10:38, 19 october 19 2008 (CTZ)

No need to delete it, just ask the sysops to move it, here -- boxy talkteh rulz 05:36 20 October 2008 (BST)

Weird problem with Historical Events section and my new guide

I just finished writing a guide, the other day, and hit submit, and for some reason, it's part of Catogory:Historical Events. I pinned down the problem to including a simple link to the catogory. I've removed the link, but any idea why a link is making it part of the catorgory? Linkthewindow Talk 13:54, 10 October 2008 (BST)

Editing my new group

I started a new group with my friends, and I was wondering if there is a guide for all the questions I have. like putting templates on to show we support sacred ground. Thanks in advance.Nequa 01:11, 4 September 2008 (BST)

Wiki Suggestions

Where's the appropriate place to make a suggestion for the Wiki, rather than the game? In the normal suggestions area, or is there a specific place that's better for these? Thanks. --Zhani 23:36, 27 August 2008 (BST)

Depends what the suggestion is. Talk:Main_Page might be appropriate if it is a broad technical effect or some such, although people often use User_talk:Kevan for that as well. If its a policy suggestion, UDWiki:Administration/Policy Discussion is the place you want. And obviously, there are pages for requesting various administrative actions. Thanks, I'll try Talk:Main_Page, possibly with a link from the relevant template as well. --Zhani 00:33, 28 August 2008 (BST)

Where are these templates?

I can't find the number of revives, number of kills etc. templates anywhere. Do they exist? And also is there a template where I can put in information about my character e.g. name, class, etc.? --Dr Frank 05:53, 6 June 2008 (BST)

The best place to go for templates is Category:Templates and Category:User Templates. The character template you refer to is Template:Character. If you have any more questions, just leave me a message. --ZsL 05:30, 23 June 2008 (BST)

Include Overloads?

I think External Military Report Map may be breaking because it makes to many inclusion calls (with curly brackets). However, NT Status Map makes as many just as calls without breaking. So what is the problem? SIM Core Map.png Swiers 21:14, 10 May 2008 (BST)

It's not number of inculusions but rather bits/bytes. It's a data size limit.--Karekmaps?! 04:40, 11 May 2008 (BST)

Possible to overlay the {DangerMap} with other info?

What was hoping to accomplish is creating an editable overlay for the DangerMap that would display the current location of my characters. This would both allow me to keep them separated to avoid tripping zerg flags and give me the entire DangerMap information as related to me at a glance.
I looked at how the DangerMap itself is constructed and I'm a little lost as to where I can start. I can see creating my own Map template and linking having each cell display the official DangerMap/suburb template... What would be really convenient is if I could have preferably one template for all characters or a template per character that would automatically update my Map with my character's new position without me having to change the actual map.
To expand, I'm hoping to have a character template where I just change a value or write the name of the new suburb my character is in and have the change take place on my map automatically.
Is this at all possible or am I dreaming? :P--  ZZ Argh.gifEmot-zombie.gif 20:45, 28 April 2008 (BST)

Yeah, its possible. What you want to do is use DIV's that use relative / absolute positioning to overlay one element on top of another. In this case, you'd maybe overlay a simple bit of text on top of the danger map. The danger map may not be the ideal tool for this, however, because its not set to any defined size. SIM Core Map.png Swiers 21:21, 28 April 2008 (BST)
I should expand: I would create a new map template for myself that would be fixed size and smaller than the current Danger Map. To accomplish this I'm hoping to strip out the suburb names and placing them into tooltips instead. I'll have to play around to see if a cell can be a link or if I'll have to figure out something else.
BTW, do you know if JavaScript is usable with the Wiki? Also, a div overlay seems like a good start if I can get it right and be able to "move" suburbs by adjusting the text position by a fixed value up/down/left/right. Do you or anyone else have any additional thoughts on what can be done? Would it be possible to display two templates in a cell if one tells how the cell is colored (DangerMap information) and the other one places text in the cell? Thank you once again!--  ZZ Argh.gifEmot-zombie.gif 22:18, 28 April 2008 (BST)
Javascript does NOT work on the wiki. And yes, you can easily have two templates affecting one table cell. All a template does is fill in some code / text. SIM Core Map.png Swiers 03:11, 29 April 2008 (BST)
After a good chunk of mindless work (100 suburbs to change!) I have a modified dangermap that I'm very happy with. It's done entirely in HTML and the neatest thing about it is that the name of each suburb pops up in a tooltip when you hover over a specific cell.
Tongue :PNow my task would be to somehow merge that map with information about my characters' location. I thought hard about it and I'm really drawing a blank. I'll try
positioning later today but I'm wondering if you or anyone else might have additional approaches I can try? Thanks!--  ZZ Argh.gifEmot-zombie.gif 19:30, 29 April 2008 (BST)
Another thing - would it be possible for people to create their own CSS sheets through MediaWiki?--  ZZ Argh.gifEmot-zombie.gif 23:41, 30 April 2008 (BST)

