=== DangerReport pages for MalTel masts and BuildingStatus template: would this break anything? === | === DangerReport pages for MalTel masts and BuildingStatus template: would this break anything? ===
Looking at the DangerReport page for a MalTel mast shows the standard BuildingStatus template, NOT the BuildingStatusMalTel template which shows the generator status along with the building status. Would it break anything to change all of the DangerReport/MastBuildingName pages to use BuildingStatusMalTel instead of BuildingStatus? Is this something we could get a bot to do? --[[User:Zhani|Zhani]] 19:39, 29 August 2008 (BST) | Looking at the DangerReport page for a MalTel mast shows the standard BuildingStatus template, NOT the BuildingStatusMalTel template which shows the generator status along with the building status. ===Advertising an event?===
If I wanted to advertise an event I am planning, do I just use the page I created or is any other place I could advertise it? Sorry if the question is confusing. --[[User:Mindlessidiots|Mindlessidiots]] 22:59, 24 August 2010 (BST)
:If it's an advertisement for an event you seek, you can post it [[Template:Community Projects|here]]. Also, I'm very happy to [[User talk:Axe Hack/Sig|advertise anything in my signature]]. Kinda worth your while too, since my signature is on the most pages in this wiki... >< --{{User:Axe Hack/Sig}} 23:24, 24 August 2010 (BST)

===Templates and server load?===
Could anyone explain to me the relation between template use and server load? Is just the fact that they require the movement/copying of data from one page to another? I've seen a template (ironically) disparaging the use of templated signatures as they increase server load; is this actually a significant problem? --{{User:AClashInRedSnow/sig}} 21:49, 23 December 2008 (UTC)
:I'm by no means an expert, but I've read that the server load increase is insignificant, if any. The main objection is that they are prime targets for vandalism (once the whole [[Developing Suggestions]] was posted in someone's sig,) and the server load one. {{User:Linkthewindow/Sig}} 22:55, 23 December 2008 (UTC)
===Template parameters===
Does anyone know if there's a way to change the output of template parameters so that if "location_type=police dept" is entered it can display "police department" in the category section of [[Template:Locationblock]]? It's also needed for Necrotech buildings, libraries, cemeteries. If I can't figure out a way to do this, I'll probably have to rollback to the old system <small>-- [[User:Boxy|<span style="color: Red">boxy</span>]] [[User talk:Boxy|<span style="color: Red">talk</span>]] • [[The Rules|teh rulz]] 11:42 30 December 2008 (BST)</small>
:If you create a template in the format [[Template:Info_X]], and then input the last word into the "location_type" parameter when using the template, then it will work, as shown [[User:Rorybob/sandpizzle#Locationblock testing|here]]. (To make it so that a category is given to the page, use <nowiki><includeonly></nowiki> tags and put in [[:Category:Police Departments]], for example.) {{User:Rorybob/Sig}}21:06, 4 November 2009 (UTC)

===Time Travel?=== | |||
Ok, something is seriously up with the timekeeping all of a sudden for me. I was happily reviewing my bot and checking the odd edit to make sure it hadn't broken anything. My refresh of RC yielded no new results though. Fearing it had crashed I checked my program, it was still trodding along happily. I pasted a page to check the edit history. It had updated just fine and at the current time.
Looking closer at RC, it's fucking jumped a hour off and fucked the edit history over.
My bot was working in alphabetical order, and the mass of edits certainly helps me a bit here...
This question started at 23:45 UTC and posted at 23:58 UTC.
Recent Changes, top of list, show bots on.

A ton more bot edits here, you get the idea.

All these times, and notice the usual edits too, have suddenly jumped an hour into the future!
The bots edits were being made at the correct UTC time though, and had gotten stuck deeper into the stack, inamongst edits that had been made an hour previous (the edits from an hour before have now jumped an hour ahead, remember)
See how the alphabetical order has continued! Louis Hospital to Luke Cathedral. The non-bot edits I believe were made from the hour ago streak. Thus the edits are getting interwoven.

So...WTF? | |||
If there's some edits during actual UTC 00:20 to 00:24, they should intersperse with an unbroken bot edit streak. If anybody else is getting this error, you could turn turing on bot edits in RC and seeing the result.
For the record, this is the streak as of now, currently just far enough into the future to be undisturbed.

===Template Creation===
People appear to use templates for creating awards/badges for all manner of things and I was wondering if there are any rules outlying their creation? I've considered creating my own several times for different purposes (mostly fun) and I want to know if there any requirements I need to fulfil? [[:Category:Templates]] and [[Help:Templates]] have told me how to make one but not if I'm allowed to.

:Sure, [[A/VB]]. No one is allowed to vote multiple times with different accounts. And teaming up on someone with alt user accounts can be viewed as bad faith as well. :::::That can easily get around the system, yes. Truth be told, we rarely rule that two accounts are the same unless we have some very substantial evidence that they are run by the same person, ie. ip addresses. Using an account from school can cause "damage", though it's easily reversible and the vandal alt will get warned (most likely banned if they trip up any suspicion/evidence it's an alt). Despite this, yes, it will in most cases avoid the actual blame coming down onto the real culprit's main account in the end. -- {{User:DanceDanceRevolution/sig3}} 15:24, 28 July 2010 (BST)
===Table spacing=== | |||
I can't find or figure out how to make a dead space between rows in a table. I would like to put just a blank line or two between my characters on my user page, ideally without resorting to using empty cells. Is this possible, if so, how? Thanks. [[User:Captdrett|Captdrett]] 22:51, 18 December 2009 (UTC)
:I'd suggest making each one its own table, then putting some line breaks between the tables. Otherwise, inserting an empty row really is your best bet. You could also try to use [[Help:Tables#Cell_Spacing_and_Padding|cell spacing]], but I don't think it'd achieve the results you want. {{User:Aichon/Signature}} 23:13, 18 December 2009 (UTC)
=== Wasnt sure where to put this...but how do I advertise? ===
And is it acceptable to advertise in certain ways but not others? I'm trying to make a Survivor Mall Tour but noone knows about it. I dont wanna bug its just that survivors probably "need" this: something fun to do that gives an excuse to repair areas and kill a ton of zombies efficiently. Right now everyone is just in their own lil' groups, not helping each other out exactly.
So how do I advertise? Any free ways? And so on...--[[User:Supercohboy|Supercohboy]] 19:48, 7 January 2010 (UTC)

::Also, groups are helping each other out. My survivor group (40-50 active members) is currently out of their home suburb, helping another group/suburb get back on its feet. But yes, as Yonnua said, post on the Recruitment page. {{User:Aichon/Signature}} 02:32, 8 January 2010 (UTC)
Okay, thanks! Also, I just knew saying that would offend someone eventually, and I know there are groups out there that are helping each other, but I meant in the big picture there are more zombies working together and making a bunch of targeted events then we are, and it is messing up Malton*! ===Images as direct links===
I've seen, on a few different wikis, coding allowing images to be used as direct links to other pages - not like the redirects we tend to use here (such as with Iscariot's sig, for a prominent example). Examples of this can be see with the sprites [http://bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/Elite_Four#Generation_I_and_III here], or with the flag images [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_War_II in the infobox here]. Now, I'm not a huge fan of redirects, and if it were possible to set up something like that here, I'd make use of it, but having viewed what source code I have, I'm not entirely sure I understand it. From what I can gather, the first example runs from a standardised image archive, the likes of which we don't have, while the source code for wikipedia's example seems similarly tied to a small subset of images. Basically, is there a way to do this kind of thing in a manner which allows any image on the wiki to be used as a direct page link? {{User:Misanthropy/Sig}} 22:47, 28 February 2010 (UTC)
:Pretty sure I've seen this before, but it might be that the mediawiki isn't good enough to sustain it. I had a fiddle, but I couldn't see an easy way of doing it. --{{User:Yonnua Koponen/signature}} 23:24, 28 February 2010 (UTC)
:Well, after checking out the template calls on WWII flag image template, [http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Template:Flagicon&action=edit], I didn't go further than that page I just linked cause I'm concentrating on a lecture atm, but judging by the code it's most like a div template hovering over the image that links straight to the page, so you can't actually click the flag cause it's hiding behind the transparent template of the same size. I believe Rooster (it might have been AHLG and Iscariot too) spent a bit of time in 2009 messing with the concept. --{{User:DanceDanceRevolution/sig3}} 23:39, 28 February 2010 (UTC)

