The Malton Forensics Unit has a structured chain of command. The hierarchical organization is designed for efficiency and clarity. Department personnel are spread out throughout the city, and one of their greatest strengths are the organizational abilities and dedication to helping each other, as well as the citizens of Malton! As such, although all members are expected to work within the chain of command and follow the guidelines and policies put forth by their superiors, they are also strongly encouraged to communicate and work with each other to meet local needs to the best of their abilities. MFU officers are encouraged to communicate and work with any local organizations whose goals are congruent with DEM and MFU policy - saving lives, and providing revivification to fallen survivors.

Department Organization

The Chief of Forensics is in charge of all MFU operations throughout Malton. The city is divided up in a grid-work pattern of suburbs, organized into four quadrants known as Divisions. A Head Coroner commands MFU operations over an entire division. Each division is broken up into 5 Districts, which consist of 5 suburb blocks (see diagrams below). Within each of these districts, a Coroner is appointed to relay orders to lower ranking officers. Each district is comprised of 5 Suburbs, each of which is presided over by a Pathologist. Toxicologists and Lab Technicians are under a Pathologist's authority.

In summary, the chain of command is:

MFU Ranks.png MFU Ranks-simple.png

Command Personnel

Chief of Forensics

The Chief of Forensics (CoF) is in charge of MFU policy and personnel for the entire city.

  • The Chief of Forensics shall have a minimum of 20 levels of training with the MFU.
  • The Chief of Forensics shall appoint a Head Coroner for each of the four divisions.
  • The Chief of Forensics shall monitor and approve new applications for employment with the MFU and make appropriate roster entries upon approval.
    • S/he may delegate these duties to a Head Coroner as needed.

The current Chief of Forensics is Thomas "Tom" Chardon.

The Chief of Forensics is a member of the DEM Council.

Head Coroner

The Head Coroner (HC) is in charge of one division, and appoints and commands the five Coroners in their division.

  • Head Coroners shall have a minimum of 12 levels of training with the MFU.
  • Head Coroners shall monitor their division's Academy campus graduation thread and assign new MFU graduates to a district command.
  • Head Coroners shall be responsible for maintaining their division's entry information on official rosters and on this page.
  • If one or more districts within a division have no Coroner, the Head Coroner shall clarify the district's chain of command for any officers or line personnel in that district, either by designating a team leader or mission commander or by accepting direct reports from Pathologists and Toxicologists in that district.

Head Coroners have access to the Regional Command forum and the MFU Officers' forum. Head Coroners are DEM Councilours.

Head Coroners report to the Chief of Forensics.

Coroner

The Coroner (CO) is in charge of one district, and commands the Pathologists in it.

  • Coroners shall have a minimum of 12 levels of training with the MFU.
  • Coroners shall organize the Pathologists, Toxicologists, and Lab Technicians within their District.
  • Coroners may appoint a Pathologist for each suburb under their command, to the extent that current staffing allows.
  • If one or more suburbs within a district have no Pathologist, the Coroner shall clarify the suburb's chain of command for any officers or line personnel in that suburb, either by designating a team or operation leader or by accepting direct reports from Toxicologists and Lab Technicians in that suburb.

Coroners have access to the Regional Command forum and the MFU Officers' forum.

Coroners report to their division's Head Coroner.

Officers

Pathologist

The Pathologist (PTH) is in charge of one suburb or mobile team, and commands any MFU personnel in it.

  • Pathologists shall have at minimum 6 levels of training with the MFU.
  • Pathologists shall be responsible for establishing order and accountability in their suburb.
  • Pathologists are given latitude in organizing the Toxicologists and Lab Technicians within their suburb.

Pathologists have access to the MFU Officers' forum.

Pathologists report to their district's Coroner, or to their division's Head Coroner if the district has no Coroner assigned.

Toxicologist

The Toxicologist (TOX) is nominally in charge of one NecroTech building, though strict assignment to a single NT rarely occurs. Cadets can in rare cases reach this rank by passing with honours from The Academy.

  • Although Toxicologist is an officer grade, Toxicologists and Lab Technicians are both of equal rank. Toxicologists have seniority and different duties, but ordinarily do not issue orders to Lab Technicians. Possible exceptions to this rule:
    • In the Pathologist's absence, s/he may designate a Toxicologist to serve as acting Pathologist.
    • The Pathologist may designate a Toxicologist to be the command officer at a well-staffed revive point or NecroTech building.
    • The Pathologist, or the Coroner or Head Coroner, may designate a Toxicologist to serve as a team leader or mission commander.

Toxicologists have access to the MFU Officers' forum.

Toxicologists report to their suburb's Pathologist, or to their district's Coroner or division's Head Coroner if the suburb has no Pathologist assigned.

Line Personnel

Researcher

The Researcher (RSR) is a command officer who has retired from full-time active duty but remains a member of the MFU by request.

  • Researchers are typically not assigned to a specific district or suburb, but may attach themselves to a district or suburb crew on a temporary or semi-permanent basis.
  • Semi-active Researchers may or may not be included on divisional rosters, at the option of the Researcher and/or the command officer maintaining the roster.
  • Researchers are exempt from reporting requirements.
  • Researchers retain the forum access they had at the time of retirement.

As a general rule, the rank of Researcher is only available to officers retiring from the rank of Coroner or above; however, rare exceptions may be made on a case-by-case basis for retiring Pathologists or Toxicologists of long service who request to remain on the roster after leaving full-time active duty.

Researchers may return to full-time active duty upon request filed with the Head Coroner of the division in which the Researcher wishes to be assigned. Because they retain their forum access, Researchers need not file a formal reinstatement request in the Returning Members thread. Upon reinstatement, the Researcher shall be commissioned at one rank below that from which the Researcher retired, or any rank below that at the Researcher's option (e.g., a Researcher who retired as a Head Coroner may reinstate as a Coroner, or may choose to return as a Pathologist or Toxicologist instead).

Researchers retiring from the position of Chief of Forensics retain access to the DEM Council forum. They may participate in Council discussions but do not have the ability to vote.

Lab Technician

The Lab Technician (LBT) is the entry-level rank in the MFU.

Lab Technicians report to their suburb's Pathologist, or to their district's Coroner or division's Head Coroner if the suburb has no Pathologist assigned.