Help with Scenteral Intelligence Map/grid map

My experience using style tags is minimal, and I'm having some trouble figuring out how to gracefully handle placing one elements on top of another. My problems on the above page are twofold.
First, the grid image and names table that overlap the scent image table, while lined up properly, seem to be "displacing" elements below them by forcing them down the page. I re-positioned the later elements to move them up the page as well, but this still leaves a bunch of whitespace (1796px worth) at the end of the page. Is there any way to avoid this?
Secondly, the table that the grid image and suburbs name table overlay normally displays images which have their own tooltip tags. I want people to be able to see THOSE tooltips, not the ones for the topmost (z index wise) element. Is there any way to fix that? SIM Core Map.png Swiers 17:11, 23 April 2008 (BST)

Guide to changing sigs?

Looked everyone and in Special:Preferences as suggested by Wikipedia but can't find a place or guide on how to change my signature (add color and the like). A link on how to do this in the UD wiki would be must appreciated.--Zardoz 19:54, 21 April 2008 (BST)

You can find the information here. To change it you need to mark Raw Signatures in the User Profile section of My Preferences, Then in the box marked Nickname you add your link Zardoz and any code you wish to alter it with. To change the color you need to edit the section in red.--Karekmaps?! 21:00, 21 April 2008 (BST)

Headshot not permanent in monroeville

I just logged in to my monroeville account to see what's going on in monroeville, but with no intention to do anything since I had been headshot. It had displayed the whole knew to aim for the head message, so I was boned. So I scrolled through the radio chatter to find, of all things, a stand up button for only 10 AP. I clicked it, and it worked! I assure you that I was in central monroeville, and I hadn't logged in for about 2 weeks because I had been headshot.--The apprentice 23:14, 4 April 2008 (BST)

Small Animated GIFs

Here's something to debate. As we all know the recommended cap on images is 150KB. The purpose, other than keeping people from using up all the server's storage space, is to maintain a certain degree of wikipage loading standards on the UD Wiki. Larger images take longer to load and in the meantime their absence during this period is annoying. Now I recently worked on creating an animated GIF, with images scaled to 125x100px, each no larger than 10-13KB each. The effect required a long series of random images to flip past (.25 sec each), but after creating the animated GIF I realized that I had 50 images, and when tallied up that came to around 550+KB, well exceeding the recommended maximum file size. To correct the issue I removed some of the images, but the more images I removed lessened its overall effectiveness. In truth I would need to reduce it to 13-15 images in order to meet the recommended file size limit.

That said, unlike single large images animated GIFs load each individual image in an effect that appears to work similar to streamed video (in laymen's terms obviously). As such, it takes very little time to load a 10-13 KB image, and then move onto the next one in the sequence. With that in mind, would it be unacceptable to have such a large image file if it did in fact perform its function (albeit slowly at first)? Or do you all believe that it's an annoyance nonetheless? --Mobius187 20:09, 30 December 2007 (UTC)

I don't really see an issue. Its only a guideline, right? Animated gifs DO load thier initial frame quite quickly, and the guideline exists to steer people away from doing something stupid. It doesn;t cover all of good practice, or even avoid all bad practices. However, if you ARE going to use such a large image file, be sure to tag it with a text alternative (so people see something useful even if it hasn't load) and size attributes (so the browser can render the page properly if it hasn't loaded- this is STILL important with animated gifs, as its possible for later frames to be "oversize" compared to the originals, I think). Those two things will cover a LOT of problems.
Of course, it also matters where you plan to USE this image. If gets a lot of calls (as part of a high traffic page, used in a template, whatever) then its still a bad idea. SIM Core Map.png Swiers 23:28, 30 December 2007 (UTC)
The original intent for the image was to be used in a template, but as you mentioned that might be an unsound idea. Not that I believe the template will be all that popular, but there exists that potential, not to mention where users would opt to place the template. Again, considerable effort went into creating the animated image, so rather than lose that work I would instead prefer to reuse it in a non-template capacity. In this case as additional content on the NecroWatch wikipage (to which the image relates). Until I can find a good location for the image though I intend to hold off uploading it. On the topic of template images, when it comes to animated GIFs what is generally considered a common file size for them (as I have seen a few) or is it simply not recommended at all? --Mobius187 23:35, 30 December 2007 (UTC)

Slightly less random question

On the suggestion talk page Ive done something screwy and the templates come out all wrong. Any help fixing it? I have no idea whats up.--Rosslessness 14:29, 21 December 2007 (UTC)

Huh, What do you mean? You've gotta be more specific. It could be that the page needs cycling(I have been a little busy) or it may just be that you somehow screwed up the template inclusion.--Karekmaps?! 01:02, 22 December 2007 (UTC)

Random Question.