::::As shown on [[User:Iscariot/WIP18|this test]] (banner at the top), even when putting in larger values I couldn't get the link area to sustain beyond a certain limit. It might work for sigs, but I'd do some serious beta testing first, that example was for Bob, but I don't recall him ever using it so it's never been put into the wilds to interact with page code and other people's sigs. -- {{User:Iscariot/Signature}} 00:02, 1 March 2010 (UTC)
For those following at home, [[User:Iscariot/WIP17|this page]] now contains last year's tests, combined with a proof of concept and a rendered sig using this method. My only real concern with this is the increase in template calls within the templated sig. It might be possible to use raw code as a replacement for the click template, but I just can't be bothered at this time of night. This concept will also need testing regarding its interactions with other common coding on talk pages and in sigs before I'm happy for them to go into the wild. Comments? -- {{User:Iscariot/Signature}} 00:50, 1 March 2010 (UTC)

::Update the second, Mis and I just tried the multi-templated version in my sig. The template calls didn't cause page breakage, however we found that the sig would automatically rejustify itself on a new line, away from indented comments and that it would displace the timestamp as well. :::It's never going to work like that, other wikis use some sort of extension for signature images like that. --{{User:A Helpful Little Gnome/Sig}} 04:18, 1 March 2010 (UTC)
Okay, I'm sick and heading to bed in a sec, so you'll have to excuse the fact that I just skimmed what you all said, but I can think of two possible ways to rig this up by using the technique that was described earlier (covering the image with a link).
#Set the image you want as the background image for a div. After that, create a link in the div with span around it that has display:block set for it and its width and height matching the size of the div. You can see an example of how to create a link with span in that manner [[User:Aichon/Sandbox/Archive_2009#For_Rorybob|here]] (mouse over Dakerstown on the map).
#If you can't set wiki images as background images (I honestly can't remember if it's possible at the moment), then do the same thing with the link as what I said for #1, but make sure its first in the code, with position:relative, float:left, and a z-layer that is higher than that of the image. Then, just have the image in the div like normal after that. Assuming my brain isn't horribly addled (and it might be), the image should just float under the link, meaning it'll work as desired.
If neither of those work, or nobody can get them working, I'll see if I can find some time in the next few days to put something together, but it should be possible. All of the other things I saw mentioned here seem to require additional extensions (but again, I only skimmed). Hope this helps. And now, to bed... {{User:Aichon/Signature}} 07:03, 1 March 2010 (UTC)
:We can't set background images. Mediawiki itself is coded to remove the image code as it's a "security threat" (I think it's something about external images executing arbitrary code, but don't quote me on that. I don't get why you couldn't use local ones either). You put the code down, and the parser will silently remove the whole lot. The only thing that makes it when setting a ''background'' definition is the ''background-color'' attribute.
:So the other, working, option is just laying a big div on top. You then have to set a link up using spaces to fill the box. Unfortunately Click doesn't take the best route to it. It's uses a 100px font size and 3 non-breaking spaces to set up the link. 3 nbsp's aren't even 100px wide, and only 100px tall because of the font-size. So anything bigger than that and you won't get it covering the whole area.
:I think I can make it less fail and create a new version once I post this, but I'd still recommend image redirects for signatures. They work just fine and don't require the additional template call, and the template is a bit kludgey anyway.
:Skimming quickly the [http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Help:Images mediawiki documentation on images], it seems they added a handy link= parameter as of 1.14. We're on 1.9.something IIRC. So add it to the list of stuff we don't have. {{User:The_Rooster/Sig}} 18:11, 1 March 2010 (UTC)
::In reference to your second paragraph, I've already tackled that problem if you check the link I provided earlier to [[User:Aichon/Sandbox/Archive_2009#For_Rorybob|here]]. Anyway, rather than explain how it can be done, I'll just link [[User:Aichon/Sandbox/Demo8|an example]] of it in action. I changed the link's color to be semi-transparent red, that way you can see that it's overlaying the image, but it'd be trivial to remove that coloration. Does this satisfy what everyone was looking for? I can clean up the code and simplify it a bit, maybe even toss it into a template, if people want it. {{User:Aichon/Signature}} 18:31, 1 March 2010 (UTC)
:::I think I lost points for skim reading your previous reply. And I just fixed {{tl|Click}} to be less fail too. You should go ahead and alter that template. In the meantime, perhaps there's other stuff I can solve half-assedly that you already have solutions for? {{User:The_Rooster/Sig}} 18:40, 1 March 2010 (UTC)
::::Do you think you could possibly stop fucking arbitrarily altering the templates others are using, particularly if you're going to make them worse? For fuck's sake, go create a new version and we'll decide which one we prefer. -- {{User:Iscariot/Signature}} 18:46, 1 March 2010 (UTC)
:::::Apologies, I forgot you had tests for it. But I don't see that I broke anything. {{User:The_Rooster/Sig}} 19:00, 1 March 2010 (UTC)
::::::Well, according to your own documentation, five times height/width causes breakage whereas the old one had no such limitation. Going backwards is not good. -- {{User:Iscariot/Signature}} 19:10, 1 March 2010 (UTC)
:::::::The previous version left out the note that it failed above 100px high or ~80px wide. Far worse, in my opinion. {{User:The_Rooster/Sig}} 19:15, 1 March 2010 (UTC)
::::More often than not, you're the one with the solution that ''I'm'' looking for. Anyway, Click looks like it can be simplified quite a bit if we use my approach, and my approach also has the advantage of not showing the underline through the middle of the div when you mouseover the link (the text of my link consists of a single space with a font size of 0px, so the underline doesn't appear at all). I'm pretty sure my approach would also work for any size at all. I'll toss together a template quickly, as per Iscariot's suggestion, and you guys can see what you think of it. {{User:Aichon/Signature}} 18:49, 1 March 2010 (UTC)
:::::Ok, added a bit to the [[User:Aichon/Sandbox/Demo8|demo]] page to show off the new [[User:Aichon/Sandbox/Templates11|template]] in action. If it looks good, feel free to move it to the public namespace with an appropriate name. Also, mine lets you set the mouseover text if you want, which Click doesn't do, I just realized, but otherwise you should probably be able to swap mine in directly for Click, since they need the same variables. {{User:Aichon/Signature}} 18:56, 1 March 2010 (UTC)

::::::::Ok, I did a bit more editing, and near as I can tell, it works in almost every major browser. I've fool-proofed it a bit too. All told, I made the following changes:
::::::::*If you set your height too small for the link to cover the entire image, the image gets cut off. Should be obvious to the user, I think.
::::::::*If you set your height too large and the link exceeds the image, rather than giving you blank space that acts as a link, the excess area is colored in fuchsia and instructions for fixing it show up in that space (true story).
::::::::*IE8 degrades gracefully, near as I can tell, and in most cases acts as if the link wasn't even there (i.e. you should still use image redirects for IE users). I didn't test IE7. And I'm willing to bet that this thing breaks IE6 all to hell.
::::::::*Issues with cross-browser vertical alignment seem to have been fixed (FF was behaving differently than WebKit).
::::::::Take a look at the new examples I've posted [[User:Aichon/Sandbox/Demo8|here]] to get an idea of what I'm talking about. Ok, after seeing several of you guys copying the code from my Sandbox to use in your signatures (*cough*Misanthropy, DDR, Axe Hack*cough*), and with me wanting to clear it out of my Sandbox, I figured it was finally time to sort this thing out once and for all (at least you all had the decency not to include my Sandbox page in your sigs). Since I didn't know for sure whether my template was a drop-in replacement for Click that would always work where Click had worked, or if there might be some edge cases where Click worked but my template didn't, I've been really gun shy about replacing Click. Instead, I just went ahead and set it up as a new template, just to be safe. Well, more precisely, two templates: [[Template:ClickInternal]] and [[Template:ClickExternal]]. As the names imply, the first is for internal links, while the second is for external links, and they should both work just as you guys expect already. Let me know if you run into any trouble with them. {{User:Aichon/Signature}} 20:42, 8 August 2010 (BST)

=== Wiki Policy on Impersonation ===
I have a question regarding the content allowed or not allowed on group pages, related to [[UDWiki:Specific Case Editing Guidelines]]. If a group attempts to impersonate and claim to be part of a different group that is has nothing to do with, can this be prevented? Can such a group be forced to include a NPOV introduction containing the notice that the following claims and so on are POV?<br />
I am aware that impersonating another wiki user is considered vandalism, does this apply to impersonating another group as well?<br />
An example is the page [[Malton Vice Unit]]. While this group most obviously claims to be a part of the [[Department of Emergency Management|DEM]] and is impersonating it, as a matter of fact it is in no way affiliated with the DEM. Can this group (if it even is a real group, which can be doubted) be required to preferably remove the DEM references or at least include an introductory notice that the connection to the DEM is POV/RPing/whatever but not a fact and thus untrue?<br />
Thank you, [[User:G F J|G F J]] 14:27, 19 April 2010 (BST)
:I firstly must thank you for that NPOV notice on the NDEM, that'll do wonders for my chances to get a policy through to ban enforced NPOV sections.
:Remember that the notice at the top must be NPOV, which means you going "They're not us!!1!" is not NPOV ;)
:Anything else on those pages is up to the group in question. Which means they could put sections about that top notice being a deliberate lie and that in fact they are the dedicated rotted zombie wing of the DEM that are unleashed on any survivors that remind the metagame that you alt polices break the basic laws of this game as set down by Kevan and there's '''nothing''' you can do about it. I'd remind you that editing another group's page outside that NPOV into paragraph is vandalism, as is altering that paragraph from NPOV to emphasise any opinion you may have about them. -- {{User:Iscariot/Signature}} 20:33, 19 April 2010 (BST)
:Basically, you can add a brief, neutral explanation to the top of the page, explaining any deceptions. But you must be prepared to justify any claims you make in [[A/A|arbitration]] if you do, and it is challenged. You can also remove the page from any category owned by your group, no matter where on the page they include the category tag. ::Not really. On his group's templates he can, but not when the problem is community templates that the DEM has seen fit to brand as their own with a category tag. Using it on a page not affiliated with DEM, in order to impersonate them isn't what it was designed for. They're within their rights to remove pages that do use it from the DEM category, if they don't belong there. Is <nowiki>{{CURRENTHOUR}}</nowiki> infallible? Or can one page using it lag behind others? --{{User:TripleU/Sig}} 05:25, 22 July 2010 (BST)
:Pages get cached by the wiki software, resulting in some pages lagging behind others. They'll eventually update, but I've seen cases where they're a few hours off before. From what I can tell, the more unique people visiting the page, the sooner the wiki will refresh the page, though that's just anecdotal and a guess at best. However, doing a "null" edit (i.e. edit the page, then save it without making any changes) will result in it being updated to the correct time, or you can use <code>?action=purge</code> in the URL to force it to purge the cache for the page. Both of those ''do'' work, but require manual intervention. {{User:Aichon/Signature}} 06:53, 22 July 2010 (BST)

I have a idea of making my wiki character page look like a manila folder, that you page through, however I'm unsure how to place the images to allow me to add text to the pages while having the top and right side as the images of the folder. A example of what I'm looking for is here: http://imageshack.us/f/803/peecefiles.jpg/ I also added parts of the images to my [[User:Warren Peece/Sandbox| sandbox]], but am unsure how to align things top, side, bottom, ect. Possible to overlay the {DangerMap} with other info?
What was hoping to accomplish is creating an editable overlay for the DangerMap that would display the current location of my characters. This would both allow me to keep them separated to avoid tripping zerg flags and give me the entire DangerMap information as related to me at a glance.
I looked at how the DangerMap itself is constructed and I'm a little lost as to where I can start. I can see creating my own Map template and linking having each cell display the official DangerMap/suburb template... What would be really convenient is if I could have preferably one template for all characters or a template per character that would automatically update my Map with my character's new position without me having to change the actual map.
To expand, I'm hoping to have a character template where I just change a value or write the name of the new suburb my character is in and have the change take place on my map automatically.
Is this at all possible or am I dreaming? :P-- ZZ 20:45, 28 April 2008 (BST)
- Yeah, its possible. What you want to do is use DIV's that use relative / absolute positioning to overlay one element on top of another. In this case, you'd maybe overlay a simple bit of text on top of the danger map. The danger map may not be the ideal tool for this, however, because its not set to any defined size. Swiers 21:21, 28 April 2008 (BST)
- I should expand: I would create a new map template for myself that would be fixed size and smaller than the current Danger Map. To accomplish this I'm hoping to strip out the suburb names and placing them into tooltips instead. I'll have to play around to see if a cell can be a link or if I'll have to figure out something else.
- BTW, do you know if JavaScript is usable with the Wiki? Also, a div overlay seems like a good start if I can get it right and be able to "move" suburbs by adjusting the text position by a fixed value up/down/left/right. Do you or anyone else have any additional thoughts on what can be done? Would it be possible to display two templates in a cell if one tells how the cell is colored (DangerMap information) and the other one places text in the cell? Thank you once again!-- ZZ 22:18, 28 April 2008 (BST)
- Javascript does NOT work on the wiki. And yes, you can easily have two templates affecting one table cell. All a template does is fill in some code / text. Swiers 03:11, 29 April 2008 (BST)
- After a good chunk of mindless work (100 suburbs to change!) I have a modified dangermap that I'm very happy with. It's done entirely in HTML and the neatest thing about it is that the name of each suburb pops up in a tooltip when you hover over a specific cell.
- Now my task would be to somehow merge that map with information about my characters' location. I thought hard about it and I'm really drawing a blank. I'll try

Help with Scenteral Intelligence Map/grid map
My experience using style tags is minimal, and I'm having some trouble figuring out how to gracefully handle placing one elements on top of another. My problems on the above page are twofold.
First, the grid image and names table that overlap the scent image table, while lined up properly, seem to be "displacing" elements below them by forcing them down the page. I re-positioned the later elements to move them up the page as well, but this still leaves a bunch of whitespace (1796px worth) at the end of the page. Is there any way to avoid this?
Secondly, the table that the grid image and suburbs name table overlay normally displays images which have their own tooltip tags. I want people to be able to see THOSE tooltips, not the ones for the topmost (z index wise) element. Is there any way to fix that? Swiers 17:11, 23 April 2008 (BST)

Small Animated GIFs
Here's something to debate. As we all know the recommended cap on images is 150KB. The purpose, other than keeping people from using up all the server's storage space, is to maintain a certain degree of wikipage loading standards on the UD Wiki. Larger images take longer to load and in the meantime their absence during this period is annoying. Now I recently worked on creating an animated GIF, with images scaled to 125x100px, each no larger than 10-13KB each. The effect required a long series of random images to flip past (.25 sec each), but after creating the animated GIF I realized that I had 50 images, and when tallied up that came to around 550+KB, well exceeding the recommended maximum file size. To correct the issue I removed some of the images, but the more images I removed lessened its overall effectiveness. In truth I would need to reduce it to 13-15 images in order to meet the recommended file size limit.
That said, unlike single large images animated GIFs load each individual image in an effect that appears to work similar to streamed video (in laymen's terms obviously). As such, it takes very little time to load a 10-13 KB image, and then move onto the next one in the sequence. With that in mind, would it be unacceptable to have such a large image file if it did in fact perform its function (albeit slowly at first)? Or do you all believe that it's an annoyance nonetheless? --Mobius187 20:09, 30 December 2007 (UTC)
- I don't really see an issue. Its only a guideline, right? Animated gifs DO load thier initial frame quite quickly, and the guideline exists to steer people away from doing something stupid. It doesn;t cover all of good practice, or even avoid all bad practices. However, if you ARE going to use such a large image file, be sure to tag it with a text alternative (so people see something useful even if it hasn't load) and size attributes (so the browser can render the page properly if it hasn't loaded- this is STILL important with animated gifs, as its possible for later frames to be "oversize" compared to the originals, I think). Those two things will cover a LOT of problems.
Of course, it also matters where you plan to USE this image. If gets a lot of calls (as part of a high traffic page, used in a template, whatever) then its still a bad idea. Swiers 23:28, 30 December 2007 (UTC)- The original intent for the image was to be used in a template, but as you mentioned that might be an unsound idea. Not that I believe the template will be all that popular, but there exists that potential, not to mention where users would opt to place the template. Again, considerable effort went into creating the animated image, so rather than lose that work I would instead prefer to reuse it in a non-template capacity. In this case as additional content on the NecroWatch wikipage (to which the image relates). Until I can find a good location for the image though I intend to hold off uploading it. On the topic of template images, when it comes to animated GIFs what is generally considered a common file size for them (as I have seen a few) or is it simply not recommended at all? --Mobius187 23:35, 30 December 2007 (UTC)

Oh and on the suburb map of vinetown i was trying to mark a building vsb, but i cant get it ti allign in its little box properly. Hows that work. I have no idea what i'm doing.--Rosslessness 10:33, 16 December 2007 (UTC)