When I 'hover' over some squares it gives me there co-ords, but not others, even within the same location type. Is there a way to edit this?

Oh and on the suburb map of vinetown i was trying to mark a building vsb, but i cant get it ti allign in its little box properly. Hows that work. I have no idea what i'm doing.--Rosslessness 10:33, 16 December 2007 (UTC)

Can you give links to where this is happening (and not happening) please? -- boxy talki 11:29 16 December 2007 (BST)
Effort!. OK.--Rosslessness 12:19, 16 December 2007 (UTC)

Right i'm talking rubbish. I assumed wasteland and streets were treated in the same way. and theyre not. Wateland has coords, streets do not. The VSB question remains.--Rosslessness 12:22, 16 December 2007 (UTC)

That's because all wastelands have the same name... so we added the coordinates to differentiate them. And, the suburb map is not the place for marking building's barricade levels. Vinetown needs a barricade plan for that information -- boxy talki 12:32 16 December 2007 (BST)
Here is a code generator that automatically makes a plan for you to paste onto the barricade plan page, like these -- boxy talki 12:39 16 December 2007 (BST)

User Page Mess

My user page, User:Rhuster, has something wrong with the formating. I'm really not too good with HTML; could someone better take a look at it? All I want are small spaces between News Updates, and instead I get this jumbled thing...--Rhuster 13:35, 13 December 2007 (UTC)

I had a go at your user page Rhuster... main problem seemed to be the right alignment of the templates you were using. I also put a table in so that it limited the width of each separate template, regardless of how much you type into it (which is why some were narrower than others -- boxy talki 11:28 16 December 2007 (BST)

Gotcha. Thanks for the help! I appreciate it a lot.--Rhuster 11:33, 16 December 2007 (UTC)

Template Overload Update

When we get too many templates on a page, the templates no longer include themselves... nothing new in that. But I've just noticed that it now replaces them with a link to the page, which seems to work alright for User sig templates, located in their userspace... but not for actual template namespace templates. Category talk:Suggestions is where I noticed it. Seems to be a worse solution than the old one, where it just didn't include the template, but just displayed the wiki code for the template call.
It also includes the following text <!-- WARNING: template omitted, pre-expand include size too large -->
Does anyone know if this is something we can control? -- boxytalk • 13:26 9 November 2007 (BST)

There's practices to help avoid hitting the limit, wikipedia has more detail about those and background information about this problem. Also, in Kevan's talk archive there's a relevant conversation about the issue. A control-F search for "You may want" should bring it up. --Toejam 19:00, 9 November 2007 (UTC)
Yeah, I had a look around in Kevans talk page archives, but I did know there was a limit already, and it's necessary to stop mega-vandalism... it's just that the wiki seems to be handling it different than I remember. You used to be able to split the page up and archive stuff, and the templates would work again, but with the new system I believe it will permanently break them -- boxytalk • 07:08 10 November 2007 (BST)

Noteworthy suburbs

could someone answer a question for me? to quote the article on noteworthy suburbs it says "Suburbs listed in boldface contain notable locations, groups, or events." do we have any current noteworthy suburbs that are only noteworthy because of a group?--'BPTmz 03:05, 12 September 2007 (BST)

Well, the reasoning for each of the listed suburbs is here, so I suppose some of those suburbs are only noteworthy because of their group and the group's activities in that suburb. Personally I think the noteworthy suburbs thing is a little bit silly. --Toejam 16:02, 26 September 2007 (BST)
A few actually, the majority I would think are completely because certain groups reside there. Ridleybank is for the Ridleybank Resistance Front, Barhahville and Stanbury Village are partially on there for that too, except Stanbury Village also had Stanstock. Eastonwood is on there simply because of the Eastonwood Ferals, and Shearbank is there for DARIS. All the ones listed because of groups have frequently have/had events happening in them because of that groups residence. --Karekmaps?! 22:53, 26 September 2007 (BST)

Question on deletions

Sorry to place this here. But I cannot find a clear statement regarding deletions. When someone deletes postings that are not his own on a board (such as a suburb map and the posted information) I would consider that vandalism. I can understand counter posting to correct errors and the like. But deleting seems wrong. Still there is nothing in the policy to clearly state deletions would be a bad thing. I thought I would put this here first with no names, just so anything I may not clearly understand could be cleared up.--Wke235 03:53, 9 September 2007 (BST)

Hmm...try that suburb talk page. There's a high chance your post may have been moved to the talk page. By the way, I believe this goes on that wiki questions page. --•▬ ▬••▬ • •••• •▬ ▬•▬• ▬•▬ #nerftemplatedsigs 03:59, 9 September 2007 (BST)
Moved --The Grimch U! 11:16, 10 September 2007 (BST)
On this wiki, any action that is done with good intentions is not viewed as vandalism. So if someone deletes another editor's postings because they think there's a good reason to, then that wouldn't be vandalism, even if they were mistaken. Having said that, deletions are often a sensitive issue, and people shouldn't be reckless in what they remove. Deleting other people's comments is strongly discouraged unless there's a good reason. The exception is your own talk page, where you can delete whatever you want. --Toejam A Stats Graph 20:03, 10 September 2007 (BST)
And an example of "good reason" would be like some user posting "RRF=ZERGERS" (which they in no way do so...), and me coming along and deleting that useless comment. Just use common sense when deciding, it gets most people by.-- dǝǝɥs ɯɐds: sʎɐʍ1ɐ! 20:07, 10 September 2007 (BST)

Thanks in andvance. --XxPale HorsexX / XxCannon FodderxX 12:42, 27 August 2007 (BST)

 • To make images link to wiki pages you can use the Click template eg

 • Timestamps can be added directly by adding five tildes (~~~~~) to your signature, or if you go to my preferences (it's at the top-right of the screen) and in the User Profile tab you put your signature in the nickname field and save it, then the wiki will automatically add it after you signature each time you sign. (More info).
 • To make user text smaller, you can use <small>some small text</small> which appears as some small text, or <font size="-2">some more small text</font> which looks like some more small text. --  T   13:05, 27 August 2007 (BST)

You know, the one in parentheses? I was wondering, what does that signify? Also, why does my group page currently have (-982)? --D4rkness 06:55, 16 August 2007 (BST)

Actually, nevermind. I think I figured it out. It has to do with the number of characters added or subtracted from the page, right? Still, it seems something like that should be pointed out somewhere...--D4rkness 07:05, 16 August 2007 (BST)
Yep, it's the number of characters added to an article (well, strictly speaking it's the number of bytes), and a minus number means characters are taken away. Tracking Changes has more details about watchlists. --  T   07:20, 16 August 2007 (BST)

Cleaning up Pages / Archiving Old Information

I was just wondering what the rule(s) is/are for cleaning up extremely old notes on a page, or perhaps archiving the information. By cleaning up, I mean deleting, which from what I have seen is considered 'vandalism' on the site. The problem is, there is old information from 2006 with no relevance for the future (speaking specifically of the Shore Hills page). I think it would be okay in a "History" section or if was archived off the main page - but it is confusing for new people (particularly me).

A link or quote would be fantastic, I want to make sure that I'm not stepping on toes - rotted or live --Ryiis 22:54, 20 June 2007 (BST)

Mostly that stuff is archived as a sub-page to the one being cleaned up. The Shore Hills main page archive would be at Shore Hills/News Archive, and the talk page archive would be at Talk:Shore Hills/Archive -- boxy T L ZS Nuts2U DA 02:02, 21 June 2007 (BST)

--XxCannon FodderxX 14:44, 19 January 2008 (UTC)
No, there are not. Watchlist type pages that ANYBODY can view?

Is there any way to have a "watchlist" page that isn't tied to a specific account? I'd love to, for example, set up a "watchlist" that contains all the "User:NTstatus/Suburb" pages, so people can easily see when they are being updated. For one thing, it would let me take them all off my own personal watchlist, which is waayyyy to big at this point. I was thinking maybe this could be done via a "sock puppet" account, but that would require people to log into that account, which would be annoying for users and may result in misuse of the account. --Seb_Wiers VeM 13:30, 13 May 2007 (BST)

Related Changes sounds like it fits the bill. It's on the left hand side of the screen in the toolbox section. You use it on a wiki page and what it does is it shows you all the recent changes in the pages linked to from the original page. So if you make a page that links to all of the "User:NTstatus/Suburb" pages, then using related changes on that page should show you all the changes to the "User:NTstatus/Suburb" pages, like a watchlist with all the "NTstatus/Suburb" pages on it. Here's wikipedia's article about it. --Toejam 12:28, 14 May 2007 (BST)
Interesting. And it looks like you can create links directly to that special page as well, which would be nice to place on the map page and some other places. In fact, I just checked, and using the "related changes" on the "category:NT status map" page does exactly what I needed- and then some. Thanks! --Seb_Wiers VeM 13:15, 14 May 2007 (BST)

What Happened to My Signature?

As you can see in the section immediately below, I used to have a signature that was installed using a template. It no longer functions properly, although I have made no changes to my suer preferences or to the template. The template was called "Template:Swiers" - I can't even find this page now, or any record of it. Did the page get deleted, or am I making some really silly mistake that I can correct to get it working again? If it did get deleted, how can I figure out that is indeed the case, and recover it? --Swiers 12:24, 20 April 2007 (BST) 12:23, 20 April 2007 (BST) (< yup, pretty sad looking, isn't it?)