Right i'm talking rubbish. I assumed wasteland and streets were treated in the same way. and theyre not. Wateland has coords, streets do not. The VSB question remains.--Rosslessness 12:22, 16 December 2007 (UTC)
- That's because all wastelands have the same name... so we added the coordinates to differentiate them. And, the suburb map is not the place for marking building's barricade levels. Vinetown needs a barricade plan for that information -- boxy talk • i 12:32 16 December 2007 (BST)

User Page Mess
My user page, User:Rhuster, has something wrong with the formating. I'm really not too good with HTML; could someone better take a look at it? All I want are small spaces between News Updates, and instead I get this jumbled thing...--Rhuster 13:35, 13 December 2007 (UTC)
- I had a go at your user page Rhuster... main problem seemed to be the right alignment of the templates you were using. I also put a table in so that it limited the width of each separate template, regardless of how much you type into it (which is why some were narrower than others -- boxy talk • i 11:28 16 December 2007 (BST)

Template Overload Update
When we get too many templates on a page, the templates no longer include themselves... nothing new in that. But I've just noticed that it now replaces them with a link to the page, which seems to work alright for User sig templates, located in their userspace... but not for actual template namespace templates. Category talk:Suggestions is where I noticed it. Seems to be a worse solution than the old one, where it just didn't include the template, but just displayed the wiki code for the template call.
It also includes the following text <!-- WARNING: template omitted, pre-expand include size too large -->
Does anyone know if this is something we can control? -- boxy • talk • 13:26 9 November 2007 (BST)
- There's practices to help avoid hitting the limit, wikipedia has more detail about those and background information about this problem. Also, in Kevan's talk archive there's a relevant conversation about the issue. A control-F search for "You may want" should bring it up. --Toejam 19:00, 9 November 2007 (UTC)
- Yeah, I had a look around in Kevans talk page archives, but I did know there was a limit already, and it's necessary to stop mega-vandalism... it's just that the wiki seems to be handling it different than I remember. You used to be able to split the page up and archive stuff, and the templates would work again, but with the new system I believe it will permanently break them -- boxy • talk • 07:08 10 November 2007 (BST)

Noteworthy suburbs
could someone answer a question for me? to quote the article on noteworthy suburbs it says "Suburbs listed in boldface contain notable locations, groups, or events." do we have any current noteworthy suburbs that are only noteworthy because of a group?--'BPTmz 03:05, 12 September 2007 (BST)
- Well, the reasoning for each of the listed suburbs is here, so I suppose some of those suburbs are only noteworthy because of their group and the group's activities in that suburb. Personally I think the noteworthy suburbs thing is a little bit silly. --Toejam 16:02, 26 September 2007 (BST)
- A few actually, the majority I would think are completely because certain groups reside there. Ridleybank is for the Ridleybank Resistance Front, Barhahville and Stanbury Village are partially on there for that too, except Stanbury Village also had Stanstock. Eastonwood is on there simply because of the Eastonwood Ferals, and Shearbank is there for DARIS. All the ones listed because of groups have frequently have/had events happening in them because of that groups residence. --Karekmaps?! 22:53, 26 September 2007 (BST)
Question on deletions
Sorry to place this here. But I cannot find a clear statement regarding deletions. When someone deletes postings that are not his own on a board (such as a suburb map and the posted information) I would consider that vandalism. I can understand counter posting to correct errors and the like. But deleting seems wrong. Still there is nothing in the policy to clearly state deletions would be a bad thing. I thought I would put this here first with no names, just so anything I may not clearly understand could be cleared up.--Wke235 03:53, 9 September 2007 (BST)
- Hmm...try that suburb talk page. There's a high chance your post may have been moved to the talk page. By the way, I believe this goes on that wiki questions page. --•▬ ▬••▬ • •••• •▬ ▬•▬• ▬•▬ #nerftemplatedsigs 03:59, 9 September 2007 (BST)

- On this wiki, any action that is done with good intentions is not viewed as vandalism. So if someone deletes another editor's postings because they think there's a good reason to, then that wouldn't be vandalism, even if they were mistaken. Having said that, deletions are often a sensitive issue, and people shouldn't be reckless in what they remove. Deleting other people's comments is strongly discouraged unless there's a good reason. The exception is your own talk page, where you can delete whatever you want. --Toejam A Stats Graph 20:03, 10 September 2007 (BST)
This Makes HTML Look Like Childs Play
XxPale HorsexX / XxCannon FodderxX -
These images in my signature all link to the image host, and not the wiki page(s) or the forum. How do I accompish this, add in a time stamp, and have the user text smaller?
Thanks in andvance. --XxPale HorsexX / XxCannon FodderxX 12:42, 27 August 2007 (BST)
- To make images link to wiki pages you can use the {{Click}} template eg
{{Click|link=Main Page|image=Spirit_Skull.gif|height=100px|width=100px}}
- Timestamps can be added directly by adding five tildes (~~~~~) to your signature, or if you go to my preferences (it's at the top-right of the screen) and in the User Profile tab you put your signature in the nickname field and save it, then the wiki will automatically add it after you signature each time you sign. (More info).
- To make user text smaller, you can use
<small>some small text</small>
which appears as some small text, or<font size="-2">some more small text</font>
which looks like some more small text. -- T 13:05, 27 August 2007 (BST)
- You can just use HTML if you like. The wiki isn't like a phbBB- you can paste in straight HTML and it works fine (if it would work on a normal page). Unrelated, your images are to big for a sig. There is a 14 pixel height limit. Swiers 14:11, 27 August 2007 (BST)

You know, the one in parentheses? I was wondering, what does that signify? Also, why does my group page currently have (-982)? --D4rkness 06:55, 16 August 2007 (BST)
- Actually, nevermind. I think I figured it out. It has to do with the number of characters added or subtracted from the page, right? Still, it seems something like that should be pointed out somewhere...--D4rkness 07:05, 16 August 2007 (BST)
- Yep, it's the number of characters added to an article (well, strictly speaking it's the number of bytes), and a minus number means characters are taken away. Tracking Changes has more details about watchlists. -- T 07:20, 16 August 2007 (BST)

Cleaning up Pages / Archiving Old Information
I was just wondering what the rule(s) is/are for cleaning up extremely old notes on a page, or perhaps archiving the information. By cleaning up, I mean deleting, which from what I have seen is considered 'vandalism' on the site. The problem is, there is old information from 2006 with no relevance for the future (speaking specifically of the Shore Hills page). I think it would be okay in a "History" section or if was archived off the main page - but it is confusing for new people (particularly me).
A link or quote would be fantastic, I want to make sure that I'm not stepping on toes - rotted or live --Ryiis 22:54, 20 June 2007 (BST)

Watchlist type pages that ANYBODY can view?
Is there any way to have a "watchlist" page that isn't tied to a specific account? I'd love to, for example, set up a "watchlist" that contains all the "User:NTstatus/Suburb" pages, so people can easily see when they are being updated. For one thing, it would let me take them all off my own personal watchlist, which is waayyyy to big at this point. I was thinking maybe this could be done via a "sock puppet" account, but that would require people to log into that account, which would be annoying for users and may result in misuse of the account. --Seb_Wiers VeM 13:30, 13 May 2007 (BST)
- Related Changes sounds like it fits the bill. It's on the left hand side of the screen in the toolbox section. You use it on a wiki page and what it does is it shows you all the recent changes in the pages linked to from the original page. So if you make a page that links to all of the "User:NTstatus/Suburb" pages, then using related changes on that page should show you all the changes to the "User:NTstatus/Suburb" pages, like a watchlist with all the "NTstatus/Suburb" pages on it. Here's wikipedia's article about it. --Toejam 12:28, 14 May 2007 (BST)
- Interesting. And it looks like you can create links directly to that special page as well, which would be nice to place on the map page and some other places. Non-Bold and Other Alternate Formating for Headers