Criterian 10 is for "unused templates". It was hardly unused. Maybe it doesn't show up as in use because of the SUBST usage? In any case, now that I know it will still owrk, its easy enough to replace, and avoid having happen again per AH's comment below. --Swiers 23:24, 20 April 2007 (BST)

Non-Bold and Other Alternate Formating for Headers

On the NT Building Status List page, I made each entry a level 5 header so that they would show up in the table of contents. Is there some way to make all those level 5 headers NOT in bold text? Its the sort of thing a CSS would do handily; is there any equivalent for a wiki page?

Manipulating the Table of Contents

Hey there. How do you like UD coverage? I hope the Malton Gazette to be awesome. Haven't started advertising as of now, but please take a look and tell me what you think (or if you can write!)--I'm trying here. My question is with the TOC; I thought I had a brilliant scheme for formatting my paper, and eventually used HTML to do away with those wiki headers. Now my TOC is gone. Is there a way to be able to include sections (i.e. Headlines, Competitions, Features, Classifieds, Masthead) in the/a table of contents without putting up a list or making them into wiki headers, and how? Thanks. --Thegreathal 02:31, 13 April 2007 (BST)

Well, considering the TOC is made to use wiki headers and such, I don't think so. You might be able to manually create some sort of TOC yourself, but that's about as much as I can help you. I think you pretty much have to use wiki formatting if you want an automatic TOC. --V2Blast TP!CSR 15:24, 20 August 2007 (BST)

"Watching" an entire category (100 pages)

Is there some way to watche every page within a category? The NT Status Map uses 100 sub-pages to allow individual updates to each suburbs information on the map (similar to the suburb maps danger level system) and I;d like to know when they are updated, but didn't "watch" all of the relevant pages, and dread opening all 100 again. Is there some other way I can know about it whenever a page in the Category:NT status map area gets modified, or something similar? --S.Wiers X:00x-mas tree dead pool 21:31, 17 March 2007 (UTC)

Sorry, watching a Category only will alert you to when the text on category page is changed not when new things are added to the category. You will have to select each page you want to watch on its own in order to keep track of every change. Vantar 01:55, 18 March 2007 (UTC)
I was aware what watching a category did (and does not) accomplish, I'm just surprised there's not some further way to more easily watch every page that is in a category. Bummer. Well, I think I caught 95% or more of them, good enough to get a nice idea of how frequently the thing is being updated anyhow. --S.Wiers X:00x-mas tree dead pool 03:00, 18 March 2007 (UTC)

Transferably Usable Skills

I made two pages

that I would like to merge into one.

My problem and question is that I don't know what I should call it, and so what should I call it?

Now, the topic is really which zombie skills are useful or usable as a survivor and which items and survivor skills are useful or usable as a zombie as well as which you would be advised to get to be as good as you can be. Now a short and concise but precise name is needed, of which I can't think of one.

I feel that there is a need of such an article, as most players try to get all of the skills that they can do, and this will help them to see what's best for them from the other side.

As well as this, quite a few articles go into this topic while only exploring their own part of it - a list of all that I could find is this:

 • Category:Skills - Two notes under ' Completing the Skill Tree' - the current most comprehensive article for this topic
 • Zombie Skills - Under Human Skills useful to Zombies discusses the survivor skills for zombies and also the Flak Jacket, dismissing other items (probably good for this place, but not for a comprehensive analysis)
 • Talk:Zombie Skills also has a section Zombie Skills, Do they cross Over? which is useful
 • Melee Weapons - Crowbar has a vague mention of zombie usage against barricades, and beneath this, Baseball Bat and Length of Pipe it discusses in limited detail their usage for zombies as weapons.
 • Useful Items - Benefits to zombies mentioned under Flak Jacket, and unclearly for Mobile Phones, zombie use of Radios and lack of it for GPS is not mentioned at all.

Now all of these should reference this article, and possibly be entirely replaced by such a link.

I think that the two articles that I made should be entirely deleted, rather than just redirecting, as the names aren't probably going to be used for searching by ordinary people, and they are flawed themselves anyway. I've also put links here from their talk pages, and also in Category talk:Skills#Cross Death Boundary Skills.

If the merge is done, then I think that the talk page stuff should be transferred, with the stuff on bold being put onto the article main. Of course, if I get a name then I'd be more than happy to do all of this myself.