Hey there. How do you like UD coverage? I hope the Malton Gazette to be awesome. Haven't started advertising as of now, but please take a look and tell me what you think (or if you can write!)--I'm trying here. My question is with the TOC; I thought I had a brilliant scheme for formatting my paper, and eventually used HTML to do away with those wiki headers. Now my TOC is gone. Is there a way to be able to include sections (i.e. Headlines, Competitions, Features, Classifieds, Masthead) in the/a table of contents without putting up a list or making them into wiki headers, and how? "Watching" an entire category (100 pages)
Is there some way to watche every page within a category? The NT Status Map uses 100 sub-pages to allow individual updates to each suburbs information on the map (similar to the suburb maps danger level system) and I;d like to know when they are updated, but didn't "watch" all of the relevant pages, and dread opening all 100 again. - Sorry, watching a Category only will alert you to when the text on category page is changed not when new things are added to the category. You will have to select each page you want to watch on its own in order to keep track of every change. Vantar 01:55, 18 March 2007 (UTC)
- I was aware what watching a category did (and does not) accomplish, I'm just surprised there's not some further way to more easily watch every page that is in a category. Bummer. Now, the topic is really which zombie skills are useful or usable as a survivor and which items and survivor skills are useful or usable as a zombie as well as which you would be advised to get to be as good as you can be. Now a short and concise but precise name is needed, of which I can't think of one.
I feel that there is a need of such an article, as most players try to get all of the skills that they can do, and this will help them to see what's best for them from the other side.
As well as this, quite a few articles go into this topic while only exploring their own part of it - a list of all that I could find is this:
- Category:Skills - Two notes under ' Completing the Skill Tree' - the current most comprehensive article for this topic
- Zombie Skills - Under Human Skills useful to Zombies discusses the survivor skills for zombies and also the Flak Jacket, dismissing other items (probably good for this place, but not for a comprehensive analysis)
- Talk:Zombie Skills also has a section Zombie Skills, Do they cross Over? which is useful
- Melee Weapons - Crowbar has a vague mention of zombie usage against barricades, and beneath this, Baseball Bat and Length of Pipe it discusses in limited detail their usage for zombies as weapons.
- Useful Items - Benefits to zombies mentioned under Flak Jacket, and unclearly for Mobile Phones, zombie use of Radios and lack of it for GPS is not mentioned at all.
Now all of these should reference this article, and possibly be entirely replaced by such a link.
I think that the two articles that I made should be entirely deleted, rather than just redirecting, as the names aren't probably going to be used for searching by ordinary people, and they are flawed themselves anyway. I've also put links here from their talk pages, and also in Category talk:Skills#Cross Death Boundary Skills.
If the merge is done, then I think that the talk page stuff should be transferred, with the stuff on bold being put onto the article main. Of course, if I get a name then I'd be more than happy to do all of this myself.
Thanks for reading this and any suggestions will be really truly appreciated. Thanks --xensyriaT 15:48, 4 March 2007 (UTC)
- Thats not really a question and this is not really the best place for suggesting an idea, if your looking for other's people thoughts on it you'll have better luck on the Community Portal talk page, but since it here. I think the best place for this information would be on the Zombie page, the article already mentions the Body Building skill usefulness to zombies under the Tactical Overview subsection so you might be able to add to that with information about the usability of items and other usable human skills I can't see this information becoming much more than a paragraph. Putting a Heading in a Table
I want to have something like this:
{| style = "text-align:center ; background:black ; color:red" |[[Image:Deadair_thumb.gif]] |== News Flash [[Talk:Dead_Air#XXXX_XXXX|XXXX_XXXX]] == |[[Image:Deadair_thumb.gif]] |}
That is, I want the heading to actually be inside the table. I can not get this to work, no matter where I put my =='s. If I put them outside the table, the table breaks, if inside they display as literals. Is this possible?--SporeSore 14:49, 14 February 2007 (UTC)
: You can not add a heading to a table as far as I can tell. You could fake it making a template
like this:
{| style = "text-align:center ; background:black ; color:red" |[[Image:Deadair_thumb.gif]]|} == News Flash [[Talk:Dead_Air#XXXX_XXXX|XXXX_XXXX]] == {| style = "text-align:center ; background:black ; color:red" |[[Image:Deadair_thumb.gif]]|} |}
and then make a table with the template in it Vantar 20:49, 4 March 2007 (UTC)
oops I just noticed an extra | in my anwser before, I've updated my answer to be sorry about that Vantar 01:58, 18 March 2007 (UTC)

{| style = "text-align:center ; background:black ; color:red" |[[Image:Deadair_thumb.gif]] | == News Flash [[Talk:Dead_Air#XXXX_XXXX|XXXX_XXXX]] == |[[Image:Deadair_thumb.gif]] |}
sorry about the mix up, the other way works but it is a lot more labor intensive Vantar 02:51, 18 March 2007 (UTC)
Redirects to subpages
Can you tell me why redirects to subpages in an article don't truly work. Try entering
Knife
It'll take you to the top of Melee Weapons. Then click on
(redirected from knife)
and then on
Melee Weapons (the link used to redirect to in theory)
and it'll take you to the correct place in the page (i.e. knife)
What's the deal with that?
--xensyriaT 17:51, 1 February 2007 (UTC)
- sorry this as taken so long to answer I have been trying to find out and I stumbled across the answer by accident while answering your most recent question the problem is between the # used for the redirect and the # used for the link to a section heading. see Help:Links for more information. Project Wonderful Breaking The Wiki AGAIN
The 'project wonderful' (aptly named for the irony-mongers) ad is breaking the wiki again, in Firefox at least. Because it won't download quickly (it takes approx. 1 minute), it makes the browser look as if it hasn't completed the page download. Can't they make their ad a little bit smaller? Or their server a little bit more efficient? --Funt Solo 09:39, 30 January 2007 (UTC)
- Are you running Firefox 1.5.X or Firefox 2.0.X because I have have never noticed that problem while I have been running Firefox. Kevan as already set the ads to load a fast a Project Wonderful allows (a size of 117 px x 30px with no animations) so it is unlikely that the ads will change to be smaller, as for plans for Project Wonderful to run more efficiently you would have to ask them about it. Vantar 22:42, 30 January 2007 (UTC)
- Aye, I run Firefox. It must be a server issue - and on their side as well - there's no slowdown of any of the wiki images loading. It's okay right now, so I guess this is just something that comes and goes with the ebb and flow of their traffic. --Funt Solo 17:43, 1 February 2007 (UTC)

Broken Internal Links
Hi, is there a page which shows the list of internal links in this wiki that aren't currently working? I thought that I found it before, but try as I might I haven't been able to since. --xensyriaT 13:25, 27 January 2007 (UTC)
- There in no page that shows all the broken internal links, there is a pages that shows the broken redirects but the page you might be thinking of is Special:Wantedpages, a list of the most frequently linked to nonexistent pages. Vantar 23:38, 27 January 2007 (UTC)
Expected XP value page
I'd like to compile a page with the expected XP value of various activities, based on the amount of AP you put into them. As an easy example, every AP you spend to attack a zombie as a newborn firefighter gives you on average 3/4ths of an experience point - however, when dealing with items like first aid kits and pistols, things become somewhat more difficult to calculate as you need to spend time foraging for supplies. In any case, the problem shouldn't be completely intractable. Should I just go ahead and start the page, or is there one like it already that I've missed? And if there isn't, is there some other reason not to have one? It seems sort of strange that no one else has started something like this. Enziet 03:52, 26 January 2007 (UTC)
- I know that work has been done to calculate search odds and weapon effectiveness that can be found
Guides:Ranged vs. Melee Weapon Efficiency and Search Odds these pages will cover most of the the details of how many AP will be spent to the get each each FAK and the such. Vantar 04:18, 26 January 2007 (UTC)

Suggestion Archives Category
I was looking through Special:Uncategorizedpages and noticed that there are 476 pages of old suggestions without a category. Would creating a "Suggestion Archive" category and then adding it to the old suggestions pages be acceptable or is there a reason why they are unsorted? Vantar 21:30, 16 January 2007 (UTC)
- I've looked a little deeper in to this problem and found that there is a very unused Suggestions category, so unless someone can give me a reason not to, I plan on adding a few subcategories such as undecided and rejected to Category:Suggestions and then apply this category throughout the Suggestions/* monstrosity. Vantar 10:58, 21 January 2007 (UTC)
- Good idea- it looks like you've already worked on that, no? Take a look at Talk:Suggestions#Make_Suggestions_Their_Own_Pages - you can vote on the issue, and check out links to related ideas / discussion / categories. Notably, category: suggestion would be for suggestions currently undergoing discussion / voting. I'd love for somebody to set up a new system so we don't keep dumping stuff down the same hard-to-manage path, and would be happy to help as much as I can. I'd already considered doing some work on it, but my attempts seem to elicit negative reactions. --S.Wiers X:00 22:12, 10 February 2007 (UTC)

Post moved?
I posted news in the Shearbank article, signed/timestamped it, left the computer, came back after a few hours, checked the Shearbank article for any news, and found that my post had been moved. Not just moved to the top of that day's news, moved into an entirely new day. Backstory
How much are we allowed to fiddle with peripheral backstory? I'd noticed that most suburbs don't have backstories, and I asked around if I could tweak them, got a yes from someone who doesn't even like me, and played a bit. Just want to make sure that's alright. I mean, I'm not making any references to any groups or individuals that are in-game, I'm maintaining a within-reason and reality-based style, and including a speck of humor here or there. Is this alright? I certainly don't plan to do many more, that's for the next user who has the same inspiration. Miscellaneous
I was wondering, can some one tell me how to change the status symbol at the top of the page for a mall? (I.E Giddings Mall's page says it has been ransacked, yet there are 300 survivors inside)KingdomsSword 19:00, 07 July 2008 (PST)
- To update Gidding Mall's status, go to the page Giddings Mall, and near the top right of the page there should be a link labeled '(update)'. If you click it, it will take you to User:DangerReport/Giddings_Mall (Who's not actually a real user.) There's instructions there about the different possible statuses like safe, under attack etc. Decide which status best describes the current situation in Giddings Mall, then click 'edit' at the top of the page. There'll be a section that looks something like this:
|status=ransacked |comment=There were 50 zombies in one corner of the mall, which was ruined. |user=DaveBF 21:08, 7 July 2008 (BST)
- The text on the right of the equals sign might be different, that's perfectly fine.
- Now, where it says 'ransacked' replace it with the new status that you've picked, and in the comment section replace the old comment with a new comment briefly describing the state of the mall. Then add your signature over the old one. Finally, click save, and it's done! Hope this helps. --Toejam 06:25, 8 July 2008 (BST)

How can I get in touch with someone who can answer my questions regarding PayPal donations and exemptions from the 160 hit per ISP law? ----GrayGhost 02:50, 10 Jan 2006 (GMT)
- (NOTE: This is the inappropriate section for this question. If this answer is helpful, perhaps move this whole bit to the FAQ.)
- The donation policy is clearly stated at www.urbandead.com/donate.html.
- -You can Only donate through PayPal, or via purchasing Kevan something from his Amazon Wishlist.
- -Every $5 one donates through either method allows the donor to exempt 1 character from the 160 hit limit. The character is declared as part of the donation form.
- -If too many characters are declared, the highest on the list are always processed first, ignoring any others.
- -Exemptions do not expire.
- -Exemptions can never be moved between characters.
- (The following points of the policy are unclear and should be changed if they are inaccurate)
- -The donation amount is measured in US Dollars(USD).
- -Donations are always rounded down to the nearest 5 dollars for character-exemption purposes.
- -No actions taken with an exempted character count against an IPs 160 hit limit. (This should be verified by someone with an exempted character.)
- It is recommended that you do not try to contact Kevan directly, he recieves a great deal of email. If you had a large donation or an especially important issue that none of the other players can answer, you may find a way to contact him on his website kevan.org.

In summary: write a little bit about your group, then find the section on the page which is appropriate for your group (Human group/zombie group/Pker group etc), and finally, add the description of your group to that section, which is in alphabetical order. Jonny, this did help it's better then what it was. Now they line up starting from the left straight across. Now I'd like to line up left, but stack on top of each other rather then read across. Maybe I need to add them as rows?--John Blast 17:35, 26 December 2006 (UTC)

Is there a magic word for this?
I am just getting into creating wiki pages but I've noticed that when ever I go to a subpage of one of my pages, say for example User:Logan_Ash/Activity it will show a small link at the top of the page saying this: < User:Logan Ash. How can I get rid of this link, as it bumps my pages down a notch, which in my opinion messes up my layout.
- Sorry, but AFAIK it can't be done, as this is an automatic feature of the MediaWiki software. I'm open to being corrected, however. —Revenant talk 17:26, 11 June 2007 (BST)
- I know it is down on group pages, like Metal Fox and Philosophe Knights, but I am begining to think it is a built in feature of the User Pages. ~ Logan Ash ~ 18:36, 11 June 2007 (BST)
User scripts?
Most of my wiki experience comes from Wikipedia. Over there I have access to some very useful scripts which help with tasks such as reverting vandalism. These scripts should be able to operate on any MediaWiki installation. However, when I tried importing one via the normal method (change skin to MonoBook, add relevant code to monobook.js), it doesn't appear to be loading.
So I checked the FAQ for the one I use the most, which had this as its key point:
- Enable user javascript and user css on the wiki (see Wikipedia:Meta:Help:User_style#General)
I'm guessing this is disabled, since that appears to be the default setting. Is it possible for it to be enabled? I was going to post on Kevan's talk page, but it said to post here about wiki-related questions. So... over to you! —Revenant talk 17:25, 11 June 2007 (BST)
- Yep, I think this probably is disabled. I messed around with it, trying more or less the same code here and on the wikimedia wiki and the result was that nothing happened here and something happened there, so it's likely just not turned on. --Toejam 02:06, 14 June 2007 (BST)
- I was wondering what you were trying to do with those two pages. How do these scripts make reverting vandalism easier? -- boxy T L ZS Nuts2U DA 02:55, 14 June 2007 (BST)
- The tool I use most is called Navigation popups, and as the description says, it "offers easy access to article previews and several Wikipedia functions in popup windows which appear when you hover the mouse over links." So, for example, I can mouseover a diff link in a page history, see that somebody added a reference to an implausible feature of their anatomy, and revert it from there. Much less clicking, much less page loading, automatic edit summaries... very useful. And it's especially easy to get used to being able to see where a link is leading you – sometimes I don't even have to view the target page, because I can get the gist form the popup. See the link for more details on how this one works. —Revenant talk 14:06, 14 June 2007 (BST)
Removing old suggestions on developing suggestions page
I was wondering if it was ok to remove real old suggestions that just take up room on the suggestions page if they haven't been removed yet or to put them into an archieve. If we need to archieve them plese give a link to the archeive page. --El Rose 18:40 23 August 2007
- Yeah it's fine, if there's no new comments for more than 5 days or so, then delete 'em (or write a message by the top of the suggestion saying that it'll be deleted soon, and then delete it in a few days). There's no archiving anymore (there used to be, but it was a lot of work for little value, so we stopped archiving and started deleting. Much easier.) -- T 11:10, 24 August 2007 (BST)
How Do I Put a Link In the Edit Summary?
How do I make a link in the edit summary to, for example, to the voting section of a suggestion, which looks like this:
(→Voting Section) Clicking on the arrow is a link to the voting section of the suggestion.
Or, even a link to my question this page's history?

OK, I'll try putting "linky" in the summary box.

Now I'm having having getting this perfect, just making the arrow a link to the voting section, and just having Voting Section in grey letters, like most posters. Can you give me an example for the summary of this page, for example. To get to the voting section via the arrow.

This example has the visual of only seeing the phrase "Voting Section" while linking directly to that section. --Max Grivas JG / M.F.T. 23:13, 25 September 2007 (BST)
It's best to have the link outside of the edit /* */ because links in it screw up the arrow(even if the header is a link). If you put it after it has a link to what you want, if you want to link the section you just edited it already does that(clicking the arrow). Very annoying, best to not put links as headers until media wiki decides to fix that, if ever. It's not really an issue if the link is to the header that you were editing, like what you did on the suggestions page.--Karekmaps?! 23:57, 25 September 2007 (BST)

Advanced Template usage help needed
End goal: An addition to Template:Suburb that displays the current status of the listed MalTel mast in a nice text format. So far: I have created Template:MalTelMastStatusText and several subpages following the model of Template:MalTelSuburbStatus_active and so on. I was unable to get a single-page conditional working correctly, because it wouldn't nicely parse 5 {{{{{ in a row. I'm guessing this version of MediaWiki doesn't support it, while the one at Wikipedia does? {{ {{{mast_status}}} |active=Active}} etc wouldn't work for me, just resulting in Template:Active. I couldn't use the parser functions described on Wikipedia either, like #ifeq. Anyway, what I have so far works nicely if I know the name of the tower whose status I need, for example here's Smith_Towers: Template:MalTelMastStatusText inactive . Let me know if I totally went about this the wrong way, or if I could have got conditionals working without a dozen subpages.
The problem: I want to incorporate this into the Template:Suburb template as said.
How do I determine the building name, from the Suburb name, which I know ( {{{Suburb}}} )? Well, my first thought is to work from the list on Template:NewMalTelAlpha. I could create a new page that associates a suburb parameter with a particular tower name. I can do a search & replace to format the list as needed, so no real worry about labor intensiveness. The problem is syntax or if this is even possible. The end result I'm anticipating is something along the lines of {{MalTelStatus|suburb={{{Suburb}}} }} then T:MalTelStatus gets the tower name for {{{Suburb}}} and returns MalTelStatusText for that tower's current condition.
I'm just not sure how to go about doing that.
Help much appreciated. --Zhani 06:55, 28 August 2008 (BST)

Templates and server load?
Could anyone explain to me the relation between template use and server load? Is just the fact that they require the movement/copying of data from one page to another? I've seen a template (ironically) disparaging the use of templated signatures as they increase server load; is this actually a significant problem? --aClashInRedSnow|talk 21:49, 23 December 2008 (UTC)
- I'm by no means an expert, but I've read that the server load increase is insignificant, if any. The main objection is that they are prime targets for vandalism (once the whole Developing Suggestions was posted in someone's sig,) and the server load one. Time Travel?
So...WTF?
If there's some edits during actual UTC 00:20 to 00:24, they should intersperse with an unbroken bot edit streak. If anybody else is getting this error, you could turn turing on bot edits in RC and seeing the result.
For the record, this is the streak as of now, currently just far enough into the future to be undisturbed.