Thanks for reading this and any suggestions will be really truly appreciated. Thanks --xensyriaT 15:48, 4 March 2007 (UTC)

Thats not really a question and this is not really the best place for suggesting an idea, if your looking for other's people thoughts on it you'll have better luck on the Community Portal talk page, but since it here. I think the best place for this information would be on the Zombie page, the article already mentions the Body Building skill usefulness to zombies under the Tactical Overview subsection so you might be able to add to that with information about the usability of items and other usable human skills I can't see this information becoming much more than a paragraph. Putting a Heading in a Table

I want to have something like this:

== News Flash XXXX_XXXX ==

That is, I want the heading to actually be inside the table. I can not get this to work, no matter where I put my =='s. If I put them outside the table, the table breaks, if inside they display as literals. Is this possible?--SporeSore 14:49, 14 February 2007 (UTC)

News Flash XXXX_XXXX

and then make a table with the template in it Vantar 20:49, 4 March 2007 (UTC)

Project Wonderful Breaking The Wiki AGAIN

The 'project wonderful' (aptly named for the irony-mongers) ad is breaking the wiki again, in Firefox at least. Because it won't download quickly (it takes approx. 1 minute), it makes the browser look as if it hasn't completed the page download. Can't they make their ad a little bit smaller? Or their server a little bit more efficient? --Funt Solo Scotland flag.JPG 09:39, 30 January 2007 (UTC)

Are you running Firefox 1.5.X or Firefox 2.0.X because I have have never noticed that problem while I have been running Firefox. Kevan as already set the ads to load a fast a Project Wonderful allows (a size of 117 px x 30px with no animations) so it is unlikely that the ads will change to be smaller, as for plans for Project Wonderful to run more efficiently you would have to ask them about it. Vantar 22:42, 30 January 2007 (UTC)
Aye, I run Firefox. It must be a server issue - and on their side as well - there's no slowdown of any of the wiki images loading. It's okay right now, so I guess this is just something that comes and goes with the ebb and flow of their traffic. --Funt Solo Scotland flag.JPG 17:43, 1 February 2007 (UTC)

Expected XP value page

I'd like to compile a page with the expected XP value of various activities, based on the amount of AP you put into them. As an easy example, every AP you spend to attack a zombie as a newborn firefighter gives you on average 3/4ths of an experience point - however, when dealing with items like first aid kits and pistols, things become somewhat more difficult to calculate as you need to spend time foraging for supplies. In any case, the problem shouldn't be completely intractable. Should I just go ahead and start the page, or is there one like it already that I've missed? And if there isn't, is there some other reason not to have one? It seems sort of strange that no one else has started something like this. Enziet 03:52, 26 January 2007 (UTC)

I've looked a little deeper in to this problem and found that there is a very unused Suggestions category, so unless someone can give me a reason not to, I plan on adding a few subcategories such as undecided and rejected to Category:Suggestions and then apply this category throughout the Suggestions/* monstrosity. Vantar 10:58, 21 January 2007 (UTC)
Good idea- it looks like you've already worked on that, no? Take a look at Talk:Suggestions#Make_Suggestions_Their_Own_Pages - you can vote on the issue, and check out links to related ideas / discussion / categories. Notably, category: suggestion would be for suggestions currently undergoing discussion / voting. I'd love for somebody to set up a new system so we don't keep dumping stuff down the same hard-to-manage path, and would be happy to help as much as I can. I'd already considered doing some work on it, but my attempts seem to elicit negative reactions. --S.Wiers X:00 22:12, 10 February 2007 (UTC)

I was wondering does a survivor journal have to be a diary entry written in the first person eg "dear diary today i woke up drank a beer and killed a zombie" or can it be a story about an event or something else.-- Emoch Noh 2 17:37, 26 april 2006 (GMT)

Journals are pretty much just an all encompassing term for Urban Dead fanfics, so feel free to write it in whatever style you want. – Nubis NWO 17:46, 26 April 2006 (BST)

My journal is getting a bit big, and I'm thinking about archiving it and denoting the archive with a user-made template. But I'm not exactly sure how I should do this: Would just creating a new page be okay to do, and link to that from my Journal in a particular area? Or should I try something else? --MorthBabid 23:52, 3 May 2006 (BST)

Archiving it like you would a user talk page is probably your best bet. In this case Journal:MorthBabid/Archive would probably be the page to make. – Nubis NWO 23:55, 3 May 2006 (BST)

Group's Images

I'm creating a new group and i was wondering how do you change the image in the group box? Also, how do you get your group in the "Groups" area? (not stats page). --RWXSM 18:25, 19 March 2006 (GMT)

Groups usually upload images to the wiki. The image can be usually be changed by referencing the uploaded file (like ). --Lint 08:31, 23 March 2006 (GMT)

This isn't really helpful. Give us some more advice? —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Solid Core (talkcontribs) 21:01, January 28, 2008.