- That can easily get around the system, yes. Images as direct links
I've seen, on a few different wikis, coding allowing images to be used as direct links to other pages - not like the redirects we tend to use here (such as with Iscariot's sig, for a prominent example). Examples of this can be see with the sprites here, or with the flag images in the infobox here. 22:47, 28 February 2010 (UTC)
- Pretty sure I've seen this before, but it might be that the mediawiki isn't good enough to sustain it. I had a fiddle, but I couldn't see an easy way of doing it. --Yonnua Koponen Talk ! Contribs 23:24, 28 February 2010 (UTC)
- Well, after checking out the template calls on WWII flag image template, [3], I didn't go further than that page I just linked cause I'm concentrating on a lecture atm, but judging by the code it's most like a div template hovering over the image that links straight to the page, so you can't actually click the flag cause it's hiding behind the transparent template of the same size. I believe Rooster (it might have been AHLG and Iscariot too) spent a bit of time in 2009 messing with the concept. -- 23:39, 28 February 2010 (UTC)

Thanks anyway, though. 23:59, 28 February 2010 (UTC)- As shown on this test (banner at the top), even when putting in larger values I couldn't get the link area to sustain beyond a certain limit. It might work for sigs, but I'd do some serious beta testing first, that example was for Bob, but I don't recall him ever using it so it's never been put into the wilds to interact with page code and other people's sigs. -- . . <== DDR Approved Editor 00:02, 1 March 2010 (UTC)

For those following at home, this page now contains last year's tests, combined with a proof of concept and a rendered sig using this method. Comments? -- . . <== DDR Approved Editor 00:50, 1 March 2010 (UTC)
- I'll be fiddling up the raw code as soon as I have the images finished, then we can see what it looks like on bigger and busier pages. Thanks again, Iz. 00:54, 1 March 2010 (UTC)
- Update the second, Mis and I just tried the multi-templated version in my sig. The template calls didn't cause page breakage, however we found that the sig would automatically rejustify itself on a new line, away from indented comments and that it would displace the timestamp as well. My table speak is exhausted. Spellcasting: SUMMON CODEMONKEY. -- . . <== DDR Approved Editor 01:25, 1 March 2010 (UTC)
Okay, I'm sick and heading to bed in a sec, so you'll have to excuse the fact that I just skimmed what you all said, but I can think of two possible ways to rig this up by using the technique that was described earlier (covering the image with a link).
- Set the image you want as the background image for a div. After that, create a link in the div with span around it that has display:block set for it and its width and height matching the size of the div. You can see an example of how to create a link with span in that manner here (mouse over Dakerstown on the map).
- If you can't set wiki images as background images (I honestly can't remember if it's possible at the moment), then do the same thing with the link as what I said for #1, but make sure its first in the code, with position:relative, float:left, and a z-layer that is higher than that of the image.
—Aichon— 07:03, 1 March 2010 (UTC)
- We can't set background images. Mediawiki itself is coded to remove the image code as it's a "security threat" (I think it's something about external images executing arbitrary code, but don't quote me on that. I don't get why you couldn't use local ones either). You put the code down, and the parser will silently remove the whole lot. The only thing that makes it when setting a background definition is the background-color attribute.
- So the other, working, option is just laying a big div on top.
- I think I can make it less fail and create a new version once I post this, but I'd still recommend image redirects for signatures. They work just fine and don't require the additional template call, and the template is a bit kludgey anyway.
- Skimming quickly the mediawiki documentation on images, it seems they added a handy link= parameter as of 1.14. We're on 1.9.something IIRC. So add it to the list of stuff we don't have. -- RoosterDragon 18:11, 1 March 2010 (UTC)
- In reference to your second paragraph, I've already tackled that problem if you check the link I provided earlier to here. Anyway, rather than explain how it can be done, I'll just link an example of it in action. I changed the link's color to be semi-transparent red, that way you can see that it's overlaying the image, but it'd be trivial to remove that coloration. Does this satisfy what everyone was looking for? I can clean up the code and simplify it a bit, maybe even toss it into a template, if people want it. —Aichon— 18:31, 1 March 2010 (UTC)
- I think I lost points for skim reading your previous reply. And I just fixed {{Click}} to be less fail too. You should go ahead and alter that template. - More often than not, you're the one with the solution that I'm looking for. —Aichon— 18:49, 1 March 2010 (UTC)
- Ok, added a bit to the demo page to show off the new template in action. If it looks good, feel free to move it to the public namespace with an appropriate name. Also, mine lets you set the mouseover text if you want, which Click doesn't do, I just realized, but otherwise you should probably be able to swap mine in directly for Click, since they need the same variables. —Aichon— 18:56, 1 March 2010 (UTC)
- Seems fine, may as well just replace Click outright. -- RoosterDragon 19:00, 1 March 2010 (UTC)
- I fixed up a few more things, so now you can have multiple image links on the same line. I think it probably also needs some fool-proofing done in cases where the sizes are set incorrectly. I notice that Click has overflow properties, which might be useful here as well. Otherwise, it's close to being or is ready, I'd say. Let's see what Mis thinks. —Aichon— 19:45, 1 March 2010 (UTC)

- Ok, I did a bit more editing, and near as I can tell, it works in almost every major browser. I've fool-proofed it a bit too. All told, I made the following changes:
- If you set your height too small for the link to cover the entire image, the image gets cut off. Should be obvious to the user, I think.
- If you set your height too large and the link exceeds the image, rather than giving you blank space that acts as a link, the excess area is colored in fuchsia and instructions for fixing it show up in that space (true story).
- IE8 degrades gracefully, near as I can tell, and in most cases acts as if the link wasn't even there (i.e. you should still use image redirects for IE users). I didn't test IE7. And I'm willing to bet that this thing breaks IE6 all to hell.
- Issues with cross-browser vertical alignment seem to have been fixed (FF was behaving differently than WebKit).
- Take a look at the new examples I've posted here to get an idea of what I'm talking about. Anyway, unless someone sees issues in their browser, I think it's done. I'm just hesitant to replace Click myself. ;) —Aichon— 02:15, 7 March 2010 (UTC)

Well, more precisely, two templates: Template:ClickInternal and Template:ClickExternal. As the names imply, the first is for internal links, while the second is for external links, and they should both work just as you guys expect already. Let me know if you run into any trouble with them. —Aichon— 20:42, 8 August 2010 (BST)