The instructions for the groupbox are here. To put an image in there, upload an image to the wiki (or find one already here) and copy the pagename. It will be in the format Image:Picture.jpg. Paste that pagename into the group_image section of the groupbox template on your page -- boxy talki 02:11 29 January 2008 (BST)

Group page in general

I'm editing my group page, and was wondering how do i get it to register in the directory of survivor groups, as well as how to place an image on there, and how to place an in-site table of contents thing (the box of inward links on the top left). --Shriveled ostrich

The table of contents usually automatically appears after you use several headers (==Like this==, ===And this===). If you don't have enough headers to make it automatically appear, you can force it to appear by placing __TOC__ somewhere on your page. --Lint 08:31, 23 March 2006 (GMT)

I have done everything u said there, but it still wont put my group onto the group page. why??—The preceding unsigned comment was added by PvtStanwell (talkcontribs) at an unknown time.

Miscellaneous

I was wondering, can some one tell me how to change the status symbol at the top of the page for a mall? (I.E Giddings Mall's page says it has been ransacked, yet there are 300 survivors inside)KingdomsSword 19:00, 07 July 2008 (PST)

To update Gidding Mall's status, go to the page Giddings Mall, and near the top right of the page there should be a link labeled '(update)'. If you click it, it will take you to User:DangerReport/Giddings_Mall (Who's not actually a real user.) There's instructions there about the different possible statuses like safe, under attack etc. Decide which status best describes the current situation in Giddings Mall, then click 'edit' at the top of the page. There'll be a section that looks something like this:
status=ransacked
comment=There were 50 zombies in one corner of the mall, which was ruined.
user=DaveBF 21:08, 7 July 2008 (BST)
The text on the right of the equals sign might be different, that's perfectly fine.
Now, where it says 'ransacked' replace it with the new status that you've picked, and in the comment section replace the old comment with a new comment briefly describing the state of the mall. Then add your signature over the old one. Finally, click save, and it's done! Hope this helps. --Toejam 06:25, 8 July 2008 (BST)

How can I get in touch with someone who can answer my questions regarding PayPal donations and exemptions from the 160 hit per ISP law? ----GrayGhost 02:50, 10 Jan 2006 (GMT)

(NOTE: This is the inappropriate section for this question. If this answer is helpful, perhaps move this whole bit to the FAQ.)
The donation policy is clearly stated at www.urbandead.com/donate.html.
-You can Only donate through PayPal, or via purchasing Kevan something from his Amazon Wishlist.
-Every $5 one donates through either method allows the donor to exempt 1 character from the 160 hit limit. The character is declared as part of the donation form.
-If too many characters are declared, the highest on the list are always processed first, ignoring any others.
-Exemptions do not expire.
-Exemptions can never be moved between characters.
(The following points of the policy are unclear and should be changed if they are inaccurate)
-The donation amount is measured in US Dollars(USD).
-Donations are always rounded down to the nearest 5 dollars for character-exemption purposes.
-No actions taken with an exempted character count against an IPs 160 hit limit. (This should be verified by someone with an exempted character.)
It is recommended that you do not try to contact Kevan directly, he recieves a great deal of email. If you had a large donation or an especially important issue that none of the other players can answer, you may find a way to contact him on his website kevan.org.

On Recruitment, there are instructions on how to add an advert for your own group at the top of the page. In summary: write a little bit about your group, then find the section on the page which is appropriate for your group (Human group/zombie group/Pker group etc), and finally, add the description of your group to that section, which is in alphabetical order. It's probably clearest if you take a look at how the other groups have done it and use them as an example. --Toejam 18:17, 26 March 2007 (BST)

Linking Through Images

How do I display an image and have it link back to my user page?--_Vic D'Amato__Dead vs Blue_ 06:48, 6 December 2006 (UTC)

Say the image is called BigZombie.png. Firstly, (the order is important), go to http://wiki.urbandead.com/index.php/Image:BigZombie.png and write #Redirect User:Blue_Command_Vic, and save it. Next, click on the upload it link and try to upload the file. You should get a warning message saying that a file with this name exists already. Ignore it, and save the file anyway. Now if you follow the link to Image:BigZombie.png, it should redirect to your user page, and if you ever put the image onto a page (use ) it too should link back to your user page. --Toejam 05:30, 13 December 2006 (UTC)

Template for each line e.g. |
} to finish.
Hope this helps, Jonny12 Talk 23:41, 24 December 2006 (UTC)

Oh yeah, sorry about that. I think you use |- for a new row. So it would look like this:

Template
Template
Template
etc...

Does this work? Jonny12 Talk 12:20, 29 December 2006 (UTC)

Is there a magic word for this?

I am just getting into creating wiki pages but I've noticed that when ever I go to a subpage of one of my pages, say for example User:Logan_Ash/Activity it will show a small link at the top of the page saying this: < User:Logan Ash. How can I get rid of this link, as it bumps my pages down a notch, which in my opinion messes up my layout.

Sorry, but AFAIK it can't be done, as this is an automatic feature of the MediaWiki software. I'm open to being corrected, however. —Revenant talk 17:26, 11 June 2007 (BST)
I know it is down on group pages, like Metal Fox and Philosophe Knights, but I am begining to think it is a built in feature of the User Pages. ~ Logan Ash ~ Logan's BadgeMetal FoxLogan's Talk 18:36, 11 June 2007 (BST)

User scripts?

Most of my wiki experience comes from Wikipedia. Over there I have access to some very useful scripts which help with tasks such as reverting vandalism. These scripts should be able to operate on any MediaWiki installation. However, when I tried importing one via the normal method (change skin to MonoBook, add relevant code to monobook.js), it doesn't appear to be loading.

So I checked the FAQ for the one I use the most, which had this as its key point:

I'm guessing this is disabled, since that appears to be the default setting. Is it possible for it to be enabled? I was going to post on Kevan's talk page, but it said to post here about wiki-related questions. So... over to you! —Revenant talk 17:25, 11 June 2007 (BST)

Yep, I think this probably is disabled. I messed around with it, trying more or less the same code here and on the wikimedia wiki and the result was that nothing happened here and something happened there, so it's likely just not turned on. --Toejam 02:06, 14 June 2007 (BST)
I was wondering what you were trying to do with those two pages. How do these scripts make reverting vandalism easier? -- boxy T L ZS Nuts2U DA 02:55, 14 June 2007 (BST)
The tool I use most is called Navigation popups, and as the description says, it "offers easy access to article previews and several Wikipedia functions in popup windows which appear when you hover the mouse over links." So, for example, I can mouseover a diff link in a page history, see that somebody added a reference to an implausible feature of their anatomy, and revert it from there. Much less clicking, much less page loading, automatic edit summaries... very useful. And it's especially easy to get used to being able to see where a link is leading you – sometimes I don't even have to view the target page, because I can get the gist form the popup. See the link for more details on how this one works. —Revenant talk 14:06, 14 June 2007 (BST)

Removing old suggestions on developing suggestions page

I was wondering if it was ok to remove real old suggestions that just take up room on the suggestions page if they haven't been removed yet or to put them into an archieve. If we need to archieve them plese give a link to the archeive page. --El Rose 18:40 23 August 2007

Yeah it's fine, if there's no new comments for more than 5 days or so, then delete 'em (or write a message by the top of the suggestion saying that it'll be deleted soon, and then delete it in a few days). There's no archiving anymore (there used to be, but it was a lot of work for little value, so we stopped archiving and started deleting. Much easier.) --  T   11:10, 24 August 2007 (BST)

It's best to have the link outside of the edit /* */ because links in it screw up the arrow(even if the header is a link). If you put it after it has a link to what you want, if you want to link the section you just edited it already does that(clicking the arrow). Very annoying, best to not put links as headers until media wiki decides to fix that, if ever. It's not really an issue if the link is to the header that you were editing, like what you did on the suggestions page.--Karekmaps?! 23:57, 25 September 2007 (BST)

Advanced Template usage help needed

End goal: An addition to Template:Suburb that displays the current status of the listed MalTel mast in a nice text format. So far: I have created Template:MalTelMastStatusText and several subpages following the model of Template:MalTelSuburbStatus_active and so on. I was unable to get a single-page conditional working correctly, because it wouldn't nicely parse 5 {{{{{ in a row. I'm guessing this version of MediaWiki doesn't support it, while the one at Wikipedia does? {{ {} |active=Active}} etc wouldn't work for me, just resulting in Template:Active. I couldn't use the parser functions described on Wikipedia either, like #ifeq. Anyway, what I have so far works nicely if I know the name of the tower whose status I need, for example here's Smith_Towers: Template:MalTelMastStatusText inactive . Let me know if I totally went about this the wrong way, or if I could have got conditionals working without a dozen subpages.

The problem: I want to incorporate this into the Template:Suburb template as said.

How do I determine the building name, from the Suburb name, which I know ( {Suburb} )? Well, my first thought is to work from the list on Template:NewMalTelAlpha. I could create a new page that associates a suburb parameter with a particular tower name. I can do a search & replace to format the list as needed, so no real worry about labor intensiveness. The problem is syntax or if this is even possible. The end result I'm anticipating is something along the lines of {{MalTelStatus|suburb={Suburb} }} then T:MalTelStatus gets the tower name for {Suburb} and returns MalTelStatusText for that tower's current condition.

I'm just not sure how to go about doing that.

Help much appreciated. --Zhani 06:55, 28 August 2008 (BST)