Wiki Policy on Impersonation
I have a question regarding the content allowed or not allowed on group pages, related to UDWiki:Specific Case Editing Guidelines. If a group attempts to impersonate and claim to be part of a different group that is has nothing to do with, can this be prevented? Can such a group be forced to include a NPOV introduction containing the notice that the following claims and so on are POV?
I am aware that impersonating another wiki user is considered vandalism, does this apply to impersonating another group as well?
An example is the page Malton Vice Unit. While this group most obviously claims to be a part of the DEM and is impersonating it, as a matter of fact it is in no way affiliated with the DEM. Can this group (if it even is a real group, which can be doubted) be required to preferably remove the DEM references or at least include an introductory notice that the connection to the DEM is POV/RPing/whatever but not a fact and thus untrue?
Thank you, G F J 14:27, 19 April 2010 (BST)
- I firstly must thank you for that NPOV notice on the NDEM, that'll do wonders for my chances to get a policy through to ban enforced NPOV sections.
- Remember that the notice at the top must be NPOV, which means you going "They're not us!!1!" is not NPOV ;)
- Anything else on those pages is up to the group in question. Which means they could put sections about that top notice being a deliberate lie and that in fact they are the dedicated rotted zombie wing of the DEM that are unleashed on any survivors that remind the metagame that you alt polices break the basic laws of this game as set down by Kevan and there's nothing you can do about it. I'd remind you that editing another group's page outside that NPOV into paragraph is vandalism, as is altering that paragraph from NPOV to emphasise any opinion you may have about them. -- . . <== DDR Approved Editor 20:33, 19 April 2010 (BST)
- Basically, you can add a brief, neutral explanation to the top of the page, explaining any deceptions. But you must be prepared to justify any claims you make in arbitration if you do, and it is challenged. You can also remove the page from any category owned by your group, no matter where on the page they include the category tag. Sometimes this may mean subst'ing a template (like the DEMnav one on that page) and removing the category manually -- boxy talk • teh rulz 10:06 20 April 2010 (BST)
- Not really. On his group's templates he can, but not when the problem is community templates that the DEM has seen fit to brand as their own with a category tag. Especially when he's already been going around demanding people remove themselves from his category when the fault is his members not knowing how to <no include> them on template pages. The fault is with the DEM here, not wiki users. -- . . <== DDR Approved Editor 10:18, 20 April 2010 (BST)
- Template:DEMnavbar isn't a community template. It's a DEM template, created by the group, for the group. Using it on a page not affiliated with DEM, in order to impersonate them isn't what it was designed for. They're within their rights to remove pages that do use it from the DEM category, if they don't belong there. Putting category tags in group specific templates is a legitimate way to ensure they are all categorised correctly -- boxy talk • teh rulz 10:28 20 April 2010 (BST)
- Thank you for the replies, Boxy. They certainly helped to clear this up. And yes, the Navbar template is indeed not a community template, it is group specific, edited only by DEM members and intended only for internal use. G F J 12:15, 20 April 2010 (BST)
- It makes no difference, you'd be better sticking no include tags on it as you cannot prevent groups using code and content, so they can still use an exact copy of that template. Still no response on why community templates somehow find themselves in the DEM category? I am Jack's complete lack of surprise. -- . . <== DDR Approved Editor 13:21, 20 April 2010 (BST)
- Just replace their use of the template with the code, and leave out the category tags. Here's some precedent for you -- boxy talk • teh rulz 04:31 21 April 2010 (BST)

Content outside page area
I know it's normally forbidden, though permissable when there's a pressing reason. Now, on my talk page I really like everything having the biggest header possible and that means 90% of the time I have to fix the way that the "+" button adds a second-level header automatically. So what I want to know is, would anyone actually give a toss if I were to throw a fixed-position blank space on my talk page that hid the "+" button so it couldn't be used, forcing manual addition of new headers? 23:32, 10 June 2010 (BST)
- Lol! Dude, there is a secret button which does that that is in the wikis coding and therefore isn't against policy. ;D --
- Despite my teasing, I'm gonna come right out and admit I don't know what it is anymore, I've forgotten. The only example of "+ mainpulation" on the wiki is UDWiki:General Discussion, where Linkthewindow (god bless his beautiful soul :*() added the secret word which forced a + tab on non-talk page. Is {{CURRENTHOUR}} infallible? Or can one page using it lag behind others? --VVV RPMBG 05:25, 22 July 2010 (BST)
- Pages get cached by the wiki software, resulting in some pages lagging behind others. They'll eventually update, but I've seen cases where they're a few hours off before. From what I can tell, the more unique people visiting the page, the sooner the wiki will refresh the page, though that's just anecdotal and a guess at best. However, doing a "null" edit (i.e. edit the page, then save it without making any changes) will result in it being updated to the correct time, or you can use
?action=purge
in the URL to force it to purge the cache for the page. Both of those do work, but require manual intervention. —Aichon— 06:53, 22 July 2010 (BST)- Even just previewing the page without any edits would refresh it too. I've found myself needing to do it a few times on my user page, it's as easy as a null edit only it doesn't clog up RC with nothings. 16:07, 22 July 2010 (BST)
- Interesting. So the more traffic I attract, the better gaming experience people will have. I can definitely put ?action=purge to use, though. Thonx. --VVV RPMBG 21:56, 22 July 2010 (BST)
- Null edits don't show up in RC or on Watchlists, Mis. At least they don't if you do them right (e.g. I just did a null edit of this page right before this edit). Also, merely previewing does not always do the trick. Previewing does let you see what the page would look like if it weren't cached, but it does not actually clear the cache in and of itself, I believe, so others may not see what you see necessarily. —Aichon— 22:40, 22 July 2010 (BST)

Image as border of page
I have a idea of making my wiki character page look like a manila folder, that you page through, however I'm unsure how to place the images to allow me to add text to the pages while having the top and right side as the images of the folder. A example of what I'm looking for is here: http://imageshack.us/f/803/peecefiles.jpg/ I also added parts of the images to my sandbox, but am unsure how to align things top, side, bottom, ect. Warren Peece 18:53, 12 May 2011 (BST)
- I've cobbled a simple table together to align the two pictures. You need to edit them a bit to make them match up, though. As for text, best you could do is to add another cell below the header image and give it the background color of the images. If you need help on all of that, I can activate my Gimp and see if I get that thingus running. --Oh, and vote on Project Funny, by the way. -- Spiderzed█ 19:09, 12 May 2011 (BST)
- Wow that was very fast, thank you. However how do I now place something below the top image and make it look as one image> Warren Peece 19:13, 12 May 2011 (BST)
- Again thank you.Warren Peece 19:25, 12 May 2011 (BST)
- I've just extracted the color code from the image in Gimp and added a cell filled with "Lorem Ipsum" below it - it should fit seamlessly. (Not sure why it doesn't properly align the text at the top as it should per valign="top", but I need to run away for a bit and can't tinker further.) Try out Help:Tables until I get back, or another user picks up. --Oh, and vote on Project Funny, by the way. -- Spiderzed█ 19:27, 12 May 2011 (BST)
- The right side of the image no longer shows the tab part but rather a large yellow tab. I understand this is part of the table at the bottom so that I can type in the area, but, is their a way to show the tab at the top right, as well as drop the size of the entire page so that it actually fits? You have been greatly helpful, thank you very much. As you can tell I am completely daft of what to do with coding.Warren Peece 19:46, 12 May 2011 (BST)
- Back. For some bizarro reason, it didn't let me use out the space directly under the top image for the text cell. So, I've crammed all the text into the same cell as the top image, which looks ugly, but at least lets me achieve what you wanted to achieve. I've also shrunk the images to about half their size. Think that should now have resolved everything. --Oh, and vote on Project Funny, by the way. -- Spiderzed█ 20:55, 12 May 2011 (BST)
- Relevant. The image border is at the other side of the page, but it's the same principle. You just need to nest table cells - it's not as complex as it sounds, but you will need to visualise how to break then down. Draw a grid out and figure out what should be in each one before you start coding the table. 01:06, 13 May 2011 (BST)
- I got a majority of the idea down, (thanks again Spiderzed) however it's not exactly what I'm looking for. It might be the images themselves. I want the entire page to look like the cover, with clickable links to other pages. The rest of the pages, will look like if you were looking inside a manilla envolope filled with typed papers, the file tap, with Warrens name will still be visable on all, and have a navation bar linking to other pages. Not even sure if this is possilbe, and I have absolutely no knowledge of how to do these things but I want it to look amazing. Warren Peece 02:13, 17 May 2011 (BST)

Try out Help:Tables until I get back, or another user picks up. --Oh, and vote on Project Funny, by the way. -- Spiderzed█ 19:27, 12 May 2011 (BST)

- Wow that was very fast, thank you. However how do I now place something below the top image and make it look as one image> Warren Peece 19:13, 12 May 2011 (BST)
Tolman Catastrophe
Hello again. I was updating/working on my character descriptions when I saw that the link for the Tolman Catastrophe was broken, checked it out, and found out that the page was deleted by Vapor. Normally, I don't mind wiki updates, but why was this deleted since it's a part of Malton history, after all, it pretty much destroyed the surrounding area.

- It was brought up on a vote on A/D, and the deletion votes won out. Several similar pages were done at the same time. I think the information was migrated to location pages for some or all of them. 19:31, 19 July 2011 (BST)
- It was up for a deletion vote. The information has been merged into Burges Towers and Tolman Power Station, as the article was too negligible to warrant its own page by the view of the voters. -- Spiderzed█ 19:33, 19 July 2011 (BST)
- Alright. -- TheBardofOld 19:46, 19 July 2011 (BST)
- Yeah sorry about that. I normally don't touch User pages to edit out dead links while deleting pages. The info about The Toman Catastrophe is found at Tolman_Power_Station#Post_Outbreak so maybe you can change the link on your character page to something like [[Tolman_Power_Station#Post_Outbreak|The Tolman Catastrophe]]. People can still click the link to find out more about the incident. ~ 19:48, 19 July 2011 (UTC)
